Upgrade g770 motherboard to G780

Hi I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade my G770 motherboard to a g780 one.
The case looks like it has the same in respect to the ports and stuff.
Any help gratefully received.

hi timWheeler,
I think It might not fit OK with the G780 Board
Due to Limited Resources about it aside from Screenshots of the Base cover and Motherboard
Normally for Parts compatibility with other Devices or model, Lenovo or other Part Resellers would use the same part and mark the compatibility for others
Like for Battery,AC Charger, Keyboard and LCD
But for your concern Both have Separate part numbers
31050112 G770
90201148 G780
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

  • Is it possible to upgrade the motherboard/graphics in my dv7-4177nr?

When I first bought this laptop it had decent, not great, performance in regards to video game graphics capabilities.  Requirements for video games are constantly evolving and my graphics card is no longer sufficient for new games.  I was wondering if it is at all possible to upgrade the integrated graphics (ATI Radeon HD 5470, I believe) of my dv7-4177nr by purchasing a new motherboard.  If so, what are some model numbers of compatible motherboards?  I would really like to avoid the purchase of a new PC/laptop as this one is only about 1.5 years old I think.
    Thanks!

Yes it is.... I own a dv7-4177nr myself and talked at length with HP... if you can find the right motherboard (oem) and don't mind doing the work yourself it is doable. Keep in mind you have to swap out the motherboard (mobo) with another because the gpu and sundry is built into the mobo and not detachable like a desktop setup. Also if all you want is a gpu upgrade and are lucky enough to have a PCI card slot there are several options that you can upgrade your gpu to a desktop gpu which eliminates the need to swap motherboards and just run a graphics card (gpu) for gaming or streaming purposes...

  • Compliant - G780 BIOS Upgrade Broken laptop

    Hi
(Not quite a dup of: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/Lenovo-G780-not-working-after-BIOS-update/td-p...
Please take this as a warning to anyone about to upgrade to the newest (Apr 2013 BIOS for Windows 8)
Im very unhappy atm, I have installed the upgrade and like the person in the other post my laptop no longer works!
I have tried the workaround someone suggested on the other post and initially it seemed to work, however turning off UEFI has meant I no longer have VT-X support for virtualisation I bought the higher end spec so I could run my development VMs on the laptop, but no I cant unless I remove all the fancy stuff from the VM itself, and as I run Visual Studio and Sql Server on my development VM thats impossible... all these things worked prior to the upgrade.
Lenovo need to pull the upgrade for G780 or apply a fix immediately, (perhaps a downgrade for the BIOS) because I currently have a £600 worthless paperweight and all I can find for contact is expense 0845 numbers...
    So not best pleased
    Lee

"all these things worked prior to the upgrade."
So what was the reason for the upgrade to start with ? It seams as though you just broke it for no reason..
Its not cheap computers that are the problem, its the people that can now afford to use them thats the problem.

  • Audio not working after Windows 10 upgrade (Lenovo G780)

After my upgrade to Windows 10 on my Lenovo G780, it seems like my audio isn't functioning anymore. I tried to plug in my headset as well to check if I had audio coming through that, but it does not appear in the Playback Devices window when plugged.  The laptop comes with Conexant SmartAudio HD and also lists High Definition Audio Device under Device Manager.  Could anyone help me out and let me know if there's some problem I am overseeing.  I found a page that has some Conexant software for windows 10 but I am not sure if they are updated drivers or if they even support my machine (the page does not list support for G780). Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Well, it has been a long road on the Win 10 upgrade. At first I got the same error message as above, but after deleting the Dolby Advanced Audio v2 in Win 10 using Control Panel Programs and Features and rebooting, I got into the continual BSOD upon reboot. Here are the steps I took to at least get stable on Windows 10. First, I rolled back to Windows 8.1 using the advanced feature in the BSOD recovery options. Once back in Win 8.1, I deleted the Dolby Advanced Audio v2 using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then I downloaded the Win 10 update and re-installed it. Once that completed, I updated the Intel Graphics driver under the display adapters (on my G780 it is an Intel HD Graphics 4000, and the driver can be found at  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/). Currently I am running version 10.18.10.4252 for my machine. Then, under the Device Manager, I updated the Conexant SmartAudio HD driver under the Sound, video, and game controllers. That driver is currently at 8.66.4.50 and was automatically downloaded from the web when I requested to update driver.  I also changed several others settings such as Notify to schedule restart after updates are installed instead of automatic (under Settings --> Update & Security --> Advanced Options) and Do you want Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices? --> No, let me choose what to do, never install driver software from Windows Update.  After that, I shut down the machine, waited a moment and booted back up. I have no idea why this helped or if it is overkill, but I am stable and running without a fear of rebooting now. Hope this helps if someone else is having this same issue.

