Upgrade graphics card, or add second monitor?

I have an Aperture rebate that needs to be used by the end of this month, but what to spend it on?
I have a dual core 2.3 G5 PM with the stock 6600 graphics card. What would be the better choice, upgrade that graphics card (I have some questions on that, below) or add a second 20" ACD?
Questions on cards:
1. The Apple Store is offering two PCI-e cards that appear on the Aperture recommended list: the 7300GT and the X1900XT, but the store says that they're for the Mac Pro. Will they work in a PCI-e PM anyway, or are they really only for Intel boxes?
2. The 7300GT is cheaper than the 6600. Que?
Colour me unadventurous, but I don't really want to get into flashing cards, or buying unsupported cards (not that I could f=do that from Apple anyway.)
With respect to the second monitor route, anyone had any experience with two 20" ACDs and the 6600? Other than it may be a bit pants with Aperture, what is your experience?
I'm not an Aperture hard core user, in fact I've found it difficult to whip up much enthusiasm for using it at all until recently, so I don't need a killer card like the 4500.

As far as I know there is NO graphics card
upgrade for G5 towers in the Apple Store.
Thanks, that looks like a card upgrade from the store is a no-go then.
Radeon X800XT,
According to the store, that's AGP.
Looks like my options on the rebate are:
1. second monitor
2. Shure earphones to replace the cruddy ipod ones
3. do nothing and donate the money to Steve's retirement fund.
Not sure how well a second ACD would work with Aperture and my 6600, or whether I want to give Apple another CHF880. And I don't think Steve needs the money.

    Hi:
Unfortunately in most of today's notebooks (including yours), the graphics cannot be upgraded.
I looked at the service manual for your notebook, and there aren't even any other motherboards with better graphics available.
You can try the latest drivers from AMD to see if that helps, any but you can't do anything with the hardware.

You will need to purchase and use a USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 (or any of the many other adapters on the market) to connect an external display to your computer. I personally use and recommend the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39.

    Hi:
Graphics adapters cannot be upgraded simply.
You would need to replace the motherboard with one that would have better graphics (if one exists for your model).
This would cost as much as buying a new notebook, so it is probably not a good idea to undertake such an endeavor.

  • What upgrade graphic card do i need for a early 2008 mac pro

I have a early 2008 Mac Pro.  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB is what i have now.  What is a good upgrade graphic card to get.

The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950. The same can't be said of the GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti or Radeon R9 280X -- all of which require an auxiliary power feed to avoid a nasty power down of your tower at the worst moment when too much wattage is demanded of the Mac Pro's factory power supply.
Did I mention that the GTX 780 with 6GB of GDDR5 matches the 6GB of GDDR5 in the TITAN?
The one fallacy to my 'sweet spot' award has to do with OpenCL. In case you hadn't noticed, the AMD Radeon GPUs smoked the NVIDIA GeForce GPUs running Photoshop's OpenCL accelerated Iris Blur filter and rendering LuxMark's OpenCL accelerated Room scene.
So depends on budget, whether you want a PC card for less but no "early EFI boot screen" prior to drivers loading, and what apps and needs you have.
The one thing for sure is that 2600XT should have been retired ages ago and even more so with 10.8.3 and above, it could be trouble or just... PITA/POS.

  • Upgrading graphic card on HP DC 8300 CMT

    Dear HP,
I try to upgrade graphic card, on HP DC 8300 CMT (Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor, Intel HD Graphics 4000 )
with Nvidia Asus GeForce GTX 650 Ti.
As stock power supply doesnt meet requirements, I installed an additional  FSP Group Booster X5 450W.
Once I turn PC on, it reboots 3 times, and eventually it continues to use onboard graphic and windows 7 loads as usual .
like if new graphic card is not present. (not detected by windows)
Bios version is latest and particular option  for disableing integrated graphic is grayed out- not accessible.
Is there any explanation why this happens ?
On DC 8100 sff It automaticaly disabled onboard graphic, altough it was low consumption Radeon HD 7750 Low Profile card, and there was no any problem.
    Regards.

