Upgrade from CS2 to CS5 multi-questions

A few questions actually..
I very recently just bought an upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5. Everything went well but I don't understand a few, possibly trivial, things.
During the installation process, I in no way had to supply information about my CS2 licence to prove that I even have it. How do you guys make sure that someone who doesn't own a previous version of Photoshop isn't saying that they want an upgrade, thus avoiding the full price of the product?
Also, when you upgrade, does your old previous version license become deactivated? Are you suppossed to remove it from your computer or some other process?
Lastly, when I downloaded the upgrade, I downloaded both CS5 for 32 and 64 bit by default as they were both there. Do I need both on my computer and what's the difference between using/having the two?
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit to clarify.
Thanks in advance!

If you purchased and upgrade then it should ask for a qualifying serial number.  It is also possible you purchased an upsell which means you were basically given a copy of the full version at a discounted price.  The qualification process is done when you purchase the software.
You can continue to use your CS2 license.  You can not however sell it as it is qualifying you to utilize CS5.
For questions about 64-bit I would recommend reviewing http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/2006/12/64_bitswhen.html

Can I remove Photoshop CS2 after I have upgraded from CS2 to CS5?  I upgraded from CS2 to CS5 quite a while ago and I have never removed CS2.  Will it affect CS5 to remove the old CS2 if it was an upgrade?

If I were you I would just delete the installed  Adobe CS2 folder. Adobe CS2 uninstaller my remove settind CS5 made to your system after CS2.   The CS2 uninstaller may try to restore settings to a point in time where there was no Photoshop installed on your system.  If you do a CS un-install you may need to then Install CS5 on top of itself the update cs5 for the install will not have the updates you will be back at CS5 level .

I don't think you will be able to upgrade to CS5 as it is not for sale thru Adobe.  I don't think anyone outside of Adobe sells upgrades.  Thru Adobe you would have to purchase a full version of CS6 (or subscribe to the CLoud)... there is no upgrade path from CS2 to CS6

  • Why am I having performance Issues with an upgrade from CS2 to CS5.5?

I am struggling hard with an upgrade from InDesign CS2 to CS5.5 (part of CS5.5 Design Standard)
There is a very slow response when trying to produce a 45 page document which needs many .jpeg images inserting, sometimes up to six on each 3-column page. While InDesign behaves sort of normally on text only pages, it slows to a virtual standstill when on the pages with images. (But this is what its for and I didn't have this problem with CS2!!)
Having read through some of the postings on this topic I have followed all the advice without success :-(
    1) disable LSD in Preferences – Interface
    2) disable thumbnail display in Pages
    3) adjust view settings to Typical with Raster and Vector Images greyed out
    4) disable Save Preview Images with Documents
    5) check Links before opening documents
    7) switch Preflight off
I shouldn't need to do all this should I???
I am operating with the following:
Packard Bell ixtreme M5740 64 bit
Intel Core i5 CPU [email protected]
    4.0 GB RAM
ATII Radeon HD5570 graphics card 2779 MB available memory, 1024MB dedicated
plenty of free space – 274GB on c: drive and 296 GB on a D: drive
My hardware conforms to/exceeds the Indesign recommended hardware spec. Oh yes I am working on my local drive and  I don't have these problems with Photoshop or Illustrator CS5.5.
Has anyone an idea about what's going on?
I've lost a good 6-8 hours so far trying to sort it out. Any help and observations will be gratefully received!

    Hi Peter
Thanks - I've found that the files were marked as 'hidden' and thus by switching them on gain I was able to recreate the original location.  Regrettably this has had absolutely no effect on my problem. :-(
I have now created a  fresh document, studiously linking all my images properly  (similar number to a DK 'Eyewitness Travel Guide') and by the time I got halfway through its 80 pages, InDesign had slowed to a crawl - ie 15-20 seconds to respond to any command.  It is clearly doing something that it thinks necessary despite all the 'workarounds' people have suggested. Please please Adobe what's going on???

  • Can I upgrade from CS2 to CS5?

