Upgrade from 10.2 to Tiger 10.4.11

I don't want to upgrade to Leopard. I want Tiger 10.4.11 to run on my PowerBook G4 17inch (running on 10.2)...
(This computer is not on line.)
Is Tiger 10.4.11 still on the market to purchase? Can I take my PB G4 into an Apple store and have Tiger 10.4.11 installed???

Apple Phone Sales might have some copies still for sale for $129. Call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
Otherwise, eBay might be your best bet. You will have the best chance with a retail copy of the Tiger install DVD, which is black with a big X on it. A grey-coloured Tiger install disc that shipped as original equipment with a different Mac model might work as well, and will be cheaper, but going that route comes with several caveats (see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1976068)

If not, you are using the wrong disc.
Does it say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM?
If it does, you are using the wrong disc.
Since your Mac is compatible with Snow Leopard, unless you have some pressing need to only be running Leopard, and not Snow Leopard, it is cheaper to upgrade to Snow Leopard with the regular retail box for Snow Leopard from the Apple Store. You do not need to buy the Box Set, nor do you need to buy Leopard to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
If you need Leopard for something not compatible in Snow Leopard, call Apple Support as they may still have the retail Leopard available. The online store does not, and only a few used and refurbished Mac shops still have the retail one available.

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 'Tiger' to Leopard

Hi, I have a mac running on 10.4.11 and someone bought my daughter 'iLife 09' as a Christmas Present but we cannot install it unless we have Leopard Software. Is there anyway to 'upgrade' to Leopard without having to go out and buy a whole new Snow Leopard Software package. I took the iLife 09 back to the apple store to get a refund - because I thought I might as well just buy the new Snow Leopard as it is included in this - but as it had been opened (my daughter tried to install it) they would not give a refund. So if I can upgrade at a relatively low cost to Leopard, then I can install iLife so it won't have gone to waste. Can anyone advise? Apple told me to ring one of the London stores and ask for the 'Archive' department, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it is possible to upgrade online. Look forward to hearing from .... someone ... ?! Thanks. Shona

Alternatively you can purchase the Apple Boxed Set at $169 USD that contains iLife, iWork, Leopard, and Snow Leopard.
AFAICT, the boxed set doesn't contain a separate Leopard installer, only Snow Leopard, which may not work on the iMac in question. Apple's phone sales is the only Apple outlet for the retail Leopard installer—$129 USD.

It's too bad that it would violate Apples TOS if you bought the US$30 Snow Leopard upgrade intended for Leopard users and installed it over Tiger.
    That's not true. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2304131

  • Upgrading from 9.0 to tiger

how can i do a clean install and save programs installed (photoshop, illustrator, quark, etc) i don't have the disc's but they are legal copies...i bought the mac at church sale and want to upgrade but i want to use the pre-loaded software...any way i can make copies of the programs to cd and then reinstall (and then keep as a backup)...help, i am a mac newbie...and is tiger the best option for the g4.

Looks like you've got a Sawtooth (AGP) or Mystic (Gigabit) G4 (To tell the two apart, pull down the access panel and look for an internal FireWire port on the motherboard; Sawtooth systems have it; Mystics don't.)
You'll need firmware 4.2.8f1 in either case, which is accessible using the link given to you earlier in this thread.
The good news: you can install X right alongside 9 if you want, and they won't mind each other's company on the same volume. Your hard-fought apps? SAFE! Even better: patch to 9.2.2 and then install Tiger so you can draw from all those OS 9 apps while you run OS X.
You might benefit from a RAM upgrade to 1 GB if you plan on using OS X for the better part of your Mac esperience. Graphics card and CPU upgrades may help get more life from this venerable war horse of the Mac universe, but only the brave or foolhardy would have the chutzpah and the cash to attempt such feats.
On stock versions of the Sawtooth or Mystic, Tiger may not be the best choice on account of feature limitations, but with Leopard in ihe chute, it will be the safest, as Apple will patch it until 10.6/11/whatever succeeds it.

