Upgrade FCS 3

Hello,
I've searched on the the store site for education (I'm university student). It seems there is no upgrade for Final Cut Studio 3, only the complete new version for Academic.
Is that normal ? Do I just have to get bye an upgrade from the normal store.
I'm just making sure before I get out the money
Thank your for your attention

Yes, that is normal. Generally, academic versions do NOT qualify for upgrades.

    Dear
i need to upgrade Fcs 2 for Fcs3

Since the release of FCPX, Apple discontinued sale of previous FCS software... Your only option is to buy it used...

  • Upgrade FCS compatability

I purchased both FCS 1 and upgraded to FCS2 in Australia. I want to upgrade to FCS (3) purchased in the US. does anyone know if the US version is compatible with Aus version. Ie will it recognize that I have FCS installed and instal the upgrade. I presume that the software is not regionally restricted.
    Cheers

does anyone know if the US version is compatible with Aus version.
The set of discs in the box is identical, worldwide. The files on the discs are identical regardless of whether you paid full retail or upgrade pricing.
The differences are the languages used on the packaging and printed documentation, and the type of serial number included.

  • Upgrading FCS

Hello all. I have a quick question about software purchase policies at Apple. Just thought someone out there might know. I can't imagine that I am the only one affected by this...
I bought Final Cut Studio about a week ago and installed it. Just recently Apple releases a new version of FCS. So, I call apple to see if they have a grace period or an up to date program. The person I spoke with said that I would have to buy the upgrade, after only owning my copy for a few days. Wha???
I've purchased software from other vendors in the past that would offer a free upgrade if a product was purchase with in a certain timeframe of a new version. Is this not the case with Apple software?
    Does anyone know?

We've heard conflicting reports. We see this topic with every upgrade that costs money.
Suggest you call apple again, ask to speak to a supervisor. Might not get you anywhere but keep watching the forum and keep posting.

  • Upgraded fcs and no client conect

i just upgraded my FCS and now my clients will not connect. the computer restarted after the up grade and i followed the best practices, but now there seams to be no web interface for the clients to connect to?
    any one have any surgestions

What upgrade did you do? If you just went to 1.5 you may want to follow the step in the kb article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3836. If it was just a minor upgrade, however, you should be able to just download the client again via http://hostname-of-server/finalcutserver and connect.

  • Upgrade FCS Academic To FCS 6

My academic serial number is not working when the new final cut studio 6 upgrade installation asks for my old serial number. I am positive I wrote it correctly, why does it say that it is invalid?

FinalThis, in case you're looking for a second
opinion, here is is: Danny_boy is correct. A FCS1
academic serial number will not work with the FCS2
    retail upgrade package.
At this point you probably have two options: contact
your retailer and see if you can swap the upgrade
package for the retail version and pay the
difference, or, try to find a buyer for the upgrade
and stick with FCS1 'till you can afford to buy the
    retail version.
I feel terrible now because I cannot get a refund but i clarified with the apple sales person exactly what I had so that no problems would occur. They cannot be allowed to do this, I should receive a refund because I was told otherwise. I would have never bought it (obviously). are exceptions made?

  • Latest FCS and 20" 2.4ghz iMAC...

running 2gig of RAM with the ATI Radeon HD2400T (128MB card), with an external FW800 RAID -- project footage shot with HVX200 P2 -- 720/24P Native... Anyone running this type of configuration, cutting this format? Will it RUN on the new iMAC?
I'm looking to use the FCP and Motion applications only.
I'm assuming once I purchase the FCS and OS upgrade for our 17" MBP, I can load the upgraded FCS onto the iMAC (provided its not on any other Mac)

Sure it will. I would look to max out the RAM though. I am runninga 17" MBP with about the same specs using very similar footage and it does very well.

FCP will run fine, you may find Motion a little sluggish with that video card.

Per the EULA you may have FCS installed on one desktop and one notebook as long as they are not being used at the same time and that they are owned by the same person.

  • Upgrade and invalid serial number

I am trying to upgrade FCS to FCS2. Both are academic versions. It keeps telling me that the serial number on FCS is invalid. A search brought up that FCP5 cannot be upgraded to FCP6 in the academic version. Is the same true for FCS?

After calling Apple and being transfered eight different times, I was told that I could not return the upgrade for a full version because it had been more than two weeks since I had ordered it. I didn't try installing it because I was in the middle of a large project and didn't want any problems. After explaining that I had just thrown $500 away, the person spoke to his supervisor and allowed me to return the upgrade. David S. was correct in that the academic version cannot be upgraded. However, I don't see this mentioned anywhere in the Apple store for education. I thought I had done this when I switch from FCP2 to FCP3, but that's been awhile back so maybe I'm wrong.

