Upgarding macbook pro to an imac will timecapsule backup be ok?

hi there,
currently i have a macbook pro running 10.6.8 and i have been using time machine to backup to my time capsule (and the backup is upto date).  I will be shortly receiving my imac and i know when starting it up, it can detect a time capsule and i can restore. BUT my question is, will this be ok in restoring to my new imac, as this will come with lion on?
hopefully somebody out there has already done this?
thanks in advance

Ok I think I know what you mean...
You're getting a NEW computer, with a NEW operating system. And you are wanting to restore everything from ANOTHER computer, on a different OS to the new iMac.
This isn't really suggested through time machine...etc. because we are talking about totally different computers here, even your hard-ware settings will be different.
It looks like what you probably want is to use the MIGRATION ASSISTANT instead. That way, you can still keep your Lion OS on that new iMac, and it will pull the files from the SnowLeopard backup and gracefully install them.
BTW, when you first turn on your new computer, you will be present with a SET-UP ASSISTANT, IIRC. It's the same thing as Migration Assistant but will avoid making extra accounts since you'll be doing it right from the start.

  • How do I get iCloud to share info from my macbook pro to my iMac? I have all the updates on both but I am SO lost!!!

I am having a heck of a time syncing my macbook pro with my iMac. I have all the updates and followed the instructions on apple.com, but there is no communication with either device nor an option that I find to sync them up. When I turn on photo stream on either device, it only selects a few, maybe 1,000 out of the nearly 10,000 photos I have. I try selecting all and then choosing photo stream but with no luck. I know there's a lot of you smart people out there who know what I'm doing wrong. Please help!!!

The following is from this Apple document, iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ, and will help you understand how Photo Stream works:
    My Photo Stream
When you take photos on an iOS device, or import photos from your digital camera to your computer, My Photo Stream can automatically upload your new photos to iCloud and push them to all of your other devices.
When do photos upload to My Photo Stream?
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Since your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, be sure to select Photo Stream > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture. On your PC with Photo Stream enabled in the Control Panel, all of your photos will be imported into C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream.

  • How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or hard drive??

How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or to my external hard drive? 'Help' is not helping!!

    To move to another machine:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
To move to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do I move an imovie project on a macbook pro to an imac

I have an imovie project on a macbook pro.  I can't seem to export the movie.  I keep getting processing error -108.  I want to shift my project from my Macbook pro to my Imac.  How do I do this and import into imovie?

    Hi
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
    BTW:
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • Connecting iMac Keyboard to Macbook Pro while using iMac as external display

I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

No, not reliably.  If it's paired with both machines you can turn it off and turn it back on but it's a toss up which machine it will connect with.  If you took it to another room so the iMac didn't see it, you'd have to disconnect the minidisplay port/thunderbolt cable and then it would exit target mode display.

  • Is is possible to move/migrate everything from my partners macbook pro to my iMac on a separate user account?

    Hi there,
My wife just finished uni and has no need for her laptop any longer. I have an iMac that she has created a user account on and now uses this more than her macbook pro. We want to give her macbook away so someone can use it however im not sure how to move everything from her macbook pro to my imac and her user account.
Im not even sure if this is possible. Ive tried the Migration assistant but im scared i will wipe my iMac and everything i have on it.
Basically we both want to use the same computer, 2 different user accounts and she doesnt want to lose anything she had on her macbook pro.
I would appreciate some help =)

On the iMac log into your wife's account, then open System Preferences and select the Sharing tab. In the left window pane select File Sharing and look at the top to see the iMac's name. Then log in on her notebook and open a Finder window. In the sidebar to the left you should see Favorites and a list of folders, Devices and a couple of items, and then Shared and under shared you should see the iMac's name you saw previously. Click on it and the Finder window will change, a dark bar will appear near the top and to the right in that dark bar you should see a Connect button. Your wife should enter her account name on the iMac and her password. Now the window should display a short list of folders, one of which has the name of her account. Click on it and you'll see the folders on the iMac. Now she can simply drag and drop files from the notebook to the folders of the iMac.
Note: if there aren't too many files it may be simpler to just use a flash drive.

screenshare. look for your imac in the sidebar of your mbp finder window. right click and choose share screen. or there is an option for it when you click the user. either way, screen share will come up where you can control the desktop of the other computer after you login with the appropriate account.
you'll need to have screen sharing available in system preferences>sharing>screen sharing

There is a bug when doing “export mailbox” and import mailbox functionality.
    Workaround:
      > Open Finder and under the “Go” menu, hold down the option key.  The “Library” sub-menu will show up.
      > Copy the entire “Library > Mail” folder to a USB disk (it will not work if copying to a shared drive for some reason)
      > Take the USB disk to the new computer and do an “Import Mailbox” and select the copied Data file.  There will be LOTS of folders that come up for import, you can browse through and deselect what you don’t need (e.g. trash or junk mail), OR just import everything and then clean up from your mailbox.
      > The imported folders will show up in mail under the “On My Mac” area.

