Upgrade from 10.39 to 10.4 problem on a Power Mac G4

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.39 to 10.4 using the Tiger install DVD .
- When I d insert the dvd, it immediatle pops it back out..
- I tried transfering the dvd data on to a usb drive. When I did this, I cilicked on the "install icon" get the installation screen, click "restart" and the machine restarts in 10.39 with no installation screen.
- With the USB drive, from system prefs > startup disk, I am given the option of 10.4, but when I select it and hit restart, nothing happens.
Any help is appreciated!!

Hi rickHutch80;
Your G4 is not capable of booting from a USB drive hence when the reboot starts it con only find the disk with Panther on it as the only bootable device. You need to use either an internal DVD drive or an external Firewire DVD drive so that the G4 can boot from it.

I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not sync more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync process.  The hard drive has been upgraded, it has a new logicboard (with 128mb RAM), new housing, battery, hold / headphone jack.  Basically the only original parts are the bezel, click wheel, screen, and data ribbons. Have attempted the 3Rs and have also tried to isolate potentially corrupt audio files and remove them, but this did not seem to be the primary cause.  The sync failure consistently happens at just under a 1000 songs (5.4gb) and then it starts to error (-69) any song after that.  Your advise would be enthusiastically received.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • Hi i upgrade from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am getting no sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

  • How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

If your Mini shipped with OS X 10.7 Lion, then it was considered a 2011 build model, or before.
The Mini 2012 model, is considered a Late 2012, & the last one where RAM could be upgraded.
And it shipped with Mountain Lion 10.8, which is a fairly OK system if one had older software.
(However mine shipped in Dec 2014, with Mavericks 10.9.0, and was built in January 2014.)
There were a few different build versions of Late 2012 Mac Mini, the i5 or i7 processor,
in dual-core or quad-core, and some CTO or built-to-order versions with other specs.
You can buy Mountain Lion from online Apple Store, & use a download code emailed to you to
get the Mt. Lion 10.8 from Apple Servers; this would be about it, since Mavericks isn't available.
So hopefully that is an option you can exercise; in addition the computer may prefer more RAM.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Do i have to upgrade from version 10.6.8 to use icloud on my mac book air?

do i have to upgrade from version 10.6.8 to use icloud on my mac book air?

I'm afraid so. The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • HOw Do I upgrade from Tiger 4.11 to 5.6 on an I Mac 5.1 (Mid 2006) Intel core2 Duo?

How do  I upgrade from 4.11 (Tiger) on an I Mac 5.1 (mid2006)
to 4.6 (Snwoleopard)? I have an Intel core 2 duo  processor
with 2.16 GHz speed and 1GB RAM .
Can I just buy a disc and install- do I need to backup everything from my harddisk
    and reinstall the whole stuff?
Isw Lion (4.7) an option - or do I need more Ram?

You can but the Snow Leopard install disk from the Apple on-line storre for $29 (US) and install that on your machine.  You would be better off increasing the memory from 1 GB to 2 GB.  It is always advisable to backup your data to an external hard drive before updating an operating system just as a precaution.
For Lion you need at least 2 GB ram, 4 GB is better, and an Intel Core 2 Duo or better cpu, which you say you have.

  • Hey, I'm fixing up a Power Mac G5 for a friend, he gave me a Cinema HD 30' display to use with it. My problem is, the Power Mac G5 doesn't have a place where I can plug in one of the display's cords. the cord is called a "DC power (24.5 V)"

So the Cinema HD's DVI goes in fine, I don't remember what video card is in the computer, all I know is it's Nvideo, it's old, only like 256MB, but does have two DVI ports. Anyway, then the display's firewire and USB can go in. But there's this weird thing, had to do some research to figure out what the connector/cord is called. it's the size of a USB, rectangular with oval sides. It's called a "DC power (24.5 V)" I'm like, what the heck is this thing? it won't go into the computer anywhere, I'm assuming I need some sort of adapter?? Help please, if I need an adapter or video card, links would be extremely helpful.
    Best regards,
    Poly

