Upgrade 10.5.4, blue screen, tried Support suggestions - Now Stuck

I have a G5 (dual 1.8) and attempted the upgrade to 10.5.4. There wasn't enough room on my primary hd, so I pointed the install to a second installed identical drive. I got the blue screen after install. I searched support and found: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1545
I tried A (fire wire to laptop) and couldn't find the file. I made the mistake of ejecting the OSX disk when it appeared in the Finder window (out of habit). Still the blue screen. I then tried C and all commands seemed to work. Still blue screen. I now want to try B (Archive Install), but the OSX disk is no longer in the optical drive. I don't know how to get it in and I don't know how to interrupt startup without it there. I'm a bit of a novice here, so I hope I didn't miss something obvious late at night. All help is appreciated. Thanks.

This might work. There's a little hole underneath your optical drive on the front. Hard to see. Insert a straightened paper clip into the hole and the cd/dvd tray should pop out a little bit. Grab the end of the tray and pull it out fully. Now put in your disk and when you start up the tray will close and you'll have the disk in the machine to start up from when you press and hold down "C". Might want to perform a Disk Utility check first when it starts up from the disk and then archive and install.
Good luck

In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?

  • Pavilion dv7 blue screening - HP support assistant cannot test BIOS or memory modules but BIOS can?

About a month ago my dv7 started doing something strange - during normal use (not gaming, just word processing, showing a powerpoint presentation, showing a video on youtube, etc.) the cooling fan speed would suddenly ramp up to jet-engine speed and shortly thereafter the computer would blue screen, crash dump, etc. (no, I did not write down any info from the blue screen message - I will do so next time). Having experienced a blue screen issue with a Dell laptop I thought the hard drive was going bad, because about the same time I was suddenly unable to run a backup of the hard drive. After several attempts, I was finally able to backup the hard drive, and then replaced it with a new drive, re-installed OS with my recovery flash drive, worked through all of the windows updates that were recommended, and thought everything would be good to go. Now I have no problems backing up hard drive, etc. Then on day 2, after only a few hours of use, the cooling fan speed suddenly ramped up again and the blue screen returned.
A friend who is a tech suggested running HP diagnostics on everything, so I rebooted, hit F2, and started by testing the hard drive; as expected, no problems there. I next tried to test the memory (8192 MB total in two modules), and the test failed. I also tried testing the BIOS, and that too failed. The HP diagnostics reported that it couldn't even read the BIOS. Hmmm, strange. So I re-booted, hit F10, and went into the BIOS (BIOS date 10/5/11, revision F.1B). I HAVE NOT IN ANY WAY MODIFIED THE BIOS - I'm good, but not that good. Via the BIOS test utility, I tested both memory modules independently and then together, and everything checked out fine. I also tried switching modules between slots and re-tested via the BIOS utility, and that too checked out. I then returned to the HP diagnostics utility and tried re-testing the memory (both modules together - failed, one module at a time - both failed, in both slots).
HP tech experts, can you give me any guidance? This has been a great machine for me, I have taken good care of it, and am hoping to get a few more years out of it (I'm a middle-school science teacher, can't afford another one at this point). If I can't find a fix, I may have to go back to using my antique overhead projector in my classroom...

    Hi @h20roks ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7 and  getting the BSOD and shutting down. I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings. Not rollback.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that could need updating.
    Hope this helps you.

  • IMac G5 - boots up to blue screen - tried everything

I have an iMac G5 (no iSight) 2GHz. Came across following problem (running MacOs 10.4.11):
    - Normal boot: Mac goes through normal start up, but never gets beyond the blue screen - i.e. just before log in.
    - Safe boot: boots up OK & can log in.
Up to this point, has been working fine for however long I have had it (maybe 3 years, I think).
I have trawled through the various sites and tried everything, including:
    - Resetting PRAM
    - Resetting SMU
    - Disk Utility - repair permissions (some problems, now fixed)
    - Disk Utility - repair disk (no problems)
    - Apple Hardware Test from install disk 1 (no problems)
    - Re-formatting disk & re-installing Mac OS from install disks (MacOs 10.4)
None of the above has fixed the problem - in normal boot it stops at blue screen, and if safe boot it gets through OK & works fine.
Next stop is the local Mac repair shop. But before I head off there, I wondered if anyone here could suggest anything.
The following link has three docs - full system profile, console log for unsuccessful boot (i.e. to blue screen) and console log for successful boot (safe mode):

