just need to know if it is feasible to upgrade a bondi blue 233 mhz from 9.1 to jaguar for my 9 yr old to hook up with school network and run educational software.

It will work just fine if you update the necessary areas first.
The most important, is that you need to get firmware update 1.2 installed:

You have to install that prior to installing any version of OS X. Failure to do so, could result in a system that is totally unusable.

You'll also find updates for the CD-ROM drive and your modem that you should go ahead and update before upgrading.
They are not critical updates. But, they will make things better, and you won't be able to install those updates from OS X.
As for Jaguar, that will run just fine.
Your machine will actually run any version of OS X all the way up to 10.3.9.
You do need to make sure you upgrade the memory and hard drive to meet the minimum requirements of the version of OS X that you choose.
128 MB is fine for OS 10.0 through 10.2.8. But, 256 MB or more would be recommended.
For OS 10.3.x, 256 MB would be minimum.
And, you just need to make sure the hard drive is large enough to hold everything and still have enough room to work.

The kids pulled out my old Bondi Blue G3. I have reinstalled all the original discs and so it is running on 8.5 (not 8.6....I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to upgrade now to 8.6...I'll take suggestions on this issue too, unable to find what I need at apple support). But....
Anyway, some of the kiddie software needs system 9.x So I was going to buy the OS 9 discs on ebay. There is a lot there to chose from. I am not sure exactly what discs I need. Can I just buy a copy of 9.2 and that will work? Anything special I need to know? Simply want to get to the highest 9.xx as possible at least cost.
Other details on this computer: 233 MHz, and 96 Mg RAM.

Also, I would purchase as much RAM as you can afford. OS 9.x uses up a lot of memory. In the meantime I would set Virtual Memory to 97mb.

Where ever you purchase OS 9.x from make sure you purchase a univeral full installer CD. Ask the vendors the color of the CD lable. All universal full install CDs are white w/an orange/golden 9.x on it.
You can purchase a OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 universal installer CD & then go to Apple's download site & download the OS 9.2.2 update. However, personally, I would just stay with OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1. You really do not need OS 9.2.2 which is really a cosmetic OS for OS X.

Prior to doing any of the above I would run a 3rd party utility (DiskWarrior, Techtool Pro or Norton Utilities v5.03) to make sure the system is in tip top shape & then run the utility again after all the installations plus rebuild your desktop.
If you do not have any of the above mentioned utilities, then boot from your system install cd (the one that originally came w/your comp) while holding down the c key & run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder. Have DFA repair any errors it finds.

Upgrading my Bondi Blue iMac from 10.1.5 to 10.2

Hello all,
I have a Rev A Bondi Blue iMac with the following upgrades:
512 mb RAM
333 MHz processor
120 gb HDD (partitioned, the first partition a little less than 8 gb)
Firmware, OSX 10.1.5, and related software are up to date
I've been using it with 10.1.5 for a while now and it works quite well. I've decided to install one of my licenses of Office 2004, so I need to upgrade to 10.2. I bought the upgrade CDs, but have trouble getting them to load. After inserting 10.2 disk 1, I allow it to restart the computer, where I am faced with a gray screen with the Apple in the center. After a few minutes, I am given the following error:
"The installer has quit due to an unexpected error exit code 138"
Anyone know what I can do to resolve this issue and install 10.2? What exactly is "exit code 138"?

Immediately after the computer reads:

Best way to install Panther on Bondi Blue Rev B

The computer is my friend's free Bondi Blue Rev B which is currently running OS 9. I have a retail set of Panther discs and would like to update the OS to Panther for my friend.
The previous owner of the Bondi Blue has requested that her information be completely removed, so I am thinking about doing an Erase and Install.
We have the original system discs, OS 8.5 I believe, what appears to be a copy of an OS 9 disc, and a retail set of Panther discs.
Should I start with the OS 8 discs and then upgrade to Panther? Or should I start out with Panther? I am specifically wondering if I start out with Panther, if I can restore any other bundled software which originally came with the machine.
I gather that no version of iPhoto can be installed on this machine?
My friend will likely just use this computer for email. His other computer is a free iBook G3. Both computers have very elderly hard drives--originals I think--and for this reason I want him to be able to get email on the other computer if the hard drive fails on one of them. My friend is fairly new to computers and to Macs, so for the immediate future his computing needs will mostly be sending and receiving email. I don't think he has any real need for OS 9, but it may be that in the future, he may want to use other applications.
He does have an interest in emailing photos and adding any he receives to his iPhoto library. I assume the iBook will work best for this since it does have iPhoto 2.
Is there an alternate photo application on the Bondi Blue that would allow him to email photos and save any he receives to an iPhoto Library?

