Upgrade Harddrive - What brands actually work???

Hi, I'm getting a bit confused. More I read, more I am unsure what direction to go. I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Early 2006), and want to upgrade the harddrive to a larger one.
Looking at the Seagate 500Gb, then see all kinds of post about them freezing up and having lots of problems. So I think, "Well, Western Digital is good, right?" and am looking at their 320Gb Scorpio Black (without G shock). Then see post saying WD is junk ... ARRRGGGHHH!!!
Seems everyone has problem with every brand. So, which is really reliable and a good upgrade to go with?
Thanks!

Kappy, thank you for the reply. I actually did search for answers, but all that came up was others with the similar questions that were never really answered, and the complaints about the various drives. I do search before posting, but sometimes just posting a new question is much easier than sifting through all the various complaints and such.
I appreciate your reply and input. It still concerns me with the rash of problems seagate seems to have as of late, with no apparent resolution. Although as you say, out of how many they sell, the incidents are likely a small percentage.
Thanks for the tips too, I realize it's a bit involved replacing the drives and am familiar with the workings and how to do it. Just figuring what to put in it ... lol!

  • What soundcard actually works in Vista x

Is there any Creative soundcards that work at all in Vista x64 without problems?
A card that i can just install with no fuss and then it works?
I bought a Audigy SE and it is almost impossible to get to work.
I read some of the guides how ppl copy their CD's and modify files ect.
Are there no cards that actually work?
I read ppl who got X-Fi but still have problems, X-Fi is the newest?

LoL, afraid you'll have to go to **competitor** for a soundcard with all it's features enabled in Vista.
My X-fi works fine in Entertainment mode, but put it in Game mode & start any EAX game and it crashes out with looping sound.
The much vaunted CMSS 3D doesn't work in Vista 64, and dolby decoding is still missing.
Vista was only released 8 months ago after a year of public beta's, can't expect Creative to release working drivers so quickly can we!

i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

  • What is the difference between Wine, Wineskin, Winery and Wine Bottler, and how do I get Wine to *ACTUALLY* work in Mountain Lion?

Ok, so this is my first post here and I am admittedly terrible at forums. Someone might say, "This was addressed in the ___________ thread by __________! Go read it!" --- that may be so but I've spent enough hours trying to google this problem into submission to no avail based on what is apparently working for others, so I would like a chance to get specific answers to specific questions that aren't from Mar 2011, etc.
So first of all, I'm confused by all the various Wine programs/apps/whatevers. I've seen Wine, Wineskin, Winery, Wine Bottler, and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more than that. What's the difference between all of these and how do they work with one another? What do I actually need to get windows programs working?
All of my google searches have led me to people giving out fish, but no one giving out fishing lessons. I'm not a pro at mac and windows and all that, but I'm a fairly bright individual who gets VERY frustrated, very quickly, when I don't understand the why and how of something I'm attempting.
I've also found "answers" where the person attempting to help starts off helpful enough, but degrades into the most archaic of techno-babble after about 5-6 sentences. On the other hand, I've watched tutorials on youtube where the poster decides to skip (apparently crucial) sections of the tutorial, and mutters such gems as: "... you might wanna have to run Wine first before you can do anything, cuz I think it has to configure it and set up a bunch of stuff"
    O.o
A happy medium between techno-babble and the most basic of explanations would be ideal for me, and I'd imagine for others as well.
Here is a summarized history of my relationship with Wine:
Diablo II - I downloaded this awesome thing which ended up being... uh... I guess Diablo II in a Wineskin "wrapper". I'm not sure, all I know is that it's a D2 icon, and if I go to 'show package contents', it's got C drive, Program Files, et cetera inside of it. I double click it, it launches D2, and it works like a dream. <3
'Vanilla Install' - That's what I heard someone call it. It was the command/terminal style install using xquartz and xcode found at http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/. I followed every instruction to the letter, and got all the way to '$ sudo port install wine', at which point it started going smoothly, free from the possible error he described regarding the installation of xcode, and then just failed after I left the room to use the restroom and came back. Please don't ask me to repeat what the error was, because honestly, after reading more things on the interwebs, I'm confused as to why it's even necessary to go through all of that, so I'd rather not try that route again anyways, rendering the error message quite possibly irrelevant.
Wine + Wine Bottler - So I decided to try to seek out an easier method, as I know that one must exist that doesn't involve command lines. I found a video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BBkISOcEA, and oh man would it be great if that method had actually worked. Again, I followed all instructions provided to procure my free fish, and at the point in the video where he declares that "xquarts or x11 will open" - it doesn't open. Nothing opens. I was trying to install Star Sonata, btw.
So here I am, thoroughly worn out, frustrated at all the random places Wine is installed on my mac now, and just want someone to explain it all, from top down, without getting toooooooo technical on me. I know that might be asking a lot...

