Upgrade File Conflicts (with Pacman -Syu)

When I do a pacman -Syu, I get the following error message:
checking for file conflicts...
error: the following file conflicts were found:
   ncurses:  /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen-256color: exists in filesystem
   ncurses:  /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen-256color-bce: exists in filesystem
errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Hmm.. Any ideas on how to get around this error?
Rob

I just saw the answer in the News.  Upgrade screen first.  Then upgrade ncurses.  I will give that a try.

  • Pacman upgrade - file conflict on lorcon

On last upgrade, pacman stopped because of a file conflict:
    lorcon: /usr/share/man/man3/lorcon.3.gz exists in filesystem
    What I did:
    # pacman -R lorcon-old-svn pylorcon aircrack-ng-scripts
    # pacman -S lorcon python2-pylorcon aircrack-ng-scripts
    Then everything worked out properly.
I guess theese packages were renamed, but pacman did not ask me "Do you want to replace lorcon-old-svn with lorcon?", unlike other times.
Don't know if this was the expected behavior, anyway I'm posting in case someone needs.

  • Had issue with pacman -Syu & util-linux-ng upgrade

This is mostly just a informational post in case anyone else has the same problem, or in case my problem is indicative of a pacman problem.... I hadn't been keeping on top of my upgrades for awhile, so that may be a factor.
I first upgraded pacman to the latest version, updated to use "core", then ran the full pacman -Syu .... it died halfway through because it tried to delete/move /mnt/cd and /mnt/cd was unable to be removed because it was mounted I believe... I tried to unmount it to continue, but it appears that util-linux-ng had been removed but not replaced at that point so I was missing my mount/umount commands (among others) (I'm making the assumption that whatever script was modifying /mnt/cd would have unmounted it for me if umount had been available)
here's the relevant bit of my pacman.log

seems like it's possibly unwise for pacman to remove packages it is replacing without immediately replacing them with the new one? Might it be better if replacements were treated as a single transaction or something?
thanks to bfinch for helping me figure out what was missing I was beginning to worry I'd been away so long umount had been replaced lol
    andrew.

The problem is you installed the 310 nvidia drivers, these require the nvidia-utils package version 310. But that version doesn't exist in the repositories because its already up to version 313. There is a way to do it but it will require a lot of work around's involving old packages manually. You will need the nvidia-utils 310 probably have to downgrade the xserver to xorg 1.13 and the linux kernel to 3.6. Then blacklist the packages in your pacman.conf so they are not upgraded.
Alternatiy you could just install the nvidia 313 drivers in the repositories and be done with it.

  • File conflict with xorg upgrade

I had upgraded to xorg back when it was in testing but have since removed the testing repo.  With my last pacman -Suy I am getting this error:
    xorg-server: /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled: exists in filesystem
Any ideas? Do I have to remove something?

I ended up renaming my compiled directory and running pacman -Syu again.. seems to have worked.  Hope there are no ill effects on reboot..

  • Cant upgrade with pacman -Syu

Apperantly, I'm unable to update anything using pacman -Syu
    Here is what i get
    http://pastebin.com/m5164821b
    Any suggestions?

I have this errors......my kernel version is the 2.6.21-ARCH, maybe is this the reason? How can I upgrade the kernel?
    thx

check which package owns the files with 'pacman -Qo $pathtofile'
If it is now owned by a package you can safely force the package to install with 'pacman -Sf kernel26'
If the files are owned by a package then there they are conflicting and the path to follow will be different for each situation.
If you are not sure what to do post here which package (if any) owns the files.

Thank you.  That solved my same problem as well.
But on my screen the text scrolled  by so fast that i could barely read it and I could not scroll up to read the beginning.
how can I pipe the output so that it does not scroll so fast.  i thought this was the "less" command but when i typed:
    less pacman -Syu
    or
    pacman -Syu less
I got errors in syntax.  I am a noob coming from 1 year using Ubuntu.  I have worked thru many errors to get this far in the install.
The forums where down so I was on my own and had to use trial and error and the beginner wiki.  im glad now forums back online because i never woould have figured out this klibc error on my own.

    All them belongs to kde-mod-ui-kde.
    Eg:
    bash-3.2# pacman -Qo /opt/kde/share/apps/kdeui/about/bar-bottom-left.png
    /opt/kde/share/apps/kdeui/about/bar-bottom-left.png is owned by kdemod-ui-kde 3.5.9-2
My error, not correctly removed KDEMod.
    Done:
    pacman -Rd kdemod-ui-kde
    then worked fine!
    Problem solved!
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Cannot instal xorg files - Conflict with another program.

I have a new install and set up my wireless, got pacman working good but there are a couple things that are not working. 1-cannot install powerpill, it just does not find it when i try to download it. 2 when I try to download xorg files it says there is a conflict with another program (not near my comp right now so i dont have the name of the program, i will post it later). I am more worried about getting xorg set up than powerpill. does anyone have any ideas? i am set up for fastest mirror and ran the pacman -Syu to update everything yesterday...

I am trying to install everything under xorg that comes up when you type pacman -S xorg. the error itself says that it conflicts with another program when i try to download it. it says do i want to remove program "x" but does both options still will not download. I will get the full info tonight.

