Upgrade headaches

I've just upgraded from Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9 to Adobe Elements 10 Organizer and its associated editor.  How do I transfer the hundreds of folders into which I've already organized my photos to the new 10 Organizer so that I can view and manipulate them with the new software? I can't believe that I would have to manually go through and recreate all the folders; the software couldn't possibly be that stupid, so it must be me.  Help!

Watched folders isn't available on the mac version, and won't really do what you want, anyway. When you import your photos (File>Get Photos>From Files and Folders) the folder structure is left intact. The organizer is just a database of your images--it doesn't make duplicates unless you import from iphoto. They're still in their original folders, but the point of organizer is (as with iphoto, lightroom, aperture, etc.) to get away from thinking in terms of folders so much and to use keywords and categories and stop worrying about where your photos are stored.
However, it's not mandatory to use organizer, either. Import some photos and create a test catalog to see what you think.
I also like folders so I don't use organizer much.

  • Upgrade headache

Trying to make a long story short....  Working on a laptop that's been out of commission for a while.  Have to get it working since I have to be on the road for a
family emergency. Acrobat 6.06 standard is installed. Need to install cs3 web premium on it.  Install says it will upgrade Acrobat, but the installation keeps failing.  The machine is XP SP3.  Any ideas???

Thanks for the reply, Bill.  Yeah, I had turned off the virus protection prior to installing.  Actually, the culprit turned out to be the firewall.  Strange that everything else installed ok except that program.  Thanks for getting my brain jump-started.  What can I say, it's been a rough few days here.
    Hat's off to you!
    Thanks!

  • 770-c45 + Phenom II 955 upgrade headache

I purchased a Phenom II X4 955 CPU to replace my Athlon II X2 245 CPU. I have an MSI 770-C45 motherboard.
So, I opened up my PC and got to work. I changed the CPU, but when I tried to turn it on it wouldn't even post. All the fans spun but nothing else happened.
I concluded that it must be because the BIOS was a little old so I put the old CPU back in and it booted fine. I then updated the BIOS to the most recent version. Everything was working flawlessly.
So then I swapped the CPU's again. Unfortunately the problem seems to persist. My PC simply will not post with the 955 but does so without a problem with the athlon.
I really do not know what to think. Is there anything that I could be missing? I did double check my power connections and my PSU is definitely good enough (500W Antec).

  • Upgrading to latest Fx version

When it comes to installing new versions of software whose current version I can continue to use without problems, I am what might be called a "last adapter." Perhaps because I've been "hurt" by buggy new versions in the past, perhaps because I'm getting old and lazy about learning new interfaces and features--whatever the reason, I'm slow to upgrade unless I'm faced with some obvious danger. So I've stuck with Firefox 3.6.x after version 4 came out, thinking I would wait until something like a version 4.2 arrived. While waiting, much to my surprise version 5 showed up!
Finally, today, after backing up my entire hard drive and updating my system software and my plug-ins, I was ready to take the plunge. For some reason, however, although I had spent the past several weeks turning down many repeated automatic invitations from Firefox to update to version 4 (but eventually accepting only security updates for versions up to 3.6.19), now, when I clicked "Check for Updates," I was told that none were available.
It occurs to me that some fuction may have been changed on the Firefox servers after one or more security upgrades had been made available for holdouts like me: maybe the "Check for Updates" function was limited to 3.6.x versions? The message I got today would make sense, then, since I have the latest version (3.6.19) installed. But this is only a guess.
At any rate, I decided to directly download version 5, which was not difficult to find. Opening the file, however, when I dragged the installer's Firefox app icon to the aliased icon of my app folder, I got this unexpected message: "A newer item named 'Firefox.app' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you're moving?"
Of course I immediately double-checked both the new version (newly downloaded file "Firefox 5.0.1.dmg") and the old installed version (clearly 3.6.19).
I should probably just ignore this warning message and click on "Replace," but by now I've got an "upgrade headache." It's a small pain compared to some others I've had in past years with different software, but it's a pain nonetheless.
What in the world is going on?
Basics about my system (in case it's relevant):
Mac Snow Leopard (totally up-to-date, including plug-ins)
All cookies (including Flash), caches, browsing history completely deleted immediately before today's update attempt.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
Try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 255 to a setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Note that the user Library folder is hidden by default on Lion. You can get to it by holding down the Option key in the Finder's Go menu, use the Go To Folder command and paste in the full path, or use Terminal to make your ~/Library folder permanently visible.