I don't believe so, I have a DVI to ADC adapter I was messing with, my DVI from the display plugs into the adapter, then i grap the adapter's ADC connector, and it does not go into my Power mac G5's video card. So that confirms that the display is DVI, and works with my DVI video card perfectly. It's just the one wire/connector that apple calls the "DC power (24.5 V)" that won't go in anywhere. Basically the display has a DVI connector, firewire connector, and USB, which all go into my Power mac G5 fine. However, it has another wire with a connector that won't go in anywhere, from what I've read off the teach specs of my Cinema HD 30' that final connector/wire is listed as "DC power (24.5 V)"
So my problem is with that. I have NO idea what it does, or goes into. When I google "DC power (24.5 V) Apple" it comes up with weird images none of which have that connector. So I'm just so. Confused.

    Now the Problem:
in the last time I ear that the G4 after clicking on the Login Window on SLEEP is often gone to shutdown. The last week I made this check and the G4 gone to shutdown and after x seconds again ON without external intervention. Was this not a real shutdown (the light on the Power button was NOT PULSING)
    What I have just done:
I resetted trought booting + OF all Boot parameters, I made the CUDA reset, I bought a new PMU Battery and now (all disconnected also the HDs) when I push the Power Botton the Fan TRIES to go but after a microsecond is cutted off power. The last time, while trying to take care of my G4, that it had made a little of work was tonight WHITOUT PMU/Battery I made login, I have seen that THE DATE WAS RIGHT (without PMU-Battery !!!) I just choose the right Display Conf, then I started DiskUtility first CHECK Disk and then I was looking for solutions @apple Support on another machine PUFF the G4 has gone OFF and ON and OFF than I unplugged the POWER cable.
Now I don t know any more, suggestions ?

    Massimo,
I'm having a bit of a problem with the translation. I think what you're saying is that when you attempt startup, the Mac initially gets only a momentary bit of power, with the red LED lighting briefly, then shutting off, after which nothing happens. Occasionally, the Mac starts to the point where the hard drives begin to spin up, but then they, too, shut down. You would like to try booting to the install disc with the drives disconnected, but can't get far enough along in the startup process to open the optical drive tray.
If what I've said above is correct, you can open your optical drive tray manually. Use a fingernail to open the dust cover of the optical drive and look for a tiny hole on the face of the drive below the tray. If you insert a paperclip straight into this hole and push it firmly, the drive tray will begin to eject. When it comes out far enough to grasp with your fingers, pull it out to extend it fully. Insert the disc and manually push the tray back in. Boot to disc by depressing the "c" key at startup and holding it down until the turning grey cog wheel appears.
To attempt to get the Mac to start, perhaps you should try completely de-energizing and resetting it. Try this, (just leave your hard drives disconnected):
Disconnect everything externally except the power cord.
Touch your finger to a metal slot cover on the back of the Mac as a static discharge precaution, then disconnect the power cord.
    Remove the battery.
Depress and hold the front power button for a five-count.
Fully depress the PMU for a five-count.
Take a thirty-minute break to insure that the internal capacitors are completely discharged.
Reconnect the power cord, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, leaving the battery out.
Attempt startup to the install disc.
Any luck? If so, reinsert the battery, connect the hard drives and boot to disc, launching Disk Utility and running Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Check the Startup Disk option in the Installer menubar to insure the OS X system on your startup drive is still selected. Then quit the Installer to restart normally to the hard drive. If successful, you can then check the preference files for sleep-wake problem that it seems you were having, if I understood correctly.
BTW - When you get stuck in a situation where the Mac won't respond and you have difficulty powering down, try to avoid pulling the power plug, which can corrupt your files and drive directory if the drive is writing data. Instead, try the restart button if you have to force a complete shutdown. If that fails to work after holding it in for a few seconds, then try the power button. If it still won't power down after holding in the power button, then release it and immediately depress the restart button, which usually works. Pull the power plug on a running Mac only as a last resort. In any event, after any sudden shutdown, it's prudent practice to initially boot back to your Tiger install disc and run Repair Disk on the startup volume. If it isn't handy, then boot to Safe Mode by depressing the shift key at the next startup, which will force a file system check of the startup volume, which is like running Repair Disk without being able to see the results. Another way is to boot to single-user mode (depress & hold cmd+"s" at startup) and run fsck, where you'll be able to see the results of the drive repair.

