Updating TLF swc to 2.0 in Flash CS4
I am currently using one of the latest versions of TLF available as a swc as described for use in Flash CS4. However, I realize that this is not the TLF 2.0 version. Can I install the TLF version 2.0 via a swc for use in CS4?
Or do I need to do all my AS3 projects in Flex 4, which means I need to buy THAT instead?
I would just buy CS5, but now I have read somewhere that 2.0 isn't available to update in Flash CS5, which seems sort of bizarre since things like floats were implied to be available in CS5.
Keeping track of what software I need to buy to make available a feature implied to be already available in the framework is a bit frustrating.
Yes, you can use tlf 2.0 with CS4. I'm working with tlf 2.0 and CS4. Just add a library path to textLayout.swc and it works.
No need to buy other software...

Will not run.

End result: Flash CS4 still crashes, if not on opening, then everytime I try to open my old documents and reset the preferences.
I am currently reinstalling my entire hard drive just to try to get CS4 to work again.
I have worked with Flash since 1998, using it professionally for everything from short interactive demos to feature length animated films.
CS4 is without a doubt the most poorly designed, inefficient version I have ever dealt with.
A great and useful animation program was turned into a piece of bloated garbage filled with bugs and inefficiencies.
I will switch to the first animation program that comes along to replace it, now that adobe seems to think the only real use for flash is to create low level acton scripts (despite being used for tv show level animation production for years.)
These forums amply demonstrate that adobe has almost no useful support for its products and no real vision or idea of what it is doing.
The fact that you can no longer even export flash as a quicktime movie that actually accurately plays is another nail in the coffin.
I wish somebody at Adobe cared. -
Manual installation of Flash CS4 security update patch fails

Am attempting to install Windows flash_player_update2_flash10
using the Admin account. Followed these instructions:
1. Quilt Flash CS4 Professional (NOTE: actually closed all
programs)
2. Right click flash_player_update2_flash10.zip
3. Select Extract All....
4. Extract the contents of the file to:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\
5. When asked to replace the existing Players folder, choose
Yes
Shortly after giving administrative okay to the install and
clicking "yes" to the "copy and replace" popup, I get a Windows
popup with this message:
"Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help
portect your computer, Windows has blocked access to the file.
Name: FlashPlayer.exe" OK"
No options on the popup except "OK" whichs stops the
installation. I realize this is a Windows issue, but it's also a
CS4 installation issue. (I find it extremely ironic that Windows
detects the installation of a security update as a security issue.)
Any suggestions?You're going to get a lot more attention in the Flash forum than you

My AppleTV (2nd gen) crashed last night with the latest update and now all I have a flashing light. What to do? It showed a USB symbol point toward an iTunes symbol and won't reset after resetting with the remote. Same thing.
usb symbol pointing toward an itunes symbol is apples way of trying to get you to connect the appletv to your computer running itunes so it can restore the apple tv's software

offered in
this
technote.
The technote identifies a permissions problem with the
components directory of non-Safari browsers. In my case the
permissions problem appears to have been in the main
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins directory. What tipped me off to the
solution was the fact that after manually removing Flash
Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt from the /Library/Internet
Plug-Ins directory, subsequent attempts to install Flash Player
resulted in the "Creating file: 1008:5, -5000 Access Denied Error"
I remembered seeing in the technote. Before removing these files,
the installer would just fail silently, perhaps because it saw
files it was going to install already living in the right place,
and furthermore had no permissions to alter the directory.
In any case, by making the permissions change recommended in
the technote to the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins directory, I was
able to install the plug-in, which gave me back access to Flash
content in all my browsers.
Hope this is helpful to someone else...

Flash CS4 10.0.2 update failed to install
The flash CS4 10.0.2 update fails to install no matter how many times I try or restart my machine. A flash media encoder update and a flash lite update also fail. Can someone please help me figure out how to fix this?

Also, adobe effectively does not have a technical support phone line. They have one in name only. You'll just be put on hold endlessly, disconnected randomly, and given the runaround constantly if you ever do manage to get through to a live person. Like everyone else, adobe has apparently outsourced their support to people who have no idea how to troubleshoot anything, and can barely parrot from a prewritten script. There is no light at the end of the phone tree - you can't get water from a stone, so don't waste your time like I did. -
Flash CS4 update failing.... why?
I have fully operational and registered versions of many of the CS4 programs, but lately any attempts to update them are failing, using either Adobe Updater, or by downloading the update itself. For example, today I wanted to update Flash CS4 10.0.0 to 10.02, and just after the download is completed and set-up begins, the operation immediately fails, and generates a lengthy errors report. My computer is well tuned, I have 4 GB of RAM, a quad processor etc. and all the originally installed CS4 applications are working as they should...I just can't update them. I have no problems with any of the other software on the computer. Even the update for Adobe Media Encoder fails in exactly the same way. Acrobat Reader is the only update that has been successful. My o/s is XP/SP3. Is this an Adobe problem? Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas as to why a simple update is failing or what I can do to 'fix' the problem and complete the Flash CS4 update? ......................frank
The problem has been solved. The culprit was Adobe Acrobat speed loader (Acrobat_sl) running at Start-up. When this was disabled via msconfig> Startup tab etc., all Adobe updates were run successfully. When it was NOT disabled, all updates would immediately fail after setup.exe was initiated.

