Updating to new operating system??

should I update to Lion??

If you peruse the forum, you may believe that Lion is inherently unstable and has a ton of problems associated with it.  However this represents a tiny proportion of the Lion user community.  The problems that is has will be eventually sorted out with the future updates.  You are in an advantageous position of having Snow Leopard which would give you the option of retreating if Lion were proven a disaster for you.  New purchasers of MBPs do not have that option.  So for $30, is the risk that great?
I also have Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and I am waiting for 10.7.3.  I'm a coward.  Real reason, so far I have not heard of any features that I find are that compelling for my needs, but I suspect I will upgrade eventually,  Lion is the future, Snow Leopard is/will be the past.

You may be logged into iCLoud and the iTunes/App stores on separate accounts, or he may have downloaded some apps on your phone and they need to be updated.

  • Error message when updating to new operating system

I just bought the iPhone 4 and it did not have the new operating system.  When I try to download it my itunes goes through the whole process and then tells me there was an error and to make sure to check my network settings are correct and my network connection is active.  Any ideas??

Hi there! I'm new to Apple Discussions but I'm willing to help in anyway I can. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Try turning off your firewall, something could be blocking it. I also suggest a restart of your computer system, it may fix a few of those pesky bugs. It usually works with my other application problems.
    Hope I helped.

  • Updating to new operating system from circa 2008 OSX

My 2008 MacBook Pro is running Mac OSX 10.5.8. Recently I tried to use a Mac application I had downloaded but was told that it wouldn't work because my OS is so outdated (I haven't changed the OS since I got the Mac).
I went to an Apple download site to try to download a more recent OS like Mounatin Lion, but this wasn't possible because my machine needed a more recent OS just to be able to download a new OS properly (!!). Kind of a Catch-22!
I inquired with a tech person by phone who said I would have to buy an older (but not as old as OSX) operating system on something portable, like a USB zip drive. Then when that was loaded up, my OS would be able to understand the Apple download site enough to download the most recent OS versions, like Leopard or Lion or Mountain Lion. Is that really necessary?
Can this be solved by just taking the laptop to an Apple Store for an OS upgrade? I really don't want to have to leave the machine somewhere for a period of days, baby that I am. But I will if I have to.
Thanks very much for any help.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.

  • HT3964 My Mac OX 10.9.2 is unable to read any disk since I updated the new operating system on it a few months ago. How may I resolve this problem?

My Mac OS X 10.9.2 is unable to read any disc since I updated the operating system to Marverick a few months back. How can i resolve this problem because I need to retrieve very important information on my discs. Help! Thank you... paul

    Paul,
Your problem has nothign to do with your installation of Mavericks. I assume you are referring to your SuperDrive not being able to read any discs, is that correct? If so then please advise what troubleshooting steps you have taken?

  • Updated to new operation system and my screen is black

I updated my iPhone 4s last night and when I woke up his morning the screen will not come on. It still works, but it is black.

Next step would be setting it up as new device, explained here:
How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Try without using the backup first, in case the backup contains corrupt files. If the camera works, restore from the backup.
If the camera does not work after setting it up as new device, get it serviced by Apple:

  • HT4623 Updating to new operating system, but the update is hanging up on "rescue email" despite thef act that this is supposed to be optional.  The only option it seems to allow is that i furnish this email address, but then, once entered, i can't "next."

Updating to 7.02 and i have completed everything up to the rescue email address; however, the "next" option won't work and "back" simply deletes what i have added, but doesn't allow me to escape from the set up or move past what are supposed to be optional steps.  Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.
Thus, if you get it to work restore to factory settings/new iPod, not from backup

  • When updating the new operating system, I accidentally backed up my phone onto my husband's iPhone.  How do I get his old data back on his phone?

I can't find an option in iTunes to restore to a previous backup.  I know I have done this one time before when we got a used iphone 3G at one point and I was able to go back and install his old data on the new phone.  Now it is only coming up as my phone in itunes and it recognizes his phone as my phone even though his number is still saved on there.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  I know this has to be possible I just think I'm not looking in the right place.

    Syncing does not backup photos.
Backing up only backs up the photos taken with the device but is not a solution to maintaining you precious photos.
It is the user's responsibility to copy the photos taken with the device off the device to the computer.  Same goes for videos taken with the device.
Media on the device has never been included in a backup.
Sorry, but if you've lost the device (or it's been stolen) and you've failed to manage your data on the device, it is gone.

  • How can I restore my iPhone 3Gs after I tried to update to the new operating system.

I tried to upgrade my 3Gs to the new operating system(IOS5) and I got some kind of unknown error.  I told iTunes to do the back up before doing the upgrade.  The phone is stuck in restore mode with the "connect to iTunes" logo displayed.
I have the latest version of iTunes on my computer. I've restarted my computer.  The iTunes doesnt seem to see the iPhone, but when I connect the phone to the computer I hear the recognition jingle by the comoputer, the one you hear when when a piece of equipment is connected to the computer.  In addition, when i look at "my computer"  I dont see the iPhone in the selections of items connected to the computer.
I have tried all the reset proceducures with turning the phone off and using the home key.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

I want to buy a 21.5" new imac shortly. Will I be able to have a free update of the operating system to OS 10.9 when it arrives later this month?

Unfortunately there is no one here that can give you an answer; we are just users like yourself.
But based on past experience it has been known for free upgrades to be offered ... but not before the new OS is formally announced.   There have been several references of late to the imminent launch of Mavericks.  I think you can do no more than wait for the announcement.

    Hello 6underwood,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
    iOS: Troubleshooting car stereo connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3581
If you are experiencing difficulties with the connection between your stereo and device, disconnect the device, and then power cycle the stereo and your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. When the Home screen reappears, reconnect your device. If you cannot power cycle the stereo, turn the car off and then back on to allow the stereo to power off.
    Best of luck,
    Mario