  • Lib32-libgl conflict with pacman -Su command

When I attempted sudo pacman -Su I get...
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: google-earth: requires lib32-libgl
    :: steam: requires lib32-libgl
How should I deal with this conflict? Thanks.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.
    # pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: steam: requires lib32-libgl
I read up an old (and very long) thread about the same issue but nothing i found in there solved it for me. Usually the problem was that something unnecessary (like nouveau or some video drivers from the xorg package group) was installed.
This does not seem to be the case for me.
    # pacman -S lib32-libgl
    :: lib32-nvidia-libgl and lib32-nvidia-utils are in conflict

I don't see anything i could uninstall to fix this issue.
I thought for a moment that adding "IgnorePkg   = lib32-libgl"
to pacman.conf would do something but it didn't help (someone in the other thread talked about ignoring libgl)
    What can i do?

  • Ruby-cairo upgrade file conflicts [solved]

I did a 'pacman -Su' and it tried to upgrade ruby-cairo but it then bombed out due to file conflicts. If I do a 'pacman -Qu ruby-cairo' it says the package does not exist, even though I'm pretty sure I installed it in the past and hence why there are file conflicts. Should I force the upgrade or are there better ways to solve this?
Here's the output from pacman -Su

    farrel@ages ~ $ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/cairo.rb
    /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/cairo.rb is owned by ruby-rcairo 1.8.0-2
So there's ruby-rcairo (what I have installed) and ruby-cairo which is what it's trying to install. I can probably just remove ruby-rcairo and install ruby-cairo.

  • Pb with "pacman -Syu"

Just a question: does anyone ever faced a problem while doing a "pacman -Syu"?
It happened several times on my box that this command froze completly my system, just after having retrieved the database for the "current" repository.
When the problem occurs, my system is nearly completly suspended. In this situation, I can't even peform a "ps -ef". It starts to display some processes and then it hangs before finishing.
Then I try to reboot, but the shutdown hangs too while trying to terminate still running processes.
Each time after a crash and a reboot, I can see from /var/log/errors the following entry:
Mar 15 18:11:05 pokemon kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000
    0003
    Mar 15 18:11:05 pokemon kernel: *pde = 00000000
    Mar 15 18:40:35 pokemon kernel: *pde = 00000000
Hum... this log is not very helpful!
Does someone already experienced the same problem?
Right now, my only hypothesis is that the problem can be linked to the libtar library used by pacman, but I'm not really sure of it.
The point is that pacman uses the 1.2.5 release, and the latest available one is now the 1.2.11, which corrects lots of bugs. So, I will made a try with it.
Anyway, I've instrumented my pacman binary with lots of "printf" everywhere in the "sync" code (especially around calls to libtar functions) to try to find out which is the instruction that generates that evil crash...
Unfortunately it does not dump a core file, it only hangs... so it's quite difficult to investigate
It occurs about once a week. It happens since the very first day I installed Arch (4 months ago). At that time, I was thinking the problem was with my kernel or something with my configuration... but I have to admit that, to date, my system never crashed, excepted during "pacman -Syu" operations...

    I have the same problem
the HW config is IBM Netvista Celeron 1300
I checked dmesg and it said that it panic/ed in kjournal
then I rebuild the kernel / 2.4.20 with ac2 patch (PKGBUILD needs some tweeking)
and it seems more stable now.
It is strange that I install Arch 0.4 the day before on some other PC and it is really stable.
That PC is Intel P4 2.4 (intel board)
and I wanted to mention that install also seg/faulted many times before succed with a bare bone BASE packages.

  • How NOT to upgrade a package while pacman -Syu

This may sound confusing, but I am trying to keep my system up to date with the latest software, but I do not want to upgrade one package or else I am 110% sure I will break my system.
So when I run pacman -Syu, it tells me that I have 4 packages to upgrade, one being the package I do not want to update. So far the only way I found to upgrade my system but still keeping it unbroken is having to manually install all theremaing upgrades using
    pacman -S name_of_packages_that_need_to_be_upgraded.
which can be a long list (3 in this case), especially if I don't do it for awhile.
My question is, is there a way to stop pacman from trying to always upgrade the one package I do not want and upgrade all the rest just like its supposed to?
I have not found a way to do this, but I am not fluent enough with the package manager to know if there is a command for this task. If there isn't such a command, then how hard would it be to add this functionality? I know this kinda goes against the arch way, but so does manually upgrading each package individually. KISS
Any help would be appreciated and I can clearly understand if this can't be resolved.

I will add, I put this under the general options part of pacman.conf for anyone who is confused that is reading this. Great tip this one here is. One more question though? would u put multiple packages on one line or would u add a ignorpkg = for every package u don't want upgraded?

  • Bash-completion upgrade conflicts with pacman

pacman warned me that /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/makepkg would be overwritten.
pacman -Oo said then that it's part of bash-completion 1.99-1, but there's already bash-completion 1.99-2 that hasn't any more included that file cause now as it seems, the file move into the new pacman package.
    https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … 50dbc12ba0
So following process to not corrupt anything:
    1) Move the file out of the way:
    # mv /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/makepkg /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/makepkg.bak
    2) Upgrade pacman
    # pacman -S pacman
    3) Upgrade bash-completion (this step will remove the file)
    # pacman -S bash-completion
    4) Reinstall pacman again, to not loose the file.
    # pacman -S pacman
    5) Now, you can remove the backup.
    # rm -f /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/makepkg.bak

Did you source it or logout/login? It doesn't magically do that itself.
    . /etc/bash_completion
both, i reload it with source ~/.bashrc  and later i logged out/in
