Upgrade from CS3 Windows to CS4 Macintosh

Hello,
it's going to look weird and like a question coming back from a few years ago but it would help me a lot if any one had the answer...
I have a WebDesign Premium CS3 for Windows and an upgrade from any CS3 to Design Premium CS4 for Macintosh.
But, the CS4 set up assistant doesn't accept the serial number from the CS3...
I know that you can cross-upgrade to CS5 with a regular upgrade but is it the same with former versions ?
Ay suggestions ?
Thanks
Nicolas

You can cross-grade from different versions, but you need to give sign documentation from Adobe that you have destroyed the disks. The reason you may have had trouble and why you still may have trouble with a cross-grade is that when you buy an upgrade there are different upgrade disks that MUST be used depending upon the software you are upgrading from. Before you start, you might be best off calling customer service with your two serial numbers and see what is what. You want to make sure you buy an upgrade that will work.

  • If I upgrade from CS3 Windows to CS4 Mac , will my windows CS3 still work?

    Subject says it all.
I would like to have photoshop CS4 on my mac but be able to retain the useage of CS3 on my windows machine. Is this possible or will upgrading cancel out my ability to use CS3?

Because i have two computers that i use simultaneously, 1 mac and 1 pc. I would not own a mac if I wanted to run windows on it hehe.
I have software I use on windows because it is more supported than the mac version of it. ( some companies shouldn't tease and say they have a mac version unless they actually have a tech squad capable of squashing bugs )
It is very convenient to have photoshop on my windows pc along with that software.
My PC and Mac are almost identical in specs ( 4gb ram, 2.13 ghz core 2 duo vs 2.4 ghz core 2 duo ) yet my mac can open files from my PC's desktop 10x faster than my PC can. - over the network. I keep my PC in top shape, i defrag, i run malware / antivirus cleaners, I check my registry regularly. Its just not close to being as fast as my mac.
I use my mac primarily for webdesign/development work and thats why I would love to have a permanent version of photoshop on it. the work I do on my PC is related to 3d and the software I use has very poor mac support.
So my question has been answered, I am unable to crossgrade to mac and retain a working PC version. so for now, i get to upgrade the PC version and wait for a few more $ until i can grab a full mac version. at which point i might even go all out and grab the $1700 suite.
    Thank you for the help!

  • Upgrade from CS3 Extended to CS4 (non-Extended) fails

    Hello everyone,
I looked at the upgrade method from CS3 Extended to CS4 it tells me I need to contact Adobe via phone and purchase the upgrade.  After receiving the upgrade, I attempt to install it and it informs me that it cannot find a valid Photoshop install and asks for version and serial number of my previous version.  It only give me the options of Photoshop CS, Photoshop CS2 (all the languages), and finally Photoshop CS3. No option for CS3 Extended.  So I give it CS3 and plug in the serial number and it says invalid serial number.
Called Technical support and spent 30 minutes waiting.  They had me do 'Ctrl+Shift+Double mouse click" to get a "Challenge Number" which does not work.  Then they said I had to call Customer support to get this Challenge number.  Called Customer Support and spent 1hr waiting...and still waiting.
So, can anyone help on how I can upgrade?  I'm guessing they were suppose to give me a serial number to upgrade.
I finally gave up with the phone support and filed a support case online...which said I should get a reply within 3-days.
Very disappointed with Support.  After paying over $1k in products, I would expect good customer support...but that's for another forum
    Thanks.