When OS X is installed, it will be located in a folder titled System. OS 9 is currently installed in a folder titled System Folder. Both OSs are collocated & will not interfere with each other. You will be able to boot OS 9, boot Panther & run OS 9 applications in classic mode while booted in Panther.

Bondi Blue iMac 266 wont turn on at all.

OK, WELLLLLLL, i know you guys probably see this kind of thing everyday. i looked around the forum through all those "imac wont start" pages and none help. mine seems to be a different problem. ill try to give as much info as possible.
ok, i push the main power button, it chimes, HD spins up, everything seems just fine then click click click, and the whole thing goes off (no it doesnt boot up and monitor is just off, the whole thing goes off). if i remember correctly, the power light never turned green, and if it did it was for a short time. after it does this, pressing the power button does NOTHING, no noise at all.
i have 2 other identical macs so ive done a little experimenting (the other two work flawlessly) first i tried just swapping the computer out (not the board, the whole slide out thing, cdrom, hd logic board and all) that didnt work. while i had it out, i tried the computer part from the problem mac, in the other case (the one i knew worked) it worked, but when i installed some updates and restarted, it wouldnt come back on. it did the same as the other the power button did nothing, no noise whatsoever.
so im confused as ever. seems like both parts are broken haha, the crt part AND the computer.
blah, im gonna fiddle around with it a little more see what i can do.
any ideas??? (ALSO, it says 10.2 but honestly i have no idea what os this imac has, but im pretty sure its 9.1)

ok well just to clarify it a little bit, i just took the board out unhooked it all removed battery memory, etc (not cpu though), put it back in, plugged it back up, hit the power button. it chimes, hard drive spins up, the light is orange the whole time, then right as the light turns solid green i hear a click and the whole thing goes off and wont turn back on. also, i tested the battery and i think its dead. would a dead battery cause all of this????

Need help installing panther to my bondi blue imac g3

I have recenlty acquired a bondi blue imac g3. it has os 9.0 on it but i am trying to install osx 10.3 . i have gotten an unsued copy of 10.3 but when i insert the disks into the disc drive the are unredable by my computer. i have made sure that i have upgraded my hardware to the required levels but still have had no luck. any help here would be greatly apprecieated.

I have several suggestions, with the first involving a check of the iMac's firmware to be sure that the Firmware Update 1.2 has already been run on it, prior to installing OS X. It has been so long since I explored my Panther installer disk, but it may be found on it. The second suggestion I'd make would be to replace the iMac's internal 3.6-volt, ½AA lithium battery. I prefer the Saft batteries over some of the competitor's equivalents. It's 1,200 mAh is as good as you'll find, whereas some others are rated less - 1,000mAh or less. If the computer has been disconnected from electrical power for some time, the battery is likely very weak or dead. A dead battery can cause startup issues, so it's good to eliminate the potential for problems caused by leaving a bad battery in the computer. This web site has a lot of useful info for maintaining/upgrading tray-loading iMacs. The next hardware areas to address before installing Panther would be the amount of internal SDRAM installed and the hard drive's capacity. If you install a larger internal hard drive, you must partition it so that the first partition is about 7.8-7.9 GBs. This first partition that's less than 8 GBs is the required volume for an OS X installation in the tray-loading iMacs.
If the cleaning disk doesn't stop the read problems with the internal optical drive, you have to consider the possibility that it has hardware and/or electronic problems associated with age and usage. With only a USB 1.0 port on that iMac, I wouldn't recommend using an external USB optical drive, primarily because it wouldn't be bootable for the OS X installation. Additionally, the first generation USB has a slow data transfer rate (12 Mbps/sec), that ultimately limits the read speed of the drive. I'd check eBay for a pulled/used 24x CD-ROM drive.

