Upgrade from FCE2 to FCE HD3.5?

Hi. I'm currently using FCE2 and am considering getting Apples upgrade to FCE HD3.5. However I'm unsure whether its possible to upgrade directly to HD3.5 or whether I need to 1st upgrade to FCE3 HD? I noticed on Apples website it says "upgrade from FCE HD 2 or 3 for $99.00" however my understanding is that my copy of FCE2 is not an HD version therefore making me wonder if I can do a direct upgrade to FCE HD3.5? Thanks.

FCE 3.5 only needs 512MB RAM and will work with G4, G5 and Intel Core Duo processors. (It will actually work with Core Solo Macs though Apple doesn't recommend them).
It needs AGP or PCI cards - so that covers pretty well every Mac made in the last decade or so.
I believe you can throw FCE2 away - but it's not doing any harm is it?
You might upset it if it suspects you don't want it any more - old applications can be very sensitive!
Ian.

  • Want to upgrade from iMovie to FCE. What will be the difference?

I am currently working through hours of DV footage from my camcorder using my Macbook and iMovie. Although I have been pleased with the results I know now that I want to upgrade to both a better computer and to Final Cut Express. I have also been considering going the full way to Final Cut 2 but as this is a lot more money I am wondering whether the upgrade to FCE will be enough. What extra do you get with FCE over iMovie and what more will it allow me to do. I have been pretty amazed at how good iMovie is at a consumer level so would expect FCE to allow me to be even more creative but am not sure exactly how. Is the upgrade enough or would FC2 be a better option. I will not be needing to make broadcast or professional productions, just do a good job at a serious amateur level. I do not need to use a lot of effects but I do want to be able to add good soundtracks and transitions. The audio is an important part of my movies.
    thanks

Brilliant..just what I wanted. Thanks. Looks like I will need to read up on some of the terminology to get a good idea of what each feature before buying but thats a great table.

  • Upgrading from FCE to FCP

Is there any way to upgrade from FCE to FC studio or do I have to buy the whole studio suite?
Im running Final Cut Express 2 btw.
    -Mads Meskalin

    Hi
No as Ian R. Brown writes there are non. But sell Your FCE then You get something.
    Why FCP ?
There are most probably many individual reasons. Mine was
    • Ability to share a project with others haveing FCP
    • The Multi Camera editing is avesome - but only if You got more than one Camera recordings.
    • Color corrector - three ways with - white, black and mid tone drop tools
    I really like this one.
Then there are so much more in the bundle
    • DVD Studio Pro WITH HD
    • Motion
    • Color
    • Soundtravk Pro
    • Compressor
So much new to learn - AND STILL SO Familiar miljoe.

  • FCP 5 Upgrade From FCE

I recently bought an FCP 5 upgrade (M9921Z/A) and the Apple website says that it can upgrade from FCE. I know it's old but couldn't afford to buy FC Studio 2 and couldn't find a full-up version of FCP5. I've tried it with both an FCE 2.0 and FCE 3.5 S/N and neither works. Has Apple caused me to waste money or is there some solution to this problem? Does anyone have an unused FCP S/N that I could use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. . .

    Larry,
The only "upgrade" from FCE to Final Cut Studio 1 was a limited time offer that was known as the Crossgrade Program. The program lasted for a bit over a year and expired back in March prior to the release of Final Cut Studio 1. This program allowed Final Cut Express and Pro users to obtain the Universal version of Final Cut Studio 1. This was a paid upgrade and only worked if you filled out a form, and mailed in your original install discs. For users that were already using FCS 1 (PPC version), they were sent back a set of Universal Install discs, which utilized their original serial numbers. For any other upgrades, (i.e. from FCP 4, or FCE), a set of install discs were mailed back along with a retail serial number, not an upgrade serial.
Apple no longer sells Final Cut Pro 5 at any of their stores. The only version of FCP available at Apple is FCS2. It is not possible to use an Express serial number to "Upgrade" to Final Cut Pro.
Where did you purchase this "upgrade"?
The only help you are going to receive here is basically going to tell you to contact Apple directly, or get FCS2. Discussion on how to illegally obtain Serial numbers is strictly forbidden, and is against the forums terms of use, as well as against the EULA.

  • Upgrade from FCE?