I purchased CS2 a few years ago and it worked great on my iBook PowerPC processor. Now I would like to upgrade just my Photoshop and InDesign software to the new CS5 versions because they will work better on my Macbook Pro with the Intel Processor without crashing like my CS2 does.
My question is, can I get the upgrades for those two or do I have to get the full version. $$$$ is an issue, one of the reasons why I haven't upgraded sooner.
    Thanks,
    Jen

No, you must buy the entire suite.
If all you need is those two you can get the Design Standard Suite for $694 with free shipping: http://amzn.to/c2Mmks but for about $80 more you can get Design Premium which gives you the extended version of Photoshop as well as Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash: http://amzn.to/dhYJWP

    Hope that helps,

Edit: I almost forgot to mention that CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade to CS5. If that policy holds, you'll be out of the upgrade eligibility loop when CS6 ships (though it will be quite a while before that happens).

  • Upgrade from CS2 to CS5?

I just upgraded to a new Intel-based Mac Pro after my old 2006 Pro PPC bit the dust. I know I cannot run CS2 on the new machine, and was pricing out the replacement software.
I cannot find on the Adobe site if I can use my old CS2 license (it is Design Premium) to apply toward purchasing the CS5 upgrade. And also looking at the new software out there, for those running OSX 10.7 what has your experience been with Lion and CS5?
Thanks in advance for your advice and thoughts.

CS5 is no longer available. You'll need to upgrade to CS5.5.
    Here's the CS2 to CS5.5 Design Premium Upgrade:http://amzn.to/kZOsu7
Your timing is pretty good. CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing. Should the current policy hold, you'll be out in the cold when the next version ships.

  • Upgrade from CS2 to CS5 leaves CS2 applications

Is it normal for a CS2 to CS5 upgrade to leave all the CS2 and Studio 8 apps installed?  Be nice to buy back some space but I don't want to mess things up.
    Tom

    Thanks.
So, like me, you think the old versions should have been deleted by the install.
It turns out Acrobat (9 Pro) is installed separately in CS5 (separate DVD, separate license code) and all previous versions of Acrobat had to be deleted before installing.

  • Upgrading from CS2 to CS5 question

I bought CS2 in 2005. My boss at my job wants to buy an upgrade for me for InDesign and Photoshop to do some stuff for the company. I don't want to buy the whole CS5 Design Standard package upgrade, just the upgrades for InDesign and Photoshop. Is that possible? Thanks.

No, it's not but you need to be aware of few things anyway.
CS2 is unsupported on Leopard and Snow Leopard and has quite a few issues on Intel Macs.
CS5 on the other hand is only supported on Leopard and Snow Leopard and is Intel Mac only.
You can buy the Standard suite at Amazon for $695 with free shipping: http://amzn.to/aJrWzh.
But IMO, you'd be better off with Design Premium for about $70 more: http://amzn.to/dsHO0a.
Why? Check out this article on my website: http://www.theindesignguy.com/purchase-advice.shtml
    Hope that helps,

  • Upgrading from CS2 to CS5

I'm running Indesign v4.0.5. I've got a client whose documents are CS2 but must be a slightly newer version as I can't open them. I am ready to upgrade to CS5 but I can't find anything which categorically states that opening her older files in CS5 will work without any hitches. Does she need to save them in the .inx format (or the newer version of)? Can I then save those files back so she can open them without issue is CS2? Is it possible to just update Indesign to, say, v5 rather than all the way to v7+? Any and all help gratefully received, I'm not an Indesign aficionado (I'm still on the dark side)...