  • Can u upgrade Final Cut studio product key from a G-5 platform to a new intel processor?

Can u upgrade Final Cut studio product key from a G-5 platform to a new intel processor?

Not sure here ... you want to upgrade Final Cut Studio or do you want to move the version you have to an Intel Mac? Both is possible if you meet the system requirments.
    1. Upgrade FCS
The Final Cut Studio upgrade provides an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 2, Final Cut Studio 1, Production Suite, or any prior version of Final Cut Pro. Academic and Not-For-Resale (NFR) versions are not eligible for upgrade.
    2. Upgrade to Intel Mac
You may run the applications on one desktop and one laptop at the same time

  • Serial number/ upgrade issues....

Hiya. The company I work for has two macs with FCP on. Originally FCP version 4.5 was installed. This was later upgraded with a 5.1 upgrade. Since then a FCP Studio 2 upgrade has been purchased as we were told that we would be able to upgrade any version with the studio 2 upgrade. However when I try to do this I get a "you cannot upgrade from this serial number message. Is this because I am trying to upgrade an upgrade?? If someone could advise whether I am flogging a dead horse I would be most grateful thank you.

There are two different upgrade items for FCS2. The one you should have purchased is the other one.
The one that upgrades FCS 1 or FCS 5.1 is less expensive than the one that upgrades FCP 4.5 or below.
You need the one that upgrades FCP, not the one that upgrades FCS.
EDIT: You might call AppleCare and see if they will let you pay the difference between the two upgrade packages and get the one that upgrades FCP instead.

  • Unable to initialize video deck help

Yesterday my sony dvcam deck that had been working well for around 3 years failed to initialize and I can't get final cut to recognize it. I've tried everything. I trashed the prefs, reinstalled final cut, reinstalled quicktime, deleted the quicktime receipts, different presets etc. and nothing seems to work. I can capture video with imovie and quicktime but final cut won't recognize it. I have nowhere else to turn!
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Tim

"...When the problem occurred my versions were:
    OS - 10.4.11
    FCP - 5.1.4
    QT - 7.6.2..."
This may have started the issue. FCP 5.1.4 works best with the OS you list, but also QT 7.1.2(or3). Inadvertently upgrading QT above this has been know to bungle FW connectivity.
My guess is that you process of upgrading FCS hasn't cleared the issue.
So, you may be correct, in that...depending on how you accomplished the FCS upgrade, you may need to restart the process.
Since I've not had to do this, I'll let others post details, or search this forum for somethiing like... "FCP doesn't recognize", or some such terminology. We've seen this often in the past.
Best procedure is to do a complete archive/erase/install of all components...OS/FCP/QT, which gets you up to date with best clean combination.
This link may be of assistance regarding best combos...

EDIT - just noticed you're on a PPC G5. My understanding is that G5's will not work with Snow Leopard, so be advised...Leopard is as high as you should go with the OS.

  • A tale of two (or rather four) cities/perspectives.

