Upgrade from PSE9 needed?

I have PSE9 (CD). It does everything i need it to do and I have many actions installed that would not work on later versions. The only reason I would upgrade is if this version no longer would work on new computers in the future...if I could not activate it using the liscense key I have...etc. Do I own this permanently...or will one day I wish i had been upgrading all along? Thanks!

Your PSE9 is yours permanently and it will remain supported through these forums as long as new operating systems continue to support it.
You also need to understand that when you move the package to a new computer (i.e. when you install on a new computer) you need to deactivate it from the old machine otherwise you might have trouble activating on a new machine.  To deactivate, you go to the Menu bar and:
Help >> Deactivate
Apart from this there isn't much you need to do.
Good luck.

  • Upgrading from CS3 - Need advice

Wow, I've been wanting to upgrade from Creative Suite 3 for a long time now but just couldn't afford it. I just now discovered that Adobe is now limiting people to two choices - buy each software program individually or subscribe to Creative Suite Cloud for $50 a month.
That actually doesn't sound too bad, but I started a chat session and learned that I can subscribe for $30 a month. That sounds awesome!
I'm already sold, but I like to do my homework before I take a plunge. Is there any fine print I should be aware of? Can they jack up the price after a year?
If I go for it, I assume I can just install the new software on top of CS3, right? (I'm on a MacBook Pro, by the way.)
I remember there was a lot of grousing about Adobe's cutthroat prices a year or two ago, but $30 a month for all that software sounds pretty good to me. Are most people in agreement there?
Thanks for any tips - and again, I'd like to hear about any details or negatives I should be aware of.

I don't think there's any doubt that the Creative Cloud is a bargain for someone who uses several pieces of the Creative Suite on a daily basis. It's also essential for anyone who needs to have the latest version of the software.
What is important to realize is that it is a subscription service. If you decide to stop paying, as with any other subscription service, you cease to have access to any of its features.
This is a major difference from the previous model, where you bought a perpetual licence, which entitled you to use the software forever without any extra payment. But with a perpetual licence, you get no free upgrades.
As long as people understand what they're paying for, they can choose whichever method suits their needs. For the casual user, a perpetual licence might be the better choice. No upgrades, but the software keeps working (as long as it remains compatible with your operating system). For the professional who needs the latest version without needing to wait, a subscription to the Creative Cloud almost certainly makes more sense.
I have a Creative Cloud subscription. It's the right choice for me. But it might not be for everyone. As long as you know what it is you're buying, you should be in a position to make the best choice for your own circumstances.

  • Upgrade from Tiger needed

I recently got an older, hand-me-down iMac G5 Sight (Intel 2.1 GHz processor) and it has the OS X 4.1 (Tiger) installed.  I'd like to upgrade the OS to a more recent version, but I'm not sure how far I can go (e.g. Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mtn Lion) or exactly how to do this.  I recall seeing a link to an Apple disk that will provide a two- or three-step upgrade, but I can't locate it.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks.

You don't have an iMac G5, you have an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, designated by Apple as "Late 2006". If you have questions in the future it will help if you tell people the correct system type.
Anyway, you can upgrade your iMac up to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, the final version of OS X that will support your iMac. You will first need to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, available once again from the online Apple Store, and get that up to the final version, 10.6.8. If you wish then to upgrade to Lion, you can call the Apple Store, give them your Apple ID and credit card number and will then send you a code which you can redeem in the Mac App Store to download the installer for Lion.
You will also need to upgrade the ram to 2GB minimum to install Lion, and it's highly recommended for Snow Leopard. Your iMac will support a maximum of 3GB, and I'd suggest just upgrading to that; the different in cost from 2GB will be minimal.
Note that it's highly likely that some or all of your applications and peripheral drivers may require upgrading, particularly if you upgrade to Lion which will not run any PowerPC-only applications. So I would strongly recommend that you investigate upgrade paths and costs for applications and peripherals and make sure you can either upgrade for an acceptable price or do without any non-compatible applications before you upgrade.
    Regards.

  • PSE13 upgrade from PSE9 more expensive than buying full version?

Looking into upgrading PSE9 to PSE13. Noticing today that the upgrade price is 79.99 whereas buying the full version all over again is only 69.99(On discount). Any reason why I wouldn't want to just buy the full version again

The upgrade option is a marketing ploy. Buy PSEv13 at the discounted price.

  • Upgrade from PSE9 to 11 (Windows) fails setup.

