Upgrade Dilema.....

Fellow aperture users,
I have been using aperture since its initial release on my G4 powerbook 1.33ghz 1.5gb and although at times it is sluggish, I persevere. I should mention, I shoot with a Nikon D70 in RAW format, so my files are only approx 5mb each.
I am considering upgrading my system, but am in a dilema as to what to go for, either the new mac book pro, or a Power Mac G5 DC 2.0GHz /512MB /160GB /SD /GF6600LE.
I would appreciate any feedback as to which performs better using aperture, as well as generally.
i tend to feel I would be better with the mac book, as I like to have my files when I travel, and that way could get away with just one machine, rather than 2. However, I use photoshop also. How are people gettign around this without the intel version? Does it work ok for the meantime? can you still open a file direct from aperture?
thanks in advance,
Svendo

The MacBook Pro will be faster than that particular G5.
If you want a faster G5, you need a couple things:
1) 512 MB of RAM won't work at all. 2 GB is a practical minimum.
2) You need the 7800 GT graphics card and not the GF6600LE. Video card is VERY important. VERY.
Photoshop will be a bit slow on the MacBook. How much are you using it? Adobe's saying it's around 9 months before a UB version of it ships, so do keep that in mind. From a rough guess let's say Photoshop on a MacBook is about the same speed as on a 667 Powerbook G4.

  • My iMac will not upgrade from 10.8.5 to 10.9.3

I am currently running Mac OS 10.8.5 which I purchased via APP Store. I have downloaded the free Mac OS 10.9.3, which claims it is compatabile with Mac OS versions 10.6.8 and higher. However, when I try to run the download, it says that I need version 10.9 in order to upgrade to 10.9.3. I cannot download version 10.9 because only 10.9.3 is available at the App store, or on the Apple web site. My latest Mac OS boot disc is Snow leopard, as I purchased Mountain Lion via App store and do not have a hard copy DVD from which to restore. How do I solve this dilema without restoring operating system to Snow Leopard. Is there a work around? Please advise!!

If you actually went to the Mac App Store and "purchased" Mavericks, then baltwo's answer is your only choice. Nobody here can fix a problem with the Mac App Store.
If you didn't get the Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store and instead downloaded the 10.9.3 Update from Apple Downloads, then you're doing it wrong. That update is for updating 10.9.x to 10.9.3 (or possibly just from 10.9.2 depending on which one you downloaded). To go from 10.8.x to 10.9.x requires the Mavericks Upgrade which is only found in the Mac App Store.

  • Upgraded to CS5, CS4 apps still in place. OK to remove? Best practice?

No problem to report just a minor dilema.
Upgrade to CS5 is completed and all the previous CS4 application folders are still in place and functional.
What is the best practice regarding the previous version?
    Leave them be.
    Move to trash.
    Uninstall (when provided).
    Thanks for your help.

    Bob,
One follow-up question. What about the earlier Acrobat component? Backward compatibility isn't problematic in the case of Acrobat correct?
    Thanks for your time.

  • How to upgrade protected AAC files to iTunes Plus (DRM-free)?

Hi everyone.  I have been purchasing music from the iTunes Music Store ever since it opened here in the US.  Along the way I have purchased both protected AAC files (the original 128 kbps files), iTunes Plus files, and I've upgraded some of the protected to iTunes Plus files for $0.30 over the last few years.  I now have approximately 900 "protected AAC files" left that I wanted to upgrade to iTunes Plus and see the only way to do that now is via iTunes Match.
My dilema is this... I have approximately 900+ files that I want to upgrade and don't feel like manually deleting every track, finding it in the iTunes Music Store, and then redownloading (in the iTunes Plus format).  Is there a way to do all 900+ at one time?
    Thank you,
    Keith

First you need to enable the iCloud Status, Bit Rate and Kind columns so you can see which tracks are "matched" and which are "uploaded." Any tracks that are "uploaded" will not be upgraded. To enable these columns switch to Song view then pull down View > View Options and select the appropriate check boxes then close the small window. Once this is done you can see the tracks that are protected and matched. These tracks can then be deleted from the iTunes library and the HDD (but make sure you have them backed up first, just in case) then downloaded from the cloud. They will then be DRM-free 256 Kbps AAC files.
As Jim points out you will not get a 100% match rate. The process simply isn't that good.