  • Solaris 10 05/08 upgrade from 06/06 = blue screen

    Hi Guys,
I did a fresh installation of Solaris 10 06/06 (x86) on a HP ML570 G3 box. Everything worked 100% except that I had to add the Compaq Smart Array 3200 driver during setup. I then downloaded the 05/08 x86 patches and started the patching in Single User Mode. After a few patches it asked for a reboot and I did an INIT 6 and then INIT 1 and started the patching process again. After quite a while at about 230+ of 433 patches it gave an error and I did an INIT 6. Now it stops at a blue screen thats all garbled(Language Options) with and option of F2 for Continue and F6 for Help. When I press F2 the options changes and the nothing further happens.
Any ideas on how to correct this?
    Regards
    J

The minimum supported version for a 5120 is Solaris 10 8/07.
And they wouldnt say that without a good reason.
Its pretty silly of a software vendor to specify a particular version of Solaris 10.
Unless they mean that version or later.
I mean suppose its certifed for Solaris 10 8/06 and you start with that.
Then you run smpatch and apply all available patches.
What you end up with is virtually indistinguishable from Solaris 10 5/08 anyway.
So unless, they certify a specific version and also specify the set of patches you are allowed to apply.
Then the restriction is virtually meaningless.
Personally I suggest you just go with Solaris 5/08 and be done with it.
As far as I know, theres no way for you to use the "earlier" version without buying new hardware.
The closest you could come is to run it on a solaris 9 zone.

  • T61 - Blue screen error message (nv4_disp) - Now computer won't even start!

Hi I have a Lenovo T61 (Type: 7662-CTO) Windows XP.
A couple days ago, all of sudden my screen turned in a yellowish hue, started flickering intensely and froze; I had to manually shut it off (by pushing the power button).
Next day, I started my computer and it worked fine until I had the exact same flickering and freezing issue, but this time, the screen didn't turn in a yellowish hue. Once again, I manually shut it off and went to bed.
This morning, however, when I started my computer, my screen went totally blank, though I could hear my computer running. I hooked it up to my TV to see if anything comes up and that's when I got this blue screen of error message.
    It says:
     ================================================================================
Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

    ==================================================================================
It would show this blue screen very briefly and rebooted by itself (without letting me log in windows), so I had to once again manually shut it off.
I thought perhaps cleaning a fan might help, so I opened up my laptop, cleaned the fan, keyboard, palm rest etc and assembled it back together.
When I turned on my computer, now I'm getting NOTHING. Not even a blue screen. Computer would start, but very briefly after (just a few seconds after), it would just shut it off by itself.
Someone please tell me what's wrong with my computer and if I can revive it at all.
Also, would you recommend me to bring it to the local Lenovo repair center (http://bplocator.lenovo.com/)?
Thanks so much for reading a long message.

You can find the latest driver for your system here. Another option would be to run ThinkVantage System Update, which is hopefully on your system, if not you can find it here.
I'm not saying this is the solution or ruling out a hardware problem, (which the flickering suggests), but it's a good place to start

In which case its still under full warranty and you should be able to get a repacement at the place of purchase.
Take it back and ask for a replacement. It seems to be there's some factory defect to it.

  • Macbook Pro had blue screen of death.  Now hard drive wont wake up.  HELP!  Computer keeps freezing and crashing.

About a month ago, the "beach ball" appeared on my screan.  I rebooted the computer only to a blue screen.  Was instructed to Safe Boot and repair my files.  I got the computer to let me in.  My only problem now is, when i open the mac, my hard drive does not make the wake up noise?  Im not so computer savey so im not sure what im experiencing.  My mac also sees the "beach ball" on occasion followed by it freezing and me having to hard reboot it.  What am i experienceing?!  Also when computer is booting up, a black screen with white lettering jimbo-jamble appears for a solid 30 seconds to a minute.  I am worrying because my macbook was bought refurbished about a year ago, never had ANY problems, and JUST LIKE THAT...i got a world of issues.