  • [Solved] Problems after upgrading graphics card

I just upgraded my 8800GTX to a GTX650. I ran "nvidia-xconfig" initially then "nvidia-settings" to make sure both of my monitors looked good. After rebooting I have Openbox running on only my "main" screen. I can move my mouse to the second screen, but when I do the cursor changes to the default X one and I can't do anything there. I also can't drag windows to my secondary screen.
I figure it is something to do with twinview not working properly, or some other xorg.conf configuration problem. Here is a link to my xorg.conf: http://pastie.org/private/zo9fikanxumf4haqaya2eg
    Any help would be great.
EDIT: Solved. In nvidia-settings I needed to set both displays to the same X screen

In your motherboard manual it describes how to re-set the CMOS. Taking out the battery would work but it's easier to re-set the CMOS via the jumper pins. It also holds info on bios features and settings in the manual so you might want to scan through that and see if there's anything you might change.
Have you tried the graphics card in another computer? Do you get the same problems?
Ok - I now found out which jumpers to change - thank you.
I have tried putting my old graphics card back in but still had the problem.
On Sunday someone is going to switch ram chips (his are good in his machine) with me and hopefully we'll establish whether or not my physical ram modules are ok.
Seem very strange to me that both of my modules (one was ok a month ago and the other just arrived from Crucial) fail the same test - memtest #7 - random memory but then I'm only an egg when it comes to this stuff.
Many thanks for everyone's help !
    Mike
Well I don't know if it's good news or bad news !?
Have just tested my system with a known to be good ram module and ?
My machine failed Memtest #7 - the machine that the 'borrowed' ram came from passes the test.
So I will reset the bios I guess.

  • H8-1234 upgrade graphics card

    HP Expert Day!
The graphics card on  my h8-1234 doesn't do so well with modern games, so I bought a Radeon R7 260X to upgrade it.
I upgraded the PSU to 500W, checked the voltage to the 6-pin connector, and put the card into the slot. Fry's checked the card already, so I know it's not the problem.
The computer does not start up. All the fans spin (on the R7 and pre-existing), but the monitor stays black. The power light on the monitor dims for a couple seconds every now and again.
The boards are full of people with similar problems, but no definitive answers as to how I can get this to work.
AMD tech support said my hardware is fine, but HP has something going on that only HP can tell me how to change.
    Things I've already tried:
    1. Updating the BIOS. I've done this three times, each time with a "Success! Restart now?" message. When the computer comes back, the BIOS version is the same as pre-update.
    2. Turning off Secure Boot and turning on Legacy Mode in the BIOS startup. These are the defaults already. This solution seems to only apply to Windows 8/8.1 users.
I hate to trash this PC and build my own, but it's looking like that's all I can do at this point. So, I'd definitely appreciate any help.

    Hi,
Try the latest posted BIOS update for your PC.  I keep my PCs on UPS to avoid power outages and spikes which is improtant when doing a BIOS update. There is always some risk to updating the BIOS.  Keep your data backed up.

  • Best way to add second monitor with HDMI input

I have a 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac.  Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo  Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM  Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB.  I need to add a second monitor, and while I'm at it, this new monitor will be an HDTV Monitor with an HDMI input.  My iMac has the original USB connections.  So I'm thinking an ethernet to HDMI adapter should do the trick.
Is this right?  If so, what supplier makes a good ethernet to HDMI adapter?

    Hi
I've always thought powered DVI (ADC) was introduced on the Gigabit Ethernet G4s, like your dual 500. It should be easy to check, as the graphics card has an extra power 'stub' which fits into an extra slot on the logic board, between the main AGP slot and the back of the computer. If all the gold connectors on the Radeon 9000 are seated, I think you must have powered DVI/ADC. If some are 'floating' above the logic board, you haven't.

