Upgrade hard drive in MacBook

What are my options for upgrading the 320 GB SATA drive in my MacBook to a solid state model?

http://www.macsales.com/ sells them.  Note, your machine can only take the 9.5mm hard drives, and not the 12.5mm hard drives.   Ask them if a jumper is needed to go to your slower SATA bus.

  • After upgrading hard drive on MacBook Pro, Premiere will no longer open

I just upgraded the internal hard drive on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, unibody), OS 10.8.2, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 M Graphics card.
I've been running Premiere Pro CS5, and then CS6, on the machine without any problems until I upgraded the hard drive (to a new Seagate Momentus XT SSHD 750GB).
Now, when I load Premiere Pro, I get the following error message: "Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again."
I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting preferences, and what they suggest here: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error---preludevideo-play-modules.html (I installed the latest CUDA driver, and my GPU driver is up to date; I am already set up as Admin on my computer).
Another thing I did was go into Terminal and ran GPUSniffer. That was what worried me - it seemed to suggest that the card is not functioning, but I don't know if that means it's not functioning at all or not functioning in ways that Premiere can work with. Any advice? I'm tempted to open it back up and re-install the original hard drive, except that new one is making most other things noticably faster. Booting, opening and closing apps, etc.
Here's the message I got when I ran GPUSniffer:

It looks like I've solved my problem.
I decided to try again - this time cloning my original drive onto the new one instead of using Time Machine - and now everything seems to work just fine. Just faster. I can only assume that in the restoration process the first time, some necessary files got corrupted or went missing. Thanks, Bill, it was your question that made me wonder whether it might be better to create an image.

  • How to Upgrade Hard Drive in MacBook Pro?

I made the mistake of getting only the 90G HD is a MBP purchased in Feb 2008. The manual does not have info on upgrading the HD and I suspect doing so myself may void the Apple Care warranty.
Will the Apple Store do this upgrade for me and in a manner that would not void the warranty?
    Thanks,
    Marcantonio

THe MacBook Pro you are speaking of has a hard drive that is not user replaceable. Meaning, it would void the AppleCare. With that said, any Apple Certified Support Center can service your MacBook Pro without voiding the warranty, this includes retail Apple Stores.

  • Upgrade hard drive for macbook pro

I am planning on upgrading to a 300GB Hard drive on my 2.33GHz core 2 duo 15.4" macbook pro.
    Any recommendation?

If all the technical specs (like SATA, physical dimensions, power usage etc) all match then you can use any drive of any available size in your MBP. Right now it appears that the largest available is the Western Digital 250GB 5400rpm drive where as the fastest is the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive. Fujitsu and Toshiba have annonce 300GB drives though I've not heard that either are yet shipping.
I have to say that I'm very pleased with the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive.

  • Upgrade Hard Drive on Macbook

Hello I am looking into upgrading my Hard Drive on my new Macbook C2D 2.2Ghz. I was looking on macsales.com and noticed they had a 250Gb hd for around $150. Is this a reputable brand? If not what is a good brand to go with? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Good afternoon,
Which brand are they selling, you didn't mention that? Normally I recommend Seagate, Fujitsu, and occasionally Western Digital as they are the big brand names in hard drives.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Problem upgrading Hard Drive in Macbook

Just purchased a Seagate sata HD to upgrade my Macbook's 60Gb HD. Swapping the drives over was easy, problems started when i have tried to format the drive.
I have formatted it to Mac OS Extended(journaled) okay but when i have tried to write zeros to the disc it just hangs. It will let me do that to the original 60Gb HD.
Then i tried installing the OS from the install disc and that works upto a point of 14% installing components and then it hangs again! Not so with the original 60Gb HD. The HD makes some clicking noises, so i guess the Drive is faulty?
I have verified the disc and it says passed but there seems to be something wrong as it won't let me write zeros to it and it only lets me instal 14% of the OS.
As i can get everything to work with the original drive, i presume that i am doing things correctly & the instal disc is fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Simon

    Do the following:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Upgrade Hard Drive in Macbook Pro

Have a 17" Macbook Pro with a 500 GB drive. Only have 1.3 GB available. Running vmware (Windows XP service pack 2) and Leopard.
Is there a slot to add a second hard drive internally? Or can we replace with a 1 TB or larger drive?

