Updating word 2004 on 10.4.11 system
Does anyone know if it is ok to update Word vrsn. 11.2 directly to
latest Word vrsn. 11.5.3 ?
I thought I saw someone say you should insert an intervening update
step.
My mac system is vrsn. 10.4.11.
Thanks for any advice.
I seem to remember that when I first discovered I had to keep updating my own Office 2004, attempts to jump to the latest failed: I had to install each succeeding update from where I was, in turn one at a time up to the latest. I suppose you should open Microsoft Autoupdate in your Applications folder and click on manual update.

In Word 2004 I can not save documents or quit. One suggestion is the recent security update. Any suggestins on how to fix?
Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
If you get a gray screen or some other hangup upon booting, try holding the Shift key down while booting to enter Safe Mode.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
#3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
That's it really.

Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.

To update Quicken 2004 to 2007, I need a Rosetta-capable Intel system. I have two Intel-based iMacs: MacBook 10.6.8 and iMac 10.8.3. Is either of these Rosetta capable? (I don't understand "Rosetta-capable".)

Although you did not indicate what exactly you needed to do, I thought that I would specify the exact instructions for you and others.
1) You need a PowerPC copy of either Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2007. If you do not already have one, you can download a full version of Quicken 2006 PPC from the Intuit website: http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--mac -/GEN82200.html
2) Make MANY backup copies of your Quicken 2004 data file.
3) On your MacBook with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with Rosetta installed, you would Launch either of these two PPC versions of Quicken and have this version of Quicken open your existing Quicken 2004 data file. It will automatically update the data file.
4) Go to the Intuit website and purchase for $15 their Quicken 2007 for Lion (which also works on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion): http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
5) Launch Quicken 2007 for Lion and open your updated data file.
You are now set to work on either of your Macs; or, as I do, on both of my Macs!

Weird save problem Word 2004 using OS X 10.4.x
We have major problems saving Word documents using Mac OS X 10.4.x on a server volume. What really makes it odd is that the problem only occurs in the afternoon. The problem has only been reported by users trying to save using Microsoft Word 2004.
When the problems occurs it is not possible to save or save as on the server volume - Can not find volume. The volume is available on the desktop. Saving the file on the desktop works fine.
Mac OS X 10.4.2/10.4.3/10.4.4 with all updates installed.
Microsoft Office 2004 Swedish with SP2 installed.
It is a Windows Server 2003 with MacShare IP 9 installed. We've had the problem for some time and have replaced the server during that time, the save problem still remains though. It makes no difference with or without MacShare IP installed.
Anyone have any ideas how to solve this one?Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When dealing with Windows environments, I find it best to save the files as archives before sending them over to Windows environments. The file naming conventions differing by operating system, and the formats of what get sent sometimes can get corrupted when moving from system to system. This I found especially true when saving to a PC formatted flash drive. To make a file an archive, save it on the Mac first, and the control mouse click the document in 10.3 or 10.4. The contextual menu brings up a create archive. It has been my understanding than 10.4's archive format is more compatible with Winzip and 10.3 more compatible with GnuZip, both of which you can find clients for under Windows. Both 10.3 and 10.4 have the ability to open these documents directly when saved as this format. -
I want to upgrade to snow leopard from 10.5.8. Im hesitant to proceed because I'm running iPhoto 7 and word 2004. I want to be sure these programs will still run and I won't lose my photos or the events I have ordered them by. Should i make a partition on my new Iomega external and clone it just in case? I'm running time machine and backing up all the time onto an old LaCie, and right now I have a copy of my iPhoto library on new Iomega, which I recopy every couple of weeks. I got the computer new several years ago and it came with iLife and 10.4 OS I think.
Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

