Upgrade ATV Gen2 to version 5.0 (4099)- no longer connects to iTunes home sharing

I just upgraded my ATV Gen2 to version 5.0 (4099)- because it was suggested by ATV.    After that, I could not connect to my iTunes for music.  Before my upgrade to the ATV, all worked fine.
With Apple stuff, I feel like I never have a good understanding of why things break.  Here's what I've done so far to see if it would fix the problem:
1) make sure I was up to date on iTunes- I'm at version 10.6.0.40, reboot Windows-> didn't fix it
2) turn off home sharing/ turn back on (both on ATV and computer)-> didn't fix it
3) run trouble shoot network on ATV- is OK- -> didn't fix it
4) deauthorize the Windows computer I have my iTunes on, reauthorize it -> didn't fix it
5) reboot my router and cable modem-> didn't fix it
What else can I try?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks much!

SOLVED!
Here's what happened- look at your firewall logs if you haven't already done so!    See what ports are being blocked that AppleTV needs to do home sharing!
I did not do this initially, because it WAS working fine- the only thing I knew of that changed was the AppleTV upgrade.  However, there was either a "gremlin" or Windows Vista update that changed a firewall setting, or Apple using a new port...or...??...since I DID NOT change any of my firewall settings manually!!!!
So...here was the solution: ensure port is open on the Windows firewall (especially if one of your Windows computer works for the library, and the other does not!- it has nothing to do with the version of Windows, but everything to do with the firewall!).
Here's the article on Apple that helps you understand all ports involved in communication for "Home Sharing":
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463?viewlocale=en_US
Yay for home sharing!  Boo for Windows firewall!    I just wish there were a little better error messages in Apple (like blocked port or can't communicate on port xxxx), instead of having to search all the logs manually.    Yes...I know...network layer doesn't translate easily to the application layer...blah, blah, blah...ick!
Hope this helps someone else!

What I know is that the phone worked perfectly fine until I upgraded the software. I've tried resetting the network settings to no avail. I've shut the phone off, put it in a ziplock baggie and then into the freezer for 15 minutes. This made the wifi work temporarily but then it goes back to being grayed out. The wifi does not work at other wifi sites away from my home as well. Seems like an apple issue to me and would appreciate someone coming up with a fix, apparently I'm not the only one having this problem. Thanks for replying to my query, any ideas?
It's likely a hardware issue.  The iOS will not directly cause this issue.
    Use this article first:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim - http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1559
If that fails to resolve it, then try setting it up as new and testing again.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4137
If the issue remains even after set up as new, it's a hardware problem, not a software problem.  You'll need to contact Apple for you hardware service options.  If within warranty it should be free.  If not, expect to pay $149 USD + tax if it's an iPhone 4, $199 USD + tax if it's an iPhone 4S.

Sorry, I updated another thread I was a part of but didn't update my own thread.....ughhh!
I updated all of my ATV 2's and 3's to the latest firmware when it was released and have been problem free since. I do believe the major issue of not being able to connect after a period of inactivity has been corrected with the latest ATV firmware.
I can look at my network connection table using "netstat -an" in a CMD window and I do not see the massive number of connections I saw before the update.
Here is a link to the other thread I was referring to above:

Have you applied the latest firmware updates to your ATV 3's?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year. Then see if you can connect to the store.

  • My iPod touch version 1.1.5 won't connect to iTunes store but supposedly my software is up to date. can anyone offer advice

My ipod touch version 1.1.5 will not connect to itunes store but supposedly my software is up to dat and I tried changing date and time and no success, does anyone have any suggestions?

If you really have iOS 1.1.5 you have an 1G (original iPod touch). You need at least iOS 2 for the App Store. The last update for the 1G is 3.1.3 that you get here:
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
    https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
    If necessary

  • Can't find Apple TV Sync Menu; No ATV in iTunes, Home Sharing works

OK,  I'm about to give up...  My computer shows up in Apple TV (2nd Gen) in the ATV home sharing computer list but I am unable to find any reference to a sync menu or any options to force the sync to occur.   I find references here in the support community to ATV showing up in iTunes.   I can't find that anywhere.   My firewall is off.  I am using a Time Machine as my wireless router.
I've seen screen shots of a tabbed window explaining how to set up "sync" but I've never seen that window before.   (see this link
http://web.mac.com/gartside1104/ATV/SyncvStream.html  ).   Is this an ATV1 / ATV2 / iTunes / Windows only feature?.   I'm running OS 10.6.8 with latest updates, latest version of iTunes.  Just updated the Apple TV software.    I never see more than one library from my network at a time in ATV.  I can directly connect to any computer to share via home sharing but I can't select a library to stream from in ATV (ATV1 feature only?)   I can stream to the ATV from any network computer's shared iTunes library.
Just baffled here...     Lots of hints but no answers.
My primary purpose was to limit the playlists in iTunes that will show up in ATV.   The iTunes preferences for sharing on my local network successfully limit my sharing to specific playlists to other computers on the network, but ATV provides access to ALL playlists.  Does home sharing use a different playlist selector than network sharing?
I set out to drain the swamp but am just wrestling with alligators.