So i got a version of Final Cut Pro HD (upgrade from final cut express), but when I type in the serial number from FCE (which i got from choosing "about FCE" from the menu bar) it won't highlight the OK button for me to enter the code... i checked the code several times and its exactly right... any ideas?

I got it. I had been using "about FCE" from within fce previously to find the serial number, but it actually hides the last three digits. I finally went in under library>application support> FCE support documents where i found the final cut express system ID. If you ctrl click it and open it with text edit, you get a little box with a short paragraph of info about the program including the serial number used to activate it and if its registered or not. Here you can find those last three "invisible" digits to the full serial code.
I dont know if this was helpful for anyone else, but im kinda proud of myself for thinking of going into the library.

  • Question on Upgrading from FCE to FC Studio2

I'm currently using FCE HD 3.5, which I upgraded from FCE version 1.0
I understand that no upgrade path exists from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Studio 2.
However I have seen on ebay someone selling an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5 HD from Final Cut express.
I was wondering.... if I got this then could I then get a Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade from FCP 5 HD?
Does anyone see any problems with doing this? It seems to be a way to save money.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Tom,
One other question: assuming that my upgrade from FCE to FCP5 is successful. Then how does the upgrade package for Final Cut Studio2 work (If I decide at some future point to upgrade again)
Will it detect my FCP5 files or will I have to enter the FCP5 serial number, and if so then will I get into trouble at that point. Bottom line is will Studio2 accept the FCP5 serial number?
    Thanks Tom,
    Steve.

  • FCE upgrade from version 2 to 3.5

I have the original FCE 1 disk and FCE 2 upgrade disk. But I never bought FCE HD, so I don't have versio 3 (=HD).
Does the 99$ upgrade version (FCE 3.5) also work when upgrading from FCE 2.03?
    G5 dp2.5/2.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes - it will upgrade from versions 1, 2 or 3.
You will find the confirmation half way down this page in the right hand column:-
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa?productLearnMore =MA264Z/A
You may not even need the old FCE to be installed as I have been told that all you need is its serial number.

  • Upgrade from fce 1.0.1 to fce hd

I purchased fce hd as an upgrade to fce 1.0.1 I'm having trouble installing fce hd because the serial number for fce 1.0.1 is not being accepted. Any suggestions? Is it not accepting my serial number because I'm not upgrading from fce 2?

Are you typing in 28 characters? Case sensitive, after the first letter, groups of triplets that either letters or numbers, not mixed? Are you sure the 1s and 0s are correct? If you're sure, you have to contact Apple for installation problems.

  • Upgrade from Final Cut Express to Pro 5.0

I think I made a stupid mistake. I purchased Final Cut Pro 5.0 upgrade thinking I could upgrade from Final Cut Express. But when I am asked to enter the previous versions serial number, it does not accept it. Is there any way to do this or am I going to have to buy the full version of Final Cut Pro?
Also, I have a G4 Powerbook with the following specs. Is it going to run the program if I do finally get it installed?
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX

To upgrade from FCE you need the Final Cut Pro 5 Upgrade from Final Cut Express. I just upgraded FCE and that worked fine for me.
Hope this helps answer your question...

  • Thinking bout upgrading from imovie

So im thinking about upgrading from imovie. What do you think some good reasons for doing so are. Im wanting to be able to have mulitple movie tracks. Also, are there better transitions and effects in FCE? Is there a way to do a Four Corner type PIP with different video in each corner? Let me know what the big selling points were for you.
    thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's depend of your projects and needs.
FCE is the swiss army knive of video editing and iMovie is the fisher-price.
FCE needs many much more time to master, it's less automated, it had less "canned" transitions, it's a totally different way of editing than iMovie, but you can build almost anything you want... if you master it.
A good hammer is nothing without a good carpenter and an hammer is too much heavy to plant a needle.
Be prepare to follow a steep learning curve, but you'll get reward if you persist.
FCE is the Final Cut Pro's little brother: once your master it, you will be at home in FCP if you upgrade.
Yes you can do 4 corners PIP if you want, and remember that in FCE there are many ways to achieve one goal.
This forum is full of switchers from iMovie to FCE and generally they stay with FCE after the switch.

