Updating sync-ing my iPod playlists

Hi, I recently brought a iPod Video 60GB and I have read the manual and the iPod 101 on the website but I'm unclear on how transferring tunes to my iPod really works. When I got the iPod I decided to allow the iPod to update everything automatically - which is great and it copied everything I wanted. Since then I have created playlists, some are just those I created to burn discs which I didn't want on the iPod. So I changed the settings so that it would only update with certain playlists. Now after I downloaded some podcasts I right clicked and updated my iPod and it froze and crashed iTunes. When I opened it up again I lost over 3500 songs and was left with just 800 songs. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod but that didn't work. So I restarted it and had to copy all the 3500 songs again!!!!
Now what I can't understand is did I lose these songs because I decided to only update the iPod with certain playlists (and by doing so it only adds the songs from the playlists only???) or was it because something happened to crash iTunes and in turn screwed up the tunes on the iPod?
Also in order to avoid this is there a way I can get everything in the Library on the iPod but only keep the playlists I want? This seems like such a stupid question!!! I thought this was clear but I'm confused!
Any guidence or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

If I just select the option to only sync with certain
playlists it will only put the songs in the playlists
and exclude everything else in my library?
Correct. If you import 1 or 100 songs, they go into your iTunes library. With the exception of Smart Playlists, you will have to add the song(s) to a playlist that is set to sync with your iPod, before those songs will transfer to your iPod.
Could this be the reason I lost the 3500 tracks? Not
because iTunes screwed up but I did?
It isn't necessarily any screw up, just that you weren't aware of what you had told iTunes to do with the music on your iPod. You originally had it set up to sync everything, so your entire library was on the iPod. When you changed to syncing only certain playlists, the songs that were on the iPod that were not in those specific playlists were removed from your iPod.
So in order to make sure I have all the items in my
Library I could create a smart playlist that includes
everything? This way I don't have to have the other
playlists like ones I have created for burning
discs...?
If you've already burned the discs, it would be easiest to just delete those specific playlists from iTunes and go back to automatically updating. Or possibly a smart playlist which is set to "Date Added is after 01/01/02" (some date after the oldest date you had added music).

sync'ed since they are not found -- I there a log file written someplace that can tell me the path
if the title itunes ais trying to copy to the ipod -- thanks

Contrary to the new model wich allows only syncing, the old Apple TV (1st generation) allows syncing and streaming from an iTunes library.
For syncing you should pair your Apple TV (1st generation) to your computer's iTunes Library instead of just connecting it to it's shared iTunes Library for streaming
Here you will find the explanation on how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1143
If your Apple TV (1st generation) was already paired and/or connected to your computer I suggest that you first  unpair it and/or disconnect it.

  • Stop Profile From Sync'ing to iPod Touch

    Hi All,
I have a question regarding permanently removing profiles from the iPod touch. I currently have an iPhone (which has a work related profile), but I use the same computer to sync my iPod touch. For some reason the work profile syncs onto the iPod touch even though the work application is not sync'd to the iPod. In addition, I manually have removed the profile from the Mobile Applications sub directory.
I also deleted the profile from from the iPod, but every time the iPod is sync'd the profile shows back how. How do I delete this permanently?
    Thanks.

It was actually loaded by an application from work. I think the profile is called a "Provisioning Profile" (not Configuration Profile). It is definitely loaded as part of the application, but I have removed the application and deleted the backup and sync histories...
No use, it still shows up after a sync. There is got to be something hidden...
    Thanks.

  • What exactly will "erase and sync"-ing my ipod erase?

so i want to download a video onto my mom's ipod but apparently the ipod has been synced to another itunes library when last time, i plugged it into the same computer to update it...
anyway the notification "do you want to erase this ipod and sync with the contents of this itunes library?" came up so i just want to know what will be erased.... like i don't want to lose her apps and the progress she's made in them hahaha.
just some more details:when i plug in the ipod,
    under the "Tones" section--i didn't checkmark it;
    "Sync Music" didn't checkmark it
"Sync Movies" well I want to checkmark it and check the video i want to download
"Sync tv shows" "Sync photos" all aren't checkmarked
so the only thing i have checked (or want to check) is the movies. the ipod currently doesn't have any music on it but lots of photos and apps and i don't want to lose any of them. so if i were to click "erase and sync" will that delete the photos and apps and the progress?
MUCH THANKS TO ANYONE THAT WOULD HELP!

You have to use the manual method of syncing to copy music and videos for other than the one syncing computer you can have. The manual method is discussed here:

  • Reverse sync-ing of iPod to iTunes?

I made a HUGE mistake!! About 2-3 weeks ago I d/l'd the 7.0.1.8 version of iTunes (CD Driver 2.0.6.0 and CD Driver DLL 2.0.6.0).
It worked fine to watch an episode of Heroes.
Then this week I opened up iTunes and there was a series of pop-up prompts that I (mea culpa!) ignored and I just kept clicking on "Next" until it got to the last one which I think asked something about my library and if I wanted iTunes to do it or if I wanted to manually do it. I answered yes. I am completely at fault, I just kept clicking through without really reading the prompts.
My whole library was scanned for about 20 minutes or more, something about gapless backups. Then when it was all done, I realized I had duplicates and triplicates of songs in my iTunes.
I went to "Show All Duplicates" and clicked on Select All and Delete. That deleted the whole library. Fortunately I had it backed up recently to an external USB hard drive. I repopulated iTunes via the backups. It still created duplicates which I am painstakingly and manually deleting.
HOWEVER, while the restore did restore my playlists, they are not all populated. The SmartPlaylists were re-created and repopulated. My personal playlists were re-created but were not populated.
I have not synced my iPod since before all this occured. Is there a way to reverse sync iTunes from the iPod to restore my settings and populated lists that are still on my iPod?
Thanks for any advice, insight, or suggestions offered!