  • PSCS4 Upgrade from 3

When I upgraded from CS2 to CS3, I was advised NOT to take CS2 off the computer as it would still be interacting with CS3.
What should I do now?  I have purchased PSCS4 Upgrade  for my mac (It came by post on a cd).  My dilema is this:
When I purchased the first upgrade I was told that I had to leave PSCS2 on the computer as CS3 would use a number of the files from CS2.  What do I do now?  Do I leave CS2 & CS3 on the computer taking up valuable space or can I now delete the previous versions?  Or does CS4 need to interact with CS3 as with the previous upgrade.
    Thank you

That is absolute hogwash!  CS2 has nothing to do with CS3 (or CS4) nor viceversa.
It's entirely your call.  Same with CS4.  You can keep prior versions or uninstall them.  Your choice.
If the upgrade installer does not find a serial number in a previous version, it will simply prompt you for the old serial number as well as the new one.
However, if you're going to uninstall CS3, (1) use the Adobe Uninstaller in your Utilities folder:
    HardDrive/Applications/Utilities/Adobe/…
DO NOT just drag things to the trash like we could with CS2 and earlier Versions, and (d) uninstall CS3 BEFORE installing CS4.

  • Upgrading to Lion and losing apps

Here's my dilema... I really want to upgrade to Lion for obvious reason, but am a little nervous about losing all my apps. For instance, I bought the new Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite on student discounts, so I only recieved one activation code for those. If I have to reinstall those apps after installing Lion, will that one activation code still work?
Would it be better to go the route of backing up everything to Time Machine? I hope I'm correct when I assume I won't have to activate any apps transferred through TIme Machine.
I would appreaciate help from anyone who can clear this up for me!
    Thank you in advance!

What's a body to do?  Apple may be shafting me by dropping support for older applications but they finally satisfied me by coming out with the new MacBook Air, so I got me a 13"/256 GB storage/4 GB RAM/i7 birthday present to myself, complete with Lion and I will go ahead and install Windows 7/Parallels so I can run Quicken 2011 for Windows.
This machine is also a compromise--I have an original iPad and find myself very frustrated by the lack of Flash support--too many of the web sites I use seem to have embedded Flash videos or other Flash graphics, but I need a highly portable computer to take with me when I travel and I want to be able to run both Flash and Quicken on it so I've been waiting for the new Airs.  And, while portability said "11 inch model", the likelihood of running Windows in a window on my MacOS screen (and watching movies) and the need for room to install both OSs led me to the 13 inch with 256 GB of space.
So I will be running Quicken henceforth on Windows and, I suppose, Turbotax as well.

  • IPhone 6 upgrade question - swapping phones?

Have an iPhone 5 with my line being eligible for upgrade, but want to trade in my husband's 4S (not eligible for upgrade until 11/14). Is this possible? Do we need to swap phones before I do this?

Hmmm? Interesting dilema - I see your concern.
Here is the statement/question regarding the trade-in directly from the Vzn website. The terms say you can trade in ANY iphone from any carrier - so it doesn't have to be the phone that is being upgraded.
Are you purchasing a new Apple iPhone 6 or Apple iPhone 6 Plus with Verizon Wireless and submitting a trade-in request for an iPhone (4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S) that is in good working condition?

  • A dilema!

