Updating Storm

I'm trying to update my Storm with the most reent software and keep getting stuk. A pop-up keeps asking me for my PIN but it won't let me enter information or enter what kind of devie it is. And then I wind up hitting anel and I'm right bak where I started. Can someone walk me through, step-by-step, how I can update my Storm so it's up-to-date?
I've tried to follow the online steps, but keep getting stuck with the PIN/Device drop down box issue.
Thanks!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
From your description, I have no way to know what instructions you are following...there must be a million different "online steps", and I've no way to know which you are following. So, I'll just provide what I know...
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for each model. Please use those as reference as you proceed.
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

What, exactly, does that mean? Do you mean the device lock password? If so, that's what it needs. Otherwise, please be explicit about exactly what it is prompting for.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Blue Screen Crash on computer after updating Storm software

My software ran fine , but after updating my Blackberry software, my system give me the blue screen of death.  The specific error is a multible Ir request.  My system crashed three to four times per day. This went on for at least 8 months.   Due to a virus issue I reinstalled windows XP and all of my software.  Due to previous issues I did not reinstall Blackberry Software until two weeks after rebuilding my system, during this time I had no issues.  I reinstalled From the CD then updated on the web to the current version.  Within 2 hours of install the same Blue screen odf death returned.  I am running on a Dell Latitude D820.  All computer updates are current.  All drivers are new after install.   Clean install is only two weeks old.  Anti virus installed.  Thanks For any help.

On your re-install for the Windows software are you are you keeping all of your previous backups? It could the BB Desktop Software databases and registry that is corrupt. Try to re-install the Windows software and install BB DS from scratch without using previous databases. If you install on another PC using your same disk is it giving any problems?

  • Problems with Storm 9530 after software update

Greetings, I am new to this forum and hope I am in the right place.
After an email prompt from BlackBerry, Yesterday, I updated my software on my Verizon BlackBerry Storm, 9530.
    Now I have several problems;
    1.  Voice commands are not being recognized as easily as previously, making hands free calling almost impossible.
    2.  Pandora will stall near the end of each selection.  The song will resume after I push the pause and then the play button.
    3.  When I attempt to live stream from a local radio station, I get the following message: "! This playlist contains no valid songs"    Buffering... is displayed in the upper right hand corner, but no connection is ever made.
Any ideas what I need to do to fix the thing?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
    1) A known bug...we all hope that RIM is working on a fix.
    2) A known bug...Pandora is working on a fix. I have heard that it is available on their website but not yet via AppWorld.
    3) Very difficult to diagnose...it could be the website itself...it could be your device browser settings....it could be a number of things. Try these steps.
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Register with VZW:
    Dial *228, select option 1
    Dial *228, select option 2
    Register HRT:
Homescreen > Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > BBKey (it does not matter which line is current) > Register Now
    Resend Service Books:
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Websites can be coded to perform better with some browsers rather than others. The BB Browser can appear to websites as several different things...that setting is, from within the Browser App, (BBKey > Options > Browser Configuration > Browser Identification). Changing that to another browser might help your BB interact better with some websites. In combination with all of the other configuration settings, you need to find the combination of all of these settings that works best for the sites you are visiting. Sadly, there is no "best advice" to give as each persons needs are different. But, I typically find that changing the Browser Identification often helps -- most often by changing to FF or IE (if those are available to you...the options vary by carrier).
Hopefully something in there will get you going again.
    Good luck!

  • Storm software update!!!

Last night I plugged my storm into my computer to put more music on it and back it up and it did a device software update and I LOVE the new upgrades but ALL OF MY APPLICATIONS ARE GONE!!!!  I've even tried a restore and that didn't help either!!!  I wouldn't really care but one of the MIA apps is a password manager with some passwords in it......AH!!!
    Help me please!!!!!!!!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Without your express acceptance, the desktop software would not have proceeded to update anything on your BB...it required you to say "yes" at least once. Further, it would have offered you the opportunity to perform a backup when it did that update, from which it should have performed a restore afterwards. If you did not say "yes" at that time, then it did not perform a backup, and you therefore have nothing recent from which to perform a restore.
Nevertheless, search your entire hard drive for a file with an IPD extension (*.IPD). Make note of the date/time of each that is found...the most recent date/time stamped file is probably your best bet for restoring (not guaranteed...use your judgment). Then, use this KB to perform a restore of your data.
However, this will typically do nothing regarding applications. If the applications are core, then the desktop software Application Loader will allow you to put them back onto your BB. If the applications are add-on, then you have to go back to your source of them. If the source is AppWorld, Then follow this section of the AppWorld user guide to reinstall them:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/deliverables/7268/Re-install_an_item_on_a_different_device_643962_11.js...
If the source is not AppWorld, then you must go back to whoever that source was...hopefully you have record of both the source as well as any activation keys that you require.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Blackberry Storm 2 Update

Is there a new update for Blackberry Storm 2? Anybody know what the new update number is? And is this a good update with no problems?

