Upgrade freezes X

After yesterday's upgrade X  froze, funny it didn't happen straight off, only after a while. Tried downgrading the kernel, no result, but back to normal after downgrading xorg-server and xorg-utils (NOT xorg-server-utils). Which of the two is the culprit i don't know.

I'm also having problems with Xorg.
Updated today the following packages;

[2010-03-13 11:24] Updating font cache... done.

[2010-03-13 11:24] upgraded xorg-fonts-misc (1.0.0-4 -> 1.0.1-1)
[2010-03-13 11:24] upgraded xorg-server (1.7.5.901-1 -> 1.7.5.901-2)
[2010-03-13 11:24] upgraded xorg-utils (7.5-1 -> 7.6-1)
And now I can't start X at all.
When I enter startx or xinit, I get a whole bunch of error messages that scroll to fast to read (and I can't figure out how to capture them either... any clues)? Before getting the following
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
When I go to downgrade my Xorg packages(xorg-server and xorg-utils) to previous versions using the following commands;
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.7.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
And likewise for xorg-utils, I get a bunch of error messages when "checking for file conflicts..." about files (mainly header files) already existing in the filesystem, followed by "errors occurred, no packages were upgraded".
I'm not sure what to do next, can anyone help?

  • Memory upgrade freezes iBook G3

    Hello,
I just recently upgraded to Tiger 10.4.6 on my G3/800 mhz and the system works fine with the standard 256 RAM (128/128). However, when I installed a 512 RAM, the system would randomly freeze or just not start up at all. When I replaced the 128 stick, everything is back to normal and runs fine.
The system recognizes the 512 stick which places my total RAM at 640 MB.
Can you please expalin why this occurring.
    Thank you,
    Bryan

Hi, Bryan. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you got a bad (or incompatible) RAM
module. Ask the vendor for a replacement.
    Hi,
    I purchaced the 512 MB stick from MacMall.com. It's a 512MB PC100 SODIMM.
It said it was compatible for iBook/Pwrbook G3.
Before I send it back, I just wanted to make sure it was the right one.
Thank you for the for the feedback.

  • Software Upgrade 'Freezing'

I am trying to load latest software upgrade from Apple. It downloads OK, albeit slowly, but, after restarting IMAC, it seems to freeze almost immediately after commencing installation during initializing system).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be happening and what I might do to fix the problem?
    Many thanks...Scotty

    HI Scotty,
Have you checked to see how much free space is on the boot disk? Right or Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click Get Info. Next to: General click the black arrow so it faces down. You will see: Capacity and Available Never allow the available disk space to fall below 10%, 15% is better.
    Try here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2383
Make sure and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER any software updates!
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Free upgrade freezes on step 3

My MacBook Air was bought on July 9th, 2012, so it qualifies for the free upgrade, but when i start the request process, the webpage begins to reload again and again on step 3, which is the upload of the proof of purchase. How can i prevent this from happening?

Still no joy on why this happens, and nearly a year on. Why don't this system work? Why are there so many people having problems with this crap yet no apple support or solution? I have today discovered a few more tracks that this happens to.
I have sat all day today importing some of my cd collection into iTunes. The tracks that stick on step 3 (18 in total) are say, one track from one cd, two from another and so on. All are with in match requirements/criteria as the other tracks from the same cd uploaded fine. I've had this problem before and it was track size etc, but not this time.
I have removed all 18 tracks and tried to do one track at a time. Every single one of the 18 causes match to freeze on step 3. And what's worse is when it does this, my broadband drops from 19.5mps to 1.56mps and slows the whole house down (well, two kids sat on Xbox live moaning like they just lost a limb or something).
I don't want to have to delete the odd tracks from albums etc just to make my iTunes work. It should just work. Skip the faulty tracks etc and/or notify me. Not just freeze and lock everything up, slowing down everything and saying 'sod it'. Or is 'sod it' apples attitude now they got all their money? It seems the same feeling is spreading across the board as more and more people are getting fed up with the apple 'way', product, no support, cost's and attitude etc etc. it's so frustrating :-(

  • New ITunes upgrade freezing up program

Why is Apple providing us with a new I Tunes update that completely freezes up the program? The only way to fix the problem is by completely uninstalling I Tunes and re-installing, which is not pleasant. From the amount of mail received so far, it seems to be a wide-ranging problem. Why not recall the upgrade until it is safe to use.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

  • 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade freezed on apple start up screen.

I just upgraded my os 10.3 to 10.4 via an independent copy (not bundled with any computer)...every thing seemed to go well, except that when it restarts it freezes on the gray apple start up screen. I've both verified permissions and repaired the harddrive with the installation disk and even tried reinstalling os 10.4 again,...with the same result.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Freezing my computer since upgrading, freezing my computer since upgrading

i have snow leopard and installed iphoto 11. Now my computer freezes especially when i have my iphone plugged in

Regardless of what Intego claims, test to see if it works better without their software. If it does, then I'd submit a support request to them. Firewall software by the way has one serious weakness, and that unlike firewall hardware, the software can more easily be manipulated than those settings on a hardware firewall.
    Clam XAV is here:
    http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/
Just to note, there are currently no Mac OS X viruses in the wild. You are primarily preventing yourself from passing on viruses to PC users. Of course you can also do this by proactively only accepting e-mail attachments from people you know have no risk of having put viruses on their attachments in the first place.

