Upgarding RAM. need help identifying my MacBook's generation...

If i go by the specs mentioned here the generation is 6 but my MacBook's model identifier says 5,1.
Can someone explain. Also, why does it list only 4 Gb option (2x2gb) for generation 6?
Neerav

MacBook 5,1 is the 6th generation MacBook. Apple officially supports only 4 GB RAM (2 X 2 GB modules). But it actually works with 6 GB (one 4 GB module and one 2 GB). Anything beyond that doesn't work. The processor supports more than 6 GB, the motherboard supports it, but Apple has disabled it in the EFI. So if you really want more than 6 GB then look for EFI hacks (which I strongly oppose).
Good luck.

Provided the computer-end fits, you are free to use one with a HIGHER Wattage rating. No damage whatsoever will be done to any component, but it will likely run cooler (but may be slightly heavier).
If you use one with too LOW a Wattage rating, you will not be able to charge and run at the same time, and your computer's top speed (for its most intensive computations) will be limited.

  • Need help buying 15inch Macbook

I am an industrial design student and need help configuring a macbook pro. Should I go for the 2.3Ghz model or the 2.6 one? I prefer the 2.3 Ghz one as it is cheaper. Should I get an extra 4gb ram? I do not play games, will be mainly using sofware such as solidworks and indesign on it. I am not considering the retina display models. Also, should I pay $100 to get an antiglare screen? I do have poor eyesight and think this would be a good option.
    Thanks

You'll get a lot of advice here, but I feel the most important point when working with InDesign, is to get as much RAM as you can afford.  I have the non-glare MBP, and I also have the regular screen iMac.  I like them both.  I think you should think about where you will be working the most, and how much light will be there.

  • MSI P67A-G43 (B3) - Need help identifying this postcode

    Need help identifying this postcode:
    CPU:i7-2600k
    Mobo:MSI P67A-G43 (B3)
    PSU: Corsair 750w
GPU isn't the problem since I replaced it and still get this postcode. RAM isn't the problem since I've tried four different sticks one at a time in each slot and still get the postcode. Getting no live video from the GTX580 and no onboard video. I think either the mobo or the CPU is the problem, don't want to have to send both in for RMA so if anyone can help me identify the postcode that'd be great.

    Hey Ctrl
Well I happen to have the same beep code on my motherboard (P67A-C43 B3), after trying different suggestions from the MSI forum users and MSI technical support I ended up RMA(ing) my motherboard.
You can try resetting the CMOS, by flipping the battery and leaving it like that for 5 minutes and putting it back to its original side. I highly doubt it is your cpu. Like anybody in the forum might suggest, try different components which appears you already did. I doubt your corsair is faulty. CPU and motherboard are your best bet that are faulty, and i highly doubt that it is the CPU because for there to find another person (you) that had the same problem as me since last friday (RMA board yesterday, wednesday) I find it highly unlikely.

  • Hello, I need help with my macbook pro. It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, use the migration assistant or click the lock to make changes, it simply does not react.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

I need help identifying an old Macintosh game: it was a painting game where you rode a roller coaster to an art museum and you got to pick what kind of art work you were going to make. It was animated, 2D i believe. This was the early 90's and I've been trying to hunt it down. I think there was some kind of animal in it, a giraffe maybe?

Could you be thinking of Microsoft Home's "Fine Artist" for Macintosh, as shown in this Amazon.com listing?  This program was bundled with the Performa series of Macs during the mid-90s.

Look for cloud solutions such as DropBox, OneDrive, SugarSync or others. They are all cloud based services that sync documents between computers via the cloud. Of course another solution is simply a flash drive formatted in exFat so that Macs and Windows computers can read it.

  • I need help on my MacBook Pro. Recently I've deleted another partition of my disk from the disk utility and I found out that my disk capacity wasn't get into the normal one which is 750GB. Meanwhile I installed window 7 into the partition disk.

I need help on restoring my disk capacity back to normal. I installed window 7 into the partition disk through bootcamp and I deleted it from disk utility. After I erase the partition disk,I get my capacity to 499GB but not 750GB. Do I need to reinstall my MacBook or something to do with the restoring?

You shouldn't do it. You have to erase the Windows volume with Boot Camp Assistant, so it will restore the space onto the OS X volume and that volume will have 750 GB.
As you did it with Disk Utility, you have to resize your OS X partition manually:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, and go to Partition tab.
    2. You will see a bar with Macintosh HD. You have to click it at the bottom right corner and drag it to the end of the bar, so Macintosh HD will use all the space of the hard drive, and press Apply.
    3. Close Disk Utility and your OS X partition will have 750 GB

  • Need help with webcam, macbook pro

    Please help!
I need to set up a wireless webcam to monitor a litter of puppies while I am at work. Home computer is an iMac 24 inch, at work I can plug in my MacBook Pro, or use the office PC network. I need help in selecting a web cam (wireless, as pups are far from computer) and setting up so I can log on via an internet connection.
    Many thanks for your suggestions!

They aren't cheap, and use a browser to view the images. Most require a wireless network at the remote location too ...

  • Need help identifying controller information in hyperdraw

    Hello,
Sorry if this is a dumb questions, but I'm in the middle of a project and need help ASAP. In one of my tracks (Real Guitar) there is some form of controller information present at the start of the track and I have no clue what it is! Is there a preference/key command that shows all data in hyperdraw, and then lets you select it (similar to the way the matrix editor works if you double click in the background, and then click on a specific note?)
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    Jonathan,
I use the method that Jim suggested. I have the "H" key programmed for autodefine. (I've also got another two keys programmed to simply turn hyperdraw on and off for the selected region(s)). Autodefine is very cool. If there are, say, 4 different controllers in the track, hitting H the first time will show you the lowest-numbered controller; hit it again and it shows you the next higher number controller, and so on. The controller number is displayed in the lower LH area of the hyperdraw display for each region.
If a track contains controller information for multiple channels, you'll see two numeric values in the lower LH corner -- the controller number and MIDI channel for that controller, separated by a comma.

