Upgrade basic phones

Hi all~
We have an old Nationwide plan, 1400 minutes of talk, 3 basic phones 1 smart phone with 2GB of data. I would like to upgrade two of the basic phones but we don't qualify for upgrades until 10/2015.
I don't like the Edge program, we aren't interested in having the latest/greatest and would prefer to purchase a phone upfront at the discounted price. Can we do this since we are upgrading our phone plan?
Thanks

It is really random how they do things. I was EE eligible but I was NOT eligible for the Early Upgrade which would have allowed me to do a 2 year upgrade from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6. That was ok with me as I wanted the LG G3 so I traded in my P.I.T.A. iPhone 5 that gave me some problems and got my G3.
I really think that the OP must contact VZW directly for the specifics of their account as we as other customers cannot advise them fully. We can only speculate about any promotions that may be available to them. I honestly believe these questions should not be asked on a user forum such as this as it could prevent the asker from contacting VZW directly and they could miss any promotions available.

  • Can only upgrade basic phone to basic phone?

I have three lines on a share everything plan.  Two smart phones and one basic phone.   The only line eligible for upgrade is the basic phone line.  So, I went to a local VZW store today not only to pay my bill but to see about upgrading the line with the basic phone.  The rep at the store told me that I could only upgrade a basic phone for a basic phone.  He said that only smart phones can be upgraded to smart phones.  This is just ridiculous.  I chose not to upgrade my phone.  In fact, I now plan to switch to AT&T.

You were told wrong.  The only difference will be a $40 line fee instead of the $30 line fee, and you may consider increasing the data pool if you are adding another smartphone to the mix.  But there is no reason at all why you would HAVE to put a basic phone on that line.  The rep was wrong.

  • Ugggh - Say it isn't so - changed policy on upgrade pricing on smart phones on basic phone line

I had been waiting until my son's basic / dumb phone line was eligible for an upgrade to purchase the iPhone 5.  People had told me if we bought the iPhone 5 on his line and then re-activate his basic phone line then I could use the phone on my line (thereby keeping my unlimited data).  I've also heard people do this and sell the phone on ebay.  Now, a Verizon rep told me that you have to keep the new phone active on the line for 90 days or else they will charge you back for the full price of the phone.  Grrrr -- it seems like they closed this loophole.  Can anyone confirm or deny it with a link to where it says this in the Verizon 'fine print' on the website (I can't seem to find it)?  I'm really disappointed!

It was a corporate store.  I hadn't heard that before which is why I posted the question.  I wondered if Verizon had closed the loophole on getting upgrade pricing and switching the phone to another line to keep the unlimited data.
It may have been a Verizon "authorized reseller" which is NOT a corporate Verizon store - places like the mall kiosks or storefronts that look very "Verizon" may be a reseller.  You need to check the Store locator to be sure which are, in fact, corporate stores.
And for the record, the "loophole" (which really isn't a loophole at all, it's always been available) that allows you to upgrade one line and use the phone on another (upgrade transfer, buddy upgrade, whatever you want to call it) is still in place; there are no 90-day restrictions.  If the store you are dealing with is telling you that you need to keep the phone active on the line for 90-days or face penalties, then it is NOT a Verizon corporate store.

I currently have a basic phone but I would like to switch to a smart phone. I don't have an upgrade right now and none of the other phones on the plan have an upgrade either (4 phones in total, 2 smart phones and 2 basic). Is it possible to get a phone from a 3rd party, instead of buying a phone from Verizon at full price, to switch with the basic phone?

  • Upgrading from a basic phone to a smart phone after 6 months?

