Upgrade from OS9

I have a G4 that had OS9. I removed 9 and installed 10.4.6 and then upgraded to 10.4.11. I also have a Digi001 interface since I operate a recording studio. The monitor/screen constantly switches on and off ending up with the system becoming unresponsive and asking for reboot.
Do I need to reinstall OS9 and then install tiger? how do I resolve this monitor problem? Is it even a monitor problem?

No, you do not need to reinstall OS9.
One thing, you could get away with slightly defective RAM with OS9, but not OSX.
Use Disk Utility to verify the HD & Repair Permissions, then reboot, reapply the big Combo update for your machine, reboot, repair Permissions, reboot if any are repaired.
PS, if Disk Utility can't verify the disk, you'll have to boot off another drive/partition or the Install CD/DVD to actually repair it.

  • How do I transfer email files when upgrading from OS9 to OS X(10.2.8)?

I upgraded to OS X(10.2.8) and was able to locate and open all the "old" files except the email files (so I reversed the upgrade).
Using Outlook Express in OS 9. Is there a way to find the email files from the OS 10 configuration or somehow export or transfer the email files prior to making the upgrade from 9 to 10?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Apple Mail will import mail from MS Outlook Express. The current version has the import function under File>Import Mailboxes. I think that the version which shipped with 10.2.8 did, too.
MSOE keeps its mail in the Microsoft User Data folder, typically either in the Documents folder or at the root level of your hard drive. If you tell Mail to search for mail form MSOE, it will try to find it in a Microsoft User Data folder. If you've moved your mail, tell Mail where you moved it to.

    Hello Abe,
If it's a Digital Audio or earlier, you need to install a Firmware update first...
As explained in "Mac OS X 10.2 Welcome and Install Manuals" and "Mac OS X Welcome and Install Manuals", you may need to update the firmware on your Macintosh computer prior to installing Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The following table lists the firmware updates that are available for Apple products that can update to Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

I'm trying to get OS10 to install on a Blue and White G3 but the disc (a cd) won't recognize.
Trying to restart from the disc drive generates a disc error2 message.
Holding down the c key on reboot doens't work.
Accessing from start-up menu and the disc is recognized but is greyed out...
tried to target the machine and that didn't work either.
There's 256mb of ram in there.

  • IMac G3 upgrade from os9 to osx 10.2 possible? Please reply asap

Hi, i have a apple iMac G3 DV strawberry machine currently running os9.0.4, it has 20gb hardrive and 256mb RAM.
Is is possible to upgrade the machine straight to OSX 10.2 with the original disks based on the specifications i have given?
Please reply asap, as i would like to get it up and running for my partner

If the iMac's CPU speed is 333MHz or below, you need to partition the drive so that the first partition is less than 8GB, and then install Mac OS X onto that partition.
If the iMac's CPU speed is 350MHz or above, you need to update to 9.1, and then run the iMac firmware updater.

  • Upgrading from OS9.2 on partitioned hard drive

I want to upgrade my Mac G4 from OS 9.2.2 to Tiger OS X v.10.4.6. My G4 has 8 GB, so I got an iomega 400 GB external hard drive.
    1) my hard drive is currently partitioned. how do I go about un-partitioning it?
    2) All my files are in Classic OS 9.2.2 -- Photohop, QuarkXpress, or Illustrator, and i've heard I can retain them on my hard drive while I gain profficiency with the CS2 versions. How do you suggest I do this?
    • Is the 8 GB drive on my computer sufficient for Tiger?
    • can I put the Classic OS on the external drive along with my data files in just a separate folder?

