Updating to iOS 4.2.1 Backup Problems?

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen. It is currently iOS 3.1.2  I am trying to update it to iOS 4.2.1
I synced it/backed it up right before i updated it & its taking a long to to back up for the update, then this message appears:
An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-4.........).
Would you like to continue to update this iPod without backup?
Continuing without backup will result in the loss of all contents on
this iPod.
So I clicked "Cancel" because I don't want to loose everything & I tried it again. Same message appeared. Updating to iOS5 for my brother/moms itouch 3g yesterday worked fine.
Any Answers?

All iTunes content on your iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. iTunes content in your iTunes library cannot be erased when syncing an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, or when installing an iPhone firmware update. Regardless, it is a good idea to include your iTunes library with your computer's backup along with all other important data stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only.
Did you have Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes? If so, after downloading an app with your iPhone the app will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so.
No iTunes content on your iPhone - no music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, or 3rd party apps is included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
You can re-download a 3rd party app and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.

When I try to update my Ipad 2 to IOS 5.1.1 a message says the backup could not be saved. Try again. How can I solve this problem? Thank you....I work with MAC and Windows 7...

There is no problem. That is how this process works. You should backup the iPad, and transfer purchases before you update the iOS.
Read this before updating your iPad.
How to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch
And - If she bought the music with her Apple ID - the music does not belong to you. She may have bought the songs for you, but that is not how iTunes "sees" it. The purchases are tied to her ID - not to yours.

  • Just updated to IOS 8.0.2, new problems

I updated my iPad 3 to IOS 8.0.2 as soon as it became available.  IOS 8.0 was working fine, I didn't install 8.0.1 because of all the problems, but I couldn't help myself when 8.0.2 became available.  I figured Apple couldn't ruin 2 operating systems in a row.
    I was wrong, they did.
I updated my iPad 3, thru iTunes.  I thought all was well.  After a restart, iTunes told me that IOS 8.0.2 was available for me to download and install, even though I just did it.  I checked the iPad, and it said that I had IOS 8.0.2.  Even though I had it, I went thru the install again.  After it installed a 2nd time, I restarted the iPad, and the same thing happened. iTunes says that I need to update to IOS 8.0.2, even though the iPad says it has it already.
Everytime I hook the iPad to iTunes, I get the window saying I need to update to 8.0.2.
I don't get the message on the iPad because it knows that I have the latest IOS.
I've done all the resets.  I'm disappointed that they messed up again.
A few problems on my iPhone 5S as well.

my iPhone 5 have no sounds after upgrading to 8.0.2, that means no ringing, no alerts, no sound-just NOTHING! Sounds going just from earpods. i´ve tried to downgrade to 8.0 = same problem, trying restore... NOTHING. iPhone is completely mute...

  • After updating to IOS 8.1, I have problems sending photos in messages

I'm not at all sure how long after updating this started happening, and I'm fairly sure I just have a setting messed up someplace.
When I go into messages, contacts are listed in three different colors. Gray, green, & blue. I can send a message to any of them, but I can only send a photo to one that's listed in blue. Any of my contacts that are listed in gray or green the camera icon is grayed out and I can't send a photo to that person.
One of them is my wife and while it's been a 2-3 weeks since I've sent her a photo so I'm not sure when this changed. We both have an iPhone 6 w/ IOS 8.1. She can still send me photos.
The other side of this problem is one I've been having all along.
If I go to try and send a message in the 'Photos' app it never gives me an opportunity to select anyone from my contacts. It only comes up with a new message window and the send hotspot is also grayed out.

On the off chance anyone is watching the thread ...
I seem to have resolved the issue of sending a photo to my wife through messages by turning off iMessage, then rebooting (not resetting) the phone.
I still have the issue in Photos. If I select the share icon, then select message, it brings up a message authoring window with the photo in it, but never offers an opportunity to select a contact to send it to.

  • IOS 7 Restore from backup problem

I update my iPhone 5 to iOS 7. For some reason, my phone automatically restarted itself back to factory settings. So I calmy tries to restore it from my previous backup via iTunes. It seemed to work for a few seconds but then my phone restarted itself again and went back to factory settings. I then tried doing a restore from the phone itself via iCloud, only to get the same result. How do I get my phone out of this loop and to restore from my desired backup? Thanks.

Never jailbroken. However, Yes, I did have the iOS 7 beta on there for a while via the App Dev Program (using XCode 5). Let me add, that when iOS 7 released to the general public, my phone automatically updated itself to the official release version.

  • Updated to iOS 5.0 / restore Backup from iOS 4.3.3 not possible!!!

    Hi everybody!
On Saturday I changed my iPhone 4 on the new operating system iOS 5.0, here the steps as I proceeded:
    Usind iTunes 10.5.0.142
    1) I'm beginning to create a full backup (as the backup was still iOS 4.3.3).
    2) Then I wanted to select the previously downloaded "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" update file (Shift-click the Update button and choose file).
    3) In this process I was constantly getting back the error message "3002".
    4) In various forums I have read to update the iPhone via Restore and choosing the "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" file (Shift-clicking the Restore button and choosing file) and then restore the previously created backup (from iOS 4.3.3) so that messages etc. will be retained.
    5) The Update via Restore (Shift-clicking the Restore button and choosing file "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw") works fine!
    6) However, it can't restore the created Backup (from the iOS 4.3.3) because "it's broken or not compatible"
    7) Downgrade to 4.3.3 iOS is no longer possible.
    Can someone please help me?
    I would be very grateful!
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards
    dominikschnuffi

I have been working on this for the last two days - and still no luck. Did a reset. Did a restore. Now I am doing "Set up as new phone." Not very hopeful, but will let you know.  Even called the Apple Store, and they were no help.  Does anyone have an answer?

  • HT201210 My ipod touch won't update to iOS 6, it says unknown problem occured

My ipod touch is the 4th gen and currently has iOS 5 installed on it. It has 10 GB of free space
    Please answer ASAP

    You can try a reset.
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Otherwise yo will have to update via iTunes on a computer. Other uses have had to do that.
    -   fyou update on other than your syncing computer/iTunes library following these instructions. When you restore the iPod it will also be updated.

  • Probleme mit Akkulaufzeit nach Update auf iOS 6.1

    Hallo Zusammen,
    Vielen lieben Dank
    Patrick

I have also reset my phone to factory settings. Would taking it to one of the stores and they would do it for me??
any help will be great thank you

All I can tell you is that I am having the exact same problem with an iPod Touch and that I was running iTunes 9.2.1.5 at the time it happened. Upgraded to 10.0.0.68 hoping that it might help, but no joy.
I don't want to do a restore just now since the Touch seems to be working fine. Restore will have to wait until I have plenty of free time in case something goes wrong.