The amount of conversation that has happened on these boards the last week has been nothing short of amazing. The passion, persistence and sheer love of what people do made it fun to read and watch, even when things would get slightly out of hand. It is why most professionals love what they do -- passion. When people love something, they take ownership of it, even if they had little hand in creating it. A company like Apple engenders a lot of this, because for the most part, it is the way they do business that makes the the perfect choice to use as tools to run our businesses and causes.
I have watched as diverse opinions, which in many cases came at odds centered around a product that most likely had never seen an ounce of the code, nor know any of the developers that made it come to fruition. Four distinctly different sides (in no particular order): the consumer, prosumer, professional and the apple fan. Each had almost an entirely different point of view, yet each one had their reasons and rights to weigh in on a brand new product.
Here is the coolest thing about all of this... Most companies would KILL for what has happened here this last week. How many companies truly have products that inspire so much territorial-like protection and social marketing? If this were a product from most other companies, little would be said. But, these are people that live to push their own limits, daring to dream and then pulling out the stops to make it a reality. I have to believe that this is exactly why no matter which side of the FInal Cut Studio argument they are on, each holds a reverence for both the former and the new product. They have let it become part of their lives, either professionally or personally, because it made a difference where other programs have not. This is a testament to just how good Apple can and does building solutions (when it wants to). When Apple does not live up to the level it has gotten us accustomed to, people feel like they lost out on what could have been.
That all said, here is what I have taken from the last week.
I was very, very much looking forward to a new pro-offering in the video market. Having seen them slowly let other pro-level programs and solutions fade over the years, I had hoped that this was so that things that Apple has historically been brilliant at come back to their full brilliance. Secretly, I had hopes that Apple was taking everything they had in Final Cut Studio, Shake, Logic and every other Apple talent and wrap it up into something mind-blowingly brilliant.
As a backup in my mind, I knew that we already had FCS and had hoped that if it did not deliver, at least we would get an upgraded FCS that actually for once took advantage of the hardware Steve and Phil have been telling us we needed as professionals for years. Can you imagine that something like FCS was still unable to utilize the resources of machines released in 2006? So, the idea of at least getting to see workstations utilized was a dream come true. Even if no new features came to the table, we would have a suite we could rely on and really start to flex the muscle of the resources we had invested so much in over the years. Most people think that to be a professional, it just takes buying FCS. In reality, it is thousands of dollars beyond that to get a complete solution, and in most cases, years to integrate and finesse everything to work to the level that when you see a feature film, television show, documentary or commercial, they look the very best they can.
What may seem like a bunch of whiners is only because we want to deliver our very best and when the toolset that is used is thrown away and the roadmap is blurry, at best, it lease us wondering what to tell our clientele, or how we are going to replace what we have to continue to be competitive in an ever changing environment. Now, imagine you have an entire facility built around that solution, with hundreds of thousands of dollars that was centered around a solution that just was "end-of-lifed." Imagine knowing that you will have to either add to or replace systems and now, you cannot even get the current version of the suite you were sold on as a long-term solution from Apple. Now, try to factor in how you are going to have to slowly find a more long-term solution and know that it cuts money out of the budget for raises, benefits or even outright salaries, just to keep a solution that the business needs for stability.
I think if you ask the professional on this list, it is not as much about Final Cut Pro X, as much as it is about the way Apple handled it. The complete disregard for selling on an enterprise-level solution, all while knowing that they were going to get out of the professional market altogether. It is a respect and trust issue at stake and not a software, nor even solution-based issue. If this is a move Apple needs to make, be open and honest, so that we have a chance to make smart business decisions that can be long term.
On the other side of the argument, I think that the prosumer market just got a heck of a nice tool for doing much of what we have built entire solutions to accomplish. They are slowly getting tools to make even the most mundane video project extraordinary. They really are the beneficiaries of the new software, and I look forward to how it inspires our next generations of videographers, motion graphic artists, editors, directors, producers. This definitely will be a tool that will help them.
Having said that, the way Apple handled the professional market was extremely unprofessional, at best. As a company with such an immense talent pool, resource and technical capabilities, and a marketing arm that rivals almost any company on the planet, I expected them to handle this much, much more appropriately. As professionals, we could not survive if we treated our clientele in this manner, so I am no about to continue to reward them with continued sales for solutions they clearly have little interest in producing. I am also going to remain a little more apprehensive when they come to me showing new large-scale solutions. While companies like Avid and Adobe have their faults, they generally do listen to professionals, and as a reward engender great customers. We also are not afraid to pay for solutions. They respect this (for the most part), whereas Apple thinks that only its opinion need matter. Final Cut was an amazing suite, in many ways because Apple collaborated with some of the best in the industry to make it do what was not just needed, but wanted and dreams about. That is where magic begins.
Steve, Phil, Randy... You let a lot of us down. You could have had FCS, FCPX and looked brilliant. You did not have to burn the bridges down. Or, if you wanted us to go elsewhere, at least had the respect to give us a head's up and some solutions to ease the transition. Instead, you simply didn't care, and still don't seem to care. Is this how you would like us to look at future Apple solutions? If you are going to abandon those that spend a good portion of income on end-to-end Apple solutions and watch you throw them away, what next is on the chopping block? If you want the respect of businesses, then you need to show businesses respect.

I haven't tried to find out the cause of this stir, only days after I purchased my home-use FCS/hardware package. If companies are trying to restrict the access to the technology it could only be to give interests like yours time to adjust. I suggest you do so quickly, since people like me now know the capabilities and pricing requirements of the technology, and we don't stand for bogus monopoly in the land of individual liberty.
However, I suspect Apple feels and acts with the same premises, and I know that's true for all the best companies, so I am looking forward only to the continuation of more and better solutions in the future.

