If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

Many are considering upgrading their existing Mac to 10.4 (Tiger) or Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) because of iPhone or iPod compatibility, or other software compatibility. This makes sense, but you have to realize there are both pluses or downsides to doing this.

That will either have to come from your backup, or your original Mac OS 9 installer discs which installed 9 on your Mac. Mid 2002 through late 2005 Macs used a restore utility to restore Mac OS 9 system folders from those original discs. Macs which shipped with 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 can't use the 9.2.1 retail disc to install Mac OS 9, and must use the disc that came with them to install 9 or Classic.
Upgrading to 10.4 and 10.5 introduces a new find file system called Spotlight.
It is much weaker than 10.3.9 for locating files quickly by name. Though if you find files mainly by content, then it is better to have Spotlight. See this thread on how difficult it is to work with Spotlight based systems. Launchbar offers limited Spotlight like features without losing the 10.3.9 and earlier Find File systems on 10.3.9 and earlier.

Upgrade from OS X Tiger to Leopard 10.5.6 on PPC PowerBook G4
I've liked Tiger fine, but now am finding that I can't get the latest updates for Safari and iTunes. I'm not ready to buy a new computer yet. My G4's processor is 1.67 GHz and I have 2GB RAM. Can I upgrade straight to Leopard 10.5.6 or do I need to start with 10.5 and then get updates?
Or should I just not worry about the latest versions of OSX, Safari and ITunes until I can get a new computer in a year or two, or three?

I have a 1.67Ghz Powerbook with 2GB ram running Leopard, and it runs fine. I would recommend it, as it's the last operating system upgrade available for OS X. Depending on your software, you may have to upgrade some, as I did, however, there were no additional charges for any upgrades to run under Leopard.
Call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask if they have 10.5 Leopard available. It's not available in the stores anymore, and if the Apple store is still selling it, it's the least cost new version available.
Whether it's 10.5 or 10.5.6, you'll want to install the combo 10.5.8 update, which provides all updates through 10.5.8, regardless of what you've started with. Repair permissions, then install the combo update, then repair permisssions again. Then run Software Update several times to pick up other updates. The combo update is available from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866 -
Upgrading from 10.3.9 to Leopard
I have an iMac OS X version 10.3.9. This is a Power PC G4 flat panel iMac
I just bought Mac OS X Leopard so I can upgrade in order to use a new Nano, but when I put the installation disc in nothing happens and then the disc eventually just self-ejects. Any ideas?Besides making sure that you have the system requirements you need to know that you cannot do an upgrade from 10.3.9 to Leopard by using the upgrade option it is made for upgrading Tiger.
You need to do an archive and install.
Insert the disk and choose restart from the apple menu.
When the computer makes the startup sound, hold down on the letter "c" until the apple appears on the screen.
The computer will start to the install disk and you need to proceed until you get to the destination screen.
In the destination screen select the hard drive volume and then select the options button.
You will be presented with several options.
Choose to do an archive and install preserving user and network settings.
If errors are found on the internal hard drive the installer will only present you with the option to erase and install.
Only erase and install if you are willing to lose everything on the drive.
If it will not let you archive and install - stop and restart the computer and save whatever you don't want to lose from your hard drive.
If you need help finding how to back up various files like emails, bookmarks, address book contacts, etc. the call applecare.

Why upgrade from Panther to Tiger on G4 iMac?
I have two iMacs. I use a G5 recently upgraded from Panther to Leopard 10.5.5. My wife has a G4 with Panther 10.3.9.
Now that I have Leopard I have a Tiger install license available.
Are there good reasons to upgrade my wife's G4 to Tiger?
She uses it heavily for e-mail, internet, and MS Word.
She's networked to my G5 through Airport and we use printer sharing and file sharing.
Her G4 works great, but I'm wondering about security issues.

I think some of the Panther software is starting to show its age limitations for Internet capabilities, and things like iTunes for all the new iPods, etc. On one hand if you're not actually having problems then my feeling is an old computer best runs software designed for it. On the other hand I am not sure you would lose any functionality if you did upgrade. I think most Panther applications run on Tiger, the system requirements are pretty similar. It's not like when you upgrade to Leopard that you suddenly lose Classic support and it requires (demands?) a faster processor. From my personal perspective upgrading to Leopard really makes a big difference in capabilities both ways and may even be a negative upgrade if you run old software the way I do. Upgrading from Panther to Tiger didn't have any downsides and had several upsides in terms of software is still being brought out for Tiger.

File sharing no longer works after upgrading from 10.3.9 to Leopard
I'm trying to do file sharing on my PowerMac G5 with my MacBook Pro. The problem is when I try to connect to the G5 I get no response.
Powermac G5 was just upgraded from 10.3.9 to Leopard 10.5.6 (clean install, then used Migration Assistant to copy over files). File sharing worked fine on 10.3.9 until I upgraded the G5 to Leopard (the MBP has had Leopard for several months).
MacBook Pro is running 10.5.4.
From the Finder I select Go->Connect to Server. I select "browse", and the window that opens shows my G5 in the list (it's the only one). I double-click on my G5 and near the top of the window it shows "Connecting..." with the little spinner at the bottom right of the window, but that is as far as it gets. Just no response after that.
I tried to Ping the G5 but got no response.
At first I was trying this wirelessly through my Zoom DSL modem, but to troubleshoot I hooked up the two computers directly with an Ethernet cable but got the same result. No response from the G5.
I have File Sharing turned on in the G5's System Preferences. All 5 users have as least their write box shared. I've even set up a separate shared folder in one account.
Please, if you have any ideas please let me know. I'm stuck.