  • Which Mac suits my needs: MacBook Pro 15-inch, iMac 21-inch or iMac 27-inch?

I am looking to switch from a PC desktop.
I like the MacBook Pro 15-inch because of the medium-sized screen and the optional anti-glare display.
But, I like the iMac 21-inch because I have used a 21-inch running Snow Leopard (mostly for iMovie) and loved it. Also, portability is not a big concern although I would appreciate it.
The only reason I consider the 27-inch is because of the high specs. I love iMovie '11 and I am considering using that a lot and also playing games on the Mac.
I keep jumping between the MacBook Pro and the iMac. However, I can only recall the reasons I jump to the MacBook Pro from the iMac.
1: I can use it on an airplane and around the house.
2: If I had a MBP, I would not need a desk (which would create more space)
3: If I want to film and then edit the video in iMovie soon afterwards, a MBP would be much better.
The only thing I have never liked about notebooks is that in Google Maps I cannot use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out.

I think your advice on making a final decision on whether or not I want portability is very good. Thank you.
I would usually use the Mac for general use, but as I said, I am starting to get into video editing so it would be good to have that work well.
It depends. I only play three games on my PC. One of them has a weird disc so it can be played on PCs and Macs. That game's modifications are also not important to me.
The second game is an online download game which there is an OSX version of. That game's mods should not be a problem.
Now, the third game is what causes problems in this situation. I have many modifications and a multiplayer client currently installed for the third game. The third game is available for OSX but only through the Mac App Store, which makes me suspicious that I won't be able to mod the third game. But, I think it will be fine if I install a Windows partition with BootCamp to play it.
About what you said on deciding whether or not I want portability, I will have a think about that.
    Thank you.

  • Thunderbolt Display works with MacBook Pro but not iMac. Huh?

I have a Thunderbolt Display, which I normally keep connected as an "extended desktop" to my MacBook Pro -- no problem.
Starting today, I'm using a borrowed iMac and I had hoped to switch my Thunderbolt Display over and do the same arrangement: "extended desktop." However, the display does not come on when I power up the iMac, and clicking the "detect displays" button in the Displays Preferences window does not help.
This iMac was previously set up with an a different Thunderbolt Display in its original home, and seemed to work fine. I saw it with my own eyes. My own Thunderbolt Display still works fine when connected to my MacBookPro. It's only the combination of my monitor to the borrowed iMac that doesn't work.
Both the MacBook Pro and the iMac are running OS X Version 10.7.3. The MacBook has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M card, and the iMac is using an ATI Radeon HD 5750.
    Ideas?

Both the mini-displayport plugs and TB plugs are physically compatible which is why you can plug it in.   But if the iMac has a mini-displayport for video it won't work with the TB display.
Check your System Profile to see if it tells you whether you have a TB port.  And if there is no information about that post here or look up for yourself the kind of ports for that model of iMac.  System Profiler will give yo that information (click Hardware on the left).  From the model information it can be definitively determined whether that imac supports TB.
Also, so long as the Displays system preferences is not showing an Arrangement tab then it is not detecting the second display.

  • New iMac - need to move files from Macbook Pro to new iMac

    Hi there everyone,
Did some quick searching, but didn't find the answer that I needed.
I am picking up my new 27" iMac (base model) and will need to move my files and programs from my Macbook Pro to the iMac. What is the best way to accomplish this? Are there any tools on the iMac that will help do that, or is it a manual effort?
    Thanks!
    Mark

When you first start new Mac it will ask you if you want to migrate. Say yes at that point and Setup Assistant will migrate everything for you.

  • I upgraded a MacBook Pro and a iMac to 10.8.3

I upgraded a MacBook Pro and a iMac to 10.8.3.
Formerly the MB Pro was on 10.8.2 and working like a charm. (Lion, not Mt. Lion.)
Now both machines are working ok, just really slow. It takes almost a minute to open mac applications, like mail and Safari. I feel like they are both running like my old dial-up internet connection years ago.
I am so distressed, because it looks like it will be a huge deal to downgrade to earlier version.
I have not tried the combo update since I was so disgusted by all the time I had wasted. Do you think it is still worth a try?
    Thanks!

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
    Does this make a difference?

  • Transferring info from a MacBook pro to an imac

I currently have a MacBook pro and am considering getting a new iMac, I was wondering if there was any way to transfer all of my info on my MacBook pro to the iMac through Bluetooth or through my wireless network in my home some way. I was just wondering what the easiest way to transfer all of my info including iTunes to the new computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when your shiny new Mac first starts up. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).
You can do that directly from the old Mac, via FireWire or Ethernet (in theory you can do it via WIFI, but it will take forever).
Or you can transfer from the old Mac's backups, if they're full Time Machine backups or a "bootable clone," on either a USB or FireWire drive.

  • I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps. On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory, and it's based our Mail, the only app not updated. Ideas?

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?