  • FCP 5.1.4 stopped working on 10.6.8

    Hi all,
I'm stumped.  I have both Early 2008 MP (8-core Intel Xeon) and mid 2011 MBP (intel i7).  Both running 10.6.8 and FCS 1 (updated through ProKit 5.1).
on my MBP, the FCS1 and all its components (FCP5.1.4, DVDPro 4, etc) launches fine.
on my MP, recently there's been some OS degradation issue, so I had to do a clean install of the OS.  But when I reinstalled FCS1, it won't launch.  When I open FCP5, it will start the launch sequence, but after it gets to the usual "some FW cannot be found" error message that I've been ignoring ever since I got it, it just aborts.
In the past, I have reinstalled (clean install) of both 10.6 and FCS1 and never had a problem.  I don't know where it went wrong.  I just don't understand why it works on my MBP and not MP anymore.
I've read up on a lot of the FCP5 vs 10.6 issues on this forum.  based on this, I'm going to attempt another clean install starting from 10.6.  or should I start from 10.5, install FCP, then upgrade to 5.1.4, then upgrade to 10.6?? (didn't have to do that before, so still doesn't tell me what is going wrong).  on this current bad installation i didn't install QT7 until after FCS was installed.  so next time I will install QT before FCS and see if that helps.  when I launch QT, it does recognize "Pro Apps" registration, so.. it's not like it's being ignored.
another funny thing is after I install ProKit 5 update, I can't install ProKit 5.1.. the Prokit 5.1 installer says "yo need ProKit 5.0 to install".  so it also seems for whatever reason the ProKit 5.0 isn't taking..?  (installer says it successfully installed)
Then I tought to upgrade FCS for $299, and just found out that they phased out the upgrade path unless you shell out full price either on eBay or *may be* Apple.  BOO!
I don't use FCP much, but have used it occasionally in the past.  so if I can get it working, I would like to.
any insights?  in the next round of re-installation, I'm planning on this:
    1.  wipe out HDD
    2.  clean install 10.6.0 (that's the installer I have)
    3.  update OS to 10.6.8
    4.  install QT 7
    5.  install FCS1  (It is one of the first-generation upgrade when FCS first came out, so not sure which version FCP5 installs)
    6.  update FCS1 as per Software Update list (SU no longer lists ProKit 5 or 5.1 anymore.  why is that?)
    any other ideas?

    Hi all,
I've tried everything.  bombed the OS (erase the root drive), did clean-install, did full install of FCS1... used the software updater to update the FCS1 (only wanted to update Pro apps update 2006 stuff.. not the prokit 5 or 5.1... )
and it worked ONCE.  I was so happy I got it fixed... and had to do permission repair (thanks to the java updaters)...
and it wont' work again.  DVDPro, Sountrack, motion, etc all others launches ok, and so far seem to function ok (haven't really run it through doing an actual project, but at least it launches, where FCP aborts after loading RT Extreme stuff)
    I don't understand...  :-(
and yeah. one can say "don't do permission repair" but that shouldn't have affected it (FCS component didn't show up for anything that needed fixing)
I managed to buy an FCS2 upgrade on eBay at a decent price (not inflated $$ like the FCS3 is going for these days!).  Waiitng for the seller to ship me the copy, and update.. and hope it works...
if not, something's gone really wrong with my machine.  Did DIsk Warrior (v4.3), checked and verified/repaird all HDD on the machine (i've got 3 in stalled on the MacPro)...
in the mean time, I'll just keep using the one on my MBP (that has essentially an identical setup, same OS, same updates, just different machines) and limp along...
    just... weird.

  • 'Crossgrade' Questions?!?

Okay, so I notice on the Apple Store page for the Crossgrade from FCP 1, 2, or 3 that it says, "Academic and not-for-resale versions of Final Cut Pro 1, 2, or 3 are not eligible for this upgrade.", I was told when I purchased my FCP 3 Academic from Apple that it would be capable to be upgraded to the retail version for all future versions...and 2.1 versions later they tell me this isn't so. Is that the case? And I thought I got screwed when I received and opened FCP 3 a half hour before 4 was announced and they would not work with me to get FCP 4.
Two, if you already owned Final Cut Studio with FCP 5.0.x you still need to pay $99 and mail in your disc to get Final Cut Studio Universal?
Three, is there anyway to upgrade FCS to FCS Universal without mailing in the disc...say going into the Apple Store and trading them discs there?
    eMac 1.42GHz (work)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 1.42GHz Dual Processor (home) + 60BG Black Video iPod

Afraid I don't know anything about the Academic versions, but yes, if you already owned FCS 5.0.x you still needed to pay $49 and mail in your discs. Finally, there's no way to upgrade via the store - you have to mail it in.

  • Flip4mac exports out of sync

    Hi all,
Suddenly, when I export WMVs using QT Converter (flip4mac) my clips end up out of sync. Any help would be appreciated - Steve

When I export a wmv the audio is always from the beginning of the sequence, regardless of where the in and out points are. For example, if I export a 30sec spot that's third in a sequence, the audio will be from the first spot. Or in my most recent try, tone from the bars that were at the beginning. I also get the other problems mentioned - it hangs up at 98% finished and the file sizes are three to four times as large.
I've had this problem for a few weeks, and it didn't go away after upgrading FCS and the OS last week.