    Hi Jane,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
Since the web based loader is not working I will suggest doing the following:
    1.  Go to https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=02A32AD2669E6FE298E607FE7CC0E1A0
    2. Download the device software for your BlackBerry Storm 9550 5.0.0.712
    3. Install the software and press finish once it's done installing.
    4. Navigate to the location where Loader.exe is installed. The
    default location is C:\Program Files\Common
    Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.
    5. Run Loader.exe. The Application Loader Wizard window
    will open.
    6. When the Communication Port
Selection window opens, select a PIN number for any one of the BlackBerry
smartphones connected to the personal computer. Click
    Next.
    7. The Application
Loader Wizard opens the Device Application Selection. Select any additional
languages or applications in the selection window and click
    Next.
    8. Click
Finish. The BlackBerry smartphone will be upgraded with the
    appropriate software.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • How can I update my OS5 to OS6.0 for my blackberry storm 8520

How can I update my OS5 to OS6.0 for my blackberry storm 8520 plz help anyone thanks

    Hello,
Well, first off...the 8520 is not a Storm, it's a Curve. The 9520 (which you put in your profile here) is a Storm.
So, if your question is about the 9520, then the answer is never. The Storm line is EOL, and as far as I understand, development stopped on the OS in the 5.0 range, and will never move beyond.
    Good luck!

Do you agree with the following statement :
when you open the application called Desktop Manager on your PC,
and you click on the "Backup and restore" button,
there are three vertical parts :
    - BACKUP
    - RESTORE
    - ADVANCED
    click on ADVANCED
you get to a two panels window.
the left panel is what is on your computer. Click File >> Open... and select the IPD file that contains your backup.
    then re-read my first message.

  • Blackberry OS6 update for Storm?

I just read an article saying that there will not be an upgrade of the OS6 for the Storm series.  I hope this is not true, because it will be very upsetting since the Storm phones are the multimedia phones for blackberry before the torch.
Please respond if you have fact that this is true or not.
If this is true blackberry will have many unhappy customers
    http://www.itproportal.com/portal/news/article/2010/8/4/blackberry-os-6-not-available-storm-smartpho...

I moved from the Palm platform with the release of the Blackberry Storm 1. Hearing all the good things about RIM and the Blackberry platform, the release of a RIM Smart phone intrigued me.
My frustration and disappointment with the software operation of the Storm was tempered by learning of the iPhone issues; My adult son that is an avid Apple enthusiast and, through our conversations I've learned that not everything is great in Apple land - with business email and similar software issues (like the lack of Flash) both phones carry baggage.
So, I followed Crackberry hacks and learned how to get the best from the Storm 1.  When Storm 2 was announced with Wi-Fi, a better touch screen, and faster performance, I bought in.  And while those enhancements greatly helped the overall functionality, the browser was and is pathetic.  But, I hung on thinking that a software upgrade must be in the future.
Needless to say, when OS 6 was announced - and clarified that it required 512 MB of Ram (instead of the Storm 2 256 MB) I was blown away.  My conclusion is that RIM has made a BAD business decision not to offer Storm 2 owners a way UP.
Is there not a way to upgrade the existing device with 512 memory capacity?  If there is, then RIM could create an upgrade recall - or trade out program.  I say this because I have not read anything about keeping the Storm footprint in future models - and I really like it.  Having a slide out keyboard in portrait does not work for my stubby fingers.  And, need I remind RIM of the cost for optional hardware; charging stands, chargers, cables, headset adapters, holsters, etc.  I easily spend an additional $200 on such items – that usually don't fit other RIM devices.
I guess what disturbs me most is the inconsiderate way RIM costs it's customers money; so far I've bought 2 Storms in 2 years.  If they do not come up with a financially sound way to upgrade I, like most Storm owners I've communicated with, will be looking for a new phone – and NOT a Blackberry.
I would hope that someone at RIM is moderating these forums and reporting to management and marketing how much they are **bleep** off their formally loyal customer base.
    EDIT: Removed swearing

  • Storm 2 Software Update Question

Is there a way to tell what a software update will fix before I update my device?  I am running 5.0.0.607 and got an update notification to update to .713.  I want to know what it will change before I do it in-case it doesn't affect me and screw something else up.
    Thanks

It is intended for the iPhone to be activated in order to install firmware updates and/or to restore an iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted, which re-installs the current firmware version. iPod Touch owners are required to pay a small fee for firmware updates.
A few people here have reported they were able to install a firmware update and/or restore their iPhone with iTunes with a non-activated iPhone with the SIM card that was used when the iPhone was activated remaining in the iPhone.