My computer shows up in Apple TV (2nd Gen) in the ATV home sharing computer list but I am unable to find any reference to a sync menu or any options to force the sync to occur.
The Apple TV2 doesn't sync, it's a streaming only device.
I find references here in the support community to ATV showing up in iTunes.
Only the Apple TV 1 shows up under the Devices list in iTunes.
I've seen screen shots of a tabbed window explaining how to set up "sync" but I've never seen that window before.   (see this link
    http://web.mac.com/gartside1104/ATV/SyncvStream.html  ).   Is this an ATV1 / ATV2 / iTunes / Windows only feature?.
Yes that's only for the Apple TV 1
I never see more than one library from my network at a time in ATV.
Are you using the same details for homesharing on each computer.
I can directly connect to any computer to share via home sharing but I can't select a library to stream from in ATV (ATV1 feature only?)
Sorry I don't understand that, could you explain please.
I can stream to the ATV from any network computer's shared iTunes library.
    That sounds correct.
but ATV provides access to ALL playlists.
Yes unfortunately their is no way to restrict content that can be seen by the Apple TV2

  • After upgrade to IOS 8.3  iPad Air no longer connects to iTunes

Today I upgraded my Macbook Air to Yosemite 10.3 and my iPad Air to IOS 8.3
After upgrading the iPad I was asked to connect it via cable to iTunes in order to allow for wireless sync.
When plugging the cable in, the iPad starts sending endless alert beeps and the top line of the screen is shaking. On iTunes the error message "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. This device is no longer connected." appears with every alert beep from the iPAD. No matter how often the OK button is pressed, the message appears rightaway again.
I made a full backup of the iPad Air before upgrading to IOS 8.3 but I am very reluctant to reset the iPad as the same error might come up when connecting the iPad after reset to iTunes and then I would not be able to restore it at all.
Does anyone had a similar experience and/or is there any known workaround?
    Many Thanks for any suggestion.
    G.W

Thanks for your further consideration, much apreciated. I tried a different cable, different port and did reboot and soft reset. I also did reset of settings on iPad, just in case.
As  I can with no problems use the same USB cable and USB port with my iPhone to connect to iTunes, the issue must be somewhat with the iPad Air and iTunes on my Macbook Air. I also can connect the iPad with the same USB Cable to iTunes on a different Macbook with no issues.
I think, best is to do a full backup on a different machine and then setting back the iPad to initial state, followed by a restore.
This I can (hopefully successfully) do with iTunes on a different Macbook.
Many thanks for you kind support.

  • Home sharing is not working in apple tv after upgrading apple tv to 4.2.2.  I've had apple tv working just fine for some time now and after upgrading, it stop working and prompts me in Apple tv to turn on home sharing in Itunes.  It's on.

It asks me, in apple tv when I go to my "Library" to turn on home sharing.  It's on.  When I turn it off and back on I can access my itunes stuff fine for a day or two and then it doesn't work again.  I've tried unplugging appletv, reboot the router (att uverse), and then plug in apple tv again and it doesn't help.  it's still give me the message.  the only thing that works, temporarily, is to turn off home sharing and turn it back on.
I'm using itunes version 10.5.0 on windows 7.  can someone help me with this?   I can't run up and down the stairs all the time.  I have bad knees and other conditions that stop me from doing that.  Please help.
    Thanks.
    Jim.

    Hey all,
I've been having similar problems so I put a packet analyzer on the network to see what's really happening. (Apologies in advance if this post is too techno-babbly...)
    Some background:
How do Apple devices find each other over the network?
iTunes with home shaing turned on sends out a message to a special IP address called a multicast (224.0.0.251, in this case.) All your Apple devices listen to this multicast address and respond over that same address. This process applies to iTunes, AppleTV and Apple Remote at least (those are the things I've been testing with.)
How do Apple devices communicate with each other once they're found?
Once they find each other, they establish a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) communication session. This connection is only between two devices. In this case, iTunes and AppleTV or Apple Remote and AppleTV. The TCP session is how data gets transferred between devices.
    The problem:
I captured the protocol traffic between my PC and AppleTV first with the firewall software turned off. In my case, I use Norton 360. What I see is iTunes and AppleTV communicating over the multicast address every 100 seconds. My iTunes usually 'disappears' from AppleTV and the Apple Remotes within about 5 minutes so I left the firewall off for half an hour and everything worked fine. I turned the firewall software back on and then restarted everything. iTunes then did the device discovery and all the devices found each other. Then, after a period of about five minutes of inactivity, the multicast discovery protocol stopped being sent by my PC. Why? I really don't know. From watching the apple protocol's timing, contents and behavior, I see nothing wrong with the implementation. I've done troubleshooting on other location-based multicast protocols for work and have seen some dumb things but Apple's protocol is done correctly and behaves exactly as I would expect.
    The solution:
I put a rule into my firewall software explicitly allowing the multicast IP address and also the local subnet that my devices use. I then moved the new firewall rules to the top of the list to ensure that they will be 'hit' before any of the other rules in the list. After that, I left the firewall on and tested for a while then left everything idle for an hour. When I came back, everything still worked. I would suggest that replacing your firewall software won't necessarily help you here. You just need to make sure that the rules for the Apple stuff are put in manually and are at the very top so that another deny rule in the list doesn't trigger before the new permit rules. Hopefully it goes without saying but doing the above leaves your PC completely wide open on the local network so, if you use wireless, please be sure to use encryption on it.
    Hope that helps...