    ## I know that the poster has already found a solution, but the following is a possible answer for others that have similar issues.
For Winebottler, just go to their website and download it. Run the program. Choose .wine as your prefix (best choice) or whatever suits you best. You'll need a functional X11. If you can't use the one that comes with your mac, download the latest one from the website.
If your issue is one with Winebottler's Wine not running correctly due to X11, then you have a pretty ugly problem, although a simple upgrade is the best solution (Upgrade XQuartz.app).
    http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/#part-1
The above website is the easiest way to get REAL wine on your computer. First of all, Wineskin WInery, etc. are NOT WINE. They are 3rd party apps that may use Wine or may have originally part of Wine, but they are no longer up to date with Wine. WineBottler is currently up to date with the stable releases of Wine (but not the maintenence releases).
For the website tutorial and to run Wine on your mac without using a thrid party app, you will need to know a few things.
First, you will need to know basic control of the command line. That means, sudo (you must know the administrator password to your computer), and the forms of cd (change directory).
Second, you will need Xcode. Download 4.2 (stable) or whatever other versions you want, but beware: It is over 1 GB, and you will need time for it to work.
Third, you will need to get MacPorts and configure it. The tutorial should have this data.
When you download wine (use sudo port install wine-devel for the latest development release of wine), it will first download a lot of dependencies. This will take a while. After that, it will download wine itself.
After obtaining wine, to run a program, open the terminal.app window.
    cd desktop/XYZ/ZYZ\ WRQ
The above will first enter the desktop, then folder XYZ, then folder ZYZ WRQ. From here,
    wine th11e.exe
Or whatever executable you are trying to open. (Using Subterranean Animism as my example).
It should, in theory, run the program. Watch the terminal for errors. If there is an X11 problem, then it's not wine acting up. If the app crashes or has other issues, check the Wine Application Database to see if your app is compatible with wine.
If you have any further questions or other things, feel free to reply; I may or may not get back to you, but there's a good chance that someone will come in eventually. Otherwise, the Wine Wiki should have some information.

  • I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do?

I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do? I am on OS X Yosemite.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

You need to have iPhoto 11 v9.6 (which you can get from the App Store) to use iPhoto on Yosemite. If you already have iPhoto 11 then the update is free. Otherwise it's a purchase.

  • What are the chances of this thing actually working?

Hey there, over the next few sentences you'll probably be thinking I'm a hobo or something but whatever. I found an iPhone on the footpath today and it was kinda wet from inside. When I got it home and took it apart to see how much water was inside, there wasn't that much, a bit damp though. My dad dried it off with a blow dryer (Yeah I know, he isn't great with electronics) and cracked the screen right between the middle trying to open it up. I chargered it a little and I could faintly see the Apple logo. The screen went black shortly after and I couldn't do anything. Sometimes I can see something that looks like a USB plug but it was hard to tell. Any of the computers with iTunes in my house don't recognize the phone. The screen might turn into the Matrix's code (you know, all the green numbers lined up?) if you looked at it from real far and had sunglasses on.
I think it's an Iphone 3G, so what are the chances of this thing actually working? Is it completely busted, would it be worth taking it to get repaired, selling it for spare parts or just throwing the thing away?

It doesn't belong to you. Turn it in to the police.

