Updating without deleting everything on the ipod

Apologies if this is already written somewhere. I have itunes on two machines, and periodically, would like to add what's been purchased on one computer to what's already on the ipod and has been purchased on the other. But every time, the content that is on the ipod is not augmented by the update, it is totally wiped out, with only the new material remaining from the most recent update.

If you're going to get music off of two computers you need to put your iPod on Manual update; connect your iPod to iTunes; go to edit; preferences; iPod; and click on "manually manage songs and playlists." Also you will need to click and drag your music/video to your iPod when on manual update.

Is there a way to delete everything off the Ipod but not off itunes?

I have a 4g Ipod nano, and it is full so it wont let me add any new songs. I have gone into itunes and deleted songs from my playlist and tried to update my ipod but even when i delete playlists and songs it still says that i dont have enough room to add any more. Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. it won't remove anything from your iTunes library. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

Just to expand a little on Diane's post. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and the iPod should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
If you've wiped your computer/bought a new one...
You should be able to:
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

I had the same question as was asked here, and I see that if I turn off my Wi-Fi on my iPad I can no longer access the iTunes Extras. However, if the extras are streaming-based, why is the file size of movies with Extras so much larger than those without? Any other HD movie with a similar running time is between 1.5 and 2.5GB, all with Extras are between 3.5 and 5GB. The problem isn't the Extras, its the lack of space on my iPad.

This is the procedure for syncing music to the iPad.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Music Tab on the right.
Click on all of the albums or playlists that you want to sync - or the entire library if you like.
Click on the Sync Music Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
iCloud does not transfer the music on the Mac to the iPad unless you download it again on the iPad. iTunes Match may be what you are thinking of and you have to subscribe to that feature for a fee.
You have to sync the music that is already in your iTunes library to the iPad using iTunes. You can turn on Automatic Downloads on both devices for music and when you download music on one device it will download to the other device.
I get the feeling that you have never synced the iPad with iTunes before but you already have content on the iOad and are getting a message that the iPad will be erased if you sync with iTunes. If that is true, you need to transfer all iPad content into iTunes before you sync. This will help you with that.

i have a 30GB iPod, but i was wondering how you delete music from the iPod? and also is it possible to play the music from the iPod?

There are several methods of deleting songs from the iPod and/or iTunes, and the method you choose depends on the settings you have selected for your iPod.
If you have the iPod set to automatically transfer songs, and you no longer want a copy of those songs on either the iPod or in iTunes, simply delete the songs in iTunes. Highlight the songs you no longer want then right click and select "clear", or from the edit menu select "clear". Next time you connect the iPod, the songs will be deleted from there also.
Only do this if you no longer want the songs on both the iPod and your computer.
You can also use the "only update checked songs" method in the iPod options (right click on the iPod in the source list in iTunes and select options, then select "only update checked songs"). With this preference checked, you can remove the check mark from the songs in iTunes that you no longer want on the iPod. The next time you connect the iPod, those unchecked songs will be removed from the iPod whilst still being retained in iTunes. You can check and uncheck songs as you change your mind about what songs you want to put on the iPod. Songs that have no check mark against them will be skipped over when played back in iTunes.
If you have the iPod set to manually manage your songs, and you want to delete the song from the iPod only, then select the iPod in the source list of iTunes, or click on the "music" option underneath it to show all your songs. Highlight the song(s) you no longer want on the iPod, right click and select "clear", or use the edit menu as previously mentioned.
This method only deletes the songs from the iPod, so if you no longer want the song in iTunes also, you'll need to delete it from there separately using the method above.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, all these settings can be found in the summary screen.
If you want to delete everything from the iPod and completely erase the hard drive and start from scratch, then you can restore the iPod to factory settings.
Only do this if you have the songs in your iTunes library, or a back up somewhere other than the iPod itself.
To play music from an iPod through iTunes, you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
This will make the songs on the iPod accessible and playable.

I have had my ipod touch 4th generation for a couple months now.... Nowhere in the manuals or help sections does it tell me how to make individual pucture files(like that already on my computer) put onto my ipod touch.... I managed to make one and I can't remember how I did it but when I have the touch hooked up to itunes and try to pick which picture files from my computer to sync, a box always opens and says that it will delete everything in the original photo library that was in there.....
Can anyone help me there has to be away, I know someone has done it but they don't live here to show me!!!!

I do have a photo library on my computer, but in the photo tab in itunes for the ipod touch and there is nothing checked for syncing, cause when I do check it it always says its going to replace everything i have in my photo library on my ipod touch..... I have a copy of my iTunes folders from my old computer (taken 2 days before it died)

I've imported all the folders (music, apps etc) into the new computer's iTunes, but when I sync my iPod
I receive a window asking if i want to sync i need to erase and replace with the iTunes library on the computer.
I particularly don't want to do this.
My wife also uses my iTunes for her iPhone.

Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting Backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup and sync as necessary.
