Updgrade to the new Intel chip

I ordered my IMac G5 on November 30th. and received it on December 7th.
When less than a month later I saw the new intel chip and ILife version I got angry to Apple customer service for not telling me about this change.
Is there anything I can do to upgrade my Mac?
Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Adrian;
When you ordered the iMac G5 you had certain plans for it. With the announcement of the Intel iMac, what is your iMac G5 not doing for you now?
Or is this more a matter of envy, you iMac G5 is no longer the newest thing?
If you most have the latest and greatest, you can always sell it on eBay and order the new Intel iMac.
It is your call but if it is doing what you bought it to do, I personally would ignore the fact that is the latest and greatest and just use it.

Doesn't the "new" Windows operating system take up more system resources than Windows XP? Will that affect how my Mac operates?

  • Need help: Belkin Flip for Mac mini doesn't support the new Intel chip?!

    Hi folks,
I recently purchased a Mac mini Intel Core Duo and planned to use a Belkin KVM Flip switch for it and my Sony VAIO.
However, the current Belkin KVM Flip switch for the Mac Mini does NOT support the Intel Core Duo. Until Belkin comes up with a switch that does, I have to unplug and replug my monitor, keyboard and mouse into the appropriate computer to use either one. Obviously, that isn't very convenient. Has anyone else encountered this problem and come up with a better solution?
    Thanks.
Mac mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4)   KVM switch for a Sony VAIO

I think what you're saying is that I should just swap out the monitor cable from one computer to the other when I want to use that computer. Not elegant, as you say, but workable.
Given you want to use a Flip I gather you're wanting both of your computers permanently connected to your TV/display at the same time. To do that without a KVM you will need to, for instance, connect your Mac mini to the RGB input and then your Vaio to HDMI. So, to select which computer you want you actually want to view you use the display remote just like you would if you were swapping from your cable box to your DVD player. I would suggest you play around with whatever combination gives you the best quality for both computers as not all inputs to your TV have the same quality.
That takes care of video. Now, for USB, yes you will have to physically swap a cable although there are many ways you can do this which does in some way depend on how you place your computer and the peripherals you want connect to one or both computers. What you do is use a USB hub with everything connected (keyboard, mouse scanner etc) to it and which ever computer you want to use you connect it to the hub.
It's all about finding a solution that suits you the best.
PS As for the Flip, you might want to note that the Flip does NOT have digital DVI connectors. It has two analog VGA connectors which at high resolution does not perform at all well. I would suggest you ensure that the VGA performance to your 1080i TV is acceptable before buying this product.

  • Is there anything we will be able to do about the new intel chips?

If Apple decides to put Merom Core 2 Duo processors in the MacBooks later this year, will we be able to get Merom Core 2 Duo processors in our MacBooks?
Or are we just stuck with what we have in are MacBooks?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Sam, I understand the frustration of getting a new computer and then seeing it replaced with a newer, faster, and always cheaper model. Keep in mind a computer is a tool. An incredibly cool tool, but as long as it does the job that you bought it to do then it still has value.
No the CPUs will not be upgradable as they are soldered to the logic board in all Mac portables. The iMacs and the minis are a different story as they are socketed CPUs. Some people have already upgraded them with test samples of Core 2 Duo processors and they work fine.
Also, look at it this way. If your computer is outdated for your needs with one product update, then you didn't buy the right computer - or your needs changed considerably. In either case, that is something that is beyond Apple's control.
Don't worry about having the latest and greatest. It will only leave you poor and frustrated since you will always be playing catch up.

  • New Intel chips

    Hi
I want to upgrade my 12" Powerbook to a MBP. However I keep hearing comments (rumours) about the new Intel chips. Can someone please explain:
    1. What the chip is?
    2. What difference will it make to the current MBP confguration?
    3. When is it likely to appear?
    4. Should I buy now or really wait for the new chips?
    Thanks.

However I keep hearing comments (rumors) about the new
Intel chips. Can someone please explain:
I'm assuming you know that MBPs already use Intel chips and that you are referring to the Merom. Speculation is good in preparing us for what is to come, but there has been no official word on anything. In fact, there has been no unofficial word either. The fact, however, is that and a couple of Windows based laptop manufacturers have already announced the use of the Merom in their premier laptop computers. Apple is usually the leader of the pack, and unless they plan on taking a completely different route and surprising us once again, they should not be very far behind. Some speculate end of September.
    1. What the chip is?
As far as I know it is the Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom). In brief, it's just better and faster. I'm sure someone else can give the specifics.
    2. What difference will it make to the current MBP configuration?
Since there is no official or unofficial word on this, there is no way we can speculate as tot he MBP's setup.
    3. When is it likely to appear?
Speculation lends to late September, but nothing official or unofficial.
    4. Should I buy now or really wait for the new chips?
If it is not business-critical, I would absolutely wait.

  • New intel chips, and Logic Pro 7

How well does logic pro 7 run on the new intel chip sets?

According to users on the Logic forum here, Logic Pro 7.2 and above (the Universal Binary release of Logic) works very well on Intel Mac. Anything below 7.2 is PowerPC only, and will work very poorly on an Intel Mac, if it works at all.

  • Will my printer and scanner work with the new intel mac?