If you are working with InDesign 4.0.5, this is the same as CS2, in theory you should be able to open your client's file. I reckon the problem lies somewhere else. First of all, make sure of your client's version before thinking of upgrading.
A reason amongst other to why you would not be able to open her file could be that she's using a certain plugin that's not installed on your system. Maybe you should check this as well.
What happens exactly when you try to open her file? Do you get an error message (if yes, what is it)? Or does nothing at all happen? etc
Now to come back on the upgrade part of your question, it's a bit more complex than that.
I would definitely advice to always upgrade as soon as you can (as long as you can possibly afford it of course). But in your case, this comes with a little twist... From my time as Adobe Tech Support, I remember that you could only upgrade 2 versions down. Meaning that for instance, now with CS5 (InDesign 7) you should only be able to upgrade a CS3 (InDesign 5) or CS4 (InDesign 6) version. For all the older versions, you'd have to be a complete version (as opposed to upgrade). This is why I think you should make sure that the problem can be solved otherwise before rushing into being the newest version (which might not even fix it).
Let me know if I can help further more

  • So, Upgrade from CS2 to CS5?

Okay, I've been through a frustrating install of CS2 on my Win7 64bit machine and in the process I find that CS2 is no longer supported, (no big surprise,) and CS2 may have issues with 64bit.
I only really use Photoshop, so I'm thinking maybe I should look at why I should or shouldn't upgrade.  (Amazon has the upgrade @ $153.xx USD or something like that at the moment.)
I do original art, inputting drawings and manipulating them in Photoshop, as well as working with digi photos.
Worth the upgrade?  What's new that I should be aware of?
I know it's a big question.  If you direct me to a FAQ or a review that will be helpful too.
    Thanks!

I hate having to use CS4, and would be VERY unhappy having to cope with CS2.
For a start there is the continous improvement in ACR.  I had to revist some six year old RAW files recently, and was surprised at how much I could get out of them compared to the ACR I used back then.  Skipping several versions in one go was a very apparent improvement.  The local adjustments in ACR are a huge feature.
Now we can rotate the canvas to aid tablet use.
Content Aware Fill and Healing brush.   I talked to someone a while who had a prise wining image of a fungie, but it was spoilt by a fibre from his gloves laying across the gills.  He said it took _hours_ to fix with the clone tool.  CA Healing brush would have done it in a single stroke!
Refine Edge is a real time saver.  It is so quick and easy to make near perfect selections of complex objects, I don't think twice before taking them on.
Things like Auto align, blend and panorama merge keep getting better - quite markedly for the latter.
Little things I like are thePost crop Vignetting in ACR.  I just can't do it as well myself manually when opened in PS.    The lens correction tool.  That's one of those things you don't realise howwrong your image was until you see it corrected, and then can't bare to look at the uncorrected version!
Then there are all the JDI features that make life easier.  Not much looked at one at a time, but taken together, real time savers that make PS more enjoyable because it removes the tedium and lets you get on with the creative stuff.
I have not used Puppet Warp all that often, but is so useful when you need it.
I am not at home so don't have PS as a memory jogger, and am doing this from memory, so I bet I have missed a few.

  • Upgrade from CS2 to CS5 will not connect to Elements 5.0 "catalogue" files.

Until now, I have been seamlessly using CS2 as my Photoshop Editor which was accessed through the Photoshop Elements 5.0 Catalogue function.
Within the Elements catalogues, raw or processed photos were acquired to Photoshop CS2 by left clicking the drop down menu "Edit" > and then left clicking to select, "Edit with Photoshop".
This no longer happens for the upgrade CS5.  How do I restore (re-appoint) CS5 as my external editor, still from within the drop down Edit menu in Elements 5.0?  Note: As the CS5 upgrade "glopped on" to the previous CS2 version, I cannot return to CS2 even if I wanted to -- (I don't).
It must be something obvious that completely eludes me.
    SR

    Hi Noel,
Went through the sequence in Elements as you suggested -- and was informed by the folllowing box:
"You do not need to choose Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (dropped the suffixes in each case) as the other editor.Photoshop elements already supports using these editors from the Edit menu and Edit toolbar button."
I tried going through Bridge, again as you suggested:  Bridge Label Preferences > File Type Associations .  However, nothing there to be found in the very extensive list.
I think the problem is access through elements.
It may be that I'll need to buy an Elements 9.0 upgrade to continue using the Elements catalog.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

  • Upgrading from CS2 to CS5 worth it?

