Upgrade 250Gb HHD to 500Gb results in pinwheel on everything I try to do.
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Original HHD is 250GB. I used SuperDuper! to make a copy of the original 250GB to a WD 500GB. When I install the 500GB in the MacBook Pro connected to the SATA controller, I get pinwheels every time I click on anything, Safari, Firefox, Activity Monitor, iTunes, iPhoto, Terminal, etc. I did this with three WD 500GB drives, two 7200rpm models and one 5400rpm model. None works correctly. The orignal 250GB works peerfectly, no pinwheels constantly appearing.
The three WD 500GB, seem to work correctly while still connected as a USB drive. Something is not correct.
Summary-
250GB - original - works perfectly
500GB - 7200 rpm - works ok connected to USB, pinwheels when connected to SATA bus.
500GB - 5400 rpm - works ok connected to USB, pinwheels when connected to SATA bus.
What is going on? What do I check and how? How do I fix this? I need more space.
<<The format has always been Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in all attempts.>>
This is the Volume scheme of the drive, not the underlying partition map formatting. Yes, its a bit confusing.
Disk Utlity perhaps couldve been designed so that this is much more obvious.
Make sure you have the underlying partition map formatting as GUID (by the way this is the formatting for ALL Windows 7 and Snow Leopard drives). Its not just a Mac thing as you can see....
1. launch Disk Utility
2. unlock it if need be
3. click the icon upper left of that app - might say something like "500.xx GB ST9500420AS" if you still had the Seagate in it
4. read the Partition Map Scheme - it should say "GUID Partition Table". If it says something else, that might be the problem.
Now - it probably is GUID, but lets rule this out as a factor in the problem.
If all is well with this check, I would be curious if you try to start from scratch on the new drive, does it allow a successful install of OSX (say you install Snow Leopard to it) ? Does that OS install on that drive then boot that laptop ?
Also, are you using the latest version of SuperDuper (at the time of this writing its version 87) ?
And for - Carbon Copy Cloner is v 3.3.7

I have a 2007 black MacBook and upgraded the HD to 500gb. Now the processor lags. Any suggestions?
Assume you haven't filled up your new hard drive, so it should have plenty of space. You didn't say what you're running when it lags, however, hard to connect new hard drive to causing processor lags. See this FAQ on OS X performance to see what can help.

problem updating to iphoto 9.6 after upgrading to Yoesmite I am getting the following message when I try top date iPhoto This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or canc
"This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." ?
This error message will appear erraneously, if you skipped the update to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1 and went straight from an earlier MacOS X version to Yosemite, without first updating to iPhoto 9.5.1 and associating iPhoto to your AppleID.
Try first to buy iPhoto with your AppleID instead of updating. Delete iPhoto from Applications, but don't empty the Trash, then go to the main page of the App Store and search for iPhoto. If you are lucky, it will show as free and you can buy it directly.
If iPhoto is not showing as free, there is no help but contacting the App Store Support: Ask for a redemption code. You will need to provide a prove of purchase for your mac with iPhoto preinstalled.

I upgraded my old mac to snow lepord and now when i try to play music in my i tunes it says "file can not be located" but it still lists all of my music
Use Spotlight Search (the magnifying glass on the top right-hand corner of your menu bar) to locate your music files. Then point iTunes to those files.

I just upgraded to a 3ti from a rebel xt. When I try to open my RAW images in photoshop elements 5.0 get an error message. I installed the camera raw update 4.2 but that didn't work. Any suggestions.
Hi,
Elements version 5 was made obsolete by Elements 6 back in 2007. The T3i was only released 2-3 years ago. Adobe was up to Elements version 9 or 10 by then. Every camera has its own particular camera raw software, and Adobe has to write an update for the software to work with each new camera's RAW files. And Adobe stops updating the old versions to work with new cameras when the next version of Elements/Lightroom come out.
I had to buy Lightroom 4 only 6 months after I had bought Lightroom 3 when I bought a new camera. The older version would not, and never will, work with the RAW files from my 6D.
You could, I believe, use DPP to convert the RAW files before exporting them into Elements 5, but personally I would just take this as a cue that it is time to get Elements 11. Or Lightroom 5. I personally prefer Lightroom.