    Jan,
My assumption here is that your Iomega external drive is currently empty. Correct me if I'm mistaken.
    1) If it is empty, go ahead with zeroing and reformatting it. Zeroing will indeed fill all available space with zeros, but the reformatting (erasing or partitioning) part of the process will erase the drive's old directory, which will then free up the space on the drive and allow the zeros to be overwritten by new data. Whenever a drive is erased, only its old directory is erased; the data on it remains there, inaccessible to the user and categorized as available space. The new directory "resets" everything as if it were empty and allows new data to overwrite the old data on the drive as time goes on. That is why zeroing is often used as a security precaution before selling or other disposing of a drive - it completely overwrites any data present, replacing it with zeros.
To zero the drive, load the Tiger install disc in the optical drive and boot to it (depress and hold the "c" key at startup. When the disc finishes loading, select your language as it requests you do, which will take you to the Installer screen. From the Installer screen menubar, select Utilities>Disk Utility to launch Disk Utility. Click on the Iomega drive on the left side of the window to highlight it. On the right side of the window, click the Erase tab to access the Erase option. Name the drive, select Mac OS Extended (with or without journaling - your option) as the Volume Format, check the box to install the OS 9 drivers, then click the "Security options..." button, select "Zero Out Data", and click "Okay". Click "Erase" and the long process will begin... When it's finished, your drive and named volume will appear on the left side of the window.
You can then click on the Partition tab to Partition the drive into multiple volumes (which is a quick process, BTW). When you do, the drive will reformat again, so be sure to check the box to load the OS 9 drivers, use the Mac OS Extended format , and name your individual volumes. Use the Volume Scheme arrows to choose the number of partitions you desire, then adjust the sizes appropriately. Click the "Partition" button to execute.
Quit Disc Utility and use the Installer to proceed with the OS X install on the partition of choice. When done, update your software as may be necessary, and test the system to insure that all went well.
    2) You may simply copy the contents of your internal drive volumes by dragging the folders over to a volume on the new drive. Afterwards, boot to and test OS 9 on the new drive. (You might have to fix/redo some OS 9 aliases on the new drive.) You can use Startup Disk on either OS X (in System Preferences) or in OS 9 to switch between startup systems. Alternately, you may use the Startup manager, by holding down the "option key" at startup to select the system you desire.
Once you're satisfied that both systems are up and running well on the Iomega, you can then deal with the partitions on the internal drive. I would simply erase it and zero it (to map out any bad sectors), using Disk Utility while booted from the Iomega. This will restore it to a single volume. Afterwards, you can copy OS 9 back to the single volume there, if you desire, check it to insure it boots and runs properly, then trash OS 9 from your Iomega. (Note that the OS 9 folder may simply be copied to another volume, but OS X system files cannot. OS X has to be "cloned" to be moved. ...more on this later, if you need info.)
You have 192MB RAM. I would definitely add at least one 512MB module now. You need a minimum of 256MB RAM for Tiger, and it will likely be disappointingly slow with the 256MB minimum amount.
Firmware... You must use OS 9 to do the firmware update, before installing OS X. I don't know which Mac model you have, but here's the link to the firmware page, from where you may download it, if it's not already up-to-date, per your System Profiler.
I have no idea why the System profiler reports the monitor as "Apple". It likely has nothing to do with the video card, though. I will say that System Profiler sometimes reports various things in strange ways... I really suspect that you'll be okay with the monitor, although I obviously can't guarantee it.
OS 9 drivers... OS 9 and Classic under OS X can't be loaded and run from a drive that does not have these drivers installed. Moreover, if they're not installed when a drive is formatted, the only way to install them later on is to erase the drive and install them, which will erase any data you may have on the drive. Thus, it's best to routinely install the drivers on each and every drive you have, then always having the option to load and run OS 9 from them. These drivers take up very little space; and the space that they do take up is not space that would otherwise be user accessible anyway. Thus, you never lose out by installing them, but you might lose out if you don't...
Is there anything else you can think of that I'm forgetting?
Once you load Tiger, use only the Tiger version of Disk Utility to run Repair Disk on the Tiger drive. Don't use the OS 9 version or you'll get errors.
OS 9 has a max volume size limit of 200GB; that is, the max volume size it can address is about 200GB, meaning that you can't install and run it from a volume larger than 200GB. You might keep this in mind should you later decide to load it onto a partition on the Iomega.
Save your pennies for another internal drive. You will then have the flexibility to do easy, complete backups of your external volumes and will have redundant operating systems on both drives, being able to boot externally or internally, should you encounter a problem with one volume or another, or should a drive fail completely. "Life" becomes so much easier and nothing gets lost this way...
Personally, with a large, 400GB drive, and no other suitably-sized internal drive, I'd probably just split it in half so I would have more flexibility in what I might place there down the line (which might even be a clone of my entire OS X volume). I'd maintain the OS 9 installation on the small internal drive as well, so I had another bootable "emergency" drive.

