Upgrade from Tiger Unlimited to Leopard 10 User License Possible?

Hello:
I have a Intel Xserve that came with an unlimited user license for Tiger. We have less than 10 afp users, so the 10 user license is sufficient. Does anyone know if I can purchase the 10 user version of Leopard and "upgrade" to that?
Thanks much!

I spent over an hour through the apple store web site and cant find a way to upgrade directly from Mac OS 10.4 Tiger to the latest Snow Leopard version.

this has been oft asked and answered. you can buy a Macbox set which will give you snow leopard, ilife and and iwork. or you can buy a $29 standalong snow leoaprd dvd although there is a big disagreement on the board whether using it to go from tiger to snow leopard directly violates ULA (I think it does). but the actual disk is the same as in the macbox set and either one will upgrade you to SL.

I have an Intel Desktop iMac and I am upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I keep getting an error when it tries to load the Mac OS X update combined. It says that it was corrupted during download. Have try loading from Apple website  Mac OS X V10.6.7 upgrade combined but it still won't do it? Any other suggestions. The printer is not working either - I am not sure if they are connected. Everything else is fine.

Please excuse, but I have to ask an obvious question: Did you already update using the Snow Leopard Retail install DVD? (You must do this first; 10.6.7 is just an update if you already have 10.6.) Are you, then, trying to update from whatever version was on the install DVD to 10.6.7?
Otherwise, I'd keep trying. The 10.6.7 Combo is a huge update.

    Hi,
the Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit only processor and not capable of 64-bit.
Only the Core 2 Duo and later processors are capable of 64-bit.
    Sorry

  • I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard...I'm apprehensive about Lion.

I've been hearing so many "glitch" anecdotes about Lion. Until these problems are resolved
I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard but I'll be buying a new Apple computer to
    do that..
I presently have a a 10.4 iMAC with only 2.33 GB of memory and I'm getting a new puter
in order to have 4 GB. Is it recommended to use Lion with a new Apple computer or can I use
Snow Leopard without missing out on anything? Are the stories about Lion just the usual thing
that always happens with a new upgrade? Tiger has worked perfectly for me for 6 years but that
has been on computer that is 6 years old. (POWERPC) Does a new iMAC computer with intel
require the latest operating system to work at top efficiency? Is my apprehension about Lion
an over reaction to anecdotal info?

Some of this is answered best by knowing what model computers are involved. If you are truly getting a brand new (as opposed to a newer used) computer then it will likely come with Lion installed, unless there's some old stock (which even then would have Lion installed but could still run under Snow Leopard which you would have to buy separately).  Macs will normally only run the version system that comes installed, or newer, so if you are getting a brand new Mac you won't have any choice but to run Lion (or its successors). It won't run Snow Leopard unless it is a new used computer.
As for Lion stories, those would best be answered on the Lion forum. I still run Tiger which I why I'm on this forum.  There's always issues with any upgrade.  For me the biggest drawback to Lion is all my software is PPC generation and Lion stopped supporting PPC completely. If I got a brand new computer I would also have to upgrade all my software which could easily run to over a thousand dollars more.

#1 Do a complete bootable backup of your drive before upgrading. That way should anything happen you can revert back to the start and try again.
Make sure you meet Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You might also want to make sure you don't have software issues with SL:

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

  • Troubles with upgrade from tiger to snow leopard

I just bought the full SL pack to upgrade from Tiger to Snow leopard but it is coming up with a different interface than my brand new macbookpro that came with sl installed. Is this normal or does it have to do with the fact that the old macbook pro is the first version of the intel macs?

I see. Your need to drag them to the right side of the demarcation line--the white squares in perspective. They don't work under the line.

  • Clarification on upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I know that this topic has been covered, but Apple's wording makes me very curious, and I am wondering if it is still actually possible to install Snow Leopard on a Tiger machine without buying the box set.
They say that Tiger users should buy the box set, but it doesn't explicitly say that Tiger users MUST purchase the box set. Furthermore, the system requirements only state that the Leopard installation requires an Intel-based mac, which could include systems with either Tiger or Leopard.
My guess is that the box set simply includes the exact same Snow Leopard install disc and also has the updated iLife software so that Tiger users can be up-to-date. Although, it is always possible that Snow Leopard won't install on a Tiger mac without the iLife discs I suppose...
I am not trying to be cheap, I'm already purchasing SL for my Intel Mac Mini that already has Leopard, but I'm wondering if I should spring for the family pack to also install it on my Tiger-based Intel Macbook. There's a pretty big price leap between the $49 family pack and the $229 box-set family pack.
If anyone actually tries this or knows a definitive answer, other than the vague wording on Apple's webpage, I'd love to know! Thanks much.
    Nate

I see where you're coming from.
The site reads "Upgrade from Leopard for just $29". There's nothing that says you can't upgrade from Tiger for $29.
It also says "Snow Leopard is an upgrade for Leopard users and requires a Mac with an Intel processor". Technically, Snow Leopard is also an upgrade for Tiger.
The boxed set is tagged "Upgrade your Mac experience: With Snow Leopard, iLife ’09, and iWork ’09 all in one box, the Mac Box Set is the best way to upgrade your Mac experience, especially if you’re still using Mac OS X Tiger."
There is no mention of an "upgrade edition" of Snow Leopard anywhere and there's no verbiage to suggest that there are version checks on the $29 disk. There is nothing stating that you can't use the $29 disk to upgrade Tiger.
While the marketing pushes you that direction there is nothing anywhere that says that Tiger users MUST buy the boxed set.
There is no evidence that there is a technical or licensing limitation preventing using the $29 Snow Leopard disk to be used to upgrade Tiger 100% legally.
Everything is so carefully worded that it's not unreasonable to suspect that Tiger users can upgrade to Snow Leopard with the $29 disk legally and easily.

