Upgrade external HD from Mavericks to Yosemite

Hi,
On my MBP I have installed Mavericks 10.9.5.
Then I have a couple of external hard drive with a clone of Mavericks 10.9.5.
If I have a cloned hard drive plugged in (not booting off from it), and I run the installer of Yosemite and I tell to install Yosetime on the external hard drive (where there’s a clone of Mavericks 10.9.5) what would then happen.
Would Yosemite erase everything from the clone, or would the clone upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, else?
Thanks

No, the Yosemite install will not erase everything on the clone.
Yes, the clone would upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite. All your apps and data will not be touched.
I actually did something similar onto an SD card. I installed Yosemite 10.10, apps and data. Then later, I ran the 10.10.1 installer against the SD card and all that happened was Yosemite updated from 10.10 to 10.10.1. Nothing else was touched.

If you have an external drive with an OS X Time Machine backup, then do restore of your last backup. If you have an external drive  with a bootable clone of your previous system, you can boot to that clone and re-clone the OS X on your external drive back to your Mac's internal drive.
If you do not have either of these available, then the reverting/restoring process becomes much more complicated and involves purchasing an external drive and backing up your current system to that drive, then erasing, reformatting your hard drive and now your only options to installng an OS X version is doing a clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, then upgrading, again, to either OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer available for download and Apple has not made OS X 10.9 Mavericks available in any other form to be able to redownload and install.

  • Problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Hello everyone.I have noticed some battery problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite like no charging at all (but the orange led was on )and not able to fully charged.I solve them with SMC reset and PRAM reset.Furthermore, battery discharges faster than before and its really annoying. Now I have notice that the upper right corner of my mac is getting hot.I'll appreciate any help
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • Upgrade the OS from Maver to Yosemite.. message "There is no enough disk space available to install this product". Please help.

I have 5.12gb space on my Macbook Air (Mid 2012). But when i attempt to upgrade the OS from Maver to Yosemite, i get a message "There is no enough disk space available to install this product". Please help

You need to temporarily free up additional drive space - the Yosemite download itself is just over 5GB and then it needs more space to install it. Once the new OS is installed the installer will be deleted. Music and movie files are large and will be the most convenient files to remove to an external drive.
On another note it isn't a good idea to try to run the computer with so little free drive space. Look for files you can offload to an external drive permanently. For example, I keep my music and movies on an external drive. You can keep a small assortment of music on the computer but save lots of space by keeping the regular media library off the computer.

  • Can I install os9 on an external drive from mavericks

Can I install OS9 on an external drive from Mavericks? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on both my MBP and 27" iMac. I have my original OS9 install disc. I'd like to install OS9 on an external drive so I can use some classic apps that I'd like to use.
I tried to install directly to an external drive, but when I click on the Mac OS Install icon, I get the message "You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damaged or incomplete." The icon for Mac OS Install is the generic page with an A. Figuring that Mavericks doesn't recognize the app. Then I restarted and held down the C key - no luck.

I understand, but was hoping I boot off an external drive in 9. Thanks for your response and I apologize for my late response.

Back up all data. Update all third-party software to the latest version and remove any you don't need. Download the Yosemite installer from the App Store. Run it.

    Thanks from Zurich,

So does that mean Apple has simply abandoned a proprietary paid for iOS app?
That has happened before - remember iWeb?
But this time Apple has provided a migration to the successor app, Photos.
For iPhoto and Aperture on the Mac is not much known (Aperture is Dead. Long Live Photos! | ApertureExpert), only, that there will be a "Photos" for MacOS X.
anyone with Yosemite Beta in the loop?
Beta testers are bound by a non-disclosure agreement, and beta-issues must to be discussed in the public forums, or we will be in trouble. Neither are we allowed to speculate, sorry.

  • Wifi issues after upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite. No solutions have worked.

I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 from Mavericks. Having wifi issue where I can't connect to my home network. It connects for 5 seconds than I get "no IP address", and then the connection drops. A free local wifi connection does work. Any ideas until this issue is fixed by Apple? My home router worked fine in Maverick. I tried all the online suggestions but nothing has worked. Have not downgraded yet to Maverick but thinking about it.

  • Just upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and now only one of my two iPhoto libraries seems to be available.  Please help.

I have just updated my iMac from Mavericks 10.9.5 to Yosemite 10.10.3.
I had two different libraries in iPhoto due to the amount of photos stored.  In iPhoto I was able to click on File
and could select to Switch between either of the libraries.
Now in Photos on Yosemite it initially asked me which library and now that is the only library available to me.
When I go into my Pictures folder in the Finder it does not show my other Library.
I had about 60,000 photos stored in that library and now I can no longer find or access.
    Please help.  Thanks so much.