Alright, right now on our plan we have two smartphones and one basic phone. We've had the basic phone for about 6 months, and wish to upgrade it to a smartphone. We also would like to switch to Verizon's "Share Everything" plan. Is there a way to do this without paying ridiculous fees to get out of the basic phone's two year contract?
    Cheers,
    Gordon

To expand on what tikibar1 has said, paying the ETF on the basic phone and starting a new line of service would only be helpful if you didn't mind getting a new phone # for the person currently on the basic phone.
However, if this is not a problem, the ETF on a basic phone is MUCH less than the price you would need to pay in order to receive a full retail iPhone.
The ETF on a basic phone is $175 less $5 for each month of your contract you have completed. Since you have had the basic phone for 6 months, your ETF would be $145. A full retail 16 GB iPhone 5(for example purposes only), on the other hand is $649. The discounted price for that same iPhone 5 is $199. So even if you were to pay the ETF and the discounted price on the iPhone 5($145 + $199 = $344) you would still be getting a ~$300 discount on the iPhone 5 from the full retail cost.
Additionally, the chances of being able to find a used iPhone 5(in good condition) for less than that price would be pretty slim.
If you wanted a different model of phone, your costs would of course be different and you would obviously have to weigh your options with those numbers.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading a basic phone to smart phone without 'Share Everything'

I have older Family Share Plan containing basic phones, as well as smart phones (with tiered 2GB/$30 monthly data). When they are eligible for upgrade, will any new smart phones added to the plan be able to receive the same 2GB/$30 data that other phones currently on my plan receive?
The more unreasonable options seem to be requiring every single person on the plan to switch into Share Everything, or booting the person looking to get a smartphone out of the plan. Neither of these are a viable option.
Thanks for any help clearing this up!

The $30 per month is for 2 GB of data, in addition to whatever you are paying per month for voice/text/insurance/taxes, etc.  When you do switch, if you aren't aware of it, do it on the first day of your billing cycle so that you don't run into proration.
And some people are reporting that some Corporate stores try to convince people that they'll save money on the Share Everything plan.  Some will save money, some won't.  Just do your homework, know what plan you want, and read your new contract before signing!

  • Is the basic phone upgrade loophole still usable?

I have a 3 line account, 2 smartphones with unlimited and one basic.  All three are out of contract.  I would like new smartphones but obviously want to keep unlimited.  Is it still possible to use the basic phone line to process the upgrades, then drop that line back to a basic phone and activate the smartphone on the unlimited line? This process would involve doing this twice and a transfer of one upgrade since I want 2 new smartphones.  Has anyone had success lately?

  • Upgraded to 10 GB for our 3 smart phones.  2 basic phones now $20 higher?

We have 3 smart phones and 2 basic phones on our plan.  When we upgraded to 10 GB for the smart phones, the  basic rates went up $20 per phone.  Why?  Basic phones do not use data.

Looks like you'd get the $10 off of the basic phone whether on Edge or not.  You say basic went up by $20 each?  So you were paying $10 per basic line?  Whenever you make a plan change that affects all lines like a package deal, you may give up aspects of your old plan.  Basic phones do use data, or at least the CAN.  Even a single basic phone by itself on More Everything is $20 for the line and $20 for 500 MB of data or $5 for 700 min and pay as you go data.

  • Can I upgrade my basic phone plan to a smartphone plan, if I have my own smartphone(verizon compatible)?

Aloha, can I upgrade my basic phone plan to smartphone plan, if I have my own smartphone(verizon compatible) and not have to sign a 2 year contract or pay for "you did not buy the phone from us" extra fees?
    Thank you mo.

Yes, you can 'bring your own phone' and it shouldn't affect your current calling plan.  You'll need to add a data plan, though, if you're on a Nationwide calling plan, and you may need to adjust the data portion of your plan if you're on a More Everything plan.

  • When transferring my upgrade Vz added Data Bundle to my basic phone

I have Nationwide Family plan with 4 dumb phones and one iPhone where my son pays his $30 per month data.  I transferred my upgrade (LG Octane) so he could buy the new iPhone which all went well except that my bill now shows "2GB Data Bundle with Email" added to my phone for $30.  Makes no sense that I would need that plan with my basic phone.  What's up?

Even though your transferred the upgrade the upgrade counts against your line. Your line gets the contract extension. Technically your line upgraded to a smartphone and Verizon has new policy where you must keep data on a line for 2 years even if you switch that line back to a basic phone. They did this because unlimited data customers who weren't entitled to upgrades were using a loophole and upgrading basic lines to smartphones then swapping phones and cancelling the data and putting the basic phone back on that line in order to get an upgrade they weren't entitled to. Unfortunately people like you get caught in the middle because unlimited data customers were abusing the system. It stinks but you're stuck paying that $30 for the next 2 years.