  • ITunes Home Sharing not loading over VPN after upgrade to 10.10.2

    Hey, all.
For years I have used a VPN to stream my iTunes library from my home computer to my work computer (who wants to bring a drive around with them everywhere?).  It works flawless on 10.8.5... Ever since I upgraded to 10.10.2 on my Mac Mini, this is what happens:
When I first start up iTunes on my local system, I can see the Home Sharing icon.  Then I go and select my remote library....it starts to load as usual....but then after a while it just stops and the home share has disappeared.  I can no longer select it.  I remote into my Mac Mini using LogMeIn, and I shut down iTunes...turn off my VPN....turn it all back on again, and sometimes that fixes it.  Sometimes I have to log out of home sharing, shut down itunes, restart itunes, log back in...and do the same locally...
As you can see...this is absolutely ridiculous.  Normally, I leave iTunes on 24/7 and connect via my VPN whenever and wherever I want to.  Now it's massive P.I.T.A.
Any ideas as to what's going on?  I'm about 5 seconds away from downgrading back to Mountain Lion.
    Thanks!

I have a home network of 2 Mac Minis and a MacBook Pro, in different parts of the house, mainly sharing music. SInce I downloaded the latest version of iTunes on the three computers (between 10th and 12th of June 2013) the three computers iTunes secreens no longer register the other libraries. • ITunes home sharing intermittantly unavailable since upgrading to Mountain Lion

I recently upgraded my iMac from 10.6.x to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and since then I have been having sharing/visibility problems between iTunes and my iPad 3 and iPhone.
I had configured and was using, without any issues, home sharing and wifi sync prior to the OS upgrade but now my devices will be unable to find the iTunes running on my Mac. I found some support thread claiming power saving options were to blame, but I have already disabled HDD and computer sleeping. Only the display is allowed to turn off.
The only solution I have found so far is to power cycle the iPad. After rebooting it will find iTunes again. Seems odd that the only thing I changed was the MacOS and yet I have to power cycle the iPad to resolve the issue. Perhaps this problem is only present with this combination of iTunes / iOS / MacOS.
Has anyone else been seeing this problem or found a solution yet?

  • Itunes- home sharing creates duplicte versions of songs

I have my media folder location set to a network drive. All computers on my network have the same media folder network drive. When using home sharing I noticed that if I import a song not in the library it creates a duplicate version of the song (labeled "..-1") in my itunes media folder in the network drive. I assume that this is so that each computer could play the song at the same time. Its seems annoying and wastes space. Any ideas to diaable this "feature"?

I was having a similar problem and quickly noticed the creation of duplicates, and also found a problem with the Show: Only items not in my library options as well. It seems that it thinks that songs with the same name and artist are the same even if they are different albums (eg. live vs. studio tracks).
But - here is how I initially synced an empty library and playlists... First I choose Music in the home shared library and selected everything and Imported that stuff. That copies all the music. To transfer the playlists I went to the source computer and exported each playlist to a text file. (Secondary click on the playlist and choose Export...)
Then I copied the text files to the computer with the new library and imported each one (File > Library > Import Playlist...) On my mac it had no problem loading the playlist and associating the songs with the new ones in the library. No duplicates, no problems as far as I can tell.
This seems to have worked well for an empty library, but unless they fix the couple issues with the show all and show not in my libarary, this will be a major problem next time I add something to a library and want to sync them.

  • Upgraded to iOS7 on the ipad.  Pages no longer connects to iCloud.

    Quick summary.
Updated my iPad 2 to iOS7 via OTA.  Pages crashes on launch.  I unstalled the app, Reinstalled. Now it launches but my documents in iCloud don't show up.  I turned off iCloud and back on via Settings/Pages.  No change.  Deleted my iCloud account on the iPad and reinstalled.  Nothing.
However, my iPhone 4's Pages on iOS7 works as intended.  Documents can also been seen via my iMac.
    Looking for some feedback.

I received this email this morning, supposedly from the iwork team. The work of scammers or the real deal? Apple, please advise.
    Hello there,
We have heard about your issue from the discussion thread below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5332788?tstart=0
We would like to know if you would be able to provide the following:
    - UserID for account
    - Are you signed into iCloud from all devices with the same UserID?
    - Filenames of documents with issues
    - OS versions for desktop and iOS devices
    - Version of iWork apps
    - Were there recent OS or app upgrades installed?
    - Were both the iOS and OS X apps updated when this occurred?
    - On each device, do you have multiple iCloud accounts setup for Mail, Contacts & Calendars?
    - Under Settings > iCloud - Is Documents & Data set to On?
    - If you go to the website www.icloud.com, are you able to download your documents?