  • IOS8 upgrade freezes App Store

SSince I upgrade to iOS 8, I cannot get into App Store and search for any apps. It sits at blank screen. App updates are fine, but, that is the only part of App Store working for me on my iPhone 5S. Any solution?

How is this offered update getting to you?
As long as you have iPhoto 9.1.5 one your Mac and running OK you can ignore any repeated offers that come your way.

  • 10.7.6 upgrade freezing

I have tried downloading and installing the latest OS version 10.6.7. It downloads fine and commences installing and writing the files but "stops" when almost completed and remains there (I left it for 4 hours today hoping it might finish). The same happened when I upgraded to 10.6.6 but somehow it completed writing - I can't recall what I did if anything!
Has anyone else had this problem? or, better still, does anyone know hoe to fix it?

Why? Software Update works perfectly fine for me and all of the users I help to support. So we have had no problems with it whatsoever.

  • Why is your new upgrade freezing upon install in win7

you sent me a popup about firefox upgrade. I elected to upgrade. it downloaded fine in ie11. saved the file. installed firefox browser. It pops up in a responsive window with a white window about 300px x 200px midway down the page with a check box and a question mark. It has a progress bar and nothing gets processed. it just sits there! The image doesnot show the white box which I uploaded if it ever stops buffering!

this sound phishy - firefox updates are handled by an internal updater and you shouldn't need to manually download and execute any exe files...
you might want to run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].
[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]
if this doesn't resolve the issue please try to manually delete the firefox program folder (usually located at c:\program files (x86)\mozilla firefox) and reinstall it with a fresh copy downloaded from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

  • Early Termination/6 Month freeze on a new contract

How can I validate what the local Verizon rep stated to me.  Asked how much to terminate my contract early, I have 5 months remaining on a smart phone and have 2 other phones still under contract, price to early terminate was $160.  The proceeded to say I wanted to early terminate and request a new upgrade for a discounted phone and was told the Verizon prohibits this for a 6 month period and the upgrade freeze is on all phones.  I have read and re-read the early termination contract and see no mention of any freezes.  And besides, how could they do that if I met the requirements for early termination, I paid for my phone.  Any ideas how to get this resolved?

I respect every reply to my post and a newbie to the verizon forum, I asked a question hoping to hear of a real example of another person with first hand knowledge of a freeze on a new line or phone after an early termination or being allowed to do this.  again, thank you to anyone that took the time to reply but it seems the replies so far are opinion.  I asked a verizon rep to clarify what I was told and was told that I could feasibly early terminate and subscribe to a new line and a discount withoutt a waiting period.  So whats false churn?
    thank you

  • OPEN DNS not supported by APPLE?

I understand from talking to someone who is an apple service provider that Apple does not support the use of OPEN DNS. He told me was able to upgrade to Safari 5 with no problems using his default settings. I have been fine since using OPEN DNS. Prior to this, I was experiencing all the problems most of you have seem to have been experiencing since the Safari 5 upgrade (freezing, etc).
Should I try to delete the Safari 5 I have and download a new one? It sounds like people are still having the same issues. Why wouldn't Apple support OPEN DNS? My understanding is that it is perfectly safe to do so?

I understand from talking to someone who is an apple service provider that Apple does not support the use of OPEN DNS
    Rubbish.
Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:

  • Upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 - Problems freezing/spinning gear

    Hello and Happy Holidays,
I have an 867mHz Titanium G4 Powerbook w/1gig memory, and the stock 30 gig hd. Recently, I upgraded my OS from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. Since then, I have had weekly freeze-ups and perpetual spinning gears at startup.
Specifically, the freeze-ups occur after the computer has been asleep over night (no joke intended) and awakened. The only way out of this freeze is to restart the powerbook, which then leads to a continuous spinning gear. After this, it becomes necessary to reboot from the Tiger cd, and repair permissions. Upon concluding this step, the computer is operational once again.
Significantly, in 10.3.9 the computer ran beautifully with nary a problem, so I must conclude that the problem is Tiger–not the Tibook. Anyone with some useful thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Glenn
    PowerBook G4 867 mHz 1gig ram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

A Tiger upgrade over Panther hasn't been the best way to go.
Clone your exisiting boot drive to a blank external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (visit their forums)
Next do a Erase w/Zero option your internal and reinstall Tiger fresh (c boot from installer cd and elect Disk Utility from the installer menu)
Update completely and then install Tiger ready apps from fresh sources.
Aviod using Migration Assistant, it misses copy protection and other things, copies blindly, take the time to clean house properly.
Install files from the clone and when your set then erase the clone and make a new clone from your optimal OS install.
Spotlight and Dashboard will take some CPU here and there and is easily disabled using software by searching Macupdate.com
Tiger 10.4.1 has tested to perform better than Panther 10.3.9 in User Interface and CPU (on some machines)