  • I am eligible for an upgrade on my basic phone that I own. Since there are only a small amount of basic phones, is it possible to own a smart phone but without a data plan?

There are only two basic phone with full keyboard that is available online, but was hoping that it would be possible for me to own a smart phone without needing a data plan.

You can own and use a smartphone on wifi only, without a data plan, but you will not have the capability to use it as a phone on Verizon's network. To activate a smartphone  and have calling (phone) capability, yes, you do need to have a data plan for the smartphone line.  You CAN have a minimal data plan, and use it on wifi primarily - but yoju DO need a data plan.

  • No Optimized web browser support on basic phones after 8/30/13?

Over the weekend I received a very disturbing message on my web browser. of my Samsung Gusto 2. It said that there would be no Optimized  web browser support on basic phones after 8/30/13 and that if I wanted a good web browsing experience that I would have to upgrade to a smartphone. I am on the $50 unilmited talk, text, and web prepay plan  but don'\t want to get stuck paying for a web browser I can't use after that date.A smartphone monthly plan would cost $10-20 more monthly,in addition to spending considerably more to buy a smartphone. I already have a tablet and was told a smartphone was unnecessary. Anybody else get this message? One person in customer service said that it was propaganda and not to believe it. Another person that I called later found the memo but had no further information on it at this time. Aparently Verizon likes to keep their customer service associates in the dark until last minute. No idea if they will alter their price plans in light of this development. I currently have AT&T U-Verse and will move my number to them and switch providers if forced to.They are willing to offer the same plan I currently have with Verizon but will have to buy a new  AT&T GoPhone.  Have had pretty good customer service with them up to now,but they are not open 24/7 for wireless customer service. Any comments?

    Hi Melissa
Right now I am switching  back and forth between the Samsung Gusto 2 and the original Gusto. The reason I am doing this is because the Gusto ,even though it is an older phone, is in much better condition than the newer Gusto2. I want to use the beat-up Gusto2 for work, and  switch to the other phone when I need a more presentable phone. Also have  a Verizon Wireless CDM 7076(somewhere).
Don't know why I am being forced to replace perfectly good phones. And yes,SydneyK, I could use my tablet for data, but it is a little cumbersome to take it out with me,but don't need it for my work . I just took it out for the first time recently to see how well it works on Wi-Fi hotspots(I don't have or want a data plan).Because I am a U-verse customer,I have access to 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. I don't want to pay for something (web access)that I can't use on this phone. If Verizon can't give me cost-effective solutions, then I will be forced to transfer my number to AT&T Wireless as of August 30 for a GoPhone. AT&T wants my business and are wiling to do anything to satisfy me. Haven't had any trouble with Verizon either. Yes,  their customer service is still available 24/7 even thought you will have to wait a while sonetimes. I just hate the thought of having to go through the hassle of transferring my number to another carrier.

  • Urgent help. I have upgraded my phone but every few hours the apple appears and stays for 15 min an hour or more?

Urgent help. I have upgraded my phone but every few hours the apple appears and stays for 15 min an hour or more?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

  • How do I switch from a basic phone to a smart phone on the single line plan?

I currently have a basic phone on a basic phone plan. My contract expired ages ago, so I'm just month to month at the moment. I want to upgrade my phone to an iPhone 5c, and my plan to the single line plan--unlimited talk and text, 1GB of data. However, when I try to place this order online, it defaults automatically to the More Everything plans, which would end up costing me about $20 more than the single line plan for the same amount of data. I can't seem to change it to the single line plan. How on earth do I make the switch? O.o

Go into a Verizon Wireless Corporate Store and do it there.

  • How can i view my home security with a basic phone

I have a basic lg phone thru verizon.  can i set this phone up so i can view my home security while i am away

You can purchase any smartphone to use on wifi if you buy one straight out with no service, but you'd need to go to a site that resells used phones or find a prepaid that requires no service. You could even use a tablet that is wifi-capable.  But that's just using WiFi.  Sounds like you want all over access on mobile data and wifi though. You cannot buy a Walmart phone and use that in lieu of your basic phone on Verizon.  You would have to upgrade to a smartphone and that eligibility would be based on your contract if you have one.
