Upgrade iBook G4 for 11 year old's use?

I am trying to determine whether it would be worth upgrading my old iBook G4 for my, very soon to be 11 year old son (5th grade). Would appreciate comments and suggestions. The iBook needs a new battery ($40.00). It has 256 MB RAM (upgrading to 512 MB - $17.00, upgrading to 1GB - $30.00). Currently running OS 10.3.9. Could upgrade to 10.4 alternatively, to 10.4 then on to 10.5. My son's interests are mainly sports (fantasy football - which I know little about), otherwise it would be used mainly for school work and some games (which again, I know little about, but they do not appear overly sophisticated, yet). Welcome comments on browsers for these OS's (I have used Firefox for years), and other software (iWork?). Thank you.

To a point, it doesn't matter which OS you choose to install on this iBook. If it will be OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or OS X 10.5 (leopard) They both come with very similiar problems. They are out of date and don't cope all that well against modern computing. Indeed Mac OS X 10.5 leopard does handle a little better and from my personally experiences doesn't have many restrictions other than out of date Flash player and Java versions. It has some issues rendering web pages for some social web sites, like Facebook and Youtube is very glitchy on playing videos.
Don't let this deter you though. If your son is simply doing word processing, a bit of web browsing and maybe play 'Old' versions of games. Then this iBook could suite him well.
I currently use a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.5 and have adapted this laptop well for my own personal needs. It does everything I need it to do.
You will suffer from old versions of software, software this is no longer supported and very much out of date.
I doubt very much if new versions of football games are going to work at all well with this iBook.
I wouldn't install Mac OS X 10.4 and then 10.5. Just obtain a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.5 and do a fresh install. It's not going to be cheap to upgrade,as the DVD of Mac OS X 10.5 can be expensive.
With everything else you require to increase it's specifications could be an expensive option for an out of date unsupported computer.
If you wish to processed with upgrading this iBook, my strong suggestion is, buy secondhand parts where possible. There are some cheap good used parts on eBay that will save you lots of $$$

Advice on upgrades to a 5 year old system

I mostly use my PC for editing in Premiere Pro CS3 although I do play the odd game. Unfortunately performance isn't great in Premiere or games (possibly due to the Quadro graphics card).
I'm considering either upgrading the CPU from an Athlon X2 6000+, or buying a new motherboard and a few other innards. I was was wondering if you would mind giving me some feedback as to whether this would improve performance significantly and if it's worth it?
I'm based in the UK and I've jotted down some prices against the kit I'm considering, however don't let it put you off offering advice about the tech if you're in a different region :-)
Current spec
Mobo: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
Processor: Athlon X2 6000+
RAM: Corsair 6GB DDR2 Memory
Video: Quadro FX 4600
HDD: S-ATA 72000rpm 250GB (if I've remembered right)
OS: Windows 7x64
Option 1: Upgrade with the existing motherboard
Keep the above spec but upgrade the CPU to an AMD Phenom II X4 945 (£65). I wouldn't want to do more as the motherboard is old so I'd have to be equally old kit. I'd also probably not get an SSD as the motherboard only supports S-ATA 3Gb/s and I gather the latest kit is much improved.
Option 2: Upgrade with a different motherboard:
Mobo: M5A78L-M/USB3 (£65) or M5A97 (£30)
Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-Series FX-8120 Black Edition (£118)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1066 (£55) or 8gb (£40)
HDD: Possibly intall an SSD
Windows 8: x64 (£25)
- And then sell the existing motherboard, CPU and RAM.However this will probably be too expensive for me at the moment.
Mobo
I know the more expensive motherboard would be better but would I really see a difference if I opted for the cheaper one? I'm trying to stick with Asus if possible as I've been really impressed with this model - it's lasted for years and I still have a few upgrade paths available. Most stable mobo I've ever bought.
Memory
I'm taking into consideration Premiere CS3 is 32 and so would only see 3GB. Originally I was going to try and use my existing DDR2 till I realised it wouldn't be supported.
Graphics
I could either keep the existing Quadro FX 4600, or I could replace it with a mid-range GeForce GTX 650 1024MB GDDR5 (£80). With the improvements in technology, is the Quadro still a good card to have or would a GeForce be any better (and also open up the possibiity of some light gaming?)
I originally purchased the Quadro for animation in Maya along with editing in Premiere and Photoshop, but I've not had the opportunity to do that so whilst I'd like to keep the option open, it's not essential. Any thoughts?
Hard drive
Windows 7 currently tells me that the hard drive is the slowest component in the system but I'm holding off getting an SSD as I've concerns I'd run out of space on the one I could afford if I bought it as a primary drive.
Or I may end up leaving it alone if it doesn't look like it's worth upgrading the existing system and I can't afford to build a new one. What do you think?