  • Upgraded from tiger to snow leopard, can I go onto lion?

I have recently upgraded from tiger (I think) to snow leopard, can I go onto lion?
I have a imac 17" 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, I think I bought it in 2007, I don't use it for much but a bit of browsing storing photos and music and maybe a couple of documents.
I have been told by some that if I go to Lion it would be a risk and slow the computer down, so just wondering what you all think.
    Thanks in advance,

According to unofficial sources, you can upgrade to 4GB RAM. I've done the same in my late 2006 iMac 20" which is offically upgradable to 3GB, but I stuck 2 x 2gb modules in anyway (mainly as I had one spare from my MPB). It's dead easy to do, I'm in the UK and bought Crucial memory which I've always trusted.
I believe the Mac will still only use about 3.3GB of the available 4GB RAM, however some people have reported better performance as both modules are the same size and this helps.
Probably worth getting 2 x 2GB given it's not that expensive. You can always keep your old RAM incase anything goes wrong.
I'd do this regardless of upgrading to Lion or not, the extra RAM will help.
BTW, regardless of a lot of the negativity, I love Lion, it speeded up my other 2007 MBP like it was a new machine. The iMac seems okay, although that is showing a few signs of some graphics glitches, but I don't think this is anything to do with Lion, more about overheating.
Best thing to do, is to clone your existing system (using Disk Utility or SuperDuper or CopyCloner) so that you can boot off that or restore it at anytime without losing anything of your setup.
Then clean install Lion (there are instructions about on how to do this, and create a bootable USB key). You can then migrate back your user settings from your clone to the Lion install. Or just upgrade Snow Leopard. Depends on whether you believe in fresh installing everything.
If you don't like Lion, or it's slow or whatever, you can always restore your snow leopard system from the clone.

  • Safe To Upgrade From Tiger To Snow Leopard?

Is it safe to upgrade a Mac from Tiger straight to Snow Leopard, therefore bypassing Leopard?
If you're running Tiger on your Mac, can you insert the Snow Leopard Install DVD and run it as normal, and the upgrade will go fine?

    Hi Reuben
I think other folk have covered the potential 'gotcha' of data loss by suggesting you do a back up first. I went from Tiger to Snow Leopard directly by way of the family boxed set on both a MacBook and an older Mac Mini. Of course there is no "Time Machine" app on Tiger so back up consisted of copying all personal data to an external drive and copying it back after completing the OS upgrade by installing from the DVD. I didn't attempt to update AND keep any data, the thought of a nice, clean, new installation was irresistable.
The only issue I've had since the upgrade has been a minor niggle, which is that while I can use the 'sudo' command when logged in as the main administrator, additional users, even if they are assigned "administrator privileges", cannot use 'sudo'. Maybe I should look for answers to this elsewhere. It may not even be related to the Tiger -> Snow Leopard upgrade.
    Go for it :-)

  • Price for Upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

As the topics says, my question is how much it will cost to upgrade my Tiger to Snow Leopard if its released.
Any ideas? I did read that Leopard to Snow Leopard Upgrade has a price of $29. Did this means, I have to buy Leopard and Snow Leopard because I am currently only Tiger user?
    Greetings
    Schaelle

Those who have Intel Core 2 Duo processors will apparently see significant performance boosts with Snow Leopard. SN is also much smaller than Leopard. From [Apple's press release|http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/06/08macosx.html]:
Users will notice a more responsive Finder™; Mail that loads messages 85 percent faster and conducts searches up to 90 percent faster;* Time Machine® with up to 50 percent faster initial backup;* a Dock with Exposé integration; a 64-bit version of Safari® 4 that boosts the performance of the Nitro JavaScript engine by up to 50 percent** and is resistant to crashes caused by plug-ins. Snow Leopard also includes an all new QuickTime® X, with a redesigned player that allows users to easily view, record, trim and share video to YouTube, MobileMe™ or iTunes®. Snow Leopard is half the size of the previous version and frees up to 6GB of drive space once installed.
There's also an interesting article in [last week's PC World|http://www.pcworld.com/article/166344/snowleopard_taps_into_the_macs_corepower.html].
According to the article, the main Snow Leopard performance boost comes from parallel processing across multiple CPU cores and graphics hardware processors, not just from the increased RAM address space.
We'll have to wait for further real-world tests, but an additional $29 may be a good buy for those Intel Core2Duo owners who already have or were planning to buy Leopard.

  • Upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard with retail DVD.

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I've not been able to find it when searching.
I'm going to be upgrading an iMac from Tiger to Snow Leopard, using the retail DVD. When I boot from it, it only gives me the option to install, and there's no indication that it will be upgrading rather than installing a new copy.
Can you upgrade Tiger to Snow Leopard with this DVD or would I have to do a clean install? If I can upgrade, is it normal that it isn't telling me it's going to do an upgrade?
    Thanks all.

The Snow Leopard installer is somewhat optimized for updating an existing system: it uses data gathered from the old system to decide what to install, its network settings to attempt to access an Apple database of incompatible apps to supplement the list on the DVD, & other useful things.
It even does the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step before writing anything to the HD & does the actual upgrade as root user, making permissions issues a moot point.
There is no reason to hesitate to use it in this way. It is greatly improved compared to earlier OS installers.
