Upgrade from 10.5.4 to 10.5.8 crashes. Have verified permissions and HDD
Context: combo update to 10.5.8 from 10.5.4 via Software Update
The installation screen comes up (picture of the universe in the background) and the installation progresses up to the first g in the word configure on the screen every time we try to get it to install itself. Leaving the computer over night, it will still stay at this extend of progression.
I've verified the permissions (they are ok) and checked the hard drive (ok as well). I've done everything on the list in the (long) generic post that gets plonked on the forums in response to similar questions to this except for the downloading of the file directly and trying to install it. Is that my only option from here?
I also highly doubt that 3rd party software would be interfering with the installation as this is my parent's PC and it has next to nothing installed on it.

The updater downloaded via Software Update is likely to be a tailored update, not the full "combo" update.

I have just upgraded from a Macbook to a Macbook Air. I have been using a iomega external hard drive for Time Machine, which use a Firewire. However, Macbook Air's do not have a Firewire port and i cannot find an adaptor anywhere. Can anyone help?? Thanks
There has never been a reliable firewire ---> USB adapter suitable for external high speed storage. This was a major issue when the MacBooks lost the firewire port a number of years ago (Apple subsequently brought it back).
The only high speed port on the Air is the ThunderBolt port. There are external ThunderBolt drive options out there, but they're somewhat more expensive than traditional USB/FireWire options. -
After upgrading from acrobat 9.5 to XI pro my users have complained on slow typing when filling in form that were created in version 9.5?
The issue is they type but there is 2 second delay when it appears in the field.
Windows 7 64bitI see, I misread your reference to Reader 11 to mean you were using Acrobat 11, but it looks like it worked out anyway.
The base-14 fonts are special in PDF because they are guaranteed to be available even if they are not embedded. If you select a non-base-14 font for use with a form field, the entire font usually gets embedded, since each glyph it contains has to be available for use with the field. This can take up a lot of space if you do this a lot, and the space isn't reduced if you change back to a base-14 font later because the internal reference to it is not removed. This is caused by the bug I mentioned.
In your case, however, the entire font doesn't get embedded because fonts like it (e.g., large asian fonts with a lot of glyphs, Arial Unicode) would take up too much space if fully embedded. If it did, a 100KB PDF could bloat to 20MB with that one change. Instead, users are expected to have such fonts installed on their system, which is why you were prompted to install the font pack. This despite the fact that the font was not actually used by anything in your document, it was simply the orphaned reference to it that triggered this. This should get fixed in Acrobat eventually so this type of thing doesn't happen again. -
I have lost nearly all my photos and events. I received a message effectively saying that I need to upgrade from an old base. I think I may have tried to open an event that was stored in iPhoto Buddy a few days ago. iPhoto Buddy is not supported in Lion. How can I retrieve my phjotos?

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Anyway, if your Mac meets the requirements you can skip 10.5.x, and even 10.6.x if you can afford to erase all your data.

Recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion then Mavericks. I have Final Cut Express and when I export to Quicktime, and open to play the movie, Quicktime starts to "convert" it? What is this about????
My existing movies are all the following types straight from FinalCut
Apple Intermediate Codec, 1920 × 1080, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
This particular movie is 6.66 Gb
The new Quicktime player in OS Mavericks converts these to the following format:
Apple ProRes 422, 1920 x 1080
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
And a movie size of 6.48 Gb

My guess the problem you are running into is the drive is formatted for a PC as NTFS. OS X can read files from NTFS however it cannot write to it. Check the formatting on the drive, if it's NTFS then it should be reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you can use Disk Utility to do this.

How to upgrade from LMS 3.0 December 2007 update to LMS 3.1 or LMS 3.2. The problem is the large number of C2960S-24TS-L switches that my organization has and cannot managed them..
I tried to upgrade devices through Software Center but always Ciscoworks informs me with the following message.
"Error while downloading package information from Cisco.com for the selected products. See the log file for details".
Also i can not run EOL/EOS inventory report. The message is
" INVREP0102: Cisco.com user credentials are invalid. Enter correct credentials." I check my credentials and is right.
The server has access to www through proxy without any restrictions.
In the past I've already updated devices through the software center. Also in the past i ve run EOS/EOL inventory reports.

Symptom:
After the 16th of June 2011 LMS will no longer be able to download Software and Device Package updates, or PSIRT and End of Sale/Life information from CCO
Conditions:
Hosted services in Cisco.com that are being leveraged by LMS, for downloading the latest Software and Device Package updates, as well as the PSIRT and End of Sale/Life information are being migrated to a new framework and the old services will be retired.
This will affect all LMS 3.x and 4.x versions.

Workaround:
Users of LMS 3.2.1 , 4.0 should install the patch that can be downloaded from cisco.com
Users of earlier version will need to upgrade to LMS 3.2 and then install the LMS 3.2 SP1 patch set before installing the patch"
Because of that it is necessary to upgrade not only to 3.1 or 3.2, you need 3.2.1 to get the patch and then access to cisco.com again.
The question about the better way for updating I can't answer. I did a update to 3.1 and then to 3.2. But I think you will find the requirements for the updates in the notes for them.
But I can't find LMS 3.1 in the cisco download center. There is only 3.2 and 3.2.1 available for me.

I just upgraded from Logic Express to Pro. When I open a project in Finder and neither Express nor Pro are running, it always opens in Express. I now want projects to open in Pro. "Open With ..." says Express is the default. How can I make Pro the default instead?

I haven't upgraded from Fusion 4.1.3 not because of procrastination or cheapness, but because 4.1.3 is WORKING -- and it took a LONG, LONG time
to get it that way!
In other words, my Fusion PTSD tells me that if I mess around with what I have AT ALL, I will be back in the half-time-job-hell of finding solutions to my unique

After upgrading to Yosemite, make sure you do a repair permissions in disk utility....and be prepared for some 10.10 bugs (it's just now becoming stable).
