Upgrade capability and limits for my MacBook...

I have an old MacBook (1,1) with 2 GHz Intel Duo / 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM / OS 10.4.11. What version can I upgrade to (Leopard) in order to use newer iPods and iTunes (10)? Also, where can I purchase the OS disc? Does anyone know if FileMakerPro 6.0v4 works okay with Leopard? Thanks ahead of time...

General requirements for OSX 10.5 Leopard
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
512MB of memory
DVD drive for installation
9GB of available disk space
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple's MobileMe service; fees apply.
General requirements for OSx 10.6 Snow Leopard
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
iTunes 10.5 is compatible with OSx 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard.
OSx 10.6 Snow Leopard can be bought from the Apple Store.
For OSx 10.5 Leopard you have to call Apple since it is no longer avaiable at their store.
I don't know about FileMaker 6 so it might be best to contact their support.

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only two 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,

  • Hello , please tell me whats the price of a screen and casing for a macbook pro 13inch.ty

hello , please tell me whats the price of a screen and casing for a macbook pro 13inch.ty

ds store's opinion will be right in some, but not all cases.
That largely depends on eactly which year and MacBook Pro (e.g., 5,1 ) model you are talking about, as well as whether you are rather "handy" and can do the swap yourself.
On older Macs, used complete screens are available on the secondary from machines that have died. Step-by-step photo-illustrated guides are also available for sources like ifixit.com. [Their motivation for providing these guides for free is that some readers will buy their parts to make the repairs themselves.]
Newer Macs may be valuable enough that having Apple fix them may be cost-effective. A free appointment at the genius Bar (with no obligation to proceed with ANY repairs) can get you a quote to consider.

    ashish35,
No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.
    Sorry and good luck,

  • Internal HD upgrade or external HD for my Macbook Pro (Late 2008)

    Hello,
I am finding the 250gb internal hard drive not enough and want to upgrade to a 500gb/1tb hard drive for my macbook pro (late 2008 edition).
What I am wondering is whether to change the internal hard drive OR buy the fastest possible external hard drive for my mac which I believe is one that works with firewire 800 as my late 2008 macbook pro does not come with USB 3.0.
The external hard drive I have found is £110 and my macbook would be using the Firewire 800 connection:
LaCie Rugged Triple 301984 1TB USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 5400 rpm Portable Hard Disk Drive
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rugged-Triple-301984-Firewire-Portable/dp/B005C2BNJI
I dont necessarily need the portability of a external hard drive. I work with large files (photoshop, illustrator files mainly) and would would be concerned that I would not be able to work directly on the hard drive for this type of work so an internal hard drive may be better/
Can anyone suggest a good, fast, cheap, popular internal hard drive compatible with my computer and whether you would suggest changing the internal HD or buying an external.
I am running Mavericks and the only other change I have made is by upgrading my RAM from 4gb to 8gb. Thanks so much for your help

For both convenience and speed, I'd recommend replacing the internal hard drive.  Your MacBook Pro can handle nearly any internal SATA 2.5" HD on the market, including 7200rpm models. For what it's worth, I'd recommend a Western Digital Black WD7500BPKX or similar or Hitachi HGST 7K1000 although in my experience Hitachi drives run hot and that's the reason I don't use them as internal drives.
FW800 is fine, but then you have an external hard drive to lug around plus the connection is considerably slower than the internal SATA connection used by the internal hard drive.
Note that you will have to either 1) clone your existing drive to the new drive or 2) completely reinstall OSX and all your apps from scratch to the new drive when you replace the internal drive.   If it were me, I'd take the opportunity to reinstall everything from scratch.
btw, I have done this myself on a number of 2008/2009 MacBook Pros and it's not hard at all.  iFixit has tutorials on how to do this.  (Here is a link to the one that I believe is your model.

  • Upgrading RAM and OS System on MacBook.

    Hi,
I am after a bit of advice. I currently have a MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. I am looking to increase the RAM to 2 GB and upgrade to OS Snow Leopard. I was just wondering if it is as simple as buying new RAM and installing it? And can I upgrade from my current OS to Snow Leopard buy just purchasing the disc and installing on my MacBook?

Did you buy the 29$-version-upgrade or the Mac OS X Box Set for 129? That's in part what I'm really wondering, because it seems a little silly to me to invest another 129 Euros into a MacBook that's already 4,5 years old. Do all the applications still work? (Stuff like Mail, iTunes and Safari is mainly what I'm wondering about)?
My 10.4.11 is starting to fail me and since all the new software updates (especially Skype is bugging me here) are only 10.5 and above compatible.

  • Fingerprint reader and Software for the MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.2

As in my other post I have just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" laptop.  I am in the learning curve as I have only worked with Windows for the past 22 years.
On my HP I had a built in fingerprint reader and I software installed that kept all my passwords (in a database on my pc, NOT in any cloud or web based progam) I use to log onto websites, logon to my computer.
I am looking for the same type of software and a fingerprint reader (small usb no wires if possible) for this MacBook.
    Any ideas?
Also, every time I download and install a application, I get a pop up asking for my credentials, how can I get rid of that "feature"?
    Thank you

What type of property do you have?  Seriously they are less frequent targets lets say.  So do you have AV, Internet security (AVG, AVAST, Norton or some other pkg) Malware software installed on your Mac?
    If so, why?
    If not, why?
Any thoughts to the question this post relates to?
    Thanks

  • What are the main uses for a Macbook Pro, and also for a Macbook Air?

  • What specs/ upgrades should I get for a Macbook pro that I'm buying?

