Upgrade from ios6 to iOS 7, not 8

I want to upgrade my iPhone 4s from 6.1.3 to 7 but not 8.

Cannot be done. iOS 7 is not being signed for devices that will run the latest. If you attempt to update your 4S it will update to the latest iOS, which as of a few minutes ago is iOS8.1.

Finally decided to upgrade my iPhone 5 from ios6??? to iOS 8 (which ever version is available today).
Backed up on iTunes first.
Launched upgrade from iTunes.
All seem fine until got a message that could not access phone because it was locked and should enter passcode to gain access.
Entered passcode and now on phone have progress bar which has not budged for about 3 hours. No longer see phone as device in iTunes.
Should I continue to be patient?

Unless you have a very slow Internet connection it should not take 3 hours. On my 50 Mbps connecting it takes 15 minutes. While the phone is updating it may disappear from iTunes; that part is normal. But not for 3 hours. Was the phone ever jailbroken?

The attachment is an .xls excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. I viewed the file in the email and did not edit it with any software. I can forward the file to anyone that is may want to check it out to see if they can help me. I was wondering if there was some way of forcing another ios6 install on my phone and maybe that would solve it.

GPS and walking maps are also available.
You have lost nothing really other than Street View natively.
However imo I do think flyover, and similar technologies seen competing Bing and even Google Maps looks good but is actually functionally useless.

If your phone was previously hacked to unlock it, when you updated the hack was removed and it's re-locked to the original carrier. The phone will now activate and operate only with that original carrier.

Yes, and the music trasferred, I can see it in the folder, but it's not displayed in iTunes.

HT4519 On upgrade from IOS6 to IOS7 my email no longer sends

On upgrade from IOS6 to IOS7 on iphone 5 my email no longer sends - I have to exit email, wait, open the email app and then it sends. I have left my ipad on IO6 with the same settings as the iphone 5 on IOS7, and it still sends emails first time. I have taken the phone in to an O2 store guru and they couldn't help, and I also deleted and re-created the account, still no luck.
The outgoing server is smtp.o2.co.uk
Any suggestions welcomed - the Apple support pages haven't helped.

I have a specific app that works in ios7 but not in ios6 or ios8

This version ios 6.0.1 causes this app to crash (on attempting a manual network connection to TightVNC the app crashes). However the app will not work with ios8 as stated from app developer. (I also have an Ipad mini+GSM with ios 7.0.6 on it and this same app works flawlessly. So I know it will work with ios7.0.6)

I have tried installing ios 7.0.6 to this ipad using Itunes and shift/restore using a downloaded ios7.0.6 version but I get an error (3194) saying the Ipad could not be restored. It seems my only option is upgrading to ios8.1.3

A device can only be updated to the highest iOS version that it supports, which for an iPad 2 is the current version i.e. 8.1.3
An Apple store won't be able to do it either, iOS 7 is no longer signed by Apple for iPad 2

A few comments:
You will eventually be able to retrieve all your apps. You will be able to go to the App Store on your iPad, click "Updates" in the lower right, click "Purchased" and re-download them from there (but be careful - download them one at a time).
It sounds like the reason the photos and apps did not appear is you may have run out of memory on the iPad. The new iOS offers more features, and is somewhat bigger than the old. Check Settings > General > Usage and see how much space you have left and what the big space consumers are. You should do housekeeping to get an absolute minimum of 10% of the space on your iPad free. For example, if you have a 16GB iPad, you would need absolutely no less than 1.6GB free.
You said "I do not dare doing another restore ...". On the contrary, you should update your iOS at every opportunity to avoid these giant updates such as you just did. You went from iOS 4 to 6, which means it's been over a year and a half since your last update. If you did them more frequently, they would be less dramatic.

I have changed My DNS to Google and Verizon and now get intermittent connections but mostly failure to connect. I believe this is a DNS issue with Apple domain. Have they modified their address registrations? Why is At&T cellular working but not my wireless that's Verizon ISP?

I see no need to downgrade or restore to factory defaults. It is only spefcific to one wifi network - my work. The one at home works fine. I am wondering if the problem has something to do with iOS 6 not liking the router, or the password, etc. Upgrades shouldn't downgrade functionality - why should I have to use the now inferior OS to maintain wifi functionality - that's ridculous. Does anyone from Apple monitor these forums? It would be nice to get an answer from the source of the issue - which is clearly Apple's new OS because everything was working fine before I upgraded to iOS 6 yesterday.

i downloaded an upgrade from itunes last night to os5.1 i think. it said there was a problem with the download. now my phone will not work at all. it just has a picture of the itunes logo ans a picture of a usb cable on it. my computer will not recognise phone either

I upgraded from vista to windows 7. When I sync my iPhone 4 I am not seeing my music listed nor my apps in the list. I had backed up my entire computer to my external hard drive and copied everything over to iTunes. But not showing up in any lists when I connect my phone???? Any ideas?

I'm am used to working on Mac's but u don't think my advice will hurt.
iTunes reads your hard drive for songs and compiles a song list for them.
It then stores this data as your ituneslibrary.plist file.
In the file drop down menu you should have an option to select library.
Try reelecting your iTunes library icon and then it should reload your iTunes with playlists and play counts etc

I have just upgraded from the standard N95 to the N95 8GB, I did the back up from the old phone however when restoring the files to the new handset it has completely filled the phone memory. There does not seem to be any management of the memory (aka sim/phone of old) I cant see how to make it use the larger mass memory rather than the phone.
Having the phone memory full renders it unable to do anything, like set up a mailbox or choose a ringtone.
Any ideas....