  • Was Stuck at Loading Screen, tried support guide, new problem now

Hello everyone. I'm in a bit of trouble with my macbook. Recently it has been running slow and just yesterday when starting the macbook up, it was stuck at the loading screen. I have tried doing a reinstall, but got a failed to install after it ended. I followed the guide that the apple support provided (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570), but now I have ran into a new problem. Now when I resorted to erasing everything for sure, my macbook cannot detect a drive to install in. When I went into Disk Utility, it was unable to show the drive that had all my data in it. In addition, I was unable to create a partition or erase any data via disk utility. I am really confused on what to do now and really need help. My last option for sure would be to take the macbook to an apple genius representative at an apple store to see what they can do, but if I could resolve this issue and do a clean reinstall that would be great. Thank you for your time. Hope I can get this fixed.

You should run an Apple Hardware Test http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 by pressing "D" at startup to check if Hardware.
Also try starting your computer on Target Disk Mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 if you have another computer you can connect with firewire. This helps to partition almost all the time with no problems.
    Hope it helps

  • Frozen on "setup is starting windows" blue screen tried everything...

Hi, I have tried the bootcamp section but no reply so far. My situation is this - I have an intel imac running 10.4.9, boot camp/XP SP2... everything was running fine. I went away for a week... to my knowledge no one used my computer. I came back and ran os x, everything was fine... I rebooted into windows, black screen, no sign of windows at all... only the standard detection of hardware etc as usual but no windows. Rebooted, same again. Repeat 10 times, same every time. Tried safe mode, everything... never got any further. Booted into os x, fine... tried again in windows... nothing. Decided to format, removed the windows partition, started boot camp process from scratch... got up to the "setup is starting windows" part (after all files have been loaded from the xp cd to prepare for setup) - froze. Rebooted, tried again - froze at same point. Left it for an hour... no change. Have tried formatting completely, zeroing over entire HD, burned multiple fresh copies of windows... re-slipstreamed... never gets any further. Hardware testing using os x cd comes up clean...i have latest firmware... latest security upgrade from apple...tried with all peripherals unplugged... same same same.
At this point I'm thinking something to do with firmware maybe...since that is the only thing I have been unable to change. Im stumped. Have looked all over the discussion pages and none of the solutions people have been given have worked for me.
Any help would be so very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    SOLVED
Well, I'd like to thank all of you for your input. After much prayer and extensive search, I was finally able to install Windows XP SP3 on the new iMac. I kept the 32GB partition created by Boot Camp 2.0, but I did 2 things differently when trying to do it this time. The apple keyboard (since it is so short, really Apple, you had a usable length with the Pro models 10 years ago) was connected to a 6 foot USB extension cable to reach the back of the monitor. This is because the iMac is on a computer desk with a pull-out desk to place the keyboard and mouse. But I disconnected the extension, and plugged it direct this time. I didn't leave the Windows XP SP3 disc in this time, I just restarted, and while it restarted I pressed and held the OPTION key. An icon of just the "Macintosh HD" came up on the screen, at which time I inserted the Windows CD, a few seconds later, an icon for the CD appeared to the right of the Mac HD icon. I selected the CD, and again it went through loading drivers getting ready for windows setup, same as before. I cried out to the Lord, and YESSSSSSSSS, it finally asked me if I wanted to format a windows partition! Needless to say, it went through the entire process fine.
I didn't need to update to Boot Camp 2.1, sp3 is working fine. Installed and ran a few programs, connected to the internet, and so forth. Although I left the network connection to the internet disabled, don't want to use the Windows side for the net, too many virus problems possible.
I shut down the computer, re-connected the USB extension cable, and when I went into the Windows side, guess what? The mouse and keyboard locked up completely. I connected the apple keyboard direct again, and then I had control again. Using the USB extension cable on the Windows side is the only problem, because the Mac side works fine with it. This will be a new post because I really need the extra length because of the distance. But thanks to all.
    In God's Harmony,
    RODDY