I know that this is a shot in the dark.  It's highly unlikely that anyone reading these forums has had intimate use of BOTH of the following laptops.  I.E. - has used both and can form an opinion on the tradeoffs given the hardware differences.
A505-S6025 has a Core i3 330M processor (i5 chipset).  Discrete video is the Geforce 300M with 512MB onboard memory.  I purchased this laptop, 12 days ago and love it's performance.  It is a bit marginal, in gaming, but obviously it is not designed as a primary gaming laptop.  Paid $799.
Now... A505-S6986 has a Core2Duo T6600 processor.  Not sure on the chipset, but my last gaming rig I built with the desktop version of that processor.  Think the chipset was 975 or something like that...right before the 'i' motherboards were released.  Video is the GT 230M with 1GB onboard memory.
So this is my dilema.  Clearly, the i3 processor is nice and probably will whip the c2d on processing/multitasking.
Also what is clear is that the GeForce GT 230M would stomp the mainstream 300M.  So, what I need to know is how does this level out in the end?
Is the performance loss in processing power (cpu) versus the gain in gpu power mutual?  ie...  Does the gain make up for the loss...over all.
Couple things need to be thought about here:  different motherboards/chipsets will affect things.  Might also be differences in power consumption/cooling as well.  c2d is a bit old.  My gaming desktop is now 3yrs old with a c2d.  So, that is another concern.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.  They just put the S6986 on sale for $599 at Office Depot.  This is why I'm in a dilema.  I still have 3 days before I'm literally stuck with this laptop.
Only other caveat is that the latter laptop comes with Home version of Windows 7.  I always use pro versions as I like control over my operating system and group policy without using registry hacks.  Only costs $89 to upgrade to pro, from what I understand.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think I've already come to a conclusion.  Writing the initial post just helped me think about it.  This is even after comparing both gpu's and cpu's separately.
I'm going to stick with the i3.  It's very snappy.  4 cores (2 virtual) may not seem like a lot, but couple that with the lower power (read: less heat) and the noticeable performance boost while multitasking (i do that, a lot, especially editing photos while doing other things).
My desktop E6600 c2d can barely handle Vista.  I shudder to think what a mobile version of that die process would mean for Win7.  I can live with 'marginal' performance gaming for the laptop.  When I game, I prefer the desktop with the 40" Samsung 1080p hdtv anyway (yes, it's my monitor...not a tv).
Thanks for reading.  Thoughts still welcomed but I think I'm gonna stick with the S6025 after weighing all of the pros/cons.

  • IPod no longer works with car stereo since upgraded MBA & iTunes

My iPod classic has worked just fine connected to my car stereo since i bought it last june. I just bought a new Macbook Air (OS 10.7.3) & installed ITUNES 10.6.1. After I synched my ipod for the first time its recognised by the car but i get a "can't read data" message. I re-formatted my ipod but its exactly the same. Do you think its the upgrade- or the cable? Has anyone else found a bug with this version of Itunes or the OS? I have my doubts a cable would make the difference, and my old ipod nano that i haven't synched for a while works fine.

If standalone works fine, then, most likely the 30 pin connect may have some dirt or lint, prevent data transfer.
You can try to blow it clean, if you have a can of compressed air or gas.
Alternatively you can connect it to the car stereo and do the RESET, while connnected.as follows
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
The Reset sequence may send a signal to the Car stereo to do the right thing

  • Brand new IPOD Touch Apps no longer work after upgrading software

I got a Ipod touch for my wife Today at Wal-Mart. I brought it home, connected to wifi and downloaded some apps and also payed for some. They all worked fine. Then I connected to computer to transfer songs. It told me to upgrade the Ipod software so i Did. After it restarted none of the downloaded apps work anymore. I have read MANY MANY MANY discussions on this and there is no fix. I am not wiping out all the songs and reload everything all over again. It will take forever. My wifes BD is Friday and this is making me so mad after I just dropped $300 on this thing. APPLE!!! Where is the fix? I deleted the apps and reinstalled they still don't work. Anybody got this figured out? I am getting ready to get my money back and tell everyone to avoid buying ipod until they get this upgrade bug fixed.
Message was edited by: 2009 IPOD TOUCH

I have the same problem. Brand new two days ago. I synched the touch with Itunes but wasn't hooked up to the internet at the time so didn't do the software upgrade right away. Then I downloaded about a dozen apps (free and paid) with wifi directly to the touch. They all worked fine. Then I plugged it back in to Itunes and had it upgrade it to 3.1.2. It locked up Itunes several times since then and the downloaded apps no longer work (they start to open then disappear).
The problem is, no one is listening to this problem (including Anna above)! Everyone says "just do a hard reboot, or restore to factory settings, reload the apps, etc." I've tried all the standard troubleshooting but none of it fixes this. It sure seems to me this is a problem with 3.1.2 but Apple isn't helping out here. Where are you APPLE? Use some of those outrageous profits you're making to fix the problem you have created. Here's $300 of my hard earned dollars pretty much down the drain.

