Upgrade 10gR1 RAC to 10gR2 RAC

After reading the install / upgrade documentation I'm unclear about what will happen with my existing CRS and Database homes. When performing the upgrade from 10gR1 to 10gR2 what will happen to my existing Oracle homes.
1. When upgrading my CRS/ Cluster Ware home will the upgrade require me to define a new CRS home, or will it upgrade my existing CRS / Cluster Ware home.
2. Will I be upgrading my existing database home, or will I need to define a new database home?
I have no need to keep my existing homes to run two different versions of the database, and would prefer not to create new homes for either CRS or the database.
Rob

Hello,
If you want to upgrade you MUST use the same CRS_HOME, you can not have install CRS in a different CRS_HOME.
Also make sure you always upgrade/migrate your CRS stack first, after that ASM if using and then the RDBMS.
The upgrade process of CRS is not that hard. For patchset apply it is very nice, a seperated preinstall directory is cerated and after the install and when you start to execute the root.sh script it will start to apply the patchset.
Then it is even possible to have one node a on a lower CRS level then the other. After upgrade the second not the CRS stack notice the same release and switch to the latest release.
Hope this helps explain is a few lines how to upgrade.
Good luck.

In this environment i am using OCFS file system not asm . please send me step to configure.

In other terms its called patchset application into your database home. Go to this note, assuming its linux, and do all steps until step 9 which is database upgrade.

  • DR type restore of 10gR1 RAC with ASM database to another cluster

    Hi,
We have a requirement to restore the image copy of our production database to another location. The production database is a 10-node 10gR1 RAC deployment with ASM. The image copy is in the FRA.
We want to restore this image copy onto a 2-node 10gR1 RAC cluster, which is also running a development environment. We have so far used the 'backup copy copy of database' command to pipe the image copy from the FRA to an NFS mounted filesystem. We plan to restore (and convert the names) the files from here. I have a list of steps we need to undertake - like adding the production database metadata on the development cluster into CRS, restore the spfile and controlfile, restore and convert the datafiles from the production ASM diskgroup to the development ASM diskgroup.
has anyone out there done this? Are there any nasty 'gotchas' or pitfalls?
Please, tell me your pain so I can spare it myself :o)
    regards

We are planning to take cold backup through RMAN. But now the issue is that if something going wrong with the storage then both the diskgroup on the same storage will not be mounted.
What should be the backup & recovery strategy for this scenario? How to bring the server back online? The strategy depends entirely on the risk analysis and assessment. Do you need to be able to recover the database to the moment just before it crashed? Do you need point-in-time recovery? What are the availability requirements? Etc.
Databases can be quite diverse in nature. It can be fairly static with very few changes, to very dynamic to totally dynamic. In some cases, the database only needs to be restored as a "container" (structures with no data) as that is all the processes need and as these will supply the data. In other cases, the entire database with all committed transactions to the second before the crash is needed. In a few cases, you may want to use Data Guard and standby/clone databases instead.
There is no single set of rman instructions that you can copy-and-paste to implement any of these diverse backup and recovery strategies. You need to determine and define your backup, restore and availability requirement first - before looking at which rman commands to use and in what sequence, where and when.

  • OS upgradation For RAC

    Hi guys...How is everything.....
I have Node RAC on Windows2003R2 Itaniam. I Need to know is there any procedure for OS upgradation for RAC..I mean shall I down the Cluster & Database when OS up gradation..

    Hi JIC,
Please be more specific. Do you plan upgrade OS for Win2008? Or did you means service packs and patches through windows update?
In general, if your OS is certified by Oracle to run RAC if you are using service pack 1,2,3 doesn't matter, they are certified too.
"The Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Real Application Clusters both support rolling upgrades of the OS software when the version of the Oracle Database is certified on both releases of the OS (and the OS is the same, no Linux and Windows or AIX and Solaris, or 32 and 64 bit etc.). This can apply a patch to the operating system, a patchset (such as EL4u4 to EL4u6) or a release (EL4 to EL5). Stay within a 24 hours of upgrade window and fully test this path as it's not possible for Oracle to test all these different paths and combinations."
This rule is valid to Unix/Linux and windows Systems.
You can check it on My Oracle Support note ID 220970.1

  • R12 upgrade on RAC env

    Hi,
Planning to do major upgrade from R11i to R12.1.3 , can we do major upgrade on already RAC enabled database or is it preffered to run upgrade on a single instance.
Anyone has experience doing upgrade on RAC if so can you share your findings
    Thanks

We just did a pilot and found lot of cluster wait when the Maintenance patch was doing updates on same table, we had 32 workers running and saw the waits when 32 workers was running same job in parallel as part of R12 MPCan you reproduce the issue with other patches? Or it is just specific to the maintenance pack patch
Did you made any parameter changes to work specific for RAC env if so can you shareNo.
For similar issues, I would suggest you log a SR.
    Thanks,

  • Rolling Upgrades in Rac

    Hi All,
can you please explain abt rolling upgrades in rac env
suppose i am having rac setup on 10.2.0.1 if i want to apply patch set 10.2.0.4 is it required downtime
As per the readme of 10.2.0.4
1)Stop every thing on node 1 and apply patch set
2)stop every thing on node 2 and apply patch set
3)stop the database and run the catupgrd.sql script.
My question is for running catupgrd script i have to bring down the db so what the meaning of rolling upgrade??
And in this type of sece which type of upgrade is best one rolling or non-rolling.