  • In November 2014 iOS X Yosemite had poor reviews. Have problems or idiosyncrasies been corrected?

I have been reluctant to upload the OS upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite until I read good reviews. One user talked about a card upgrade. Where can I learn more and what's happening now in March 2015?

If I believed all the negative comments on this website I'd still be using my Macintosh SE/30 from 1989. I am not familiar with any required "card upgrade".
Nearly all operating system upgrade headaches are the result of incompatible or poorly implemented third party software. Complaints regarding incompatible software or ill-conceived system modifications have arisen with every OS X version ever released. They exist in roughly the same proportion with Yosemite, and they will continue to exist with every OS X release there will ever be. Apple can't fix bugs in third party software they did not create and do not control. If you contemplate upgrading, be sure to uninstall garbage "anti-virus" and third party "cleaning" or "optimizing" apps that should not be installed on any Mac, and research your essential software for compatibility. "Essential software" specifically excludes all the aforementioned garbage, regardless of their respective developers' claims of Yosemite compatibility.
All my Macs are running Yosemite just fine, and there's no way I would ever contemplate reverting to any earlier OS version.
Assuming that you are already in the habit of routinely backing up your system you can install Yosemite at no risk and at no cost. If you do not routinely back up your system, you should. Obtain an external USB or FireWire hard disk drive for your Mac, then download and install Yosemite on it. You can choose to start your Mac from that disk or the internal one using Startup Manager (hold an option key while you start your Mac), and evaluate Yosemite at no risk whatsoever to your existing installation. Just be sure to designate the proper installation location for Yosemite when you get to that installation step.
Running OS X from an external USB hard disk won't be as fast as the iMac's internal one, but it will be sufficient to draw conclusions regarding its suitability for your needs. All else being equal Yosemite should perform somewhat better than Mavericks due to various efficiency improvements.
An external hard disk drive of adequate capacity can be purchased for well under $100 - much less than the cost of some previous OS X upgrades themselves. When you satisfy yourself that Yosemite works for you, then "clone" the external disk's contents to your internal one, or just install Yosemite directly, and use the external disk for backup purposes - which you ought to be doing anyway.

  • Various Preferences not "sticking"

Having been a long time Mac user since the 80's starting with an SE, I have to say that I've never had so many problems with various preferences not saving after a major upgrade. It began with 10.4 with the annoying Finder views not saving my meticulous sizing and placement of my icons in a given window. I had to do a "clean" install to regain that ability after upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5.
Now with 10.6, after upgrading, there are NUMEROUS preferences not holding as well as annoying bugs: 1) Finder window sizing and icon placement; 2) sound output to direct to Digital Out; 2) Startup Disk starting up with all drive's highlighted; 3) Start Disk not showing any Boot Camp/Windows partitions/drives.
Those are the major ones off the top of my head.
The only way to resolve this was to yet another completely "clean" install on a brand new drive and manually install all my applications and copy my preferences.
This is absolutely HORRIBLE having to constantly do clean installs. I used to kid my Winblows using friends whenever they had to upgrade or resinstall their OS from scratch. But now in the past several major revisions of OS X, I, too, have had to spend DAYS with a clean install.
I have better things to do with my life than spend a whole weekend and more, on top of having to buy another hard drive in order to do a clean install and copy over all the old settings from the old hard drive.
Is everyone else beginning to experience these same OS X upgrade headaches?
Am I simply to toss my entire preferences (and perhaps Application Support) folder to see if this solves various issues?
Like I said, I have better things to do with my life than wasting it troubleshooting annoying OS X bugs.