  • Ipod touch can no longer connect to XP following Apple upgrade, HELP !

This is a nightmare. My son has an ipod touch (8gb)purchased a couple of months, and it's been fine until a couple of days ago. I downloaded some music for him, and just about to synch when Apple informed me on itunes of a software upgrade, so naturally I did this. However, it could not complete it saying there was a problem installing the hardware. The ipod then had a permanent picture of a usb cable pointing towards the itunes logo. Itunes no longer recognises this ipod or my own ipod as a device.
I'm not a techhie expert, but I generally know my way around computers, however I could not resolve this.
I called the Apple technical support desk, where I spent 1 hour 45 minutes with 2 different advisors who could not resolve this. We installed and re-installed various components from drivers to itunes to anti virus software, however nothing could change. There was simply no recognition of the ipod at all when connected. It does give a pop up message to restore the ipod, however you can't actually click on the restore button because to have to get rid of the pop up message first, then the screen with the restore facility disappears.
Windows xp is continually popping up a message saying " FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD There was a problem installing this hardware. Apple Mobile USB driver. An error occured during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified."
You then have to click on finish, however the message keeps coming back. We kept going round and round in circles with the technical support people, where it was left that I should start removing programmes on my computer to see if any of those are causing a problem. I have had the same spyware for the last 12 months now and never had a problem before, nor any other programmes.
I booked a genius appointment at my local Apple store today where the assistant reset the ipod to factory settings so it could at least work. I explained the situation, however 15 minutes was never going to be long enough to look into it, and a restore was all they did. Obviously all of my programmes were lost, however when I got home and plugged it back into the computer again, it could not be recognised by itunes and i got the same pop up message. Luckily we have not spent alot on downloads, however my son has lost his music now and it cannot be connected or upgraded. It's under guarantee however a software upgrade by Apple has totally messed my computer up. I really don't know who to turn to now as both the service support and store has not rectified this, something I feel has been caused by Apple.
    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Just upgraded HDD, now how do I get my data back??

I just upgraded my stock 60GB HD to a 120GB Seagate Momentus 5400 ($100). This is what I did:
    1. Before removing the 60GB HD, i created a read-only disk image of my HD(with Disk Utility on the OSX install CD). I put this disk image on my USB external hard drive.
    2. Physically replaced the 60GB with the 120GB.
    3. Now, I boot up the computer to the OSX install CD (since it is a blank new HD). I open up Disk Utility on the install CD, and try to restore the image i created (on my external USB HD) to my new 120GB internal drive. I am able to select the image to restore, but cannot select my internal drive as the destination.
I have all sorts of music, movies, applications...etc. on my old HD that I want on my new drive.
I want to have my computer be identical to before I upgraded, just with a larger HD. Is this possible?
I have tons of external USB HD space to use if needed, and I also still have the old HD... if I need to create a different kind of disk image or something.
    Please help!
    Macbook 2.0GHz (White)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I did this already. I failed to mention it in my first post. I have my HD "111.8 GB Seagate..." and underneath it: "Macintosh HD". Still can't restore an image to the "Macintosh HD" volume.

  • Lock-ups on MCS-7825 after after OS Upgrade to 2000.4.4aSR6

About 3 weeks ago, I upgraded some MCS-7825 & MCS-7835 servers to 2000.4.4aSR6. Since then, one of the 7825's has been rebooting on its own almost twice a day. The other 7825 and 7835s are operating fine.
Anybody else encountering a problem with this? I see in the release notes, some BIOS and firmware updates are included for the 7825, and am suspecting this is the problem.

My problems actually turned out to be hardware, I think. I reviewed the logs and found out it had been happening for several months.