  • Need help identifying error message on 13-inch 2012 MacBook Air

The laptop was in a damp case for 15-20 minutes; a failed boot attempt was made.  I was called at this point, and advised the user to put it in a bag of rice to pull the moisture away.  Today, she was able to boot the system, but it would shut down after a short-period of use and was running very slowly.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it generated the error code 4SNS/1/40000000: ID0R-4.557
Does anyone here know what that error code means?

It's a sensor error. I'm not sure which one. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Need help identifying problem (lockup/freezing in Warcraft III & CS)

    my macbook pro:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
    Serial Number: W862318KVWY
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
It freezes and has black screens during games in which apple Q and force quit doesn't work. I would need to restart the comp. when it freezes the sound would stutter, repeating whatever the game had playing.
things I tried but the macbook pro still froze:
running the game off USB storage device(so i think HD is fine)
wiping HD and reinstalling OS, updating everything and playing it on both USB and the installation of game (not 3rd party apps)
opening the macbook pro and cleaning out the dust (didn't take anything out, just blew dust off)
resetting RAM with apple options P R
took RAM out and put it back in
ran apple hardware test (everything was okay)
running a different game (Counter-Strike on CrossOver and still froze)
Disk Warrior 4 (only minor repairs and it froze in the test game after i ran DW4)
booting system from an external and running the game from USB
    things to note:
although sometimes when it freezes, the temperatures are really high - even with fan control (70-80C) but, i've reproduced the lock up with the temperatures at 60C, so i don't think its a heat problem (thermal paste and whatnot)
sometimes in safari, quicktime, itunes, or just on desktop picture i would see a single, horizontal, 1 pixel-height distorted line running across the screen, which i can take screenshots of. no idea what's causing it but it could have some relation with the freezing/lockups
some days it will run without problems for the entire day, just to see lockups the very next day. I think it could be random.
    help please..

    =\ no one....

  • Need help about refurbished MacBook Pro 15" 2012 vs 2013

    Hello All,
I'm planning to buy a refurbished MacBook Pro since I'm tight with budget. This would be my first mac machine ever. So I was hoping if someone can shed some opinion on which one should I go for. But first, I will be using the MacBook for basic photoshop, Office documents (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint), internet, and maybe (just maybe) if I have time from my busy work, I could try to learn in movie editing (just for fun). So anyway, I found 2 refurbished 15" MacBook Pro that fits my budget and seems like they're quite similar (2012 and 2013). The 2013 is only $20 more.
    1) Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display - $1,469.00

So it looks like the difference between the two is obviously the CPU, the 2012 having an extra GPU, and the 2013 uses the Thunderbolt 2 as far as I know. And I'm not sure if the SSD on the 2012 is SATA as oppose to the 2013 it's PCIe? Base from what I explained above on how will I'll be using the MacBook for, is the 2012 best fit for my needs or is the 2013 a better one?
Thanks all. Please remember I don't have any experience with Macs at all. So I'm hoping someone can help me a little bit. Thanks again.
    - Eddie

PS: side-by-side specs, graphics and drive data rates,
the newer of the two may be the better one to get, as
it has later Thunderbolt  with higher capacities, too.
Look into mactracker or other specification chart that
can be opened beside each other (as I have now) &
then you can see sections in each model, one at a
    time. MacTracker shows general-software-memory+
    graphics-connections-history by category.
2013 model Thunderbolt, Hard Drive Interface, graphics
spec all look good. Not sure if the history of graphic issue
in the dual-graphic card model 2012, was overcome or not.
However this may require some research...
If yours is one that shipped with Mavericks OS X 10.9
you may do well to get a copy of the installer on a
USB and dedicate it as a backup or set up a second
drive or other device to safe a download of the installer
and/or a copy-clone of the Mavericks. The limited total
of RAM available may not be a problem, with both units
shipping with an SSD and not a rotational HDD. And if
you like (& if yours has OS X 10.9) you could then use
OS X 10.10 too.  Be careful an 'upgrade' isn't done to
an older system by accident; surprises aren't so nice.
With either choice, be sure to get & make suitable backup
of your files in addition to a device to use Time Machine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Web Design/Graphic Arts Student needs help choosing a Macbook.

First post on board so greetings!
I have went back through all the archives and read every post I could on purchasing a Macbook for Web Design/Graphics but would like more info.
Being a first time Mac user I am a little overwelmed by the all the guru talk. I will be going back to college next month for mainly Web Design/Development with Graphic Arts thrown into the program. The College has Mac Desktops to use but some of my classes will be online and I would like the portability of a Macbook to work from home with.
I will be having to use Adobe Creative Suite (all 10 programs within it) and Autodesk 3ds Max. Being that I will be dealing with graphics I am willing to pay for the 15" Retina Screen. I have read that the Quadcore I7 processor may be over kill since alot of programs will never use the extra cores but with technology changing all the time I don't want to have tot upgrade in 2 years.
So I'm looking for suggestions and will gladly add more info to help make my choice...
    Thanks in advance!

    welcome to the ASC-
I would buy quadcore, with RAM maxed out and the largest HD for your specified needs.
Web Design/Graphic Arts you will have many software packages running simultaneously to do your work.