  • Upgrading graphics card in 2008 2.8 ghz 8-core

I'd like to upgrade the graphics card on my Mac Pro - currently using the ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with the system. I'm thinking about the HD 4870 or the GT 120. The most graphics intensive programs I use are Adobe CS4 and some video games. Most of my games are at least a couple years old and don't require anything too powerful. They all run pretty well now, but are a little choppy at times and you can really hear the graphics card working. So I think the GT 120 would probably be sufficient, but I'm interested to know what others think. I don't have a use for the Mini DisplayPort and do currently use two monitors, so I would want to add this card to my setup rather than replace the old one. Will this work with only one double-wide PCI slot? Currently, slot 3 is taken by an e-Sata card but slots 2 and 4 are available. If I use two graphics cards, do they share the GPU load or is it primarily placed on one of them?
Would having the HD 4870 be substantially better than both the HD 2600 and the GT 120? I also use windows through Boot Camp, would there be any issues with either of these setups? Thanks.

Why keep two (completely different) cards in the system when you're not using them?
GPU load is never shared, you can couple two video cards of _exactly the same brand and type_ in PC's (if the cards support it!), but that won't work in a Mac.
The most you'll get out of it, especially if you're only using one, is trouble.
The HD 4870 will be the best deal, the GT 120 is already quite slow for most of the newer games...

  • Upgrading Graphic Card in 2.3/2.7/Quad G5????

1 Just wasted 20 minutes of my life on the phone to apple online, and the apple technical mob along with pre sale about what PCI-X cards are there to buy and install for the latest G5's - answer none, they will sell! ridulous!!!
2 I have a 6600 256mb that retails to windoes users for cGBP£65 - what a joke, and cannot now upgrade!
3 I have seperately today spent a very painful 30 mins on hold to ATI canada, who , good news, have said they will be releasing 'some' PCI-X MAC compatible graphics cards in the near future, the pre-sales person not of course wanting to say in case he was quoted.
WHY, is it APPLE or anyone out there, you can spend a FORTUNE buying the top of the range toy, then upgrade your memory, (happier), then buy another hard drive (even more happy) - yet cannot upgrade my graphics card - RIDICULOUS - considering this is meant to be a GRAPHICS based, OS!!!
PLEASE someone tell me I am not alone in going mad here and that I am NOT THE ONLY ONE EVER TO WANT TO buy and upgrade a video card here...... it is a 3 minute job, speeds up the graphics no end, yet apple dop not want people to do it, why?

FYI - PCI-X (was a short written way for saying PCI express), whoever was just being difficult above, move on.
The stupid suggestion that i should buy a COMPUTER with PCIexpress EXPANSION slots, additional HARD drive EXPANSION slot, and EXTERNAL USB/FIREWIRE expansion slots ( so to speak), and EXPANSION to addin bluetooth/wireless - according to the SOME people above, what a nieve fool I was to assume, the fact that all above is upgradeable, and purchasable over the counter in any computer shop in the entire planet, that then I could , wait for it, ALSO UPGRADE the grpahics card - which, wait for it, does come out in a matter of mins, apple offers at time of purchase only upgrades, but not to anyone else. These cards are not in limited supply, its Apple not selling them - probably a million computers a month in the world get shipped with a 7800 card variety, apple just has to ask for its lousy orders to be upped!
APPLE - you seriously need to sort out this crap - selling ipod's to people is one thing, selling me a c$5000 computer (including monitors) with a cUSD$100 graphics card with no FUTURE option to upgrade - JOBS, you should be on this bloody forum, and directly apologising to me for the crap machine!
The fact that someone out there says, 'DOH! You should have upgraded that option at time of purchase,' GET A LIFE, if I WANTED a FIXED BUILD MACHINE, I would have bought a iMAC!
Yes, this is one annoyed customer.......
(p.s. nothing directly personal in above to anyone, i am just f'ed off here. I seperately went into Apple's London Regent Street store, supposedly the second busiest in the world, (full of ipod sales no doubt!!!) yesterday, and they told me, 'nope we do not have any, and nope we cannot even tell you a price even if we had any as do not sell them seperately,' - this is all turning into one big shiny aluminium lemon of a box, that is currently slower on graphics than my daughters GBP£550 athlon machine I bought from ASDA here (a part of walmart).
    depressed...........
p.s. thanks to the apple pre-sales technical guru who tried to sell me a 7600 agp card for my G5, even though i told him i have not agp slots, nice!