The first upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5 was on a G5 Dually 2.5. The Finder views not saving was only resolved by clean install. Perhaps it was a dysfunctional machine in some unforeseen way, but it worked just fine until the upgrade.
The next upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 was on a brand new 2008 Mac Pro 8-core 2.8. I say brand new because I just a fresh install of 10.5 and all applications when this computer replaced the dead G5 and then I deployed for a year and with a machine I used for maybe a total of 2 light duty hours over an entire year, did an in-stride upgrade to 10.6 and immediately had these issues, well, how dysfunctional can a machine get with practically no usage and now third party utilities (previously known as system extensions in the pre-X word)?
I upgraded my MBP in-stride to 10.6 and luckily nothing bad to report so far.
Regarding your unspoken suggestions, I already took the most painful of resolutions by starting on a brand new drive and installing the OS and every single application cleanly one by one. So there is no alternative suggestion that you could have had that would have evoked as much fury as the frustration experiencing with individually installing years of collected software, and setting my work spaces the way I had it before. A whole weekend shot.
I tried deleting .DS_Store files using the Terminal, manually resizing the target window in question to my liking, then after closing and reopening, staring back at all my changes lost and a "default" view thrust upon me. No matter of setting permissions and correctly with Disk Utility worked. I've trashed various Finder and OS related plist files to no end.
And to anyone who tells me I have no right to vent, well then you sure don't know much about the good ol' bad days at the dawn of the "web" where flame wars were rampant for those who did not know how to tread the cyber highway.
Every consumer product should have some sort of Quality Assurance check to ensure that certain aspects are as trouble- and bug-free as possible. The user interface is definitely one of those areas I would put a high priority in thorough testing, especially management of custom settings and preferences.
Should I parse my text with the now passe </rant on/ off> explicit commands to help those skip passages that add nothing but blather and spittle to the discussion?
Are have we turned into a bunch of overly sensitive, stuck-up arrogant yahoo's that Windblows flame-baits portray us as?

  • Just ordered MBP!

Hi guys! I just ordered my MBP last night! Yay!
It's the 2.2GHz i7 with the 1GB AMD graphics card. I got Hi-res and 128GB ssd for speed in mind!
According to Apple's pre-sales team the MBP I ordered will be able to run Snow Leopard, if it doesn't, I am going to be in for some headaches or get really lucky and have all of my apps work or be crowned king bug finder for Apple ;-)
Apple pre-sales also said the MBP's are shipping with Lion so hopefully I won't run into the upgrade headaches people are having... I just hope I have some sort of disk/flash media in the box to start fresh from.
I don't run any PPC apps, I use a wide variety of stuff (filemaker 11, CS5, VNC, Wireshark, ARD, Firefox, MacUpdate, 1pass, Teamviewer, evernote, etc.) they work great in SL, just not all of them may run as well on Lion. (checked via roaringapps.com) Will build full list later
What have been your biggest complaints/pet peeves in Lion?

Hang out in the Lion forums and find out:

  • Forwarding email and must keep a copy..

I handle a lot of corporate email with user that have blackberry's, etc., and am required to forward and retain copies in there in box. My other servers have third party solutions, but I'm trying to get away from that because of the upgrade headaches every time a new OS X version is released.
Is there any way possible to set a virtual user to forward an email and retain a copy in his/her inbox? I've searched high and low, and what is just a click on other mail server software, doesn't seem to be available on mail for Snow Leopard. Any mod that can be made?

Your close... Basically, if an email comes in for [email protected], which is a virtual host, I want it to go to that users inbox, as well as forwarded on to another account(ie: a blackberry account for their push notification). Now multiply that times about 200 users all forwarding to different accounts, as well as keeping a copy in their inbox for their retrieval when they get back to their office. They still control everything related to the email in their accounts, they just require forwarding to their other accounts as well for some other purpose(mobility etc.)
Currently, the workgroup manager only allows a forward, and that's it. The docs mention Sieve, but state that it does not work for the virtual host aliases. Having two accounts with different names so it forwards to account 2, and to wherever else is just stupid, and unworkable in the corporate world. That would require two email addresses for everyone of these users.
So do postfix aliases handle this specifically? ... and if so where would I find this procedure?.. also, when the server is upgraded, will this will probably be overwritten, and continually be a problem in the future?
This is a fairly standard procedure on any other mail server.

@tjk Thanks! My mother-in-law (also named Barbara, ironically) started having this issue this morning, so I've been looking into this. It seems to be a fairly widespread problem which makes me think that Lion (10.7.x) has exacerbated some issue with the card that may have already been in place. from everything I've seen, its a display-only issue (no data corruption, unless you force reboot). Still very frustrating for folks though.
Actually, thank you! I'd probably still be beating my head against the wall. That did ring a bell with another link I had stored: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbo ok-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars

    Ideas/Suggestions/  New Bug Report??