I got an email from Adobe that said CS5 is my last chance to upgrade. I'm happy with CS2, and see that some people here are having issues, so I don't know if it is worth it. I'm not rich, so I'd be kinda mad if I spent $199 for something that wasn't worth it, or gave me big headaches.

There are new features in each new version that make it attractive.  Personally, I love the new features and am glad I upgraded.
Is it worth it?  That's something only you can decide.  I believe you can download and try CS5 without obligation (and certainly without removing the CS2 version you're currently running).

  • Cs5: upgrading from CS2 to CS5 PC to Mac...need help shrinking file sizes

I am designing wallpapers for cellphones and was given very specific guidelines of various dimensions and file size (based on the different devices), 96 dpi, and PNG format. When working on my PC using Ps CS2, I would drag or copy/paste images from AI (CS I think) into PS. I found that the file size was lower when doing that. I would then do a "save as", and successfully keep to the given specs.
When I tried this on my Mac, using an image that I previously saved on my pc as a test, the file sizes were always over what they needed to be. I can't seem to figure out what the difference could be. I couldn't do a "save for web" because the dpi would come back as 72 when the file is opened. I tried that once and I was told to re-save the images again...and each image is saved over 100 times.  My PC went down and I've not been able to continue the work since.
Does anyone have a clue what I can do to fix this? I am totally baffled at this point. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

I'm on PC/Windows 7. I had enough issues getting CS2 installed on Windows 7, but it can be done. I just wanted some assurance that Dreamweaver installation doesn't remove GoLive. Thanks!

  • Upgrade from CS2 Education to CS5 Full Commercial?

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I have a question regarding upgrading to CS5. I don't think there's been another question on this specific question I have. If there is, sorry for posting it again.
Basically, I have a copy of the CS2 Design Premium Education version. Now I would like to upgrade it to the CS5 Design Premium Commercial version. I didn't need to work from home previously, so never really needed the commercial licence for my laptop. But now it's time to get one so I can work anywhere.
I know there is an upgrade from CS2 to CS5 version that I can purchase but it doesn't tell me if it can be used on the Education version too.
Can anyone confirm that the upgrade does work on an Education version too?
    Thanks heaps.
    Leanne

You brought up a few issues here.
    (1) If you bought an upgrade that you cannot use, please call Adobe Customer Support (via phone) and see what can be done to let you return the software. There should not be any problem if this is within 30 days of purchase, but even if not, they should be supportive. If the first agent you speak to can't assist, ask for their supervisor.
    (2) The copy of CS3 that was installed on your Mac by your employer is likely a volume license which cannot be upgraded via a standard upgrade license. Note that if your employer installed the software using their volume serial number, that software license belongs to your employer and not you personally. It that employer is in fact your ex-employer, you no longer have legal rights to use that software which was licensed to your ex-employer. (Note that purchasers of volume licenses cannot unbundle a volume license by either giving away copies such as to former employees or sell such copies!)

  • Upgrading from CS2 Suite (Win) to CS5 Suite (Mac)

Over the last few days I have twice called Adobe UK sales and have been assured that I can easily upgrade my Windows CS2 suite to a Mac CS5 suite.
I was told that all I have to do is enter the CS2 Windows serial number during the CS5 Mac installation and it will be accepted.
However I have found no mention of this anywhere on the internet.
Has anyone been given the same or conflicting advise by Adobe for this type of scenario?

Adobe are even contracdicting themselves re CS5 upgrades.
I was told by the UK sales team that I wouldn't need to submit a letter of software destruction upgrading from CS2 Windows to CS5 Mac.
However, the Adobe on-line representative said I would.
I can understand this requiurement for a straight platform swap of the same version.
However, if I am upgrading, I surely need a valid suite to upgrade from?
If I destroy my CS2 I will no longer have a valid suite any longer!
I have also found out that PhotoShop Mac CS5 will apparently no longer have the ability to print printer profiling targets with colour management disabled. Supposedly Adobe labs are developing a separate utility for printing profiling targets but with no ETA. This means that I will have to continue to use an earlier version of PhotoShop anyway!
With these uncertainties, contradictions and complications I have now cancelled my order.
    Thanks again for your help.
