Upgrade FCS Academic To FCS 6

My academic serial number is not working when the new final cut studio 6 upgrade installation asks for my old serial number. I am positive I wrote it correctly, why does it say that it is invalid?

academic serial number will not work with the FCS2
retail upgrade package.
At this point you probably have two options: contact
your retailer and see if you can swap the upgrade
package for the retail version and pay the
difference, or, try to find a buyer for the upgrade
and stick with FCS1 'till you can afford to buy the
retail version.
I feel terrible now because I cannot get a refund but i clarified with the apple sales person exactly what I had so that no problems would occur. They cannot be allowed to do this, I should receive a refund because I was told otherwise. I would have never bought it (obviously). are exceptions made?

FCS academic to FCS 2 regular version

I currently have the academic version of Final Cut Studio . I am about to purchase the regular version of FCS 2 . This will not be an upgrade since academic versions cannot be upgraded , it will be a brand new install of FCS 2. My question is , do I need to uninstall the academic version before I install FCS 2 ? If I do need to uninstall what is the cleanest way to do that ?

FCS 2 and a dual G5 runs fine. That graphics card should also be up to Motion 3 as well. My old 128mb card was limping with it, but the 256 card you have should make it fine.
IMHO, the clean install is by far the surest way to get to a happy system, and IMHO, it should be done periodically anyway. On a busy system, it sure makes things hum... We do it every semester at the school I teach at part time, and we have extremely stable setups there.

Uninstalling FCS Academic

I'd been using Final Cut Studio Academic for the past year on my 17" Mac Book Pro for a year. I used to have another Final Cut Studio Retail on a G5 which I sold a few months ago along with the installed FCS. So now I find out that FCS Academic is not upgradeable and I have to buy an entirely new FCS2 Academic, and since my academic credential is in doubt, I've decided to bite the bullet and get a new FCS2 Retail complete.
My question is: should I uninstall FCS1 Academic on my MBP before installing FCS2 Retail because a) the FCS2 is the retail version, b) the FCS2 is a stand-alone app and not an upgrade. And if the answer is yes, can someone point me to a foolproof uninstall process?

has uninstall info and it should work on the academic also.
I am not sure I would uninstall the old software in case there are compatibility/conversion issues, some people mentioned those with some filters (I think) on another thread.
Sometimes there can be issues with having some of the old software (such as Compressor templates in one upgrade), but I usually make sure to have the old software available one way or another in case I need to use it again

Installing FCS Academic

I am about to install FCS academic. I have a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I understand I may install my one copy into both.
Does it matter which one I do first?

as far as i know (i have academic also) your serial number is all you use to install, and the registration will allow two installations to be registered under your serial number. so you can install them in any order and it doesn't matter.

Upgrading from Academic

First, I know you're not supposed to be able to upgrade from academic. However, I've looked at the FCS pages on the website and the Apple Store online and can't find any information that says you can't. Is it possible Apple is allowing upgrading from academic to retail with FCS3?
If no one is 100% sure and there isn't any information online about it, do you think I'd be able to return the upgrade if I wanted to try it and it didn't work? Especially since there's nothing anywhere that actually says you can't. That way I can purchase the full version.
If not, I have this situation, and this may be a dumb question....
A very long time ago, probably about 8 or 9 years, I purchased Final Cut Pro 1.something or 2. I believe this was purchased at an academic price, but I was given a full retail version. The problem is it's nowhere to be found. I probably tossed it when I moved a some years back figuring I'd never need it again (big mistake). Does Apple keep a record of these purchases/registrations? Is there a department I can contact at Apple to find out what my serial number was so I can upgrade from that older version I had?

No, not for the retail discounted price.
You have three choices.
1. bit the bullet and purchase FC Studio 2 retail.
2. use what you have and be happy.
3. purchase FC Studio 2 Academic for ~$699.
Recognize that the academic price for FCS2 is only $200 more than the retail upgrade from FCS1>FCS2 - not a bad deal for a 'non-upgradable' bit of software.

FCS academic pricing very enticing

Academic pricing on FCS is offered at the university where I work. I know that it's not upgradable. On the other hand, the full price for FCS is just too steep for the time being.
What I'd like to know is when the latest version of the FCS suite was released. My guess is that, if it was a relatively recent release I might be OK with purchasing the academic version and expecting it to be a current product for some time (a year or two?).
Can someone tell me when the latest FCS was released?

Thank you all for your knowledgeable responses. My university bookstore has FCS at a price that makes it attractive and somewhat lower than the academic price you mention. (However, next week I’ll check on whether it’s an older version that they might be trying unload from their inventory.)
Because I’m fairly new to higher end editing I know it will take me some time to feel comfortable editing with it. For now FCE seems to be doing all that I need.
I’m looking at FCS because part of a project that I hope to be doing will have clips recorded at 24fps in addition to 30fps. I’ve never used 24fps, but I read that FCE cannot edit it.

Just checking, but did you purchase the FCS upgrade? If you did, it won't work as there is no upgrade path from FCE to FCS.

License Question: Selling previous upgrade to buy new FCS upgrade.

