Upgrade 2008 r2 domain to 2012 r2 and ADFS/DirSync implications

Hi,
I would like to upgrade our 2008 r2 fully functional level domain to 2012 r2 fully functional. We use DirSync and ADFS for o365 in our Exchange Hybrid environment.
Is there any implications with doing this? Will I need to upgrade my ADFS proxies and ADFS servers to 2012 r2 as well?
Best wishes
Michael

Hi Michael,
Based on my research, ADFS does not require schema changes or functional-level modifications to operate successfully, therefore, the upgrade process shouldn’t affect ADFS function.
Here are some references below for you:

  • SharePoint 2013 Server OS upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2

Is it possible to have SharePoint 2013 farm to have mixed version of OS (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2).
We have a request to upgrade our farm servers from WIN 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2. We have 5 servers in farm -
2 App servers - running with Central Admin, Service Applications, User Profile
3 Web Front End Servers- running web application, search and workflow manager
the database layer is separate on sql 2012 R2
We want to upgrade OS from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2 and SQL to SQL 2014.
What will be right approach to do OS upgrade in above scenario to minimize the impact of downtime.
May be add windows 2012 based servers in farm one by one and replace the windows 2008 R2 based servers from server.
    Regards,
    Kunal Abrol

Its possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.  The problem is that you can only install SharePoint 20103 on Windows Server 2012 r2 using the slipstreamed SP1 version.  I assume that you used the regular version to install on you Server 2008 r2 versions.
Even if you upgrade those servers to SP1 there are some minor differences in the builds between slipstreamed SP1 and upgraded SP1.  So although it will work it isn't recommended.
Also, you should be aware the upgrade of inplace SharePoint servers running Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2012 r2 is not supported.
To upgrade to server 2012 you'll need to add 2012 servers to your environment using the slipstreamed version os SharePoint and then remove the old server 2008 r2 servers as soon as possible.  For the period of the upgrade you should be able to get away
with running the farm in a mixed state.

  • Sharing Weblogic instance with Forms and ADF apps

We have both Oracle Forms and ADF (10.1.3.4) apps that we are planning to deploy to Weblogic. We are looking for the best approach for the architecture. Our user base is small (30-50 users) and the concurrent demand will be low as well.
    Options we are considering are:
    1. Two separate Weblogic servers, one for Forms and one for ADF
    2. One WL server with 2 domains, one for Forms and one for ADF
    3. One WL server and 1 domain serving both Forms and ADF. We'd probably create the domain for Forms initially then deploy the ADF apps to it as well as the ADF runtime libraries.
Are there any tips as to what we should consider in making our decision?

    1. Two separate Weblogic servers, one for Forms and one for ADF
this will actually segregate the applications.. both application will work independently.. still have to consider about the memory leaks as running two separate servers will take lot of resources.. no common library files access..2. One WL server with 2 domains, one for Forms and one for ADF
rather good approach..works well.. still each will work independently.. no common library dependencies..3. One WL server and 1 domain serving both Forms and ADF. We'd probably create the domain for Forms initially then deploy the ADF apps to it as well as the ADF runtime libraries.
both application can refer to common libraries..

  • Upgrade Server 2008 Enterprise Domain Controller to Server 2012 Standard?

    Hey there,
We are going to be attempting to upgrade several of our Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers in our satellite offices from Windows Server 2008 Enterprise to Server 2012 Standard.  I know the inplace upgrade will work (tried it on a member server)
but are there any caveats being that they are Domain Controllers?  Contacted Microsoft and they said we shouldn't have any issues upgrading, and there is nothing special that has to be done in preparation.  (I thought for sure we would have to DCPromo
down before and dcpromo up after the upgrade, but not so much, according to MS)  But I figured I would check and see if anyone has done this successfully.  I should mention that we already have 2, Windows Server 2012 Domain Controllers in our environment,
and one of them has the FSMO roles.  Thanks in advance!