My first post.. so I hope i am in the right place! (was in wrong place last attempt!)
I want to buy the new intel...but I would like to know for sure if it will work with my scanner and printer.
Printer is Epson Stylus Photo 2100 and the scanner is Microtek ScanMaker 4900.
I have emailed both Epson and Microtek... phoned Epson.. and I still do not know the answer.
    The responses were
"At this point in time with have been given no information on whether our printer drivers will work or not....".
"Yes it will work with OSX 10.4"
"As you know this new intel chip has just hit the market. This particular configuration is in the alpha stage of testing. As of now there has not been any reports or customer correspondence of any concerns."
I have been scanning these posts and it seems that only the operating system is relevant? If anyone could help I would appreciate it. I am finally able to replace my old, old, well loved G4 but am worried I will make the wrong decision.

Thanks all for the helpful comments. I am getting closer to going out and buying the intel. As for the Canon printer... its not really an option for me, since the Epson cost me more than the computer will! But I will keep it in mind for the future. And do you think this applies to digital cameras as well Tomzo? I have been considering buying my first digital.. and thought the pentax might be best, since it apparently can use the lenses from my film camera.
Thanks again all..I will keep checking the apple site list and the web sites as suggested by you.

The cost of the Full Logic Pro 9 from the App Store is less than the cost of the discontinued Boxed Upgrade set for Logic Studio (if you could find one) ... so you might as well purchase the full Logic Pro 9 from the App store and be done.

  • New Intel Chip Compatibility & Dual Boot

    Hi folks,
Just heard about Apple's new Intel chip compatibility and had a quick question. I develop software on the Windows platform primarily but would love to be able to run the Mac OS for testing of web browser-related stuff plus the BSD-related stuff on the same computer.
Can this new O/S be installed as one boot partition of a dual/multi-boot computer? If so would you be kind enough to point me to the appropriate URLs?
    Thanks!
    Best,
    DD

PowerPC Macs can run a Microsoft application called Virtual PC that allows you to install and run Windows on a Mac. VPC emulates a PC, so it's fairly slow, but it's fine for doing things like checking websites for compatibility in Windows IE, etc. That's primarily what I use it for.
The new Intel Macs can't run Virtual PC (yet anyway), nor can they currently boot Windows, although supposedly that will change when Windows Vista comes out. Also, Microsoft is reportedly planning to release a version of Virtual PC that will run on the Intel Macs, and that should provide near native speed for Windows inside of Mac OS X.
As for running OS X on a PC, you can't.
This page is free and lets you check your website for compatibility with Safari, the default web browser on Macs: http://snugtech.com/en/safaritest/ I've never used it, but it seemed like it might be useful to you.

  • Apple aware of video problem in the new Intel iMacs

    Macworld Daily News

Apple investigates Intel iMac Front Row problems
    By Macworld staff
Apple has confirmed it is aware of, and investigating, reports of video problems in the new Intel iMacs.
Recent reports claimed that some users had experienced random horizontal lines and other video playback problems when playing video in Front Row.
"Apple is aware of this issue and is looking into it," the company said in an email to a web-based pressure group that has been gathering information on the problem. "If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare."
    The problem is allegedly software-based.

"Sure, I'd be more understanding had it been an issue that required a very special set of conditions to trigger"
Apparently it does as this issue is not affecting all users.
"As I was told, affected owners would not be proactively notified"
Where you you prefer them to use their limited resources, trying to figure out who MAY be affected and sending them some sort of detailed action plan, or spending the resources determining the cause of the issue and developing a solution that can be distributed to the ones who need it not only now, but those that may discover the issue next week?
I can understand that you are frustrated, and don't blame you for feeling that way, but this is an all new piece of technology and bugs are going to come up that were missed in testing. No company can afford to test at a 100% level. To do so would drive the costs so high as to make it impossible to sell the product, especially to the market the iMac is aimed at. Apple has a pretty darned good track record of resolving issues quickly when they appear. Until they do you only have a few choices. Use the workaround until the solution appears, waste time complaining about it, or sell the iMac and purchase a different product. That's really about all you can do!
It was good of you to spend your valuable time, and yes it is valuable, trying to help the engineers or service reps solve the issue. That they spent that much time with you should show their commitment to solving this issue.
Be patient, give them a chance, they have not had long to try and figure this out.

  • Can someone predict the spec's of the new Intel Mini's to current Mini's?

How much of a drastic or slight change will there be. If someone could just predict the spec's of the new intell's then I might just wait.. I don't want to get a product now that will be considerably outdated in about 5months now.. Will there be a big graphic power increase, processor power increase or what? Also, do you think that Apple will still have the Intel Mini's be at a great price? Will Intel Mini's be 500-700 USD's like the older PowerPC ones?
    Thanks!

The new 338S0987 chip from cirrus logic, used in the new 4s has inferior sound quality to the old cs42L61 chip found in the 4 and 3G.  Can the 338S0987 chip be improved?
The new chip is very compressed and has hissing artifacts.  It sacrifices sound quality for reduced energy consumption.  This is a problem for me because I am building a musical instrument app that is adversly affected by the new cirrus logic chip.  Audio fidelity is suffering.
Is there any chance for a software/driver tweak of this chip, or my I please request an improvement on the next iphone model?