I just did the recent upgrade and now I keep getting an error message when I try to open a book on my Kindle app, I have deregistered the app and reloaded and the same thing happens, does anyone know how to fix?
You are seeing the message because the new AirPort Extreme has some specific System Requirements:
http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in Snow Leopard may or may not work correctly with the new Extreme for all functions. As long as things are working OK for now, you can probably leave them "as is" and wait for another Mavericks update to fix some issues before you "upgrade".
If you have an iPhone or iPad, you could use that to administer any settings changes on the new Extreme. -
I have installed the iPhoto Library upgrade, which confirms it was successfully installed, however when ever I try to open iPhoto 11, it refers me back to the bloody library upgrade again, so I can't use iPhoto any more.
Thanks, it worked first time that I double clicked as you suggested.
Why do Apple make it so hard to upgrade some programs? They could make the follow through instructions a lot clearer.
Now I have it open- it works and..................... it does look pretty neat. -
I can't upgrade to Yosemite but I fulfill all requirements. If I try to upgrade to Mavericks I am forwarded to Yosemite again. It is a close loop with no answers. Anybody else is experiencing the same with a MacBook Air 1,1?
A MacBookAir1,1 can’t be upgraded past 10.7.5.

I just purchased the latest iPhoto to update my 7.1.5.I have run the Library upgrade tool 2x, each saying installed successfully. But, each time I try to open iPhoto, I get the msg,"To open this version of iPhoto, the library needs to be prepared"OSX 10.9.3
each saying installed successfully
It looks like you installed the Library Upgrader, but did not run it. It is installed in "Applications > Utilities". Launch this tool and click the "Choose Library" button to direct it to your iPhoto library. -
Why does my iMac suddenly shows the rainbow pinwheel every time I try to type something?
My iMac shows the pinwheel every time I try to type on a website or email. Is there a virus? Looks like someone is remotely messing with my computer.

Seriously, you can't run a Mac with only 85 MB of free hard drive space. It's not quite as bad as KBs, but it's still dismall.
Can you go click on your Hard Drive icon (right hand upper corder of your screen? At the same time as you click, press down the letter " i " key at the same time. You will get a screen with your HD Capacity, Used space, & Available space. Please let us know what your numbers are: -

Upgrading 250GB drives to 750GB drives
We have an XServe RAID that is a few years old. It has 8 drive modules with 250GB drives and 6 blanks. We'd like to upgrade all available slots to 750GB drives.
Can I fill the blanks with 750GB drive modules and fill the existing modules with new 750GB drives and rebuild from there? I have read that I need to update the firmware to recognize the larger capacity. What about the controller module and fiber card. Will it work with the existing pieces or will I need to upgrade those as well?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!
Stephe.