I am getting the following notice: "The following applications are using files that need to be updated by this setup. Close these applications and click Retry to continue: ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe, dynamiclinkmanager (tynamiclinkmanager.exe)"  Nothing is open for me to close. How do I solve this?

restart your computer and re-try the installation before doing anything else.
if that fails, start task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and end those running processes.

  • Upgrading from iMovie Questions

I need to upgrade from iMovie -- need to because I'm finding that iMovie is somewhat unreliable regarding some of its 'known issues.'
    So ...
I'm trying to figure out what the key differences are between FC Pro and Express. I'm willing to endure any 'learning curve' differences, I just want to figure out if there are any features in the Pro edition that I'll never use and weigh the differences.
    1. Is there any matrix you can point to that does this comparison?
    2. Is there a 'Final Cut Express Studio' that includes all of the software in Final Cut Pro Studio or do they have to be purchased individually.
    3. Are both FC Pro and Express devoid of the 'known issues' that can make working with iMovie somewhat unreliable?
    Thanks for your feedback.

    I found a comparison article here: http://camcorders.about.com/od/videoediting/a/FinalCutCompare.htm
Final Cut Express HD also gives you Soundtrack 1.5 and LiveType 2 for $299.
To get Final Cut Pro, you must by Final Cut Studio for $1299. With this you also get SoundTrack Pro (different from SoundTrack 1.5), Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, and the same version of LiveType (I think).
You cannot buy Final Cut Pro, SoundTrack Pro, Compressor, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro individually.
Since you cannot buy DVD Studio Pro individually, if you buy FCE HD you'd still need to use iDVD (or Toast) to author a DVD Video.
You won't find the same "known issues" as iMovie. There will be different "known issues" as no software package is perfect. Your biggest issue will probably be the learning curve but you can overcome that.

  • If i want to use Icloud i HAVE to upgrade from OSX 10.6 to OSX 10.7 and it doesn't seem to work on my mac book. I thought i had managed then it said i needed 10.7 to be able to upgrade to 10.7??? Who can help? In app store i can only upgrade to M.LION?

    Dear Community members,
the frustration is that Apple decide to go from Mobile me to Icloud, forcing clients to have an upgrade from 10.6 to 10.7, i do this on my iMAc but the agenda and contacts don't get synchronised within Icloud. It only works on iphone and ipad but my IMAC doesn't synchronise although i now have to correct software.
I also needed to upgrade my mac book pro but by that time mountain lion was launched, i can now no longer find in App store how to upgrade 10.6 to 10.7 since Apple wants to promote Mountain lion. I then decided to upgrade my MAcbook pro to Mountain Lion but ididn't go through, process was each time interupted.
So searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7 and after 40 min of downloading the system said that i requiered 10.7 in order to be able to install 10.7.
    Hello IKafka?
Can someone help me, since this has taken me now days and days and with zero result, i have to manually input my appointements and contacts twice since the system doesn't recognise. and I bet that afterwards i will need to invest more time to un-double all the data...
    Günther DAuwen

If you purchased Lion for your iMac, just log into the Mac App Store from your MacBook using the Apple ID under which you purchased Lion and go to the Purchases page. You will be able to download and install Lion there.
searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7
The only place you get get Lion is from the Mac App Store. If you found some other site, that was an illegal copy and almost certainly tied to someone else's Apple ID and hence unusable by you. If the link was just to the Mac App Store, see above.
As to the problem with synchronization to iCloud, that's not a 10.6 question, so I'd suggest you take up that specific issue in either the Lion or iCloud forums, providing full details, and someone there can probably help you sort things out.
    Regards.

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • I have recently upgraded from my iphone 5 to a new phone. My iphone 5 's touch screen does not work anymore. I need to backup my phone, but I can't do it on itunes without my password. Everything besides screen is ok. Is there a way around it? :(

I have recently upgraded from my iphone 5 to a new phone. My iphone 5 's touch screen does not work anymore. I need to backup my phone, but I can't do it on itunes without my password. Everything besides the screen is completely fine-the screen will not recognize my finger anymore. I am not trying to fix the phone, but I need to have my contacts. The pictures have already synced, but I need my password to do a full backup. Unfortunately, I can't type in my password. Is there any way around it? If I take my phone to the apple store, will they be able to help me? I am not willing to replace the screen just to do this, however, so that is out of the question.

Someone else may have a workaround, but, as far as I know, if you cannot interact with the screen on the iPhone, there is no way to unlock it so you can get to your contacts.
Were you saving them to iCloud by chance? If so, you can restore them to your new phone.