  • Upgrading from 10.1 to Tiger. Best way to keep OS9 and delete 10.1 after

I have just bought Tiger to upgrade my current g4 10.1.3 set up. I'd like to do an erase and intall on the disk ( I understand that you can't upgrade 10.1 to 10.4 anyway), and I would also like to have OS9 installed on my machine.
My software restore CDs are my only copy of 9.2.2, which I am warned will erase my drive when used.
Should I use these disks first to perform an erase and fresh install of OS9, then install Tiger afterwards ?
If so, what would be the correct way to remove the restored 10.1 system after installing Tiger ?
Is there another way to re- install OS9 after installing Tiger without erasing the disk ?
    any help very much appreciated
    Simo Bogdanovic

    Hello Simo.
Perform an Erase & Install with the Tiger retail install package and afterwards, you can install OS 9.2.2 from your restore CDs. Using the restore CDs to re-install 9.2.2 after installing Tiger will not erase the hard drive unless you erase the drive using Disk Utility from the restore CD.
Check Mac OS X: Reinstalling Mac OS 9 or recovering from a software restore selecting Installation of Mac OS 9 after Mac OS X for instructions.

  • Upgrading from 10.39 to Tiger

I have a G3 (500 MHz) imac that I would like to upgrade
    to Tiger.
Tiger does not seem to come with iPhoto and iMovie. They seem to now come in the iLife box. However, from the side of the iLife box it looks like my processor is too old and that I can not
use the new versions of the iLife programs.
    If I use the
upgrade option from the Tiger installation disk will my
old applications like iMovie and iPhoto still be around (and work) or does the
upgrade installation wipe them out or will they be non functional under Tiger.
Also will my old classic environment still be there.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
iTunes at least is not as hefty in its system requirements as other elements of iLife. That you can download free after updating to Tiger.
Your existing applications and Classic environment that are not part of the update won't be affected by the update if it goes well.
To make sure it goes well, I've written this FAQ:

  • Upgrading from ibook g4 to Tiger

I recently decided to help my girlfriend upgrade her ibook g4's OS to Tiger, since she's running 10.3.9 and can't update to the newest version of iTunes. I made sure her computer met all the necessary technical requirements as per apple's website, then proceeded to buy the OS on ebay. When the disks came I noticed that they read "Macbook install disk", but since apple's website hadn't made any differentiation between a macbook and an ibook on its' requirements page I didn't think too much of it. I backed the computer up and then attempted to install the new OS. After shutting down and restarting, the normal grey apple screen came on, but after a couple seconds a large display appearead which read "Your computer needs to be restarted, etc.", and over this screen was all sorts of fragmented code, including a message saying a driver couldn't be found, blah blah blah. I figured this meant wrong type of install disk. Does anyone know if I can even find a version of this more recent OS which will work on an ibook?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Upgrade from Mac OS X Tiger to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro that is currently running Max OS X TIger 10.4.11 to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I bought the Mac Box Set. Do I loose all the programmes and files, that I have on my computer while upgrading? Do I have to do a backup of everything before upgrading? How do I best do a backup of everything? Do I loose all the programmes e.g. Final Cut and all the projects that I have in them on my computer now while upgrading? maybe that#s a stupid question, but thanks for your help.

Do I loose all the programmes and files, that I have on my computer while upgrading?
Not unless you choose to erase the drive as part of the process.
Do I have to do a backup of everything before upgrading?
    No, but you should anyway.
How do I best do a backup of everything?
Use a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the existing system to another drive or partition.

  • Upgrade from SNow Leopard to Tiger question.

I have Max OS X 10.6.8 with Intel Core Duo. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Can I upgrade to Tiger even though I do not have Inter Core 2 Duo?

Take time and read many discussions about Lion first.  New concepts like can make life interesting:
No physical install disks, but downloaded over internet when you need to reinstall
A hidden Recovery Partition that must be protected during customizations of disk partitions
    PPC applcations no longer run
Scrolling is "backwards" to what SL has because it behaves more like iPads than computers
Lion-original machines cannot run any OS prior to Lion, so no "SL partition for running PPC applications"
I am not saying "do not upgrade", just "read first".  Those who run Lion will help you with any Lion issues.
As to upgrading the hardware ... good luck with that.  Look on "ifixit.com" or Google it, but I have built PCs (installed the CPUs myself) and it can be trickybusiness.