Well, after getting so fed up, I finally figured it out.  But first I have to tell my story of frustration.
So, after calling Technical Support, their instructions to get the 'Challenge Number' by pressing Ctrl+Shift and double-clicking on one of the INSTALL screens did not work.  So, after a total of 44 minutes (most of it on hold), I was told to call Customer Service at 800-833-6687.  I called them and spent 55 minutes on hold.  When someone finally answered, I told them the story, and they told me to do the exact same thing, press Ctrl+Shift and double-click to get a Challenge Number.  I said, "Technical Support told me to call you guys to get my Challenge Number".  They said "we are Technical Support.  Please contact Customer Service at 800-833-6687 to get your Challenge Number".  I WAS ANGRY!
I than asked to speak to a manager. 10 minutes later, the guy came on and said that his manager was busy on another line!  He then promissed me that I should be able to get to "Customer Support" quickly this time.  After being very direct, stating that I do not want to spend another hour on hold, I asked him that there must be something else that they can do to fix this problem...nope.
So (sorry if you've read this far), I called the number AGAIN and was on hold for 40 minutes...then it turned 5:00PM Pacific Time!  ARG!
SO, THE ANSWER to the problem on getting a Challenge Number.  You must install the software on a trial basis FIRST.  (not during installation as Tech support tried to have me do.)  After installation, start CS4 for the first time, and it will come to Software Setup and ask if you wish to continue using it on a trial-basis, or if you have a serial number for the product.  Put in the serial number for CS4 and click Next.  The next window labled 'Upgrade Check' is where you press Ctrl+Shift and double-click to the the "Challenge Code".  Why Technical Support did not know to do this really bothers me.
Well, tomorrow, I will be contacting Technical Support at 6am to get this working.
And if it was a matter of pressing Ctrl+Shift and double-clicking, why was I required to purchase the software to be shipped?  I could have saved on shipping and tax if I just downloaded it the way I wanted to in the first place.
Well, thanks for reading.  Hopes this helps someone.

  • Upgrade from CS3 extended to CS4 problem

I own CS3 Extended. I just purchased and download CS4 (not extended). Before I made the purchase, I contacted customer service (via chat) and was assured I could upgrade to CS4 from CS3 extended. When I try to register the product as an upgrade, it does not recogonize my CS3 extended serial number. Did Adobe steer me wrong?
    Thanks

I recall you have to get some kind of code from them to unlock the upgrade.
It was discussed here on the forum a few months back.

  • Student Upgrade from CS3.3 to CS4?

    Hi,
I had to buy this for class, which has already started... I purchased it at the end of August. Am I going to have to pay an upgrade fee??? It took MONTHS to save the money for CS3.3 already. :(
I hope the answer is no.....
    Thanks.

As an update, I did call. I spent over an hour on the phone with a very nice lady who assured me that she would help me out with my situation, and would grant me an "exception". She told me I would receive an email asking for my POP "Proof of Purchase" (Dated August 25, 2008, I might add). I emailed it. I received another email asking me for a *scan* of my POP (which I had received by email. I sent it in. I received back a response that "they would be checking into my eligibility and if I was deemed eligible then I'd receive the product. Nothing else. They provided a case number, but I have no idea how to find out the status, and there was no indication of anything I need to do from here.
So, I don't know what is happening, as that was a week ago. All I can say is, 150 fellow students, a professor and the 600 people a week who frequent my blog are all waiting to hear the results of this.
In the kind of economic conditions we are in, this makes me very sad. I am older and went back to school specifically to learn these tools, and I've lost some of my motivation.

  • Upgrade from CS3.3 to CS4 Web Premium but Flash CS4 doesn't install

I just installed my new version of CS4, and almost all the applications installed properly. All but Flash, that was greyed when I tried to make a "personal installation" and did not install at all when I used the "automatic" installation.
And there is something else : I had a beta version of Soundbooth, and Soundbooth neither was not installed. So, I presume I should uninstall it before trying again.
But what is it with Flash ?
    Thanks for any help,
    Gilles

Please could you be more specific ?
How do I find this script ? On the installation disk, I suppose ?
Or is it a way to launch the installation package ?
    Thanks for your reply, Buko
    Gilles
P.S. I checked on the disk 1 and there is 4 scripts into the resources/common/scripts/ directory :
    ContainerProxy.js
    localization.js
    silentWorkflow.js
    utils.js
P.P.S OK I found it : on the Lisez-moi file, there is a link to the CS4 support page (http://www.adobe.com/support/creativesuite/) and there is a link to the clean script. So I'll have to uninstall all of it...