I don't want to spend a ton of money but enough that the macbok pro will be really fast.
I browse the web a lot
I watch youtube and netflix on it
I will need it to do college assignments
I will need to do basic video and picture editing

I think either of the 13" MacBook Pro models would do, with RAM upgraded to 8Gb. That would put you at $1399 for the 2.4GHz, $1699 for the 2.8GHz.
You could save some money by getting a stock MacBook and upgrading the memory via the various third-party RAM vendors. They'll charge a lot less - OWC has an 8Gb upgrade kit for less than $50, vs Apple's $200, and you might even get a rebate for sending your old RAM to them.
Other people may have different opinions, but that's mine. Good luck with your new Mac.

  • What upgrades should I get for my MacBook pro for video editing?, What upgrades should I get for my MacBook pro for video editing?

    Hi,
i am a student and I will use my MacBook pro to edit my movies, I will go to a film school and I think the preview of my previous works has to be professionally done. But I don't know what upgrades should I get to make the editing smooth, and have enough storage.

as an hobbyist on a shoestring budget, but with the head in the sky, based on my own experience:
8GB Ram is ok, 16GB is nice
    most important, aside 'skills': …
<voice of Steve Balmer> ext HDD, ext HDD, ext HDD, ext HDD!!!
I'm handling here 4k material on a MacMini, which doesn't even have a dedicated GPU. In Multicam.
Distribute your materials on several hard drives, make a plan first, before editing, what & where, you get instantly messy and lost without a plan.
What mentioned before: back ups! I'm not shy using a 99€ Raid0 (=two 2.5" drives + Disk Utility's feature, to create 'software raids' ) - Raid0 are NoGo for pros, 'cause it doubles the chance to 'crash' - no prob for me, having my backups - inconvenient to reload everything - but I'm no News Room
For professional 'look' care for the other stuff :
tripod with 'fluid head', lights, more lights, ND filters set, ext. microphone(s) at last a shotgun and a lav, ext audio recorder (I'm abusing my ol' iPhone4 and a tiny box called iRig, which offer XLR connector), did I mention lights? , a good bag and a waterproof, lockable aluminium box, soft boxes for light, maybe a shoulder rig (starting at 80€), 200sq ft of some green cloth for green screening (if your school doesn't offer a 'studio') FCPX does marvel with even really bad lighted green screens, those handy foldable 'brighteners'/reflectors, to bounce light ('Rembrandt lightning') … finally tons of odds and ends, starting with gaffer tape, ending with SDcards ...
And DO things, try things, play with your stuff, make experiments just for the trash bin!
    Enjoy your film school (I'm envy… )

  • MacBook purchased from eBay USA. Difficulty in retrieving USERNAME and PASSWORD for my MACBook Pro

Please help me retrieving my MacBook User ID and Password !!!! URGENT !!!

This was discussed at length in other forums (can't be mentioned here) and there were several people (including myself) involved in some serious, different-scenarios testing. The utlimate goal was/is to publish an all-encompassing user tip since the entirely new/different licensing requirements are confusing at best; however, we have been stymied by a lack of definitive Apple policies on the iLife apps (another story).
So, no, there is no documentation from Apple, but the facts are that Command + R will need an Apple ID and will reinstall the current system, so that is only an option for someone who purchased Lion or ML at the app store (such as the current owner/seller). However, Command + Option + R can be used by the seller to get the machine back to its originally installed system (unless it was SL or previous of course). In an emergency, it can also be used by a buyer; however, the preferred method is to start with the original install media and upgrade from there using their own Apple ID.
When I first saw the new SLA, I submitted a bug report to Apple to be more specific with their instructions - that was shortly after Lion was introduced. I never received a reply.

  • Problems and Questions for the Macbook

I have a core duo macbook and its great but there are a few problems that i have noticed and I just wanted to know if thry were normal.
    1. What to clean the screen with
    2. can I upgrade to a core 2 duo processsor
    3. will windows vista work with boot camp
    4. is 2 gb mem. worth it (how much faster)
    5. Problem: the screen is ofset by about a quarter of a cm. and it is very noticable. i went to a genius and he tightened some screws but that didnt help at all. Is there some way to fix that or will I just have to live with it.
    6. Problem: the screen fram is lose and from the side of the screen you can see through it
    7. If there are fixes for these things how much if any would they cost.
    8. Is there any way to make the speakers louder
    9. a good external hard drive recomendation
macbook core duo 1 gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Let's see -
    1) Absolutely nothing but a microfiber cloth and a little water applied directly to that cloth. Never EVER use any paper products as they are remarkably abrasive. Also, never apply liquid to the display. It will drip down to places that it could cause damage.
    2) No - not without selling this one and purchasing a new one. The CPU is soldered to the logic board and cannot be removed.
    3) Yes. I am using Vista regularly and it works fine. It is still Windows, but it works well enough for casual use. The full version of Boot Camp is supposed to come out with Leopard.
    4) Depends on what you will use your Mac for. If you are using the iLife suite and internet exclusively, then 1GB is probably enough. If you are using pro apps like Photoshop and other non-usiversal binary apps, you will want 2GB.
    5) Take it back in and tell them it was not fixed.
    6) Again, take it in.
    7) Take it in. It is still under warranty.
    8) No. You can get external speakers and they will give you much better sound, but the built-in speakers are a shortcoming of any portable computer.
    9) I use and love my Mercury Elite Pro drive from OWC. As mentioned, USB is slower than FireWire, but you can get a drive that uses both interfaces - which I recommend just in case. I would look for a drive that features the Oxford 911 chipset as it is much more reliable than the cheaper and more common Prolific chipset which has a spotty record when it comes to Macs and PCs alike.
