Updating to 4.2 on a different computer. Please help :(
I have been trying to update my 3G to 4.2, but I kept getting a message that '9.2 is the latest version of Itunes'. Apple wanted 30$ to offer any kind of assistance -soooo- after a bit of research, I learn that my powerbook G4's operating system (10.4.11) is 'too old' to accomodate this latest update; therefore, I need leopard or jaguar or some kind of jungle cat o.s. for my still decent working laptop to have functionality with my 3g. Sweet.
Due to a growing disenchantment with Apple, I decided to forgo updating my aging PB & downloaded itunes on my work desktop (pc) & logged into my itunes account. Is it possible to just do the update from this compu - logged into my account- without doing any kind of syncing? Basically just don't want to have my pics or music etc wiped out as I haven't (&would prefer not) transferred anything to the PC. Thank you in advance, Happy Thanksgiving

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode. -
Hi. My itunes library is in current 10.5.2 but my old ipod touch 4th or 3rd gen is not updating at all its still in current 4.2 and there is some apps i cant download that requires a 4.3 update but in my itunes it wont. Please help!
Are you sure you have a 4g/3g iPod? If you don't have a camera, it's definitely not 4G. If it has no camera and is 8 or 16 Gb it is a 2G and can't go beyond 4.2.1.

go to device manager, find Human Interface Device, find HID-compliant touchscreen (maybe under USB input device), try to enable it, click yes and restart PC

Apple does not sell an unlocked iPhone. Some cell carriers offer the option to purchase an unlocked phone at a significantly higher price. Your friend could go to Hong Kong and buy an unlocked phone from an authorized carrier but if he has any problems with the phone, he will need to take it back to the country where he purchased it.

I believe from the situation you describe your iPhone 3g has the iPAD baseband 6.15.00 which is interfering with iTunes. Remember Apple does not allow downgrade of software typically. The current 3g firmware 4.2.1 has a baseband 5.15.04 which is lower than, what I believe your baseband is of 6.15.00. So to install the current 3g firmware 4.2.1 would actually be a baseband downgrade, which iTunes will not allow. So to fix your iPhone you will have to search the Web like diesel vdub said. There are no parts to buy and your iPhone will work again I promise.

Not true. The music and pic sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
You really should transfer everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your computer. Since you do not have access to the old computer, then use your backup copy of the old computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer ( not good), then you would have to transfer itunes purchased as described earlier. Any other itunes content would be lost.
You can e-mail photo library pics to yourself, but they will not be of the original quality.
Before syncing, enter at least one unique contact and calendar entry on the computer. When you first sync, then you should get the option to merge the data. -