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended upgrade from CS3 Student Version

I was looking for the Student upgrade from CS3 to CS4 for Photoshop, but could not find it.
I only saw the regular upgrade edition, not the student one.
    Could anybody please help me?
    Thanks in advance

There is no such thing as a student upgrade. Your educational version of Photoshop entitles you to upgrade to the commercial version of Photoshop but you'll pay the same price as everybody else.
I'm assuming that ($199.99) is still cheaper than buying a new, full educational version.

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS4 Extended

I have just purchased an upgrade from Photoshop CS3 Standard to Photoshop CS4 Extended, and have problems activating. In the dropdown it only offers an upgrade from CS3 Extended and will not accept a serial number from CS3. I've spent about 2 FRUSTRATING hours on the phone today and all they can offer is that I give them the challenge code and they activate this installation, and each time I have to re install I would have to do the same. Needless to say I wasn't impressed at all, and have got an RMA number. Has anyone else suffered from this problem?

    call customer service.

  • CS4 unable to encode videos after upgrading from CS3

CS4 was unable to export and encode a video after upgrading from CS3.  The error message indicated the the file could not be found.  To fix this problem do the following.  Create a short cut to adobe premiere pro (executable program) named "Premiere"     Then place the short cut in the folder C:Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/dynamiclink    After doing this my version worked fine.

The problem mainly occures when one then removes the CS3 version of Adobe Premiere.   I have found a tech note on this problem at:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407106&sliceId=2

    Hi,
No they don't have to, at least I think so. If your
administror go to the menubar: Contribute>Administer
Websites> Choose the site you wish to set the settings for. In
'Compatibility' choose 'Transition Mode' and klik OK. This should
allow the other users to keep working in their version of

  • Swf previews in browser and doesn't work on server after upgrade from cs3 to cs5

I have upgraded from CS3 to CS5. My site uses a template created in dreamweaver 8.  When I edit a page and embed a .swf file created in flash cs5, it doesn't work on my server, but works on my computer when I 'test in browser'.  I have uploaded all the files in the 'scripts' directory.  I am streaming video.  I have tried using both actionscript 2.0 and 3.0 and streaming .flv and .f4v.  None work.
I have a big site and do not wan't to redo my template unless I absolutely have to.

It's not 100% clear from your post, but you should be aware that CS5 plugins should not work in CS5.5. Because of a CS5.5 bug, CS5 plugins will load in InDesign 7.5.0, but that is fixed in 7.5.1 so they will not load.
You should lean a bit harder on Virginia Systems. They should be able to tell you how to get them the stack trace from the crash which they should be able to look at and tell you which plugin (if any) is responsible for the crash. I could do it for Mac OS X but I don't know how under Windows. You could start by looking at the Event Viewer, though. That may have some helpful information about the crashes and the faulting module.

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS5 on Mac

Our company just purchased CS5 and we were told that we should be able to upgrade from CS3 (we never got CS4). The box we received states it's an upgrade from CS4, but when we asked adobe, they said it should install. No such luck. Should we have received a different version or is there something we're supposed to do differently?

You most certainly should have. The upgrade from CS4 is (assuming Design Premium) is $200 less than the upgrade from CS2/CS3.
If you purchased directly from Adobe call them and get it straightend out.

  • Upgrading from CS3 to CS5 issues

I work at a medium size College on a pretty small team, 1 editor/writer, 1 communications coordinator, and 1 designer (me). I've been using InDesign (ID) for 5 years now and we added on the InCopy (IC) workflow a few years ago with CS3 (both of us then had CS3). The editor and I just recently upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and we've hit a snag. I opened a project, the Academic Catalog in fact, in CS5 that we began in CS3 which we were almost finished with and when I tried to check out a story I got this error.
"This story needs to be converted to "InCopy Document" format in order to edit it."
The editor got the same message in IC. So I thought maybe files created by CS3 for IC don't work with CS5 so I decided to try to unlink the INCX files in ID and relink. Sure enough it created a new ICML file which the editor was able to open, edit, and save in IC. And I thought I had my problem solved until I opened the file in ID; when I tried to update the linked file ID crashed. I've tried unsuccessfully to get the updated stories from IC to update in ID w/o crashing. I've restarted the computer; it is Windows afterall. I've run 'Updates' in both our programs, and it says there are none. I've tried tossing the ID and ICML file; fortuanalty I was smart enough to do all this with a copy of the orginal CS3 file. I followed all my above steps a second time and it's still crashing. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a known issue like this?
btw, we're both running Windows Vista and both in CS5 (7.0).