I've created very nice UI component using Flex 3 and I have exported it into a SWC file.
How can I import it into Flash CS4 to use it there?Hmm... if you happen to be familiar with C#, then you may probably know about the problem of P/Invoke (this is a command that lets you access Windows API through C# code, which will apparently prevent it from functioning on other OSs).
What happens with Flex framework is somewhat similar to this. I.e. it relies to much on the features of Flex compiler and the components of the framework create a lot of cross-dependencies, which makes them barely usable outside the framework.
So, if you have time and doing this just as a matter of learning, I'd suggest you start an AS project in Flex builder and advance with it compiling it both with Flex and Flash to see if there are any differences (basically, once you see it doesn't compile / doesn't behave as you'd expect in Flash, you'll know you used something that is specific to Flex). These would be mostly meta tags, like [Bindable] for example.
And, if you need any tutorials on how to code in pure AS, then, well, there are really to many So that you can even choose what's appropriate / goes better with your learning habits.

In IE you can see there is the 64-bit version - (in Firefox there was just the 32-bit version) - got to: (others)

choose your system and version
download it via internet explorer and install the adobe flash player
restart firefox and it should work.

I just now discovered that there are two flashplayerupdateservice.exe on my hard drive!
one in my windows\system32 directory and
the other one in windows\system32\MacroMed\Flash
exactly the same version, same everything, 11.6.602.180 both of them
I suspect having two copies of the same program is what makes it crash.
Can Adobe please fix this problem? It's just annoying, does not hurt and you can leave it alone
and go on with your business, but it would be nice to get rid of that error message.

Using TextFlowUtil in Flash CS4
Hello,
How do I go about using TextFlowUtil in CS4? What project settings do I need to update. I have tried a variety of source and library paths to no avail.
What I am trying to accomplish is importing saved markup into a Flash CS4 app that was exported from a Flex app via TextFlowUtil.
I have the TextLayout component installed in Flash CS4 and it works fine. I just can't seem to get TextFlowUtil working.

How to use embedded font (CFF) for Flash CS4?

I am trying to embed "Arial Unicode MS" for use by TLF in my Flash CS4 project. As I googled around, I am using the "Flex SWC" approach, only not having any luck. Here is what I got:

When I am trying to instantiate this class, I have AS code in my Flash main timeline:

Flash compiler says: "1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type FontEmbeds_Font1 to an unrelated type flash.text:Font."
Ok. Now after I changed it to:
var font:FontEmbeds_Font1 = new FontEmbeds_Font1();
Flash gives 3 errors:
"VerifyError: Error #1014: Class mx.core::FontAsset could not be found.
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable TextLayout is not defined.
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable MainTimeline is not defined."
I am assuming I have to create a Font1 object in order to use the embedded font. Is this assumption correct? As I've tried to use the "fontFamily" directly but Flash didn't seem to find the font at all:

In one fla where I used pure TFL, nothing gets rendered at all in the container Sprite. Flash doesn't throw any errors either. In another fla where I used a ComboBox, etc. along with TFL, it throws an error says it can't compile since "there is no ActionScript found" and I got a screen where all the Flash components were flickering. After several attempts, Flash crashed.
Also as a side note, the swc gets generated by Flash Builder Beta 2, at first it was 18mb and the second time I complied it become 9mb and stayed 9mb afterwards. Not sure if that's a concern.

Can anyone point me where or fill me in on if this is possible which I think it is... I need to figure out how to set up flash cs4 with the AIR 2.5 SDK Because I think it is possible to still build the air app in cs4 and then package it for android using the sdk adt.bat??? This was part of the AIR 2.0 beta release note, but I used this for 2.5 and it works nice.
You can try it too an make sure you use 2.5 wherever the not says 2.0beta2.

How to Update Flash CS4 to Use the AIR 2 Beta SDK
If you use Flash CS4 Professional to build Adobe AIR applications, please follow the instructions below to manually update the version of the AIR SDK to use version 2.0.
Update Flash CS4 Professional to version 10.0.2 at http://www.adobe.com/support/flash/downloads.html or select "Help > Updates... " from within Flash CS4.
Quit Flash CS4 Professional if it is open.
Navigate to the Flash CS4 installation folder. The default location on Windows is "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\" and on Mac OS "/Applications/Adobe Flash CS4/"
Within the "Adobe Flash CS4" folder you should see a folder called "AIK1.5". If this folder is not present repeat step #1.
Rename the folder "AIK1.5" to "AIK1.5 OLD" or delete it if you do not need to save a copy of it.
Make a new folder called "AIK1.5"
Download the Adobe AIR 2 SDK from the labs website and uncompress the contents of the folder to the new "AIK1.5" folder you just created.
Copy the "airglobal.swc" file located within the "Adobe Flash CS4/AIK1.5/frameworks/libs/air/" folder into the "Adobe Flash CS4/Common/Configuration/ActionScript 3.0/AIR1.5/" folder.
Flash CS4 is now configured to use the AIR 2 beta 2 SDK.
In order to take advantage of the new AIR 2 beta 2 features, you will need to update your application descriptor file to use the "2.0beta2" namespace. -

I have a website template in which I am trying to change the header text words and menu text words to customize the template. How do I do this in Flash CS4? Thanks!
There are any number of ways these text elements might have been designed into the file. So you pretty much have to search for things. If you do not see the text that you want to change when you open the fla file, then you may need to either make some layers visible that are not (eyeball icon next to layer name) or you may need to look into the actionscript code to see if the text is being dynamically written when the file opens. If you happened to receive any .as, .txt, or .xml files with the template, the text elements may also be defined in those files.
Just so you know, and this is just an observation, it appears from experience in these forums that template designers tend to make templates so that you are more likely to hire them to update things than to be able to solve it yourself.