I had the firewall on the G5 set to "allow only essential services", and file sharing was listed but still not working. However, if I change the firewall on the G5 to "Set access for specific services and applications" file sharing would work. I could sit there and toggle back and forth between the two settings and watch file sharing alternately work and then fail depending on the setting.

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. I know, I'm years behind, but it has become a necessity. My Mac is becoming slow and is incompatible with many softwares and websites. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this upgrade? What are the implications and/or consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware? Are there any precautions I should take before the installation? I have read some posts about Macs slowing right down after installing Yosemite. Any insights and information (in layman's terms please!) would be very useful. Thanks.

Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.
Problem description:
I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. 1. What you want to do is check you computer specs to see if it can run snow leopard
the current specs needed are
General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMeservice; fees and terms apply.
2. I would advise you to back up your computers data if you are not currently doing so.
3. Purchase a legal copy of snow leopard from Apple or other certified apple retailers such as best buy and amazon.
4. Insert disk and follow the instructions to install snow leopard on exsiting drive running leopard.
5. When installing snow leopard SHOULD NOT touch your user files such as music or pictures, it should only change the core OS
6. After the snon leopard installation, go to the Apple Menu located on the top left and select software update here you can install the latest verison of the Apple OS -

If you do decide to upgrade, Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (US).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, (as cornelius mentioned) etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.

Having problems upgrading from Panther to Tiger
Hi there!
I'm new to this place, but very desperate to find answers. I have been trying to upgrade from panther to tiger for the past week and have gotten a mess. I have to restore my old panther system after a panic kernal while trying to install tiger. I have tried to upgrade, install and archive and erase and install tiger and the same keeps happening: after 30-30% installation of essentials, I get a "try installing again" message and immediately goes to a blank blue screen. I have to reboot from my eDisk on the external hd and re-install my old system. I've done EVERYTHING I can find on the web and in the install suggestions. Everything has been updated (firmware, sofware, etc.), I tired disconnecting external devices except the keyboard and the external dvd I need to install and still the same thing...over and over and over!
So, now I'm down to the fact that I need to install CDs (internal) instead of DVD off the external drive. However, when I went and downloaded the form for the exchange the Tiger versions listed (MA453Z/A, MA454Z/A) do not coincide with the version I purchased (M96397/A). So I'm trying to figure out what this version is that I purchased and if it has anything to do with my big install mess!

I want to Upgrade from 10.5.8 OS (Leopard) to Lion, and I know I have to Upgrade to Snow Leopard first: can I buy the 10.6.3 installer or do I have to buy the 10.6? Is the same thing? Will they work the same way if I have a 10.5.8?

The Snow Leopard disc which Apple sells includes OS X 10.6.3, so don't worry about that. Also, if you buy a Snow Leopard disc with 10.6, updates until 10.6.8 are completely free through > Software Update. Make a backup before upgrading. After upgrading, open > Software Update, and install the latest version. After updating to 10.6.8, you will be able to upgrade to Lion (call Apple to purchase Lion) or Mountain Lion (you can purchase OS X Mountain Lion in the App Store) -
Be carefull when upgrading from Panther to Tiger
If you choose to upgrade from Panther to Tiger by using the Erase and install option on the Tiger DVD install disk, your XServe RAID won't mount. The problem seems to be that the driver for the RAID won't be updated in the process.
The solution for me was (by advice of Apple Support) to reinstall Panther. My RAID came up fine and I then did a upgrade to Tiger using the update and install.Mattur:When I restart to install the OS, it goes into a Kernel Panic and tells me to restart.I take it to mean that you mean you put the install disk and open it and at the prompt you restart, and it goes into the kernel panic. I notice too that you sayI can reinstall Panther with the disk the computer came with , but I can't install Tiger..In other words there is a problem is with the Tiger disk.
Are you using a Full Retail Version of Tiger? Computer specific versions or update versions will not work.

I am getting blocks of black, vertical broken lines to right of cursor, around applications on desktop and over text on internet. I recently updated from OS X Tiger to Leopard on my G5 powermac. Can anyone advise how to get rid of the blocks of lines?
What graphics card is installed?
Have you looked inside to see if the interior is dusty?
Is the graphics card dusty?
If equipped, is the fan on the graphics card turning?
Leopard uses the graphics card harder than Tiger, so weakness in the graphics card is more easily shown. -
I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?
It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard. -
I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5. Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog including all of the tags, captions, etc, or is Elements 5 too old for Lightroom 5 to read/convert? What's the best way to migrate? (My catalog has over 100k images in it.)
Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.

Hi all, I'm trying to render a locally stored sample pdf using Air 3.2 on Win7 64bit. I'm not getting any error messages and I'm pretty sure the content is being loaded.. but the actual content of the pdf is not displayed when I add it to the stage.