It should work with no problems. My favorite options remains always to demote the DC, re-install it completely and then promoting it again: This is just my own way to work as it makes me sure that I start with a clean base with the fresh install.

  • Upgrade from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 and Quorum

    Dear Sir.
    I am going to upgrade hyper-v cluster of 4 nodes 2008 r2 to windows 2012 hyper-v cluster.
i am going to evict tow node and build new cluster.
should I configure new quorum for new cluster or can i use the the quorum from old system ?

    Hi,
Base on my experience, you need create a new cluster when you choose migrate the cluster, so you need the new witness disk.

  • Upgrade Guest OS to Windows Server 2012 R2 and use VHD from 2008 R2

I have a WS 2008R2 virtual machine (Host WS 2012R2) with two vhd/vhdx (Drive C: and D:). I want to upgrade this Guest OS to 2012 R2 by installing a new VM. Is it possible to create the new VM and just attach the Drive D: vhd/vhdx formatted on old 2008R2?
What about NTFS issues? Will I be able to use 2012 R2 new features like deduplication on this Drive D:?
    Thanks.

  • Promote 2012 R2 in a 2008 R2 domain

My shop is all 2008 R2 domain controllers and all workstations are win7 x64 so my question is simple I want to promote a 2012 R2 server to a DC (later this year we are buying win 8.1 workstations and thought that a 2012 R2 DC would make sense) has anyone
ran into any gotchas or issues by doing this?
    MSB

Tim is correct. You can add 2012 R2 DCs to a 2008 R2 domain, they will simply run at the lower functional level. My question would be is this necessary? There is no reason to upgrade the domain in order to support the new clients. The biggest concern I can
think of is the new Group Policy administrative templates for Win 8.1, but those are easily added to the central store in the domain by copying them from the new clients.
My general thinking about upgrading the domain is that it should only be done if there is an express need at the domain level. As Tim mentioned, some applications may not function at a higher level. Upgrading a client OS is not a reason to upgrade the domain.

Lets say you have two domains - Domain 1 and Domain 2. Both have W2008 DCs. SCCM 2012 has been deployed to Domain 1.
You could just upgrade to W2012 DCs in Domain 1, then migrate Domain 2 resources to Domain 1.In this way SCCM is unaffected.

  • Upgrade of Integation Services (Windows 2012 R2) on Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG fails

    Here is the scenario:
    Legacy Host: Windows 2008 R2
Guest VM: Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG cluster.
After importing the VM (2008 R2 and Exchange 2013 DAG) into a 2012 R2 host (Cluster).  (copy VM files to new 2012 R2host) Everything works fine.
Then upgrading "Installation Services" (for Windows 2012 R2 host) on the imported VM runs fine with no errors to the "Restart" prompt. VM than shows: "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn
of your computer." Hangs there for about 20 minutes until is says "shutting down". Hangs there for 20 minutes until power off. Restart to normal start; "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turnoff your computer." proceeds slowly
to "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." hangs there again indefinite. Sometime hangs at shutdown cycle and "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." indefinitely.
I moved 20 other machines from a 2008 R2 host to new Windows 2012 R2 hosts all of these machines install the 2012 R2 Integration services just fine on the 2008 R2 VM. Just the 2008 R2 VMs clustered (DAG) and Exchange 2013 SP1 do not take the Integration
    Services upgrade.
Any advise from Microsoft? I know I could decommission the DAG and Exchange machines and install Integration services on the native box before Exchange and DAG and that would sure work, but I'd rather avoid that amount of work for a simple integration layer
    upgrade.
    Thanks

  • Upgrading SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012 SP1

    Hi everyone,
We are testing some upgrades in a lab environment. We have upgraded to SCCM 2012 R2 and are now looking at upgrading to SQL 2012 SP1 from SQL 2008 R2. Both SCCM and SQL are on one server. (The next step is to split SCCM and SQL but that's another topic)
The question we are asking is, what should be our process for the upgrade? Do we need to stop SCCM services before doing the SQL upgrade? If, so, which ones?