  • G780 Won't Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro

Several attempts to upgrade my brand new G780 from w8 (pre-installed) to w8 Pro 8 have failed.
The new pro key is accepted, the install proceeds, after a long hour or so the installation finishes, but with an error message 'Couldn't add features ... contact Microsoft Support'.  Front line MS Support couldn't fix it.
I believe the problem is the original w8 product key burned into the BIOS.  All installs go back to that instead of using the new upgrade key.  I've tried installs with both a new Pro CD and online.
Anyone know how to fix this?  It's very annoying!
(It's also difficult to understand why Lenovo advertises the G780 as a desktop replacement with an OS that won't even join a domain.  I have another two G780s to deploy, but they are staying in their boxes until this gets resolved.)
    Thank you

    hi DaveStanley,
    Welcome to the Forums.
You may want to check this article by microsoft as it's similar to your issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2796988
The solution was to repack the Windows 8 ISO with a pid.txt file in the \sources folder.
    The pid.txt file should contain:
    [PID]
    Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
where XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX is the product key.
Try to repack the ISO and burn it on DVD or a USB key and try to install Windows 8 Pro again.
    Let me know your findings,

  • Upgrading G780 to Windows 8 pro

When I perform a fresh install of Windows 8 pro over the installed Windows 8 standard, I will still need the original OS in case I were to ever want to reinstall Windows 8 pro. This upgrade will pretty much eliminate that original version that came with the laptop. How can I save the original version on a disk in order to reinstall Windows 8 pro if needed?
On another note, I would like to either get rid of the other partitions that come with the G780 or at least partition the C: drive but that prevents any recovery of the OS using the installed recovery option since the partition needs to be the same size as it was when you bought the computer. At least that's how I interpret it. How do I get around all this? Thanks in advance.

    hi imann08,
You can create a Recovery Disc with the preloaded Windows 8 just in case you will need to restore the original OS in the future (which also includes instructions on how to restore the preloaded Windows 8 even on a blank HDD or in a partition with Windows).
    Hope this helps.

  • G770 hd upgrade to SSD. Reinstalling Windows

    Hi,
I'm intending to replace the HD on my new G770 with an SDD drive and replace the DVD drive with the HD in a caddy. Hardware wise I know exactly what I am doing and this should present no technical issues for me.
My question is where I stand with installing W7 on the sSD drive. It seems from reading threads on here that the recovery tool; will only reinstall W7 back onto the original drive that the laptop came with. Have I got this right? Obviously after paying for a valid licence for W7 when I bought the laptop I don't want to shell out now for another copy. Is there any way to crate discs that can install Windows.on the new SSD drive?
If anyone has any tips or info I'd appreciate it.
    Cheers

Get the Win 7 iso file to create a dvd here:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Install and use the Microsoft COA code from bottom of laptop to activate.
Use Win 7 Backup and Restore to create Disk Image and do
    routine backups.
Lenovo recovery tool not needed in this case.
(May or may not install to new SSD, due to size differences)

  • Lenovo G780 SSD Upgrade

    Hello,
I have purchased a 512Gb Samsung 840 Pro, and I am not sure how to get a new copy of Windows 8 onto it without re-purchasing the operating system.
Basically, I want to do a FRESH install of Windows onto this SSD, because of the bad experiences I've had with hard drive cloning.
However a fresh install raises a couple of questions.
First, Lenovo has put custom optimizations (like BIOS optimizations, faster start times, faster shutdown times, sleep times, etc) into the system. When I do a fresh install of Windows, will I lose these Lenovo system optimizations?
Second, how would I get a copy of Windows 8, since it is already installed on my machine by the manufacturer, would I still have to buy another copy for use?
    Thanks in advance.

    hi kuakeye,
If you're G780 came with a regular 5400RPM HDD then Installing 512Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD will make your PC boot much faster as the read/write speed of the SSD will outperform the regular HDD (you PC will be much faster even if you lose the custom lenovo optimizations).
In doing a fresh install, you will need to have one of the following:
    1. A recovery disc - you will need to contact lenovo for this (fees may apply)
    2. If your PC came with a Win8 Standard, you can borrow a Windows 8 standard disc to clean install Windows 8 (Windows will be automatically activated via the OA3 key or you can activate it by phone).
    3. If you have a Windows 8 retail key, you can create a bootable Windows 8 disc / USB using this method and use it to clean install the OS on the SSD.
    Best regards,
    neokenchi

  • Upgrade Cpu on a HP1858 motherboard

I am looking to upgrade the Current Intel Celeron B830 CPU from my Compaq CQ58-260SA notebook.
I have maxed out the memory to 8GB, the Laptop has a HP 1858 Mainboard/Motherboard. Which i believe holds the G2 Socket.