Any advice on types and brands for the drives?
Apple.
Apple doesn't manufacture drives. Last I checked only Seagate makes 750GB PATA drives, everyone else in the business seems to make only SATA drives that size or bigger.
Unfortunately nobody makes 1TB drives that are PATA, so it looks like the current crop of the drives mean the end of the line for the XServe RAID in terms of capacity.
While I have heard of people who've replaced the bundled drives with larger ones, with some success,
the blank drive bays have simple blanking plates - i.e. do not have the electronics required to actually
support a drive.
Apple do not sell empty drive modules (with the electronics, but no drive), which makes it difficult
to expand the array other than by getting drive modules from Apple.
Correct. However, if you upgrade from a system with 14 250GB drives, you have all the mounting hardware you need, you just have to swap the drives in the carriers.
If you just bought new drive modules for Apple for the current blanks, and opted to manually
upgrade the existing drives on your own you'd end up with mixed drives (vendor, models and
firmware) which, at best, will result in degraded performance.
This has not been an issue in the past. After all, when you have a drive failure, you end up often with different drive models and firmware versions, too. E.g. Hitachi discontinued the 250GB drive model that was originally in the XServe RAID, and replaced it with a different 250GB drive in their line up.
You had no choice but to mix models if a single drive failure required swapping drives. (To make matters worse, the new drive, while faster, was a tiny bit smaller, which really caused head aches!)
Even though the drives sourced from Apple are more expensive than you can find similarly-sized
drives elsewhere, you get server-grade drives, burned in, with known/standard firmware, and
vendor support by taking the Apple route.
Sorry, that's FUD without basis. No drive manufacturer will run a special assembly line for "Apple grade" drives. Worse, you buy a drive module from Apple, and you have at best a 1 year warranty. You buy the drives from Hitachi or Seagate directly, you have a three or five year warranty.
If you try to use the manufacturer's warranty on Apple sourced drives, the manufacturers will not honor it, because the drives are OEM drives sold at a big discount to Apple, which means they don't give any warrantee beyond what Apple gives.
In terms of what you get for the money, both in absolute price, and in terms of warranty, is much better if you get bare drives straight from the manufacturer than going with Apple's drives.
Without knowing your business I can't tell you what to do, but for me I can't bear the thought of
telling my clients that I lost their data because I opted to save $100 on a few hard drives.
If you're selling to clients, of course, Apple drives are better: there's more profit in those, because they are not a commodity like bare bones drives, but a brand-name special order item.
(that's not to say that third-party drives are necessarily less reliable than those sourced from
Apple, more that being able to say you had a problem even though you were using vendor
supported and provided parts goes a long way ).
Apple's support in regards to drives that fail after a year is non-existent, except if you get the $999 AppleCare contract, but that means you can buy quite a few replacement drives to cover that, and it's still only 3 years coverage, vs. 5 years for the drives direct from the manufacturer...
Obviously Apple needs to make a profit, and inventory, logistics, etc. for parts are expensive, so you pay in essence for the convenience of getting a module you can just shove into the unit and be done. No need to mess with screwdrivers, etc.

Slow start up and Shut Down since upgrading to Mountain Lion - Etrecheck Result query
Hello, I have recently upgraded my operating system from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion from the app store. My Macbook Pro (early 2010) is now experiencing slow start up times (more than 1 minute) and slow shut down (more than 45 seconds). Programs such as iPhoto and Firefox are now taking a long time to start up too and the multicoloured wheel is appearing a lot.It was always snappy and very quick with Snow Leopard. I have seen that quite a lot of people seem to have had similar issues too.
I have Verified and Repaied my disk, reset SMC, and PRAM numerous times and cleared the system caches, as well as making a new user account and opened in Safe Mode. "Searchlight" has finished indexing. Nothing I've done so far has helped the issue. I have run an Etrecheck and note that a few things have "failed", the results are below. Does anyone know what these items do or how to correct them? These could be the cause of the issue as they are Apple items - e.g. account, ID and @me.com processes.
I did not do a clean/fresh installation of Mountain Lion, but I did verify the Snow Leopard disk before I installed it. I'm thinking perhaps to do a clean install but I'm not sure if this will resolve the "failed" Etrecheck issues or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Upgrading to 7.0.1 resulted in Purchased Music being emptied
Self-explanatory subject. I upgraded to 7.0.1 and as a result appear to have lost all my purchased music. The music does not appear in the library at all.
Now that you have gone back, are you able to purchase from the Store? I have music on my iPod (only) that I cannot download to anywhere, but want to keep. If I install the new version and have to sync my iPod, don't I loose that music? When you went back to the older version, did you regain anything that hadn't transfered with the newer version? Does this make sense? If you have any advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
