Upgrade graphics card

I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2009 3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram.
1. I didn't see much of an increase in speed when I upraded my ram from 4 to 8GB, why is that?
2. I've ordered a graphics intensive game (Battlefield 3), I haven't yet recieved it but my friends tell me  I'm dead in the water with this setup. The graphics card is not going to handle the games graphics (NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB). I suspect they're on the money and I'm be crying this one out.
Here's the question : Is there anything decent I can do to my machine that will give me a fighting chance, like upgrade my graphics card to some beast on steriods? or am I just going to have to come to terms with the fact that these machines (Macs) really are beautiful and seem to last for ever making fantastic paper weights after just a couple of years.
I know what am I thinking?! 2009?!! fork out another couple K for a new soon to be old machine "-
Give me hope guys I love my Mac -

The only iMacs that you can replace and upgrade the GPU are the 2009, 2010, 2011 to present 27 inch models.
Smaller screen models have the GPU soldered to the logic board and are, definitely, not user upgradeable/replaceable.
Though, this is no easy task and not for a newbie or novice at upgrading internals of any computer.
You've maxed the RAM out in your 24 inch model, too.
I am afraid your friends are right.
If you are into heavy gaming, your iMac isn't going to cut it.
Without newer CPU, GPU and RAM, you're limited to what you can do.
I think with heavy gaming, RAM and GPU can be more of a priority.
New High end iMacs with maxed out component features will do the job well, but add to the expense with faster CPU's and GPU's. iMacs weren't designed to be the best computer for gaming anyhow unless you spend a lot cash for all of the option goodies.
You could try looking at either refurbished iMacs on the Apple site for an iMac that has better specs or try Apple Authorized resellers to see if there are used iMacs that they have for sale that will meet your specs. They will be, somewhat, cheaper than buying a brand new iMac.
If all you do is gaming, then you're right an iMac won't last you long as it it seems gaming technologies advance more quickly than any other software/hardware development.
I don't do any heavy gaming on my 2009 27 inch iMac, but expect to be able to use and still have a useful iMac for another 4-6 years, or so.
Sorry for the bad news.

    Hi:
Unfortunately in most of today's notebooks (including yours), the graphics cannot be upgraded.
I looked at the service manual for your notebook, and there aren't even any other motherboards with better graphics available.
You can try the latest drivers from AMD to see if that helps, any but you can't do anything with the hardware.

    Hi:
Graphics adapters cannot be upgraded simply.
You would need to replace the motherboard with one that would have better graphics (if one exists for your model).
This would cost as much as buying a new notebook, so it is probably not a good idea to undertake such an endeavor.

  • What upgrade graphic card do i need for a early 2008 mac pro

I have a early 2008 Mac Pro.  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB is what i have now.  What is a good upgrade graphic card to get.

The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950. The same can't be said of the GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti or Radeon R9 280X -- all of which require an auxiliary power feed to avoid a nasty power down of your tower at the worst moment when too much wattage is demanded of the Mac Pro's factory power supply.
Did I mention that the GTX 780 with 6GB of GDDR5 matches the 6GB of GDDR5 in the TITAN?
The one fallacy to my 'sweet spot' award has to do with OpenCL. In case you hadn't noticed, the AMD Radeon GPUs smoked the NVIDIA GeForce GPUs running Photoshop's OpenCL accelerated Iris Blur filter and rendering LuxMark's OpenCL accelerated Room scene.

So depends on budget, whether you want a PC card for less but no "early EFI boot screen" prior to drivers loading, and what apps and needs you have.
The one thing for sure is that 2600XT should have been retired ages ago and even more so with 10.8.3 and above, it could be trouble or just... PITA/POS.

  • Upgrading graphic card on HP DC 8300 CMT

    Dear HP,
I try to upgrade graphic card, on HP DC 8300 CMT (Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor, Intel HD Graphics 4000 )
with Nvidia Asus GeForce GTX 650 Ti.
As stock power supply doesnt meet requirements, I installed an additional  FSP Group Booster X5 450W.
Once I turn PC on, it reboots 3 times, and eventually it continues to use onboard graphic and windows 7 loads as usual .
like if new graphic card is not present. (not detected by windows)
Bios version is latest and particular option  for disableing integrated graphic is grayed out- not accessible.
Is there any explanation why this happens ?
On DC 8100 sff It automaticaly disabled onboard graphic, altough it was low consumption Radeon HD 7750 Low Profile card, and there was no any problem.

