Upgrade from Mac OS X Tiger to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro that is currently running Max OS X TIger 10.4.11 to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I bought the Mac Box Set. Do I loose all the programmes and files, that I have on my computer while upgrading? Do I have to do a backup of everything before upgrading? How do I best do a backup of everything? Do I loose all the programmes e.g. Final Cut and all the projects that I have in them on my computer now while upgrading? maybe that#s a stupid question, but thanks for your help.

Do I loose all the programmes and files, that I have on my computer while upgrading?
Not unless you choose to erase the drive as part of the process.
Do I have to do a backup of everything before upgrading?
No, but you should anyway.
How do I best do a backup of everything?
Use a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the existing system to another drive or partition.

  • Upgrade from iMac8,1 OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard?

How do I upgrade from iMac8,1 OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard?  I was told it was a piece of cake, but my maschine says that no upgrade is available.
Where to buy or download the Snow Leopard? Havn't found any file on Apple site and elsewhere they does not work?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Snow Leopard is a paid upgrade. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner, insert the DVD and upgrade.
After upgrading, open  > Software Update to install the most recent version. Your Mac is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion, so if you want to upgrade to this version, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. The installer will download, so follow the steps to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Check if your programmes are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

Hi, I have upgraded from a windows computer to a MAC, how do I change the platform for my CS5, thanks

You don't. Platform swaps only apply to current versions. You need to buy at least the CS6 upgrade and make the switch.

  • Will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard delete programs?

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered a million times before, but will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard stop my existing programs (PhotoShop, Office etc) from running? I've got an Intel MacBook but I've never installed a new OS myself, so any tips gratefully received! Thank you.

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

  • Upgrade from tiger 10.4.11 to snow leopard

To upgrade my Imac Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6, must I purchase the Snow Leopard upgrade or the full version of Snow Leopard?  Thank you

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.

Does it say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM?
If it does, you are using the wrong disc.
Since your Mac is compatible with Snow Leopard, unless you have some pressing need to only be running Leopard, and not Snow Leopard, it is cheaper to upgrade to Snow Leopard with the regular retail box for Snow Leopard from the Apple Store. You do not need to buy the Box Set, nor do you need to buy Leopard to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
If you need Leopard for something not compatible in Snow Leopard, call Apple Support as they may still have the retail Leopard available. The online store does not, and only a few used and refurbished Mac shops still have the retail one available.

  • I have mac OS X 10.5.8, can I upgrade to OS X Lion without going through OS X Snow Leopard?

can I upgrade to OS X Lion without going through OS X Snow Leopard?

    Yes.
Instead of upgrade, you can do fresh install Lion into another partition and so you would have multiboot 10.5.8 and 10.7.
If you wish to use the the exisiting 10.5.8 partition to install 10.7 Lion, you can first create a 10.7 DVD. And use the 10.7 DVD to do installation instead.
Here is how to create 10.7 DVD.

  • HT1338 how do i update a mac os x 10.5.8 to current snow leopard

how do i update a mac os x 10.5.8 to current snow leopard?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Mac OS X 10.6.8 it's Snow Leopard?

I am a new user of iMac and want to know if my version of software Mac OS X 10.6.8 belongs to Snow Leopard. I want to confirm it because I want to install the software Lion. Thank you.

Yes, 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard. Anything that is 10.6.x is part of Snow Leopard. On Snow Leopard there is an icon for the Mac App Store. You can purchase Lion from the Mac App Store.
    Or, go to:
     > App Store.

  • Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6 for $29: Can Someone Please Clarify This

My apologies if this has already been resolved or discussed.
I have spoken to numerous Apple employees and support people regarding if I can upgrade my Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard without having to buy the Box Set (which contains many useless programs). Apparently, Apple has conceded that it is possible and many people have said that it works great. My real concern is if whether it will effect my Applecare, etc. I would appreciate if anyone can clarify if it does in fact work and if anyone can pitch in if affect my warranty.
    Thank you kindly.

    Software License Agreement for SL:
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf
    Section 2A:
_Single Use License_. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you have purchased a Family Pack or Upgrade license for the Apple Software,
you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time. You
agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so. This License does not allow the Apple
Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple
    computers at the same time.
Says nothing about one's current/previous OS. It's an install, not an upgrade.
Section 2C talks about an "upgrade license", which refers to the $10 upgrade sold to people who bought their Macs after June 6th, does mention that you must have Leopard installed beforehand. This is not the case for the Single Use or Family Pack versions.
And it can't possibly void your computers warranty, since Snow Leopard didn't exist when you bought your computer.

  • X11 Upgrade from 1.0 and Re-install (Mac OS 10.4.8)

Hi, I have a iMac G5 (PowerPC) running Mac OS 10.4.8 (I upgraded to Tiger from 10.3). Before I upgraded my OS I had installed X11 V1.0 in order to run OpenOffice. When I upgraded, the upgrade was supposed to replace X11 V1.0 with X11 V1.1.3 but it never did. I tried 3 things:
    1) I tried downloading the X11 V1.1.3 upgrade from the Apple website. But when I ran the update, the update stopped saying "my system didn't need the update".
    2) I then went to my applications folder and deleted X11 V1.0. When I tried running the X11 V1.1.3 upgrade I got the same error message.
    3) I restored X11 V1.0. I then inserted the Tiger OS disc and looked for Option Installs. When I tried to checkmark on "X11" the disc wouldn't let me, saying the file was "0 Bytes".
I want to upgrade to the latest version of X11. Can anyone help?

I had the same problem getting Inkscape to run.
The trouble is that the updater on the web site only works on X11 v1.1. Since X11 is an optional install, 1.1 wasn't automatically installed when you upgraded to Tiger. Here's what to do.
Insert the Tiger upgrade DVD. Open Mac OS X Install DVD: System: Installation: Packages and double click on "X11User.pkg". Do the installation. It'll update X11 from 1.0 to 1.1.
Now go back to the "X11 Update 2006" disk image and run the installer. It should go this time, bringing your copy of X11 up to 1.1.3.