  • Truckee Motherboard RAM Upgrade

I would liek to confirm that this product:
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Desktop Memory Model F3-8500CL7Q-16GBRL
Will work on the Truckee board. My boss put in 4 Dimms of Corsair XMS3 (4x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CMX8GX3M4A1600C9) which the board clearly does not support. It will only see them as 2 gig and often if its been running a bit and you start a new program, will try to access memory it cant see and simply go black screen and turn off.
to fix this I would like to put in this product listed at the top of the post. i want to make sure it will work this time though, and cannot find an approved memory lsit (highly irregular) for this board.

Thank you for the additional information.

This is my concern, also.  I have seen instances where enthusiast memory will not work properly in some HP computers.  HP has their boards made to their specs.

  • Replacing Motherboard on HP Desktop PC

Considering there are too many issues with the Pegatron IPISB-CU (Carmel2) motherboard on a HP PC that is 4 years old such as my blu-ray drive and dvd drive not working both at once, video card fan died and not going to spend countless of hours trying to find the same replacement for a video card that won't play new games. Also newer cards have new UEFI bios that aren't compatible with the Pegatron board I have and most companies won't do custom BIOS to make the card work with the motherboard. I have thought about replacing the motherboard and try to push it another 2 years. However I have a few questions about this process.
First of all, WILL the Intel Intel Core i5 2400 currently on the HP PC will work with another different board or is it LOCKED to the current motherboard configuration and won't work with any motherboard replacement? How about the memory sticks? I know Intel makes their products to be compatible with their own products and upgrading/replacing with other non approved HP parts won't work with their products.
How will my Windows 7 installation will be affected by the motherboar replacement? Will I have to do custom/clean install of Windows 7 or will I still be able to use the Recovery Suite in the PC for re-installing Windows 7?
I do not plan to upgrade the PSU on the PC because I am shopping for a low power video card (can't afford it.) And I also know that if I upgrade the motherboard I know that I will loose the Wireless/Bluetooth card and the card reader because it has a secondary power intake that I haven't see in any other motherboard configuration.
Or just scrap the system and start from scratch. I just can't believe my luck 900$ down the drain in less than 4 years.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

First, replacing the motherboard that will accept the components is not that difficult, just need to do some searching.  The Windows install will not like the new motherboard, so expect to purchase a new retail copy of your choice.
If you do not plan on a high power video card, then possibly the present PSU will be OK.
I suspect the new motherboard that will accept the present CPU will also accept the memory, as they are usually of the same technology.
The BluRay drive and the DVD, if working, will probably transfer also.  You will/could probably still use the same case and the card reader by keeping the case.  Unkown about the bluetooth card, but typically they use a commonly found PCI slot

  • G780 hard drive issues/hidden partition

I just bought a manufacturer refurbished (allegedly) g780 with a 500 GB hard drive. I did a clean install of Win 8, downloaded a bunch of updates from Microsoft, and then updated to Win 8.1 and downloaded a bunch of drivers and utilities from Lenovo.
With that out of the way, the Lenovo Solution Center prompted me to perform a hardware scan, which found errors in my drive and gave me this code: WHD01V00I-HJ9V6L (the drive failed the targeted read test and the SMART short self-test). I scanned the drive with windows error checking, fixed the errors it found, and when scanning the drive again I'm told no errors were found, however the Solution Center still gives me the same errors.
Here's where it gets interesting. The hardware scan also indicated that my hard drive is in fact 1 TB in size, and using testdisk to have a look at my partitions I found a 450 GB Ubuntu partition (along with a Linux swap partition) that I can browse through and recover files from. I wanted to boot into this partition but didn't know how to go about it.
So my primary concern is about the hard drive and whether it's a ticking time bomb, hoping that perhaps those errors are caused by the hidden partition and the drive is physically fine. And if the drive is in good shape I'd like to get rid the Ubuntu partition and reclaim all that space.
Can anyone help me figure out what's going on with my machine?

    Hello
This partition is about 1,5 GB and I think it is not so important for you if you have 160 GB HDD. I believe you will not use it till the last byte is used. Am I right?
To be honest I would like to know what you mean with copy. After HDD upgrade use recovery media and make clean OS installation. After doing this copy all your important files to new HDD. I recommend you also to create two or more partitions. The first one for OS, and other for data saving.
What you can also do is to create own recovery image after finishing with clean OS installation and configuration. I have done the same. Now if something goes wrong I can make my own OS installation anytime and save a lot of time installing all applications.