The built-in optical drive can be replaced with a special caddy that holds a second internal hard drive:
    http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/
The Apple-specified maximum height for an internal hard drive in a MBP is 9.5mm, and the only currently available 2.5" hard drive larger than 500GB is a Western Digital 750GB drive that is 12.5mm high. WD has announced, but not released, a 12.5mm high 1TB drive.
There is one vendor who offers to install the 750GB WD drive in any unibody MBP regardless of the height limitation, without saying whether any modification of the computer or the drive is required:
    http://www.9to5mac.com/750GB-MAcBook-Hard-drive-12-5mm
    http://www.myservice.com/harddrives.html
If the drive can be installed without any modification, there's no reason you couldn't do the job yourself and save a bundle of money.

  • Looking to upgrade hard drive on MacBook Pro?

I currently have a 250GB 5400rpm drive. These are the hard drives that I am currently looking at:
An SSD such as this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-MMCRE28G5MXP-128GB-MLC-SSD-Solid-State-SATA-HD D-/290556384680?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item43a68295a8#ht_1476wt_1172
A hybrid drive such as this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seagate-Momentus-XT-Solid-State-Hybrid-Hard-Drive-500G B-/170679697695?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item27bd4d811f#ht_4482wt_918
    Or a 10000rpm drive such as this: http://www.cclonline.com/product/27041/WD3000BLFS/Hard-Drives/300GB-Western-Digi tal-VelociRaptor-2-5-Hard-Drive/HDD0822/

The VelociRaptor won´t fit because its 1,5cm height – you need a 2,5" disc with 9,5mm height (some 12,5mm would fit too). Not to mention the heat and noise a 10000rpm drive would produce ...
Can´t tell you which of the other two would the best choice, based upon your detailed description what you´re looking for ...

  • Upgrading hard drive and OS - time machine suitable?

I've been keeping regular copies of my system using time machine, but am not sure of it's overall capabilities. I am about to replace my internal hard drive (2008 macbook) and upgrade to Snow Leopard. Once this is done can I simply restore my old settings, applications, and files using time machine? Would this also include things such as my .profile file?
Also if anyone has any advice on a good replacement hard drive then that would be super. I have the late 2008 aluminium macbook, and need something bigger than the current 230GB. I'm off to do some research now, but it can't hurt to ask here too.
    Thanks for the help,
    Nick

Yes, the Momentus is a good drive.....You shouldn't have any issues with that one...
I myself purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400RPM hard drive and used it for a few months until I got a nice deal on a 128GB Kingston V200 SSD.....
Now I'm enjoying a quick Macbook Uni with 8GB of RAM and SSD upgrade.  Planning on giving it to my niece since I have a couple of late 2011 Macbook Pros.
    Good luck

What is the best upgrade hard drive for an A1342 (white macbook)?

Absolutely. I put a Samsung 840 in my early 2009 white macbook and it is the best computer upgrade I've ever done. I've also put an OWC SSD in my late 2009 iMac and highly recommend their drives. http://eshop.macsales.com

Got a new external hard drive. Transferred all files from old hard drive to new hard drive. Connected hard drive to macbook. How do I get all my files to be recognized by iTunes and my already made playlists??

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

How to replace hard drive in macbook pro?

    Hi S,
If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Then go to ifixit.com, or powerbookmedic.com or macsales.com or youtube or others and there are illustrated, detailed directions. Good luck to you and post back if you have further questions.

What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro?

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great.  Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives.  They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options.  Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives.  Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.
