Updating to 4.3.3..... help?

A couple weeks ago, I realized that I needed to update my 3rd gen iPod touch from it's original ios. I ended up having to restore my settings, then use my previous back up to get my stuff back on my iPod. I updated to ios 4.2.1, and everything was fine and dandy up until about yesterday.  YouTube started not working at all, the saved photos library wouldn't update, things like bookmarks in Safari kept mysteriously disappearing and reappearing. My iPod wouldn't sync with iTunes at all.  I tried deleting some apps to clear up memory, and when that didn't work, I figured if I updated to the newest version of iTunes, that might help, so I did that today, and I'm now running 10.3.1.55.  I discovered that 4.3.3 is the newest software update for my ipod, so I checked for an update on iTunes, and got a message saying that ios 4.2.1 was the most up to date version.  Then I tried a direct download of it as a .zip, and converted it to a .ipsw.  When I try to select that file to update, it says that the firmware is incompatible.  No idea what to do now. I don't really care if I update or not, I just want my iPod to start working properly again.  Thanks.
I'm running Windows XP sp3 with version 10.3.1.55 of iTunes and have a 3rd gen 8gb iPod touch running ios 4.2.1.
EDIT: okay, so apparently I actually have a 2nd gen.  How I didn't know this before is beyond me.  Anyway, I don't think I can update to ios 4.3.3 with a 2nd gen, but the question still stands: How do I get my ipod back to normal again?

Unfortunately there is a great deal of confusion regarding the 3rd generation iPod Touch. They were available in 32gB and 64gB models only. There never was an 8gB version. You have a 2nd generation and 4.2.1 is the highest iOS available for it.