If anyone's wondering quite a few mid-2010 MacBook Pros are affected, here's the article explaining it:
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbook-pr o-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches/
"Users of last year's MacBook Pro models with NVIDIA GPUs are finding the upgrade to Lion to be far less than perfect. Problems in the NVIDIA graphics drivers that shipped with OS X 10.7 appear to be at the root of kernel panics and system freezes that leave an affected MacBook Pro with a blank black screen. Though Apple wouldn't confirm the issue directly to Ars, support engineers appear to be actively investigating the issue. For now, rolling back to Snow Leopard appears to be the best option."

  • CS3 Upgrade & Camera Raw 4.5 = MAJOR HEADACHE!

I bought a D300. Then found out that the only way to use Photoshop with it was to upgrade the Camera Raw plug-in to 4.5, which could ONLY be used with CS3. So NOW I have THOUSANDS of dollars in camera gear and software that has caused me more headaches than putting 4 kids through high school.
P4, 4 GB RAM a gazzilion bytes of hard drive space and I'm getting the dreaded blue screen of death after going through 3 or 4 photos in CS3's Bridge.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or something like that. I've emailed support and nothing. Very disappointing to say the least.
I've got it down to faulting after going through about 10 pics now but NOW, on SOME of the Nikon (.NEF) files, it's telling me that "Photoshop CS2 cannot be found!"
I'm sorry, but I'm very close to dousing this thing with lighter fluid and sending the ashes back to Adobe. I have over 1000 photos to process from the weekend it's it's IMPOSSIBLE to do it with these errors.
YES, I did the Camera Raw update per the instructions.

Elginet - your error message points to RAM problems. Perhaps your PS uses more RAM than other software and therefore the error only shows up when using PS. You could try to remove part of the memory just to locate the problem if it is within one or two memory banks. With 2 GByte the computer should run PS even though a bit slow. Once you located the problem you could either replace the defective memory or replace the whole set depending on your configuration.
It is not necessarily a hardware fault it could be a setting for memory access in the BIOS.
Basically CS3 and ACR4.5 work fine on many computers and it is very stable on my machine under Win XP-pro. Be certain it is not a general problem.
Best of luck that you can resolve your problem.
    Cheers
    Walter

  • Headaches after upgrading to 10.5.6

Recently upgraded from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6. Sorry I did it.
    1) Time machine worked once then that was it. Spoke with the admin
in the Mac environment at work and with his help things got better.
Still having an issue with time machine, if I kick off a backup manually
it works, if I let it do it on its own, it fails with a message that
    the drive is read only.
    2) The system is set to go to sleep after 30 minutes which it sometime
    does and sometimes doesn't do.
    3) Couple times through safari, when I needed to print, the print button
did not respond till I killed it and restarted.
    4) Primary application is CS3, now noticing (not sure 10.5.6 is the cause)that running Bridge-->imageprocessor--> to jpg, tiff or psd, the color fades using the
same adobe color space. Changing it to output in sRGB does not. If I save from photoshop this does not happen.
    5) Printing photos that once came out great now have a greenish/gray cast to them.
While items 4 and 5 may not be related to the 10.5.6 upgrade, the headaches are mounting. I'm wondering if I should bring it to the apple store for a complete reinstall....

Yes this was a vent of frustration....

  • After headache of upgrade to 3.1 vault is now stalled.

I upgraded to 3.1 and went through that whole headache of having to rebuild the library etc.. Eventually got everything sorted out. I worked in Aperture this morning and then updated vault. First time updating vault since upgrade to 3.1 and now the update vault seems stalled out at about 75% (stuck at 75% for about 3 hours). I do have a very large library, about 1.3 TB.
Have others found that updating vaults to be painfully slow after the 3.1 upgrade or is something frozen and should I find a fix?

    update.
The vault took over 18 hours to update killing a day of editing for me. Wish I had known and would have put it off till the evening.
3.1 crashed on me twice today for no reason...had no other aps running. Also, a few images from time to time making adjustments won't show on the images, I'll slide the temp and nothing happens or contrast, all the adjustments, nothing happens. I click on another image and adjust and works fine.
For those that have said 3.0 is nothing but a disaster I agree 100%. pure crap.

  • I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.
