  • I have an iBook G4 with 10.4.11 OS.  Can I upgrade to 10.5?

I have an iBook G4 with 10.4.11 OS.  Can I upgrade this to 10.5?

Maybe, if it meets the requirements below.
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950
Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)
MB022Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/leopard_install-setup.pdf
After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

  • Upgrade iBook G4/1.33GHZ/ Hard Drive

I've been reading through multiple posts and am a bit intimidated by the problems related to HD upgrade so maybe this question could help summarize all the answers from other posts.
I have an iBook G4 with FUJITSU MHV2040AT OEM drive. I run 10.4.11 with 1GB RAM. I will likely pay to have a new drive installed because although I would like to do it myself, I simply can't make the time right now. So here are my questions:
    1) How critical is it to have the exact system CDs that came with this specific iBook? Our family has multiple iBook/MacBooks, etc. and these disks are now scattered. Is the only way to figure out which of two sets of CDs (or DVDs) came with the computer to call Apple Support? [1 iBook G4 was purchased late 04, the other actually in July 05]
    2) I understand this iBook requires what is known as an EIDE, a.k.a. IDE, a.k.a. ATA, a.k.a. PATA type drive. Is this correct? Are they all the same?
    3) Drives of this type seem to be available as large as 325GB from Western Digital for little more $ than a 160GB or 250GB. Is there a capacity limit I should consider in terms of useable formatting? I know they all have the same statistical probability of failure so why not buy the highest affordable capacity?
    4) I see no mention of physical size in the posts. Is this a consideration or do all PATA drives have the same physical dimensions and will fit in the iBook case?
    5) I also want to upgrade to newer OS. I understand 10.5.xxx will run on this iBook but I want to make sure I am aware of any limitations.
    6) Lastly, is there a smooth way to transfer everything to the new drive. By this I mean applications, preferences, documents, iTune play lists, etc., etc.? So often I find backups are great for files but nothing else. Is a "Disc Image" what I should be researching for this?
Thank you for any help you can provide. I admit, many of these individual questions may be answered in previous strings I have not yet read, but I haven't found any that really deal with these in one place. Perhaps this may help others thinking of doing the same?

Hey MacTrue and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    1) How critical is it to have the exact system CDs that came with this specific iBook?
Not too critical since you'll want 10.4.11 on them anyway. So that's the installer you'd need 10.4.2.
    2) I understand this iBook requires what is known as an EIDE, a.k.a. IDE, a.k.a. ATA, a.k.a. PATA type drive. Is this correct? Are they all the same?
Yes sort of. Actually they are referred to as 2.5 PATA to distinguish them from the 3.5 which are for desktops. What you don't want is a SATA which is totally different.
    3) Drives of this type seem to be available as large as 325GB from Western Digital for little more $ than a 160GB or 250GB. Is there a capacity limit I should consider in terms of useable formatting?
    No.
I know they all have the same statistical probability of failure so why not buy the highest affordable capacity?
Right. Here's the ones that OWC has for the 2004 model:
    http://tinyurl.com/ckdr2s
You should call them and talk to their knowledgeable sales people. That way if there's a problem you will have someone to go back to.
    4) I see no mention of physical size in the posts. Is this a consideration or do all PATA drives have the same physical dimensions and will fit in the iBook case?
No and that's why it's important to deal with a place that will stand behind what they recommend. If you did have a problem with size it would be in a much older drive that was higher than the newer ones.
    5) I also want to upgrade to newer OS. I understand 10.5.xxx will run on this iBook but I want to make sure I am aware of any limitations.
The requirements for Leopard are 887 MHz G4 and above so you're fine. The larger amount of RAM is good also.
    6) Lastly, is there a smooth way to transfer everything to the new drive. By this I mean applications, preferences, documents, iTune play lists, etc., etc.? So often I find backups are great for files but nothing else. Is a "Disc Image" what I should be researching for this?
If I were doing this I'd clone your entire hard drive over to an external FireWire hard drive using an appt like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. That way when your new drive is in you can just boot from your clone and CCC or SuperDuper it back onto your new drive after you format it.
You also say "iBookG4 and multiple others" so if one of the multiple others was a Mac w/ a firewire port another way would be to use target mode.