  • Upgrading from 10.3 to Tiger 10.4.6

I'm trying to install 10.4.6 on my iBook G4. When I put in INstall Disc 1 I'm getting a long message the top & tail of are:-
"No debugger configured............Darwin Kernel...panic. We are hanging here...".
It effectively freezes the machine and I've got to reboot to get the Tiger disk out.
I've got 9GB of free disk space.
Any ideas as to how I can get Tiger installed?

    Does 10.3 still work?
At what pint does that message happen?
9GB of free space is really pushing the minimum limit, I wouldn't try it at all with so little free space. Though an finished install may only require 4-5GB, temporary files & Virtual Memory may use/need 2-4 times that during the install.

  • IMac Slot Loader Problems Upgrading from os 9 to Tiger

The firmware is up to date i know that i checked it before starting the install. I have gotten rid of all third party ram and still that is all i get i am so lost and confused on this one. I am about ready to give it the parking lot slide. Anyway thanks for the help but we are closer but close doesnt count except for in horse shoes, hand grenades, and atom bombs.

  • Error message when trying to upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.5

Hope somebody can help. I'm fairly recent to macs as have always built and used pcs. Am having trouble upgrading from current pantherOS to Tiger. Bought emac with upgrade disc provided by seller. Disc was gray labelled emac. Installation went fine and everything was proceeding to point it finished writing files, configuring installation, and running installer scripts and then it quit with message: error installing software. Try reinstalling.
Tried reinstallation and same thing occurred. then Tried complete erase and new installation. Same error message.
Came to discussion group searching for something I might be doing wrong. Decided maybe disc was wrong even though it specified emac which is what I am using. Bought generic install disc that would install on any G3/4/5 with minimum specs per hardware which system met.Installation proceeded as it was going to install same as emac disc. This is normal full install disc for generic installation.
All installations screens came up and installation proceeded to same point as before and then quit with same message: error installing software/ Try reinstalling.
Have removed ram to original 256MB and tried. No luck. I am using external DVD for installation of DVD and wonder if this is problem but in the forums external DVD seems to work alright. Can reinstall old Panther OS without any problem
Ran hardware test and everything checked okay.
Should I just forget about upgrading and use 10.3.9 but would really like to know what is wrong. thanks. Rick

  • Please help, need to upgrade from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4 Tiger on imac g3 400 dv

Hello, I would greatly appreciate assistance to upgrade my operating system from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4.10. I have gotten the firmware upgrade installed to 4.1.9. Can anyone tell me what else I need to upgrade to have this computer able to install Tiger 10.4, on an imac g3 400 dv slot loading.....
Right now when I try to install the disc 10.4 using the option key at restart, it wont load the install disc. Any help would be appreciated , thank u in advance!!!!!!!

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....
I know I meet all the requirements for tiger , except for the ram which apple says I need 256 mg,
But I was referring to any firmaware upgrades or bios upgrades or any of those type of programming upgrades to ready it for tiger, I know I installed the 4.19, and went from os 9.0 to its current 9.22, I think that alone was 5 upgrades. I think I might be missing an upgrade or maybe not. I will run the utility u posted and thank u for that.....
Apple told me that I can installl tiger 10.4.10 on this computer.
The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have
Oh and it does open the files in 9.22, it does mount, and it does have folders,
Thank u for ur help as I progress to ultimately saving this imac....
    many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What is the BEST way to upgrade from Leopard to Tiger?

My current set-up is noted below. The main "Macintosh HD" is 250 GB's in size and is fairly filled up with programs and plug-ins. (I own Logic Studio 8 and Final Cut Pro Studio 2, as well as Adobe's CS4 Web Premium Suite.)
Prior to doing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, I wish to ensure that I get back to my current set-up should any problems arise. Off hand, I can think of a couple of options to chose from to ensure a proper backup :
    1) Cloning the current disk drive on another drive in the Mac Pro prior to the upgrade.
    2) Purchasing a new, larger disk drive for the Leopard upgrade and safely storing the original drive containing Tiger.
Maybe there are more ways to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard with a dependable "back-up"??
No matter how I ensure a back-up of my current drive, I will install Leopard as a clean install.
What would be the BEST way to do the upgrade with proper back-up?
Thank you in advance for your time and input.
    Ted

    I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