I might just have to go back to CS3 to finish this project up—fortunatly I foresaw an issue like this and kept CS3 installed. That will most likely solve the problem with this project, provided it too does not crash. And that is my concern for future 'new' projects in CS5, are those going to crash too? I think I'll do some testing with my editor.
    Bob,
What type of additional info would help?
    Thanks,
    Colleen

  • Upgrading from CS3. Should we go straight to CS6, or go to CS5?

I work for a government agency, and we are considering upgrading from CS3 soon. We primarily use InDesign, with occasional uses of Photoshop and very rare uses of Illustrator. We also heavily use Acrobat Pro.
We currently have Acrobat 8.3.0 and InDesign 5.0.4.  We are running Windows 7 on machines with 4 GB RAM and a 32-BIT Operating System.
We use InDesign to create forms. There are occasional graphics, but not many. We also use color very rarely. We use paragraph styles heavily, but not object styles.
My question is, should we upgrade from CS3, all the way to CS6?  Our main concern is that our thousands of forms make the conversion from one version to the next with as little movement as possible.  The placement of elements on the page is very precise, and changes in the documents needs to be avoided as much as possible.  I realize that some adjustments, especially in text, are going to happen.
We also need to be sure that whatever we upgrade to will still work well with Acrobat. We are hoping that will also get upgraded, but we aren't sure about that at this point.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Would we be better off going to CS5 or CS5.5 now and upgrading to CS6 from there later?
My boss has no interest in going to the Cloud concept.  Continuous updates that could possibly affect form layout is something we want to avoid.
I understand that at this point we can't actually upgrade to CS6, we will have to pay the full price for new licenses. I'm not so clear on whether we will be able to continue to upgrade in the future without going to the cloud concept. I believe you will be able to, but if anyone knows different please let me know.
    Thanks.

IMO, the real question is "Why would we want to or need to change from InDesign CS3?"
You didn't identify any possible reasons. If InDesign CS3 is a perfect fit for your current needs, the main compelling reasons are that you need to add more users, you need to exchange ID files with workers who are using later InDesign releases, and you can't purchase more CS3 licenses; or you're upgrading to new hardware and a operating system that doesn't support InDesign CS3.
If you just need to obtain more licenses, it's likely if you have many users, your licenses were purchased under an Adobe Volume Licensing Plan (VLP.) I've read postings on this forum that VLP purchasers can buy more licenses for non-current InDesign releases. The idea is that all Adobe has to do is generate new license numbers, not retrieve and provide the older software. For details contact your VLP vendor.
If the issue is needing to be compatible with newer releases, or being able to run on new incompatible equipment, then you need to buy new software or subscriptions at the going price. However, perhaps under VLP, there are attractive purchase options for multiple licenses.
Perhaps someone on the forum can clarify the VLP?

Thank you.  That was my own opinion, but I've been asked to look into it.
Is staying in CS3 indefinitely an option, though (to avoid moving the files to CS6)?  I would think the further development of software would eventually make trying to use CS3 with ever advanced verseions of Acrobat really problematic.

So, just so I have this straight; would CS upgrade to CS5 or did you mean I would have to purchase CS5 to upgrade to CS6? And If so, does CS upgrade any further? i.e. CS 3 or 4? Thanks for your reply --
CS will not upgrade to CS5. Historically, only CS2-CS4 ever qualified for upgrade to CS5. Those versions are all long superseded and no longer available from Adobe.
Adobe currently only sells CS6 (for outright purchase) and the Cloud (by subscription only). Cloud members have access to both CS6 and CC.
The only way to upgrade to CS6 is from CS5. Adobe no longer sells CS5. Unless you purchase the full version of CS5 from elsewhere (I don't see any point in that in this case) you would not be able to upgrade to CS6. You'd have to buy the full version of CS6. Or subscribe to one of the Cloud plans. PS+LR is an excellent deal if you use those products.