What does that statement mean... what are your problems?
Also be aware that an AMD does not have some of the hardware commands that an Intel CPU has, so video editing is NEVER going to be very fast with an AMD... which means you need a completely new system with a different kind of motherboard
Plus, it is not until CS5 that PPro makes use of the power of selected nVidia cards, so your current card has very little to do with video editing besides "simple" display to your monitor

Try dropping the document onto the icon for AW 6.2.9; or use the Open item in AW 6.2.9's File menu.
Provided the document is in AW 5.x or later format, it should b openable in AW 6.
If the document is in AW 6.x format, it should also be able to be opened by Pages.

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. Not knowing how to get rid of this site I deleted the entire section. Looking at your browser doesn't do anything to address this problem and I WILL NOT use a web browser that does not have some type of security for sites that I DON'T WANT MY 8 YR OLD GDAUGHTER LOOKING AT! IR - Prompting for Year Dimension and using CurrMth Substition Variable

How do I set IR so it prompts up for choosing year dimension (essbase)? I've put year in Column Query and set it as a variable. However, when I put this on workspace it doesn't prompt the user for selection. How do I resolve this?

Hard drive replacement for XH365(old)

I am having trouble trying to find a replacement/upgrade hard drive for this old notebook. It is an XH365, F2349M.
The current hard drive is an IBM Trave;star, model number DJSA-220 (20GB), ATA/IDE.
I am wanting something a little more than 20. Maybe 30 or 40GB, but that's about it.
HP's Part Surfer says they longer carry those items, but it did list a 30GB Toshiba Hard Drive (4200rpm, 9.5mm thick, 2.5in. form factor). However, I'm still having a problem finding the correct one online.
I'm new to all of this, so maybe I'm just being a little paranoid about making sure I have the right one. I have come across a couple of refurbished ones, but am unsure about buying refurbished hard drives.
I am looking for any suggestions to help me with this project. Thanks!

In a case like yours, eBay is normally the place I go to buy used (not refurbished) but guaranteed working parts. Basically something else was wrong with the notebooks and they stripped them for parts.
For example, here is a listing for 2 of the 30 GB versions of the DJSA-220:

Editing Photos of 300 Year Old Historical Docs

I'm trying to edit photos of 300 Year Old Documents using Photoshop Elements 10 and would like guidance on where I may find hints and/or supporting ideas on best ways to accomplish without reinventing the wheel spending hours of trial and error if it exists (and I'm sure it does, I just don't know where to look). Any thoughts from the experts?

The goal at this point is only to take the photo made by the archivist and improve the image to allow transcription of the text (which is in French) so that it can be further transcribed into English. The documents were in remarkably good condition despite poor storage prior to their photographing. I basically need only to crop, remove the yellowing and improve the contrasting to allow for transcription. There will be no artistic transformation for publication/presentation... unless the documents tell a good story. I can do the basics in PS but was hoping that someone could offer some hints to improve my process. I'm attaching a few pages in my gallery as an example... The unedited versions are all similar so hopefully I can set up a standard to edit all as a starting point. I know an additional question for later. http://ladnercl/photoshop.com