  • Upgrading From XP - What you need to know

    Hi,
As many of you are aware, support for Windows XP ends on April 8th 2014.
    What does it mean?
End of support means that Microsoft will no longer issue Windows Updates for XP to maintain the security and integrity of the Operating System.
    Do I Need to Upgrade?
If you are currently using Windows XP for every day activity then it is recommended to upgrade to a supported version of Windows to ensure you are receiving important security updates for your operating system.
In addition to updates, you may also experience compatibility issues with new hardware such as a new printer, document scanner, webcam etc. Most vendors will also move away from writing XP compatible drivers.
I subscribe to security and antivirus software, Do I need to upgrade Windows?
In short, Yes. While these antivirus and security packages do a good job in most cases, they do not unfortunately provide the relevant necessary security updates to maintain the integrity of the operating system. In fact most antivirus packages are reliant
on the operating system updates to maintain security.
Must I Upgrade To Windows 8?
This is a personal choice. Windows 8 is the latest Microsoft operating system, you can also upgrade to any supported operating system such as Windows Vista, Windows 7 or indeed Windows 8. The only obstacle is to find a vendor that still sells licensing for
    the older products.
How can I check If My Computer Is Ready For Windows 8
Windows Upgrade Assistant will assist you to check your computers compatibility with Windows 8
Here is a summary of the system requirements:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
    RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Free hard drive space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM drive
I don't know if my computer is 32bit or 64bit
You will be glad to know that Windows 8 comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.
To see whether a PC running Windows XP is capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows, do the following:
    Click Start.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, your processor is capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows.
If "x86 Edition" is listed then its a 32bit installation
Where can I get Windows 8?
Your local computer store should be able to assist you with a copy. Windows 8.1 is the current version.
    You can also use the
Microsoft compare and decide website to determine which version you require and select the buy now option for online purchase.
How Do I Install Windows 8?
It is important to note that upgrading from XP to Windows 8 will not retain your files. You should back up your files prior to upgrading either by using an external hard drive, or using
    Sky Drive which is Free
Microsoft's Put Together An Upgrade Procedure From XP/Visa to Windows 8
It is also important to note that installing from DVD will require your system to have a DVD drive or if purchasing online you will need a DVD writer drive to write the installation DVD prior to installation.
Feel free to ask any questions which are not covered above.
    Regards,
    M
If you find my information useful, please rate it. :-)

I don't set out to sell anything, I'm an independent writer tasked with writing stuff about things to inform people. We link stuff to help people find things if they want to buy them, but the above isn't a sales pitch, it's info to help people figure out if they want or need something.
I didn't know that there was a cabal of antenna dealers who have been promulgating a myth (as a writer: nicely done there) about the nature of NTSC and ATSC; I hadn't ever considered that the antenna market was that large. When I received the request to write an article about antennas I was actually surprised; antennas don't have the support of major telecommunications companies and I sincerely doubt that there's going to be a run on them because of this article. I saw this as a bit of a public service opportunity to talk about a technology that a small segment would be interested in.
Anyway, I'm not sure we're going to get much farther on this; yes Best Buy sells antennas, but no, they didn't ask for an ad. They asked for an article that focused on how these antennas work and what to look for. Thank you for adding your insight about ATSC - I think that was actually covered in paragraphy three, but it's nice to see it spelled out more directly.
Have a nice day - and if you'd like to discuss this directly, please send me a DM on twitter @thetechnogram

  • Upgrading from 5 to 7. An Idiot's Guide needed

When I first got my Mac, it was just on the cusp of OSX. So it came loaded with OSX and OS9. The shop I got all the kit from set everything up on OS9 with Logic 5 working via OMS.
Now, this has worked fine (apart from a few lack of memory problems) but it's time to move on.
So, I upgraded to Tiger and I've bought the upgrade from Logic 5 (Big Box version) to Logic 7 pro.
Obviously I need more memory, although I'm not sure how much, but what are the practicalities to make sure it works when I first fire it up?
What happens to my old favorite VST's?
    Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent, Stylus,
    My battered old Edirol Orchestral?
I write for TV regularly so I can't afford to have much down-time.
Please someone tell me it'll be OK....
    Cheers
    Rod

OMS was very popular for Mac OS 9 because it managed your MIDI ports and abstracted the software/MIDI relationship to where all we needed to know were the names of the ports, rather than port numbers and stuff like that.
Apple's CoreMIDI structure in Mac OS X is based on OMS (Doug Wyatt, the developer of OMS, works for Apple and has been the primary developer behind CoreMIDI).
If you are still planning to dual boot from OS9, you will use OMS there. However, as far as OS X goes, everything you need is built in and accessed from the Audio MIDI Setup utility.
