Upgrad, Restart and Kernal Panic
I am trying to upgrade my iMac to Snow Leopard from Leopard, everything goes well during install then when it finishes and reboots I get a kernel panic error asking me to restart. Any suggestions?
To erase and install, just insert the your install DVD shortly after you power up (yes, you can do an erase and install using the "upgrade" disk). Hold down c while you are starting. Make sure that your disk uses the GUID partition table. After you select your language, look at the menus at the top; select Utilities; and start Disk Utility. Select your drive and make sure it uses GUID. If not, go to Partition and change the partition to GUID. Doing so will format the drive Mac Extended (journaled) (recommended). If not, then you can format again to use Mac Extended (journaled). Just use the quick format option if you need to format. After all of this, quit Disk Utility and continue your installation.
Be sure you are connected to the internet when you install if you can. Doing so is likely to make some things easier towards the end of your install. At this time, you will be given some options that may allow you to recover your users, settings, apps, and data. If your prior installation is not working well, then I would not restore anything but your data and possibly you apps if you have many that will have to be reinstalled.

Mac randomly restarts and kernal panics
This is what happens if I move my laptop too much or when I do certain things. I don't know what to technically call this problem and usually when this happens I have to restart. Sometimes it automatically restarts and sometimes its kernal panics. I just really want to know how I can fix or if I can fix this at home because it usually happens at the worst times and its getting really annoying so if anyone knows a fix, I'll be very grateful! The battery is messed up and isn't in the laptop if that helps
I believe it's a sign your GPU is failing which is a common issue with your model. Take it in for service. I believe Apple may have a replacement program that has not yet expired.

Windowserver crashes and kernal panics from iPhoto in Mountain Lion
I am using a Mid2010 MBP 15inch i7. I have just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Currently whenever I try to open iPhoto my MBP completely crashes and reboots woith each report stating a windowserver crash or occasionaly a kernal panic. I was having similar problems in Lion when with windowserver crashes when switching between windows or scrolling in Numbers or switching to iPhoto from other apps. I upgraded to ML because I was told this may fix the issue. Now i can't keen open iPhoto. I have Pram restarted and iPhoto opens but as soon as an image is selected I have another window server crash. Pre ML install I did a clean install of Lion and it made no difference.
Posted below is a copy of my last error report. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully no one here told you that. A common theme is people blaming all problem on Lion or Mountain Lion, whatever operating system was just released and telling people with obvious hardware problems that they need to wait for a "bug fix". Updates come and updates go - taking warranties with them - but no fix ever happens.
There is a small possibility that the "Soundflower" kernel extension is giving you problems. It is very unusual to see a kernel panic without Soundflower being listed. If you remove that and still have panics, then it is definitely a hardware problem. -
Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive
Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
Thanks,
MaryHi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

Neither RAID nor drives showing up! And kernal panics after 10.4.5
I have a RAID 0 set of two Iomega HDDs. The HDDs are working (power on, spin ok) but neither the RAID nor the individual drives how up in Disk Utility or the desktop. This happened after a kernal panic (see below). Everything was fine before this happened. How do I get the drives back?
After upgrading to 10.4.5, none of my FireWire based recording apps record direct to disk except FCP. BTV Pro and EvoCam both cause kernal panics when I try to record from my DVMC-DA2 (Sony analog to digital converter) to a file. This probably caused the above problem.I fixed it myself. I restarted my computer from the CD and repaired permissions and disk. I then plugged my 2 HDDs in and they showed up in Disk Utility. I repaired the disks and restarted and the RAID showed up again. Everything seems to be working now.

Spinning Beach Ball of Death and Kernal Panics - Capacitors?
Hi,
I got this email from my mother. This is her computer, not mine. I'm technically adept, so I'd be able to help her. I'm not sure this is actually a kernal panic, or if it's another issue such as capacitors?
================
Lately sometimes (at least every couple of days) when I first turn on my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, OS 10.3.9) after it's been shut off all night long, I get the colored spinning beach ball of death for a minute or so. Then the background on the monitor turns grey-green and in a box in the middle of the screen is "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button" - this is written in four languages. I assume this is a kernal panic. When I restart the computer it's okay.
When I turned it on yesterday, however, the monitor was blue, but not normal blue as it was all "wavy." The dock only appeared about halfway up from the bottom of the screen, and only the bottom part of "Mail" appeared - no Mailbox or anything else. I turned it off with the power button and it was then all right.
Today the same thing happened, but I didn't get anything on the screen, except it was a "wavy blue" so I again used the power button to turn it off, and then when I restarted it it came on fine.
I've also noticed that the computer is much slower these past few weeks than previously, especially when using Safari. I have also seen the spinning beach ball of death in black instead of the usual colors.
I have not installed any new programs lately, nor ran any Software Updates lately. I have recently repaired my Permissions.
================
Thank you in advance for any suggestions and advice.
RobbiHi,
Here is the kernal panic log. Thanks. We have done Dr Smoke's Resolving Kernal Panics.