  • HT204350 How do I know if the migration assistant is actually working? I got as far as a screen that says it is "Transferring your information" and there is what looks like a progress bar but that has moving blue diagonal lines rather than any progress

The fan on my target computer is whirring away and so it sounds like something is happening. But there doesnt seem to be any way of telling from either the traget or the source computer if the thing is actually working.  How many hours should I wait before concluding that something has gone wrong?  I have over 100GB of data so I am not expecting it to be fast!
Is it normal for the source computer to just drop out of migration asssistant at the begining, or should there be some sort of indication that it is working?  What about if I use activity monitor is there any clues I should be looking for there?

    Hello gatormommy97,
If that migration happens to still be chugging along, you're in luck. We've got step-by-step instructions for performing an Erase & Install on the new MacBook Pro. This will restore it to 'factory defaults,' just like it came out of the box for the first time, allowing you to start fresh with an alternative migration method.

  • What Video Cards ACTUALLY WORK with my G5

I have a Dual core 2.3GHz G5 with a GeForce 6600. I really want to upgrade my video card, but as usual, I can't figure out if any card will actual work. I'm really interested in the 7800 GT and GTX. Nvidia's site says that the entire 7 series of cards work in OS X, but none of the companies that actually make the cards have any mention of Mac support. I'm so frustrated because Nvidia doesn't make any cards, the companies that make them make 4 different versions of each card and don't sell them and the places that do sell them know nothing about them. So can someone PLEASE, post links to the actual cards that work in my machine. thank you.

Nvidia doesn't make the Video Cards.
They make the chips (GPU) that run on the Video Card itself. Most of the Nvidia chipsets are supported by Mac OS X.
The problem is that all Video Cards carry a firmware PROM chip that contains the early-boot code for the card as well as the card's internal operating parameters.
There is a PC version of the firmware, commonly called the VGA BIOS, and there is a Mac version of the firmware, which is designed for OpenFirmware.
The two are completly seperate from each other. A PC card will not operate in a Macintosh, nor will a Macintosh card operate in a PC.
That's your problem- is that the Nvidia chipsets support Mac OS X, but the firmware on the card (which, is up to the manufacture which one they include) may or may not support the Macintosh platform.
Saying that, the only two cards available for the G5 is the 7800 GT and the Quadro 4500. Both cards contain the Apple firmware required for the card to work in a G5.
There are no other manufactures who offer Mac G5 compatible solutions, probably due to Apple's unwillingness to release the said Mac firmware for third party video cards. Thus, it's really one or the other, and Welovemacs.com seems to be the only retailer offering ether of the cards for seperate purchase.

Does Skype work in through SL's iChat program ( IE: does iChat need to be running for Skype to succesfully use video picture & sound?) using iChat?

    Hi hassiman,
I don't have a complete list of webcams, but I recently purchased "IceCam2 USB 2.0 Video web Camera with Microphone (ICECAM2)" at MacMall.com, and it works great in iChat.
I don't use Skype, but I believe that it is independent of iChat. In other words, you can run Skype without running iChat. In fact, only one can grab the camera at a time.

What signal is it picking up? Are you joining wireless network? If so don't.. it is really poor way to run things.
Is it connected to a cable modem? Full router or just a modem type?
    Try a reset?
Plug in via ethernet.. turn off everything.. wait 5min then restart cable modem.. if that doesn't work, give it a longer off cycle.. 15min or overnight.

  • Digital drawing tablets, do they work well with Illustrator, if so what brand is best?

I'm wanting to get a drawing tablet and would like to know if and what brand Adobe supports. I'm a graphic designer and need to break free from the mouse!! ANYONE?

I use the Wacom Intuos 2 12x12; very, very nice in Illustrator.  A friend recommended the Wacom way back when I went digital in '95, and WOW!; I've never looked back.  I even use it in Word.  The best part is, the tablet allows you much more freedom and flexibility in your work station.  The mouse is limited by the cord and, a wireless is more flexible, but you still have to deal with the surface's texture or lack of and the mere fact of physically handling a line sequence by clicking and moving a mouse instead of using something so intuitive as a pen.
Don't hesitate, get the tablet.  It'll boost your productivity as well.  Plus, you will avoid costly medical procedures like carpal tunnel syndrome.