Is there hope an iMac Bondi Blue that won't boot?

I have an original Bondi Blue iMac 233MHz, Rev. A. I upgraded the RAM to 128MB about 2 years ago, and it has been operating on 10.2. It had been working perfectly until last week. When the power button is pressed to start the computer, the startup chime is heard, the power button light changes from amber to green, the gray screen comes up with the black Apple icon, and eventually the little gear-shaped thing starts spinning...and that's as far as it goes. I hear it grinding away from time to time, but it never goes beyond that point. The only way to shut down is to unplug the machine.
I've reset the PRAM, tried starting with extensions disabled, checked the battery, and tried to boot from a start-up disk, but nothing has made any difference. I wouldn't mind if the computer has given up, but there are some things on it that I'd really like to retrieve, and I can't even use it as a target disk with a Firewire. It doesn't have a Firewire port, and it won't start up in Target mode.
Is this the end of the line for Old Blue? Could the 128MB RAM card that I installed be faulty and causing the problem? Any other ideas?

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my question. Yes, I had read that article and done each of the steps recommended, but have had no luck. I'll look into your suggestion of removing the hard drive and trying it a Firewire or USB enclosure. I don't have either one as an external device, so will have to determine first whether or not this would be cost effective.

I have a 1998 bondi blue iMac and I would like to put windows on it help

So about 7 years ago my school was selling all their 1998 bondi blue iMacs for 50 dollars each. We used it for a tiny bit and then we got a better computer. Anyway I don't have enough money to get a laptop and I just got a desk so I set it up in my room as my computer. It has Mac OS so it is pretty good in that sense but it has no hardware like inbuilt wifi just the option. Anyway I want it to be a bit better so I would like to run windows 7 and do some things to speed it up. Is there any way I can keep the programmes I already has on the mac because I already had word and things on the mac so I would like to bring them across. So can you please tell me how to put windows on and speed it up. Also now the fan makes a funny noise, I put the vacuum up to the vent to try and see if that fixed it but it still makes that noise and I am worried of a fire hazard, anybody have any ideas?

I recall that this model did NOT have a fan, so you may be hearing the precursor to its hard drive dying...
I purchased the SONY Supressa USB 1.0 CD-R external burner to use with this Mac.
It burned at 2X, but many times I burned at 1X to reduce the number of "coasters" that it produced!

Connecting an old bondi blue 233 to an existing network

I already have a network set up with an indigo g3 imac wired with an ethernet cable which is currently running on 10.3 and an g4 ibook connected wirelessly running on 10.4.
I have recently acquired an old bondi blue 233 imac and want to connect it wirelessly as it will be located too far away from the dsl router to connect it with an ethernet cable. It's currently running on os 9.2.2 and does not have an airport card. I have heard that it is possible to link it to the network with either a usb wireless adapter, a bridge (whatever that is??!!) or possibly by using another dsl router.
I was hoping someone could explain what the difference is between each method, which one works best and whether any, or all, will be compatible with os 9. I apologise for my ignorance in advance.

Another option that no one has mentioned is using the mains power line.
There's a company called Devolo (German) and they make a collection of ethernet enabled mains plugs. One of my clients has bought a set to connect a PC in a room where the wireless will not reach and it works beautifully.
You plug one into a socket near the router, then connect it to the router with the supplied cat5 cable. Yopu then plug another into a socket near the destination computer and connect it to the computer's ethernet socket with the other cat5 cable they supply. You wait a moment or two while the 2 units synchronise and that's basically it. There's some encryption software supplied too if you want to use it.
The Register news site www.theregister.co.uk tested them out and compared them to a similar product by Zyx???? something. The Devolo ones performed better and were cheaper - but more importantly - outperformed Wireless G data-transfer speeds by a margin.
In a couple of weeks (when I've some spare cash), I'm going to get a pair and try them out for myself.
According to their website - they also do a plug with a built-in wireless access point.

Can't find anywhere to select ethernet connection on Bondi Blue iMac

I have the second version of the Bondi Blue iMac. I am trying to transfer files from this computer to an eMac on a private ethernet network. Ethernet does not show up in the Apple System Profiler or under TCP/IP. I do have an ethernet cable hooked up, but I can't get it working on the iMac.