  • Trouble with sync'ing new iPod, please help!

So I jsut spent the last hour plus on the phone with Apple, and the problem I'm having is that I need to Microsoft XP Service Pack 3 installed for iTunes to work with the new nano. The snag is that I'm using my work computer and it won't let me install that new service pack (I'm currently using service pack 2). Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anyway I can get the new nano to work with service pack 2? I just bought this yesterday so I don't want to bring it back unless I have to.

You need administrator privileges to install service pack 3. If you are not the administrator, i suggest that you talk to someone who is. You said that this is your work computer. Is it on a network? Do you have an IT guy who can help you? Sorry that i cant be of much help, but you need to elaborate the problem.

  • Stream or syncing from an iPod?

After my 18 month old Airport Express inevitably packed up and stopped working I decided to upgrade to AppleTV. To be honest unless I'm missing something AppleTV doesn't seem to be able to do half the stuff I'd hoped for.
Is there anyway I can get the playlists on my iPod to stream to Apple TV?
Or is there anyway I can use AppleTV to sync to my iPod playlists?
From what I can see the only benefit to syncing is so that I can listen to music on the odd occasion my laptop is actually switched off.
I've spent hours putting large playlists onto my AppleTV, but can I add to them without having all the original tracks constantly on my laptop hard drive as well? I don't want stuff that's already on AppleTV to be removed each time I upload (sync).
Bottom line is that I never have enough space on my MacBook Pro to hold my mp3 collection. All my music is on my iPod and it used to be so simple to just plug it into my laptop and stream straight to Airport Express. When I purchased a new album I'd copy it onto my iPod and then remove it from my iTunes library on my MacBook Pro to save space.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I have been having a similar issue. My problem is that I bought Heroes Season 1 on iTunes. I downloaded some episodes on my laptop at home, and I downloaded others from my desktop at work, which I then put on my iPod to watch on the subway. Only later did I learn that you can only download video content to one computer even though you bought and paid for it (this rip-off is a topic for another thread).
Anyway, I have been able to get around the problem by connecting my iPod to my laptop whenever I want to watch that content, which allows me to watch the shows on my laptop.
What I cannot seem to do, however, is stream my iPod through Apple TV so that I can watch the video content that exists on my iPod but that is not on my laptop. I can connect the iPod to my laptop while Apple TV is also on and synced, but none of the iPod content appears to be accessible through Apple TV.
It sounds like we have a similar problem. Hopefully someone can help us out -- I can't imagine that Apple TV would not have the capability to stream video stored on an iPod, particularly given iTunes' draconian video download restrictions.

  • My ipod touch shows that it is sync'ing but as i look into the music folder of my ipod4 it shows no update. help anyone?

i was able to restart my ipod several times because of this problem but it doesn't really show any update in its music playlist.

Are you checking the items you want synced to the iPod?
Have yu tried resetting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • "Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists..."

I recently bought a 1GB iPod Nano from a dude on craigslist and I updated it once, but when I try to update it now a message comes up that reads:
"Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Also, when I updated it yesterday, it said that the iPod didn't have room for all of the songs on my iTunes...but I only have like 75 regular-length songs on there and the 1GB is supposed to hold 240. Anyone know what's up with that?
After it informed me of this last thing, it made me a playlist of a "selection" of songs from the iTunes and updated it with those.
I deleted that playlist today...may that be related to my first question?
All of this doesn't make sense. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?
    Thanks

I had this problem with my 4GB iPod nano and I tried everything that you said to try. I did accidentally delete the iPod Selection playlist and I tried to make a new smart playlist. When I did this I got an error message that said "The smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty of conflict with one another. This will result in never matching any item. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?" I tried to upload an old library onto my iTunes and it was successful, however, my iPod would still not sync. Do you know what i can do to fix this?
    thank you.

  • "Songs on the iPod "____" cannot be updated because all of the playlists...

"Songs on the iPod "Harold Kim's iPod" cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Im not sure what this means or how to fix it. any sort of advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.
Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".

    Hi Dennis!
I have a couple of steps for you to try in order to get those songs transferred to your iPod touch. First, make sure all of your software is updated with the latest versions. If the songs were downloaded from iTunes, you will also want to delete the songs from your library and then download them again from the list of past purchases on your iTunes account. An article about doing that can be found here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you try a sync after those two steps and are still seeing the issue, then I would like you to try syncing the iPod by setting it to manually manage. An article outlining more information on manually managing your iPod sync can be found here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
If you are still having issues after that, I have another article that can outline some other reasons why your songs may not transfer to your iPod, and it can be found here:
Some songs in iTunes won't copy to iPod