    Hi,
You need to stop all Configuration Manager services at the site.
For the process of the upgrade, you could check the following document.

I compared the registry with a working system but the Counters - and all other keys - looked fine.
At the same time as upgrading a DC a colleague was updating an unrelated server, and he started to see similar events in the event log (but for the Dell OpenManage Essentials service, not ADWS). The error was complaining about KERNELBASE.dll which set my
spider sense tingling. We knew that this server had Windows Updates pending. Fully updating it solved the problem on that server.
I solved the ADWS problem in the end by fully Windows Updating the DC. In particular, the ADWS Service started successfully after installing KB2919355 and rebooting. That also
'unlocked' a further 59 updates pending.
After the in-place upgrade I always fully Windows Update but I'm 99% certain that KB2919355 did NOT show up when I did a Check for Updates straight after a reboot so I thought the DC was up-to-date. I then spent hours investigating the ADWS problem and rebooted
as part of the diagnostics. It was then that I noticed on the logon screen that there were updates pending...
Moral of the story? Windows Update, then Update again, and again, and again. The length of time it takes to Windows Update after an upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012R2 is painful though.

  • Upgrade FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 Databases from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my SQL from 2008 R2 to SQL 2012.
    FIM Databases
    1) FIMService Database
    2) FIMSynchronizationService Database
Mentioned above are my FIM databases running on SQL server 2008 R2 . Now I was looking for some article which could tell me if SQL can be upgraded without affecting my existing databases of FIM or if i can move these databases to a new server having SQL
    2012
Activity I want to perform :  Create a fresh  Server of SQL 2012 and move my FIM 2010 databases over it by restoring the backups. but as per the link below it seems not possible!
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.fimilm-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspx

    Hi Shivam,
Please take a look here: Release Notes for Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 SP1.
In the table you have tasks to upgrade SQL for FIMService and FIMSych.
    FIM Service:
Upgrade FIM Service servers to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
Stop FIM Service on all servers
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
Start FIM Service on all servers
    FIM Synch:
Upgrade FIM Sync to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
    Stop FIM Sync
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
    Start FIM Sync
If you are not making in-place upgrade, I would do something like here:
    Stop FIM Services
Backup the databases at SQL 2008
Restore backed up databases on SQL 2012
Make sure SQL Agent Jobs are moved (FIMService)
Make sure Broker is enabled on FIMService database
On FIM machines create SQL alias using cliconfg utility. Alias should have the name of "old(sql2008) SQL" and point to new name/instance.
Start FIM Services - they would use "old" name to connect, but it would be translated to new location. So they would start.

I am suggesting you to fresh install OS and SCVMM 2012 R2 in different server. Once you install and configured SCVMM 2012 R2 then disconnect One by one Hyper-V servers from SCVMM2008
    and add in SCVMM2012 R2.
For testing purpose disconnect non critical Hyper-V server and added to SCVMM 2012 R2.

  • Inplace Upgrade - 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 (with DataProtection Manager installed)

    Hello all,
    I have a simple question.
I have a main file server, that is running on Server 2012 R2 operating system with Deduplication feature switched On, on the main share disk.
This file server is supposed to be backed up by Data Protection Manager we have up and running, but there is a problem described here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/2e50b0ef-fa1c-4654-9186-fef4b6b2d61d/dpm-2012-sp1-windows-server-2012-and-deduplication?forum=dpmfilebackup
My question is: Can I execute an in-place upgrade or do I have to reinstall the server?
    The IT guys from LukOIL

    Hi,
In-place upgrade of the operating system on a server running DPM isn’t supported. You could backup the DPM database, then perform the Windows 2012 R2 upgrade or new installation on the same machine. After that, restore the DPM database on the Windows 2012 R2.