    Hi HTH
Thank you for clearing my doubts regarding Rolling upgrades and i have gone though the link and i have noticed the following steps
    For Standalone system
    1) Install Oracle 10g to a separate Oracle Home on the same server
    2) Create a 10g database with only the base tablespaces: SYSTEM, SYSAUX, UNDO, and TEMP
    3) On the 9i database, put all your tablespaces into read only mode (write downtime begins)
    4) Perform a transportable tablespace export of all non-system tablespaces (as a sysdba user)
    5) Shut down the 9i database (true downtime begins)
    6) Start up the 10g database
    7) Perform a transportable tablespace import into the 10g database (end true downtime)
    8) Make all your tablespaces read/write (end write downtime)
The above steps is going to work only for 9i to 10g or can we use it to any version to version.
BY using TTS is it suggestable method to do the upgrade??

  • XML queries in ORACLE 10gR1 vs ORACLE 10gR2

    Hi
in the research project where I'm involved in, we have two databases. One is the test database, upgraded recently in ORACLE 10gR2 and the production database in ORACLE 10gR1.
We have the same table with the same data in both test and production database.
I can run successfully the query and get result in test db ORACLE 10gR2:
    SELECT XMLQuery('declare namespace
    mpeg7="urn:mpeg:mpeg7:schema:2001";for $i in /mpeg7:Mpeg7
return $i' PASSING xmlcolumn RETURNING CONTENT) FROM
    XMLTable WHERE existsNode(xmlcolumn,
    '//@id="2005"',
    'xmlns="urn:mpeg:mpeg7:schema:2001"') = 1;
but if I try the same query in production db ORACLE 10gR1, I get the error
return $i' PASSING xml_column RETURNING CONTENT) FROM
    FEHLER in Zeile 3:
    ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
Is there any difference in the queries syntax between R1 and R2?
What should I change in my query?
Please help. I’m really facing with some problems with XML storage and retrieve.
Any kind of help will be appreciable
    Best regards,
    Evanela

    Hi Evanela,
XQuery is available from 10gR2 and higher - the XQuery functionality
is just not available in 10gR1 ...
    Does this help ...?

  • Do i need to install 10gr1 before installing 10gr2

My assumption was that i don't need to install 10gr1 before installing 10gr2, but when i downloaded "10g Release 2 (10.2) for AIX 5L Based Systems (64-Bit)" from otn website, Its size was only 1.2GB and after i unzip and did cpio command, It only extracted "Disk1"
    thanks.

As of Oracle10g, they have reorganizsed their install and disk layout.
The database code and minimum configuration is installed only from disk 1, options and extensions are on the Companion CD and Client things including the 10g version of 9i Java OEM console are on the Client CD. Each is separate.

  • DB upgrade fom 9i to 10gR2

Do we need to know if failover and loadbalancing is implemented to plan for DB upgrade from 9i to 10gR2? If so why?

    Hi,
Issues when upgrading from Oracle 9i :
    1. Hash Group by aggregation which allows a hash algorithm to process group by statements. You have to use for sorts ORDER BY.
    2. 10g CBO has been added costed subquery unnesting and view merging functionality.
    a. Symptoms might range from high parse times to wrong results
3.The CONNECT Role has been changed since 10g R2
    4. Parse times may increase after upgrade/migration
    Hope it helps....

  • Excessive log switching after upgrading to RAC + DG

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this should go in the RAC or the Data Guard section, seeing how I'm not sure which one is the potential culprit, but here goes:
I recently assisted in upgrading a database from Solaris 9i to HP-UX 10gR2 (10.2.0.4) using RAC and Data Guard (2 nodes). However after upgrading we noticed that there is now an increase in the redo log switches. We currently have 4 logfile groups for each thread sized at 100MB. Previously when the database was just a single instance, such a configuration was sufficient as we were only seeing 4 log switches per hour, max 8 at peak times. After the migration, this spiked up to around 40-60 log switches per hour, sometimes hitting 80.
The userbase/load of the database hasn't changed since the upgrade, we just migrated the database. Is this normal? Should I have to increase the redo logs after migrating to RAC + DG? I've implemented DG before as well as RAC, but not together so I'm not sure if this would be a factor, however I'm not totally sure if that line of thinking is correct. Any help would be much appreciated.

Previously when the database was just a single instance, such a configuration was sufficient as we were only seeing 4 log switches per hour, max 8 at peak times. After the migration, this spiked up to around 40-60 log switches per hour, sometimes hitting 80. Are all the ArchiveLogs actually 100MB each ? If Oracle has to switch logs more frequently, it doesn't necessarily mean that more Redo is being generated. Check the volum of Redo. (e.g. from v$sysstat, from StatsPack, from AWR, from V$ARCHIVED_LOG or by just listing the ArchiveLog file sizes)

2.and also is CRS perferred over HACMP?

    user10394804 wrote:
1.Can someone share their experience with Oracle 11i RAC with ASM and its performance?Performance of RAC is ok, if you plan your concurrent processing carefully (in case you will have PCP in place): Try to avoid different instances of the database manipulating the same datablocks. This is disastrous for performance.
ASM, performance wise, is theoretically the best option for any Oracle Database, because the I/O subsystem has been tuned to Oracle Database needs. This means, for example, the Caching mechanism is tuned to Oracle. Any other file system has to find the golden mean for there are millions of applications using the file system.
2.and also is CRS perferred over HACMP?You would need RSCT in order to be able to install a shared file system like GPFS. In such a case HACMP is not required at all. If you are going to create the database on raw devices (concurrent) with volume groups it is necessary to have HACMP in place to provide for the concurrent storage groups.
You can register with http://www.oracleracsig.org and you can find the Oracle 10gR2 RAC Cookbook there. Alternative link can be found here, don't know whether this is the latest version, but still:

There are so many brands of hardware loadbalancers available. Take Cisco. They have never let me down when implementing hardware loadbalancing. See Metalink note 217368.1 - Advanced Configurations and Topologies for Enterprise Deployments of E-Business Suite 11i for information on loadbalancing techniques and referral to other sources.