I would like to upgrade the graphic card för HP Pavilion p6-2105eo.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Try one of the below MSI specific model graphics cards.  They may or may not work in your PC but if they do then it's about the best that you can do without also replacing the power supply. These cards come with a switch to allow the card to work with legacy and UEFI mode BIOS PCs.  Know what the return policy is before your PC.

  • Do I need upgraded graphics card for photography with 24" iMac ?

I'm very close to ordering a new 24" iMac. I'm a photographer, shoot RAW & process in Adobe Lightroom beta, and can't seem to find out if I would benefit from the upgraded video / graphics card option. If this just for gaming and video or would I see some benefit from having it for my photo applications? I'm also debating on the value of ordering the higher speed processor for the iMac. I know RAM is the most important thing but not sure if I'm wasting $$$ on the graphics card and speed upgrades. Hope one of the experts here can help me make the right decision. I'm currently using a 20" G5 iMac with 1.5 gigs of RAM with decent success.

Here is my personall philosophy on purchasing computers. Buy the best you can with in your budget. If your budget allows the cpu upgrade and the video card upgrade get it. Once you order, you won't be able to upgrade again and who knows what the future holds. It will also help to future proof your computer. If you only buy once every 3 or 4 years then getting the better cpu and graphics card will help tide you over near the end. Also, your computing habits my change in the future. You might decide you like doing video and then the 9600 gt card will indeed help. I just don't like limiting my future use by my buying decisions today.

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • Satellite A100-207: Is it possible to upgrade graphic card for gaming

    Hi
I am looking to buy the Toshiba A100-207 laptop and it comes with 128MB of shared graphics.
I would like to play games and I was wondering if I could upgrade the graphics (such as a nvidia card that I could buy and put in) or are the graphics fixed?
I would just like to know if I am able to upgrade?
    Thankyou

    Hi
In my opinion the graphic card and/or the CPU is not soldered on the new notebook generation. The parts should be simply plugged on the board.
But this does not change the upgrade situation.
Possibly you will be able to remove the graphic card but Im sure you will get compatibility problems with other hardware.
The stronger graphic card produces more warmness and the temperature would increases automatically to a higher level. This would lead to the overheating issue and the notebook would either shut down or not starts.
The desktop PC technology is simply different as on the notebooks. You can also not compare the different graphic cards. Notebook manufactures uses only the graphic card chips which dont supports an own cooling module.
Simply said its not possible to upgrade the graphic card.

  • Is it possible to upgrade graphics card in my S410?

I've bought a IdeaPad S410, equipeed with i5-4210U 1.70 GHz , Intel HD Graphics (Intergrated) and Radeon R5 M230. I would like to know if it's possible to upgrade my R5 M230 to a better Graphics card, perhaps R7 M260?
Any reply is greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance..

    hi MizARe3,
Looking at the S410 hardware layout (page 59-60 of the hardware maintenance manual), the CPU and the discrete Radeon R5 M230 are both integrated to the motherboard, thus, you can't separately upgrade the discrete GPU.

  • HELP! Upgrading Graphics Card on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi all,
I'm interested in upgrading my current graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB to something with more memory.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which brand to go with that'll be compatible with my Mac Pro 2009 model and will work well under OSX Mavericks.
I really dont want to break the bank. Need a good amount of GDDR5 ram for Adobe Creative Cloud mostly. Would also like to run some gaming on PC Bootcamp drive under Windows 7 (Titanfall, Crysis, Battlefield, etc). However that's all secondary, thanks for your help.

LOTS of choices, depends if you want ones that will work without fuss (ATI 5770 & 5870 plus Mac edition EVGA 680 and Sapphire 7950) still give you boot screens if you option boot.
If you don't care about boot screens, you can use almost any recent ATI or Nvidia card. If you only boot into OSX, you can live without boot screens.