I'm interested in selling my previous upgrade copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and purchasing the upgrade for Final Cut Studio 3.
Final Cut Studio 2 is an upgrade version. I already own FCP1, which I used as the base for the FCS2 upgrade. I want to sell the FCS2 upgrade, but not my copy of FCP1 (since I want to use this for my new upgrade version).
So, what I'd like to do is the following:
- Sell Final Cut Studio 2, but retain ownership of FCP 1 (that I've had for years)
- Buy Final Cut Studio 3, and upgrade from FCP1
What gives me pause is the message in the SLA that states:
Updates: If an Apple Software update completely replaces (full install) a previously licensed version of the Apple Software, you may not use both versions of the Apple Software at the same time nor may you transfer them separately. NFR (Not for Resale) Copies: Notwithstanding other sections of this License, A
I'm not quite sure how to read that. While I definitely see an issue with someone upgrading to Final Cut Studio, and then selling the software used as the base of that upgrade, what I'm doing is actually the opposite. (Selling the upgrade software, and keeping my original FCP Version 1 license so I can use it for a newer upgrade).
Is there someone in Apple legal I can contact about this?

Upgrade FCS2 Academic to FCS3 Academic

MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel 4GB RAM. OS 10.5.8. Just tried to upgrade twice, following prompts to load discs as presented. Custom install as presented. After 'Successful Installation' computer runs dead slow. 10-20 seconds to get a response when clicking on a menu or disclosure triangle. After minutes, program opens. Video will not play. Takes many seconds to get the playhead to move on the timeline.
Tried different startups: other programs on the computer operate normally until any FCS3 program is opened, then everything bogs down dead slow. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong with my install? Thanks.

Hi Tom - the non-upgradable part about the academic version has been a bit of a source of confusion to me. When I inserted discs screen information indicated that programs would be 'upgraded' and so I assumed it would work. I will run FCS remover and try again - I am certain your answer holds the key and I thank you for your quick response.

Upgrade of academic version possible in Europe

I bought Aperture in Europe with an academic discount in November 2005, when it did still cost $500 without the discount in the U.S.. I paid 399 francs (my local currency), the full version then was probably 699 or 799 francs. I later got a voucher over 250 francs.
I now bought an upgrade to Aperture 2.0 for 139 francs (after having called and asked whether it would work). And it works fine.
In total, I therefore paid 290 francs and now have a full version of Aperture 2.0. I bought a 299 francs iPod nano with the 250 francs voucher, paying only (299/1.076 - 250)*1.076 = 30 francs for it. By saving another 20 francs in taxes, I in fact only paid 270 francs for my two versions of Aperture.
(Using todays exchange rate, that is only $260, including taxes. Using the Nov 2005 exchange rate, it is more like $205.)

Upgrading from Academic version to Regular versions

I am a student right now and I am taking a class to learn how to use my new DSLR. I will probably never be a professional photographer but plan on avidly pursuing this hobby. I was thinking of purchasing an academic version of Photoshop CS3.
My question is:
When a new version of photoshop comes out (for example CS4) will I be able to purchase the upgrade version if I own the academic version of cs3 or will I have to purchase the full version?
Or in other words are the academic versions upgradable?
I spent alot of time on the adobe web site trying to find an answer but it just sends you in circles and circles without ever answering any questions. frusterating really. I could not even locate an e-mail address of anyone to answer a question.

Two questions.
1. I have FCP 6 academic. Can I upgrade it at the $299 price?
2. My serial number was voided when Apple did a repair on my computer. When I type in the numbers, it says it's the wrong serial number. How do I fix this? And can I still upgrade if I don't have the serial number?

Client wants to upgrade his 'academic' version?

Client wants to upgrade his FCP Studio 5.1.4 to 7.x, but he's got an Academic version. Which Apple Store says they don't upgrade. Does this mean he has to buy a complete new Academic version?
My assumption is yes. But I'm always wary of my assumptions. I'm going to see if I can find the 'Academic' price listed somewhere...

Ya know... here is what it says in the license agreement... (though this is from the apple's website's list of EULAs and not specifically from a EULA from any Academic version you may have bought (the apple website says that too)) -- (wow! that was small!!)

QT MPEG-2 Playback Intel Upgrade - DVDSP4 Academic

I just received my new Mac Pro and I haven't had the chance to upgrade my PowerPC version of DVDSP4... I installed it and then noticed that I can't play any of the previously created MPEG-2 files...
I noticed that there is an update to licensed owner of DVDSP4... I tried entering my serial number and was told that it is invalid...
Am I to assume that the academic version does not qualify for the upgrade? Please tell me that is not true...

Thought I would chime in here and clear up a thing or two.
The Academic FCP Studio upgrade is not $199.00, it is $49.00 and yes you do have to send in your old disks.
The upgrade is called a crossgrade and you have to fill out a Final Cut Studio Crossgrade form as well as a copy of you educational institutions non-taxable status certificate. Mail all of this to Apple.

Now if you didn't purchase FCP Studio, just one of the Academic's, like DVD SP 4, then yes, you will have to spend $199.00 to crossgrade to the full FCP Studio suite.