  • Upgrading from OS9 to tiger

    Hi
I have just purchased an imac G4 800mhz 512mb. The operating software it is currently running is Mac OS X 10.1.2
I want to upgrade the software. My intentions are to upgrade the ram to 1GB (Currently 512mb) and I have just finished installing an airport card. Can anyone tell me if I need to purchase Jaguar or panther first before I can run tiger on my machine. What I mean by this is that can I just buy the full version of Tiger and away I go or do I have to buy the versions of the operating system inbetween before my machine will allow me to install Tiger. I am under the impression you can't just jump from 10.1 to 10.4 without first installing 10.2 0r 10.3.
Also will my system run leopard (10.5) or is it best just to stick to tiger, I have read on other forums that Tiger is more stable than leopard on the "slower" machines, which mine clearly is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Various newer products such as iPods, iPads, iPhones, etc have their published minimum requirements
for interfacing or syncing, updating, and so on, with the computer one may use to do this through; and
the information is posted in the Apple Store online and in most documentation.
If you do not need OS 9 as Classic (since you've posted in this OS 9.x Discussions area) you could
start a new thread in the Leopard 10.5 discussion area. However, about this upgrade of unsupported
Macs to Leopard... it may be possible, if the computer is otherwise capable of running OS X 10.5.
A page of information to check out on this topic, is at low end mac online.
    • Unsupported Leopard Installation:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/unsupported.html
You may wish to check into everymac.com to see what the other hardware upgrades your Mac
may sustain, such as the maximum RAM it can use; and also look into the size of the Mac's
hard disk drive, since you really need to give the Mac OS X extra resources to run in older Macs.
Too small of a hard disk drive, or limited available free-space the automatic Virtual Memory needs
would severely hinder the system, any apps running in it, and overall computer performance.
So, consider the possibilities of upgrading RAM and also the size/capacity of the hard disk drive.
In some cases, you may compare specifications for different model Macs with the downloadable
database from MacTracker, for offline use. This covers OS versions, and hardware configurations.
See http://mactracker.ca for information and to get a download for OS versions supported by them.
Since graphics and other processing hardware in a computer that old may not really do well with
Leopard 10.5.8, you may find limited use of some aspects of an upgraded computer once its done.
Anyway, with further questions about a different OS version, you may find better or additional answers
by posting in the Leopard 10.5.8 Discussion area. Oh, some applications may also need to be updated
with an upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 if they are no longer adequate for use in a newer OS version.
Some older computers don't run 10.5.8 as well as they do Tiger 10.4.11; so you may find a better overall
gain by looking into a newer refurbished computer model or one that has been repaired & restored by a
specialist who knows Mac products and can stand behind them. (Not an auction or iffy purchase.) For
newer models, Apple has their online Special Deals/Refurbished items. For others, with less complete
configurations and sometimes lacking software, you could check out specialists who mostly deal with
portable Mac models; ones that can support Leopard 10.5.8 and have better hardware already in them.
The current development is for Intel-based Macs and the older PowerPC-based Macs are fading.
    The link above should cover some aspects of the question you have regarding unsupported installation;
however the rest of the computer may need an upgrade of hardware to handle the system, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Upgrading from 5 to 7. An Idiot's Guide needed

When I first got my Mac, it was just on the cusp of OSX. So it came loaded with OSX and OS9. The shop I got all the kit from set everything up on OS9 with Logic 5 working via OMS.
Now, this has worked fine (apart from a few lack of memory problems) but it's time to move on.
So, I upgraded to Tiger and I've bought the upgrade from Logic 5 (Big Box version) to Logic 7 pro.
Obviously I need more memory, although I'm not sure how much, but what are the practicalities to make sure it works when I first fire it up?
What happens to my old favorite VST's?
    Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent, Stylus,
    My battered old Edirol Orchestral?
I write for TV regularly so I can't afford to have much down-time.
Please someone tell me it'll be OK....
    Cheers
    Rod

OMS was very popular for Mac OS 9 because it managed your MIDI ports and abstracted the software/MIDI relationship to where all we needed to know were the names of the ports, rather than port numbers and stuff like that.
Apple's CoreMIDI structure in Mac OS X is based on OMS (Doug Wyatt, the developer of OMS, works for Apple and has been the primary developer behind CoreMIDI).
If you are still planning to dual boot from OS9, you will use OMS there. However, as far as OS X goes, everything you need is built in and accessed from the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

  • Upgrade From 10.1.2 to Tiger

I have a friend who was using her flat panel iMac mainly in OS9. She wanted to upgrade to Tiger and has been sold the OS but is now worrying that she will have to wipe her entire hard drive to install it. She doesn't want to do this. Will the discs perform an upgrade?

    Hi Danktuft ,
First make sure you buy the retail full install version of Tiger (black DVD). You cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer (gray).
You cannot directly upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x. You will have to either reformat the drive (recommended) or do an Erase&Install. In both cases all your data will be lost, so make sure you have a complete backup!!!
If your computer can boot into OS 9 natively:
I suggest to reformat the drive using the OS 9 install CDs. By reformatting the drive with the OS 9 disk you are safe that all required OS 9 hardware drivers will be installed properly.
    0. BACKUP YOUR ENTIRE HARD DISK - it will be completely erased during the following procedure!
    1. Boot up from the OS 9 install CD and reformat the drive as Apple Extended (HFS+).
    2. Install OS 9 and update it to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
    3. Confirm you can boot into OS 9
    4. Upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades
    5. Insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down th c-key.
    6. Once the installer has started select "disk utility" from the menu.
    7. Select "repair OS 9 privilegies" from the menu.
    8. Repair the disk.
    9. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install (do not select Erase&Install because this would erase your OS 9)
    10. After the reboot Repair permissions!
    11. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC.
    12. Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from Mac OS Z1-9.1 to Mac OS X.3.2 using an old G4

    Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade from Mac OS Z1-9.1 to Mac OS X.3.2 using my spare and old G4.
I have the Installation CD's but for some reason the G4 isn't reading them so i can't update. Do i have to connect to the internet (currently no connection) to upgrade as far as possible first or is this "giant leap" from OS9.1 to OSX.3.2 just not possible in one go..?
    All advice welcome..!