  • On a Mac, Just upgraded from Lightroom 4, to 5. Problems with Catalog transfer.

So I did the upgrade version of Lightroom 5 from 4.  I did the catalog transfer to move all of my images over from lightroom 4 to 5.  But now when I click on any of my old images (from a lightroom 4 catalog) in lightroom 5, I get an error message that says Lighroom has a problem reading the images.  Last night I tried to export from lightroom 5 to my desktop and it did not work with the same error message coming up.  Help!!!  What am I (did I) doing wrong?

-Once I put the disc in I followed the procedures to upload LR5.  This was successful.  The first time I opened LR5 I was prompted to transfer my old LR4 catalogs to LR5 which I did.
-Now when I click on any image, once I click away, in the lower scroll bar of images an exclamation mark in a small circle.  When you click on the exclamation mark this message appears "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.  You will not be able to make adjustments to the photo."  This happens to every image I click on.

    Byron,
You should not have any problems when you upgrade your OS. Depending on what driver versions you have for that hardware, you may want to go ahead an upgrade your drivers anyway, though. The drivers for these devices are all available for free from our website at:

Try that and let me know if you have any trouble.

  • Upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard - multiple problems

I have a MacPro 4.1 (Mid2009) 2x2.26 quad-core w/ 8gb ram. My previous OS was 10.5.8 Leopard. I purchased the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard upgrade disk, performed the upgrade install, then installed the latest updates from Apple to 10.6.6.
    Now the following problems occur:
    1) I can't make a folder of alias's from my Applications folder. They all show up as gray squares with the text name below them. Opening the folder brings the infamous 'rainbow beachball of death' and I have to relaunch the Finder a minimum of twice to four times, at which point all the aliases then appear as normal icons.
    2) My generic e-Sata controller card is completely ignored by the OS. System profiler "sees it", but nothing connected to it will mount.
    3) My Matrox O2 Rack unit successfully installed, as I was able to upres VOB files via Premiere CS5 and output that upres to a BlackMagic Decklink card using Final Cut Pro as the capture software - both running within in the one MacPro. On this initial install it did work quite successfully. The next day, however, after turning the MacPro on, the OS reported that the Matrox O2 host connector box was an unknown Network connection and prompted me for Network configuration!
Sounds to me like some OS firmware/chipset abnormalities. But what to test and where????
    - Scott

Maybe not. Start by doing this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Get a utility such as TinkerTool System or Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner and AppleJack. For the former clear all user, system, and font caches. For the latter install according to documentation then follow instructions on using AppleJack.
Next, boot into safe mode. See how that goes. Note that wireless and all third-party extensions are disabled in safe mode. So your eSATA card and Matrox device will not work if they require proprietary drivers.
Also, create a new user account. Log into the new account and see how that goes. This will not disable wireless or third-party drivers.

  • Upgrading from iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4 problems!  Help!!

My uncle sent me his old iPhone 4 since he got the 4S.  I currently have an iPhone 3Gs.  However, when I restore the iPhone 4 from the backup of my 3Gs, my number won't transfer from the 3Gs to the iPhone 4!  What do I do?

No I didn't.  I figured since my uncle upgraded to his iPhone 4S, his number would be gone from this sim card he sent with the phone.  His phone service is gone, but the sim card still identifies with his number, and when I try to restore the phone from my backup, EVERYTHING transfers over, except the number.  Is there a way to wipe the sim card clean, maybe?

  • Upgrading from photoshop elements 4 to 10 problems

From being a happy user of photo elements 4  I had to upgrade as Win7 64 bits could not handle Elements 4.
I wish I never had done this as since then I have nothing but troubles and spend so much time trying to
figure out why tagged photo's I know I have don't show up. Sometimes they do and on the next startup in one occasion only 10
percent is shown. This is absolutely unacceptable for an organizer.
One is more or less obliged to upgrade as reorganizing  8000 plus files with  another program would