Microsoft Word 2004 crashes repeatedly
Hello. I am running Word 2004 on an older Mac G4. It is running OS X 10.4.11.
Word has been continuously crashing for months. I tried repairing permissions, trashing Office and reinstalling a new version of it (which makes me think it's not Word with the problem), and trashing the preferences. None of this has helped and it still sporadically crashes (and doesn't save what I've been working on) which is extremely hindering my work.
Any suggestions on what else I can do to try and fix the problem or even figure out what the problem is? It just crashes and that screen that says "Microsoft Word unexpectedly quit" comes up.
Thank you!Hi,
I was wondering if you were able to resolve the issue. I recently had my computer in for repairs. They've changed the hard drive and erased my whole data which I asked to be saved. Anyway, since then word 2004 is acting weird and keeps crashing every 10-15 seconds. My main use of the computer is for word processing and it is dead to me now. Apple "genious' says it is a problem with Microsoft and not them. But it was working just fine before they replaced the hard drive and update the system
now, I am even more hesitating to update leopard which I heard similar problems occurring with Office.
To be honest, without the Office, MAC has no charm for me. I exchange files with PC users and I need my computer to do that easily.
So, anyway, have you had any luck to fix it? Please let me know. I desperately need help! -

Word 2004 print problems on Intel Mini
I'm trying to sort out some printing problems on an office Mini with an Intel processor. Word (totally updated) will not allow the print dialog or Page Setup to come up. Docs can be dragged and dropped on the printer, apparently using the last settings, but when selecting 'print' from the file menu, the menu just blinks and nothing happens. The problem also exists in Appleworks (also updated)... but does not happen in Excel, Preview, Text Edit, Safari, etc. I've run Printer Setup Repair, reset the printing system, re-installed the newest Epson drivers (for a cx4800, Intel version), installed the newest CUPS, run the combo 10.4.7 update, repaired permissions, run Font Finagler... basically everything I could think of, short of beating my head against the top of the mini. I don't know the answer to your question, but you'll have a good chance of getting the right answer at the Microsoft Word 2004 newsgroup which you can get to via Microsoft News Servers at the bottom of the Entourage folders list (left side of the screen if you're using the 3-window setup). The news group is:
microsoft.public.mac.office.word
and I recommend it because it's managed by several Microsoft "VIP'S" who seem to know everything there is to know about MS Office 2004.

New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004
Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
Thanks,
DaveI’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong. -
Error msg. after installing word 2004 for mac
I have installed my Word 2004 for Mac on my brand-new iMac. It works fine, but every time I open it, I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework Library." Anyone know what this means and how I can get rid of it? Many thanks.....Macquest
Apply all updates for Office. There should be an item named "Microsoft AutoUpdate" in your Applications folder. Run the app and let it download and install the updates it finds. If you're multiple updates back, you'll need to repeat the process after each update until it tells you that the software is up to date.

Regarding your suggestion to try the free LibreOffice, at the moment I don't need this, because I have downloaded a one-month trial Japanese Microsoft Office 2011 and can open my current files with that, although I do not want to revise any of my files until either this problem is solved, or I purchase a new MS Office.
Unfortunately there is not many MS Office software in English available here in Japan. I spoke to Microsoft Japan and even though they sell software, they do not sell any English verions of MS Office. Incredible, considering that the company itself is located in the US. They suggested I buy it from Amazon Japan, however Amazon do not have any available at this time and do not know if they will in the future.
Anyway, I have found a company which sells the downloaded English version (no disk). The software is Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011. I have not purchased it yet. It would take too long and the postage charges would be too high to purchase it from the US.
Hoping you have some good ideas.
Best regards,

Mircosoft Word 2004 opening when mac started up
Hi,
When I start up my mac, MS Word 2004 seems to want to start up. Do you know why this might be and how I might turn this off?

This is not really a major issue but more of a preference , but every time i open a blank word document i get an extra panel for saving as PDF, which is nice, but i want to disable it from showing up and if i want to enable later ic ould, i went to Format > Toolbars > deselected the PDF toolbar but everytime i restart Word 04 it reappears
I have Word 2004 installed, Adobe CS2, Acrobat professional 7 installed aswell
i installed the very same apps on another system but it doesnt showup either?
any way to disable the PDF toolbar from popping up each time?
thanks in advanced!Hello AppleNewton,
Acrobat Pro put that PDF tool in Word. Also in PowerPoint and Excel. To get rid of them, delete the following files.
Hard Drive/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/PDFMakerLib
Hard Drive/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Startup/Word/PDFMaker.dot
Hard Drive/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Startup/PowerPoint/PDFMaker.ppa
Hard Drive/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Startup/Excel/PDFMaker.xla
The last three may be in /Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Startup/. Depends on the version of Acrobat Pro.
The next time you launch Acrobat Pro or the Distiller, it will complain that these items are missing. Don't let it fix the problem, or they'll be back.