A plain old ethernet cable won't work. You need a ethernet crossover cable or a ehternet hub or router.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

IMac Bondi Blue flashes folder icon after OS X freeze

I have a problem with one of my iMacs. Just this morning, I used my iMac Bondi Blue with 256 megs of RAM, 20GB HD, and and with OS X Panther 10.3.9 installed. I was copying some files off of a thumbdrive, then all of a sudden, the mouse cursor turned into a "pinwheel" saying that it was busy, but I couldn't click, or open anything. The mouse could move, but it was not doing anything. I waited for about three minutes and turned it off buy unplugging it and plugging it back in. I turned it on, and all I got when I did was the folder icon with the Finder on it switching to a question mark. Any ideas?

Use your OS CD. Boot from it and see if the Disk Utility can find the hard drive.
What you describe is pretty typical of a hard drive failure. The read/write arm seizes up and the drive ist kaput, just like that!
If you can see the drive with the utility, you may need to reinstall the OS (Archive and Install).

OS 10.2.8 on 233MHz tray loading Bondi Blue

I have installed OS10.2.8 on a 233MHz tray loading Bondi Blue and I am wondering if there are things I can do to optimize it. I have a 10GB HD and 256MB of RAM (maximum for this machine I read). Anything else I can do?

Maximum RAM for your machine is 512 with a 256MB module in each of the two slots. The bottom slot requires a low profile module. See here for what I mean...

(standard disclaimer, not affiliated with the above supplier but have ordered RAM from them for my old tray loading iMac with very good customer service, so just your standard happy customer)
Although 512MB or RAM would certainly be an improvement over your current 256MB, 256 is not bad and if I had to choose one thing to update on your machine, I would be focusing on the hard drive first. 10GB is nothing. OS X will need a decent amount of free drive space for cache files, temp files, and general scratch disk area for doing stuff behind the scenes. While it probably doesn't need a lot, 10GB is small enough that your stuff may quickly fill it up, especially if you use iTunes and load in a lot of your CDs, and you may find your system getting bogged down as you start to approach filling 80+% of your drive. Considering how dirty cheap hard drives are now. My old 333MHz machine has an 80GB drive in it and it works great (and that one is still only running OS 9.2.2).
Keep in mind these older tray loading iMacs require drives over 8GB to be partitioned with the first partition under 8GB where OS X is installed. Although if you have OS X on your 10GB drive, you probably already knew that.

Trouble with a Bondi Blue iMac CRT 233

My iMac's HD is a blank 80 GB. Still has the original 24x CDROM drive. The problem is that it will only boot from an OS 9 or higher CD but in order to actually install OS 9, I need to do a firmware update. I've tried using OS 8 and 8.6 CDs and it ignores them. I can't boot from my 2 GB USB drive, although OS 9 mounts it when I connect it (currently it's a mirror of the OS 9 CD), and if I try and swap CDs on the fly, the system hangs.
I've played around with the Open Firmware and there's no help to be had there. Of course, if I copy the OS 9 CD to the HD, OS 9 says I'm not booting from the original media and shuts down. I've reset the PRAM and the NVRAM and I've used reset-all in Open Firmware and I can't make this thing usable!
Does anybody know of a way I can update the ROM without a bootable HD?

Yes on all 3 counts. With the partitions set, I had to format it in my Windows PC then pop it back in the iMac and format again off the OS 9 CD.
What are my options for Netbooting? Can I set up a Virtual Mac server and NetBoot this paperweight?
Or what about copying the CD (or a bare bones version of it) to the HD with the Firmware update ready to go? If I could do that, could you tell me what files go in what folder? All I know for certyain is that some file needs to get written to the active System Folder.
Can I update the firmware right from Open Firmware?
I ask so many questions -- I know. Originally, this thing was running OS 8.6 on a 60 GB drive (all one prtn), but the drive died - refused to spin up.
So, upon seeing it was an ATA drive, I threw in an 80 GB spare I had which I took out of my Windows PC when I upgraded to a new drive in the summer and that's how I ended up with an iMac with no system, which brings us to where I am now.
Confused yet? =)