  • Can I update my 9800 software to V7.0?

My 9800 torch is going crazy and I'm guessing its because I need a new software version. When I upgrade some application on my phone and try to use it, it tells me faild and verify module. The only apps working on my phone are my bbm and twitter. Others I had to delete because of the module issue. Now I'm told to upgrade blackberry Id but that's even another annoying issue on its own.
If I can upgrade I'm sure it would all go away but my question is, hope it doesn't mess up my phone. Need a reply fast as my phone is fast becoming useless. Thanks

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
As I recall, the 9800 OS development stopped in the OS6 level, but you will need to dig to be sure. To start, however, you need to be sure that you have a good and full backup...see the link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.
Once you have a good backup, the simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
    1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
    2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
    3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
    http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
    4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
    However...
    chika84 wrote:
Now I'm told to upgrade blackberry Id but that's even another annoying issue on its own.
That one may require a different remedy...which you can do independently of the above full OS reload...
    1) Remove both AppWorld and the Identity App from your BB
KB10040 How to view or remove installed applications on a BlackBerry smartphone
If it requests that you reboot the BB, do so
    2) Do a Batt-Pull reboot (power on, remove battery, wait, insert battery, wait), even if redundant to the one you did in step 1.
    3) Install (on your BB) a fresh copy of AppWorld (which, as part of it's install, should also install a fresh copy of the Identity app)
    http://blackberry.com/appworld/download
Again, if it requests to reboot, do so.
    4) Do another Batt-Pull reboot
    5) See if it now works.
    Cheers!

  • ThinkVantage System Update 5.02 problem -- System Update hangs or freezes when installing KB updates

Often after installing a KB update, System Update will restart the computer and then resume processing to install the next downloaded KB update.  However, after restarting, it always freezes or hangs part way through the next KB install.  After waiting 5 or 10 minutes, I click on "cancel."   System Update acknowledges cancellation but nothing happens, and when I eventually give up and select "End task" in Windows Task Manager, I am informed that "This program is not responding."
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up.  I have resorted to downloading and installing these KB updates one-by-one after a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on my T400 model 2764CTO.    Service Pack 1 is installed and Microsoft.NET Framework 3.51, which satisfies Lenovo's requirements.  I am running BIOS 3.11 and plan to update it, but would like to solve this problem first, as I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update!
Anyone else having this problem, or any solutions?

DID you get the machine from someonelse, outside of  Lenovo? DID you upgrade the original o/s?
    what o/s?
    ==
KB are offered by microsoft, not Lenovo/su.  Under a rare condition, SU will offer as KB.  A known instance, where microsoft offers HOTFIX, but not for monthly update distribution.  Lenovo has their version of this KB. Probably this HOTFIX fixes a problem in Lenovo land driver that needs the hotfix.
I am amazed at how many KB fixes show up for your machine!!!
    ==
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up. << assumption, please docment.<<<
Always update your BIOS 1st, the Net frame (v4?). Then try the update land.
    ===
As I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update
Dont BIOS update during a rain storm. or power fauilure.  Always use a ISO (cd) version of this.  Download/burn this version  in case.  Then use the other version, Update from windows. (you now have a backup).
Please research your hardware install guide, as too how to RESET BIOS eeprom.  Get tweezers, change the jump prom clip. BIOS flash from 0. Jump prom clip back.   Is this scary, yesl jumper is on mother board.
    so
    1 3 5
    2 4 6
Plastic jumper is 34 56. Change to 1234, and you reload a bios from blank. You can enter UUID, serial number and fun stuff.
Do not loose the plastic jumper. Turn the a/c off. Have reading glasses.  But this is the solution to what if BIOS update freezes.  Also have a ISO backup of the previous  release  of BIOS on CD.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please refer to this official download portal as you proceed. It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try the "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