  • Upgrading from iMovie Questions

I need to upgrade from iMovie -- need to because I'm finding that iMovie is somewhat unreliable regarding some of its 'known issues.'
    So ...
I'm trying to figure out what the key differences are between FC Pro and Express. I'm willing to endure any 'learning curve' differences, I just want to figure out if there are any features in the Pro edition that I'll never use and weigh the differences.
    1. Is there any matrix you can point to that does this comparison?
    2. Is there a 'Final Cut Express Studio' that includes all of the software in Final Cut Pro Studio or do they have to be purchased individually.
    3. Are both FC Pro and Express devoid of the 'known issues' that can make working with iMovie somewhat unreliable?
    Thanks for your feedback.

    I found a comparison article here: http://camcorders.about.com/od/videoediting/a/FinalCutCompare.htm
Final Cut Express HD also gives you Soundtrack 1.5 and LiveType 2 for $299.
To get Final Cut Pro, you must by Final Cut Studio for $1299. With this you also get SoundTrack Pro (different from SoundTrack 1.5), Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, and the same version of LiveType (I think).
You cannot buy Final Cut Pro, SoundTrack Pro, Compressor, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro individually.
Since you cannot buy DVD Studio Pro individually, if you buy FCE HD you'd still need to use iDVD (or Toast) to author a DVD Video.
You won't find the same "known issues" as iMovie. There will be different "known issues" as no software package is perfect. Your biggest issue will probably be the learning curve but you can overcome that.

  • Is a switch from imovie to FCE HD with 10.3.9 OK? Or do I need Tiger?

OK, finally looking to switch from imovie to FCE, but have reviewed many posts regarding compatibility with Panther vs. Tiger, and I've been through the QT7 upgrade mistake with 10.3.9, and then went back to QT 6.5.2 (this is my first post, as most other imovie problems I have been able to resolve after checking the imovie posts - such as the QT7 issue and purchased iTunes songs not uploading unless burned to a CD first, etc., etc....).
The FCE 3.5 requirements recommend 10.4.6+ and QT 7.0.4+, but it looks like many FCE users are still with 10.3.9, but maybe they're not using FCE 3.5. Should I try and find an earlier version of FCE and stick with 10.3.9? Any other recommendations or upgrade suggestions based on my current configuration for a "smooth" (not "jaggy" or "jumpy") transition from imovie?

Ideally if you do serious, processor intensive work, such as video editing, music production or photo-manipulation, you should have a dedicated computer that nobody else touches - especially kids!
Machines are like animals and wives - they should have only one master!
I realise that last statement is not considered PC but as we are on a Mac forum, anything that is not PC should be OK.
Anyway, I'm the master in my own house, when my wife lets me.
Your machine may benefit from a little spring-cleaning. Open Disk-Utility and "Repair Permissions" on your boot HD and "Repair" all the others.
Also run the Cron scripts with a free utility like MacJanitor:-

Actually, you haven't said why you want to move from iMovie. Is there something you need to do that iMovie cannot?

  • Upgrading from final cut express to final cut studio

Hi there. I'm upgrading from FC express to FC studio. How do I uninstall fc express, soundtrack and live type from my IMAC before I install FC studio or what is recomended?

    Hi,
Don't know what version of FCE you have but I had this link:

  • Can I upgrade from upgrade?

I have FCE HD 3.0... it's an upgrade version. I don't remember how I got it originally - I don't think I owned a previous version, and seem to remember upgrading from iLife or something. I have my original discs and serial numbers.
Can I upgrade to 4.0 from this?
    thanks,
    Andrew

As long as you own a legitimate retail version of FCE, you can upgrade to the next version. You WILL need the serial number for the version you're upgrading from.
FWIW, there is no upgrade path from iLife to FCE.

  • Does upgrade to Tiger affect FCE?

A number of things require OSX 10.4 that I may have to upgrade from 10.3.9.
But I have a pretty good video production system working, using FCE along with iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes-Garage Band.
Any FCE-related horror stories making the upgrade to Tiger? Using FCE 2.0.3.
    Thanks,
    TD

No horror stories, but if you upgrade to Tiger, I'd strongly suggest the following:
    - Backup everything you need to keep, reformat your HD and install Tiger from scratch
.... I know that means you'll have to reinstall other apps too, but it will give you a good clean start
    - Download the combo updater and Update Tiger at least to 10.4.2 but don't even think of updating to 10.4.9
    - Upgrade FCE to version 3.5 and then Update to 3.5.1
    - Install QT 7.1.5
If you have iLife v5 that will be fine on Tiger, you don't necessarily have to upgrade to iLife v6