In updating OS to 10.4.7 last year, I had an issue with the computer seemingly running very quickly, as though it was doing sixty in first gear. I learned it was a "kernal panic" issue (if you don't know what those are, good!) and that upgrading the firmware would fix it; I tried that and fried the drive.
Bought new drive, didn't use the old one, didn't look back. Now the same symptom has started up again, but I don't find any more references on Apple's site for 'upgrading firmware'......anyone know anything about that for powermac machines?
I'd be most gratefulHi, tbfa.
If your question is "How do I troubleshoot a kernel panic?" then this may help.
If you are seeing the following message
that indicates a kernel panic.
If so, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Good luck!

My computer has had alot of kern panics and stalls in the past month. I would run my Apple Hardware disc to see if there is a problem but I dont have one. The only discs I got with my computer was the os9 install disk. Were can I get one or get a disc image to make one? Also I have checked the logs and it readslike this on the crash and I have the kernal panic info under it. I can't read these things can I have someone help me out????

You might see if there's a MUG (Mac Users Group) anywhere in your area and contact them to enlist some help on that front. Or take it to an Apple repair shop for a diagnosis.
I'm not good at reading logs, but I have a good idea on the first and last entries you posted. The first referenced a dependency to the USB drivers; the last one was the video card or drivers.
I'd pull all your peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse and do an Open Firmware reset. To boot into Open Firmware, restart and hold down the Command-Option-O-F keys until you get to the OF screen. At the prompt enter the following, pressing enter for each line:
reset-nvram
reset-all
reboot
Run for a while and see if you still get the hangs and KP's. You can also sometime eradicate the KP's with an Archive and Install of the OS, but I'd try isolating down to your hardware config first.

Startup trouble and kernal panics
Okay, I feel like crying . . . I am not that Mac savy so here is the dilemna.
When I startup my IMAC the screen will either
1. Go to a grey screen with different languages telling me to restart ( I have been reading about Kernal panics . . . )
2. Computer starts up and the picture is all jagged with lines running horizontally through it and it is shaking . . . freezes or then it goes to restart screen.
I have reinstalled the MAC OSX software and then it is fine. But I have not done an erase and install. I am in the process of backing up my system. But if I shut it down or restart, it starts all over again . . .
Do I have a serious problem ? Here is the other problem . . . we do not have the extended warranty. We bought it before the warranty was up, but did not register it before the year ran out . .. A MAJOR MISTAKE!!! Now I am really crying . . .
Thanks for any help possible.
Laura
I MAC G5 Mac OS X (10.3.8)Hi Laura, welcome to Discussions, sorry your first post has to be so traumatc!
Once you have backed up your system (very good idea), insert your startup disc and run the Extended Hardware Test. That might indicate what your problem is. Also, if you have a Rev A iMac (without iSight or ambient light sensor, you can check this site iMac release dates to see which model you have), see if your serial number falls within the range of the Repair Extension Program, which will repair your machine for free if it's included.
Do post back with your results, hope this is a little reassuring, all is not lost.

Cd won't eject and kernal panics: what does it mean?
I've been getting kernal panics from time to time recently, and just last night a burned DVD refused to mount, show up in Disk Utility, or eject. i tried rebooting with the mouse down with no effect, and then i tried option-apple-O-F'ing and typing "eject CD," but it told me "can't OPEN the EJECT drive." is there anything i can do to get the DVD out? i'm out of warranty and apple care at this point.
The drive still makes noises on bootup, so at least the power is connected correctly. But I just checked System Profiler, and under Disc Burning it says, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." Does this just mean that the drive somehow got disconnected? Would it be worth my while to open the computer up and make sure the connection is tight?you'd be wasting your time; its so tight in there that the optical has no place to go.