    You're Welcome Shane!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to again purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD, on them.
The discs should also not say "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately."
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media."
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.
Shop Carefully, Examine All Documentation, And I Wish You Success!

  • How do I upgrade from Design Collection?

I've been using Mac OSX10.3.9 via Quicksilver 1.4 PowerPC with 2g's RAM/120g HD. My system ( knock on wood ) is running well with Font Agent Pro 3.x and an HP Designjet 10ps. This setup is a good three years old. No problems proofing, web authoring, page layouts, blah, blah, blah. I've been hesitant in upgrading to CS apps and ignored CS1, CS2, CS3. But, because I am a design studio, I receive CS3 files. I'd like to keep the operating system ( because of its ability to access OS9 apps ) for as long as I can. I'm on a very limited budget and have an existing Educator version of the Design Collection ( Illus. 10, PS7, ID2 ). Question: where can I buy an unopened box of the CS2 Design Premium? I'm not ready for CS3, I'm going to wait until I get new Apple hardware for that transition. Thanks for your help.

    > So, you suggest bypassing CS2 and upgrading to CS3?
It's not so much a suggestion but very strong advice based on many posts
from people who've been taken by software pirates.
You say you have academic versions now. But they're pretty old and I'm
going to guess that you don't have that kind of eligibility anymore so
you really need to buy an upsell version since you don't have a suite to
    upgrade from.
I've got a page on my website where I at least attempt to unravel a lot
of this stuff. You can read it here:
    http://www.theindesignguy.com/puchase-advice.html
BTW, I'll secong Mike's suggestion. You're going to get a good deal more
bang for the buck out of a mid range Windows box. I'm running CS3 on
Vista 64 here and everything runs great. A side benefit is that
Photoshop CS4 will be available in 64 bit for Windows Vista only. You'll
need a boatload of RAM to notice the difference but it will be great if
you're working on very large images.
Again, keep a very close eye on Adobe's September 23 announcement to see
what the upgrade policy will be. If the past is any indication (and it
may or may not be) if you buy CS3 after the announcement it might
include an upgrade to CS4 when it ships.
You can register for the webcast announcing CS4 here:

  • Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro

Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro. I have tried loading in onto a mac book with no luck. I think its because my original FCP 1 loades using OS9 and because the new Mac Pro does not have an old operating system on it I cant load my original FCP.

You should upgrade to FCP 5.1 or 6 as Jerry says.
However, if you are desperate you could try this :-
Install just your FCP 3 upgrade and also put in your FCP 1 serial number when asked.
Whenever you try to open FCP you will probably get an error message. Click the "esc" key and FCP should open.

  • HT1338 How do I upgrade from osx 10.4.11 to 10.5?

Could someone tell me how to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard as I have recently bought the latest ipod touch which won't sync to my mac as I need the newest version of itunes which doesn't run on Tiger, frustratingly.

You can skip Leopard/10.5 & go directly to the cheaper Snow Leopard/10.6 as Niel says.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • Upgrade from 9.2 - can i buy jaguar? i have panther discs

    hi
i've recently bought a second hand iBook G3 Dual USB (i.e. it has two usb ports which I think means it is Dual). it also came with panther discs, which i've tried to install (upgrade from 9.2), but installation is interrupted say ing that i need osX installed already.
Does that mean i need to upgrade to jaguar or a lower version first? I've read so much stuff in the discussions but can't quite find the answer to this one.
From the specifications documents linked in one post, it appears there is no firmware upgrade necessary or available for this model.
thanks a lot for any suggestions
    gs

OS X upgrade discs are relatively rare. Apple generally only does full versions at reasonable prices and as eww says having this disks don't help at all in your case - unless you have Jaguar on the 'iBook Install/Restore CD' but it is not yet installed (Perhaps the previous owner stuck with OS9). Not all iBook Dual USB would have been supplied with any version of OS X.
Froogle turns up several resellers who sell Panther but when you drill down you find most are out of stock (no surprises there). I did find one that was selling it for £95 but for £5 less you can get Tiger (10.4) from the Apple store (so if your iBook meets the Tiger specs you're probably best to go for the more modern OS). I find Panther a lot more stable, but Tiger is much nicer to use.