  • How to update my ibook G4 with out itunes

how to update my ibook G4 with out itunes

Your question begs more questions before an answer...
What are you trying to upgrade, and why would you try to use iTunes
in a vintage G4 computer that cannot run an OS X later than 10.5.8
at best? (and only if it has a processor at least 867MHz or better)
With at least a 1.0GHz iBook G4 you could run Leopard 10.5.8, and
the system requires a retail DVD to install the 10.5, then go online
after installation, to get the Combo 10.5.8 update, by use of Software
Update within that first earlier system...
If the computer does not have at least the minimum processor, it would
not be able to see Leopard as a system, so Tiger 10.4.11 is the last...
    http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/
iTunes does not upgrade or update much of anything in an obsolete &/
or vintage Mac OS X before the Intel-Mac era, and prior to OS X 10.6.8.
If your computer does not have an iTunes version at all, you can go to
Apple support downloads and look at older iTunes, and older safari,
and some other bits that are limited to their respective vintage OS X.
Usually the upgrade path utilizes DVD media or CD media, for software
& depending on what kind of software, then later get update-downloads.
To see if there may be anything not already installed in the system or
applications that could exist in the Apple support download servers,
you could see if the System's own Software Update, located in Apple
Menu in upper left side of the menu bar in Finder, can locate some.
If you perform a new install and did not save all the bits as downloaded
from when they were more current, some updates to original media that
formerly were online and available as download (step updates, not full
upgrades) you may eventually be unable to upgrade then update an older
OS X system; the remainder of the later or last fixes were in the update.
So, if you have an old G4 PowerPC Mac computer running, say Tiger 10.4.3
and thought to use some software intended to run in Tiger 10.4.11, then
you'd have to see if Software Update could find the 10.4.11 Combo update.
After updating the main system, other applications may also see a need to
be updated, if they were not already as far as they could go, in their vintage.
iPhoto, and other applications, such as they were, had updates to their main
application. So with iTunes, the last version that can work in a PPC G4/G5
non-intel would be in the last supported OS X, Leopard 10.5.8, and that
version number is iTunes 10.6.3; so you can't visit an App Store or Mac App
Store nor can you run Snow Leopard on a PowerPC architecture Mac.
With the intel-based Mac, and Snow Leopard, you can access the online
Stores to include recent Mac Apps, App Store, iTunes Store, etc. A light
version of early iTunes (see iTunes Player) can be seen, and their Radio
still plays free music channels. I have several older pre-Intel Macs...
The matter involves the vintage of the device, the system, and limits of the
old vintage/obsoleted configurations where both are interdependent.
Not sure if this helps, but more of a history lesson may be read if you look
into everymac.com and compare models, build years, and other specs...
If you need some feature or function not supported by vintage hardware or
vintage software, or a newer web browser, you have to look further. A fair
browser can be found in TenFourFox. I use it daily in a PPC G4 MINI 1.5GHz.
with Leopard 10.5.8. Plus others. To go further, look into an Intel-based Mac
such as MacBook2.1 & then buy the Snow Leopard retail DVD for about $20.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Will my Facebook albums remain?

I just upgraded my computer to yosemite and that includes the iPhoto application.
After opening iPhoto it says "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." I'm worried that if I chose to upgrade I will 1. lose all my photos and 2. have my synced facebok albums taken off Facebook.
One time I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and lost all my Facebook album photos so I don't want to make the same mistake.
So does anyone know if I chose to go through with this upgrade will I lose my photos in the iPhoto and the synced albums on Facebook? If I do lose photos, how do I go recover my previous iPhoto version?

Just to confirm. When I saved a copy of my iPhoto library on my external harddrive that's "backing-up" right?
Also, is there anyway on Facebook to tell which albums are synced with my iPhoto so that I know which ones will be gone if something does go wrong?
Sorry one more question Larry. I keep reading issues people are having with upgrading their iPhoto to 9.6 and the upgraded iPhoto does not recognize their library (see: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6676471). If this happens to me and I have to repair or re-install my iPhoto will my Facebook albums be affected?
Thanks for your help Larry I appreciate it

    Thanks Niel.
Bear with me, as I'm not particularly computer literate.
I found the computer listed (Powerbook 6,7, 12 inch screen) and the following note:
"Details: *This model is capable of using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X "Classic" environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). It cannot boot into Mac OS 9."
Does this mean if I purchase OSX 10.4.11,  I can install it and then use software that works in the "Classic" environment?
    Again thanks for your help.

  • Upgrade ibook g4

Hello I was wondering if any one knew a web site I could look at for logic boards. because I have an ibook g4 with a 800mhz processor which works great! But I have recently looked into software programs for mac and there is this one program called guitar rig 2 that requires at least a 1ghz processor in order to run on a mac. so was thinking of upgrading the logic board to a 2ghz but a 1ghz would satisfy me just as well. I know I should just buy a new one that has the processor speed I am looking for but i have grown attachd to my ibook and can't let it go!!!!
Any suggestions and information would help thanks.

As far as I know the fastest mobile G4 ever in an ibook is the 1.42ghz chip that was in the last generation. The PBs had 1.5 and 1.67ghz processors, but to be honest I don't think swapping out logic boards is worth it. You can get a refurb macbook for under $1000 and aside from being much faster it will be under warranty.
Look at ebay/craigslist/etc. to see what your machine is worth and reconsider your options.

    1.      Log onto Outlook Web Access
    2.      Top right hand part of the screen select "Options"
    3.     Select "See All Options"
    4.      Select "Phone" menu
Check if you have 10 Devices registered.
If you have, you need to delete one of them to add your new Smart Phone to Exchange for synching
Check the "Last Sync Time" to indicate if this device is still active or not.

    Hi, stig2013.
I would recommend the steps in the article below.  See the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
If you are receiving an error message, find the exact error number that you recieved in the article below and process the steps.
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