Applecare And Kernal panics.
Ok so I have this ibook 14" 1.2ghz
I have had MAJOR problems with it for a long time. I have sent it to apple at least 7 times. and it still gives me kernal panics and freezes at random times....
Will apple replace it because I still have it under an extended warranty or no? I would like a new mac book :P or just my old ibook just a working one.
It might be the CPU...
Will they replace it under warranty yes or no? I mean the whole thing cause they seem to not be able to fix it and Comp USA is getting tired of seeing my face. After 3 times I would have asked for a replacement. Whether they'll replace it is anyone's guess. We can't guess Apple's policy as the Terms of Use say. Just with a firm voice speak with them and tell them what you've been through.
I also suggest looking over my kernel panic FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Note that CompUSA is not where I'd take it, I'd take it to a better authorized service center in your area as listed by http://www.apple.com/buy/
The big superstores tend to have lousy support. Except Apple's retail.
Call 1-800-APLCARE and tell them what you've been through, and if you have to, also speak to customer relations.

Random Shutdowns and Kernal Panics
I've got an early 2008 Mac pro with 4 gigs of ram. Runs great, except I get a few KP's a week and recently it's been randomly just restarting. Fans aren't running, it's well ventilated, and there doesn't seem to be anything consistantly causing the restarts or the KP's.
Anyone else having this issue? If so, any suggestions? I've been to Apple, but it's never done it while there so they don't know what to tell me.
Any help appreciated.
MikeJust to exclude that the Kernel Panics (KP) and your restarts are a separate issue, you might like to have a look at that discussion:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7709762#7709762
(the deletion of the preference files sorted out my restarts, and the
monitor USB cable is certainly a point mentioning).
Reference the KP's, as this could be EITHER hardware or software (or BOTH!) related, I would follow the advice given about the RAM.
Good luck. -
Problems with MacMini 2.1 restarting and kernel panic
For the past few weeks I have been having a very frustrating problem.
Occasionally, when my MacMini goes into sleep mode I am unable to wake it and it must be hard restarted (holding down power button). When it restarts I get the startup chime, immediately followed by truncated echos of the chime (not beeps or tones), which can repeat every couple of seconds for up to five minutes. This is followed by the computer restarting itself over and over again until I get a kernel panic (log attached below). Once I restart after getting the kernel panic the computer usually starts up fine and is fully usable until the next time I can't wake it up from sleep mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is EXACTLY what my MacBook Pro keeps doing. Have you figured out what the problem is? I recently to my Mac to the Apple store to address the issue, and the one thing they were able to tell me, was that the battery was bad. They couldn't say if the two were related, because I didn't have the error message at that time, but it seems like the two could be related. I would have them check your battery, it could be the reason why the computer goes to sleep and doesn't turn back on. I am able to use mine just fine, other than this problem, but was told that I need to have the battery replaced. Would love to se what you find out, or have found out, maybe it can help me solve the problem on my end as well (if not due to the battery...)
Tahnks!

Forced restart and kernel panic at hibernation
Hey Folks!
My MacBook forces a restart (with grey screen and the corresponding message) and indicates a kernel panic every time I send my MacBook to hibernation. The restart then works perfectly fine. Does anyone have a clue, what the reason for this might be?
Best regards from Stuttgart,
Torsten.
Message was edited by: toscho72Hi Carolyn,
You may probably the one that can help me out.
I bougth a Mac Os X Leopard just 9 months ago. The first 4 months the new computer was still packed (because we were abroad).
So just a few months ago we opened the package, started the computer and we were happy to see it working. After a while, however, the computer oes not act to any command any more. A little round circle can be seen on the screen (with different colours inside and spinning wheel).
A forced stop does not work. So the computer needs to be shut down and then restart it. Sometimes, after restart, it makes strange bleeps after each second and the computer does not start up.
A few weeks ago the computer was taken from our home in order to investigate the computer (a company names Card Benelux: very impolite people) and a new hard-disc was inserted.
Now, the same problem is there again: the spinning wheel after some time working on the computer.
Do you know what this is? It seems that the company selected by Mac did not know how to solve the problem.
Sincerely yours,
Marcel
