Upgrade ibook or buy macbook?

Hi
Here is my question
I have a ibook G4 12" (1.07GHz, 256mb ram, OSX10.3.9), and I am no longer satisfied by its performance.
Instead of buying a new computer (Oh I know macbook is attractive), I am considering about using that nice chunk of money to upgrade my ibook.
If I add another 512mb ram, do you guys think I can run a Tiger smoothly? And if I lengthen my AppleCare plan as well, do you think I can stand the coming 2 years? (I am not doing crazy things but just use it to access the internet, IM and ftp....stuff like that)
Also do anyone know generally how long is the lifespan of an apple notebook? Mine is 2 years old, and I am worrying about the LCD monitor...
Maybe I'll be better off if I grab a macbook and worry nothing for the next 4-5 years. Which way is a wiser to invest in?
Thanks
ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are asking someone to make a decision only you can make.
Only you know what kind of applications you need or want.
If you want Tiger and more RAM, chances are you would be happiest with a new MacBook and your money would be better spent on putting it toward the new computer.
You cannot "lengthen" your AppleCare plan. Three years is as long as it goes.
Although some original iBooks from 1999 are still going strong, it looks like you are not going to be satisfied with any computer that is that old if you're dissatisfied with one that is two years old, now (assuming that Apple continues to upgrade the OS and hardware at the pace they have been going).
The lifespan of an Apple notebook varies greatly. Most people want or need a new one before theirs is worn out. It depends on how well you take care of it and how strenuously you use it.
I've found that I can live behind the curve a bit and let others hit the kinks first so I know what to expect. But I also find I need to upgrade about every two years to keep up with things. (I buy on eBay and usually buy the one just behind what is current, and would never buy one that didn't include the system discs with it.)
If you're sure you have to upgrade, if I were you, I'd buy the new MacBook, and forget about it for a little while (however long you can stand it).
Can you stand a compromise? Can you stand waiting until Leopard comes on the scene? I think that would be the wisest move. Those MacBooks look so nice, I may even bite when they release Leopard.

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
    Ciao.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Read the system requirements for the programs you listed. Match them against the specifications of the machine you propose to buy. The more RAM the better, your hard drive size requirements and video card specicications may require the upgraded, not base, model or may eliminate the MBA as a platform.

Watch the Apple Online Store’s refurb section for non-Retina 2012 models. The 2.9 GHz model is a very nice machine and there were some available within the past week. Check daily, because they go fast. I bought one last summer and I love it, but I am not playing games on it. B&H Photo still has some 2012 models, also.

I don't like the 'non-retina' MacBooks, why downgrade when for £100-£200 more you can get a retina Mac which looks and feels 100x better.
It's hardly a downgrade to those of us who care about being able to upgrade our Macs ourselves if and when we need or want to do so. For me, having a FW800 port is also a consideration.

If you registered your computer after June 11th, you were entitled to a free upgrade to Mountain Lion. See http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/.
If you went ahead an purchased ML before recieving your redemption code then you're just out $20. Not a big deal - you should have been instructed on how to get a redemption code for the OS X update.

Maybe some other app. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall anything, you have to start those apps by hand now. Restart.
    Still there?
Yes: Restart again while holding the shift key, this will start the mac in SafeMode: only the necessary items are loaded to run.

Yes: Make an etrecheck list and post it here.
No: Restart, put the items in the LoginItems back, one by one, restart after each entry, and you will find the "culprit"

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

Ive just upgraded my late 2009 macbook, and things are not working properly. First of all, when I started the computer first time after installing Mountain Lion, some message advised me that some files were impossible to install. Once I wrote my password, and for now on, everytime I start the session, another window advise me that "Java SE 6" is missing, due that, the computer can't run some "CS5Service Manager". If I try to install it, the download ends with an error. If finally, you skip the istallation, you arrive to the dock, but the menu bar at the top of the screen doesn't show up.
In addition, my trackpad doesn't works either. I can move the arrow but i can't click anywhere, probably because the option of clicking by touching is disabeled and I can't performance a regular click.
I'll be very glad if someone know what the heck is happening with my computer. Anyway, I'm going to the genius bar next Saturday. Thx!

  • Upgrade SATA drive for macbook late 2008

    Hello!!
I am here to ask for help. Let me tell you a bit more about my Mac:
Late 2008 silver 13" MacBook 250GB 2GB RAM 2.4GHz IntelCore2Duo DDR3 MB467LL/A, currently at 10.5.8 OSx system (yes I know I need to update the software as well!)
I currently bought 4GB kit (2x2GB) RAM to upgrade on my silver MacBook (late 2008), and would also like to update my hard drive.
I have looked around on online shops for 2.5" 9mm SATA drive, and came across to 1TB for not too bad a price (between £85 to £100).
Anyone know whether if this is ok for my laptop?
Samsung, WD Scorpio Blue and Toshiba, all are at 5400rpm for 1TB. (However there is 750GB Seagate 7200rpm 16MB - recommended???)
Large memory/drive are usually much needed with me as I do use a lot of design work e.g. Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop...you get the drift .
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Looking forward to hear from you soon!
    Thanks again,
    ejburton.

If all the technical specs (like SATA, physical dimensions, power usage etc) all match then you can use any drive of any available size in your MBP. Right now it appears that the largest available is the Western Digital 250GB 5400rpm drive where as the fastest is the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive. Fujitsu and Toshiba have annonce 300GB drives though I've not heard that either are yet shipping.
I have to say that I'm very pleased with the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive.

If you migrated all the info from time machine to your new MBP. The TM will usually ask to connect to the old backups.. sorry I am not sure is this what you want to do.. Personally I think you start a fresh backup.
BTW Time Capsule does not do anything.. it is a dumb hard disk in a box.. it is TM that does everything.
Look at B5 and B6 here about connecting to your backup.
