Upgrade Ideas

Hi,
I do a lot of video and motion graphics on my Mac Pro 1,1 and would like to upgrade the CPU and graphics cards. I see installation of the CPU may be a trickier process, but it looks like I'll have no trouble changing out the graphics card. I'll probably just pay someone to do the CPU. But when buying the gear, do you guys have any suggestions that I should keep in mind? Any recommendations for hardware?
I was looking at something like this for the processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115066
And something like this for the graphics card: hhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150507
Any thoughts would be great!
Lawrence

Thanks very much! As you can see, I'm pretty useless with upgrading. I've plugged in my own internal HD's and RAM for this system, but those are both pretty simple. However, I had hoped that the Mac Pro would allow for more inexpensive upgrading than buying new or refurbished. My current model has 2 Duel-Core Intel Xeon 2.66GHz processors and the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. So you're saying that due to other hardware issues, it would not really benefit me as much to upgrade to say, two of the Intel Xeon E5620 Westmere 2.4GHz 12MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 80W Quad-Core

Or will that not give me a big boost in processing/rendering speeds?
Thanks again for your advice & input.

  • Upgrade IDES SAP ERP Central Component 5.0

Hi, we have to upgrade IDES system from patch level 43 to 104, i tried to find the upgrade stacks but couldn't find anything, pls help.

    Hi Ambarish,
The IDES upgrade is not recommended and not supported by SAP. Reason being, IDES content contains many objects in the customer namespaces and the upgrade would certainly run into issues due to these. SAP Support also cannot be sought for, as the upgrade itself is not recommended. We have performed IDES upgrades, but encountered many issues during the procedure.
u201CIDES Content: Please note that all Support Packages / Enhancement Packages / Upgrades do not have any additional IDES-specific parts. You will not find additionaly demo data in your system after a technical upgrade.u201D
This states that standard SAP content delivery routes (SPs, EhPs, Upg exports) will not contain any IDES content, which is logical. The IDES content is not required by all customers needing SPs, EhPs or upgrades.

  • PowerBook G3 Pismo 400 Mhz Mega Max Upgrade Ideas?

    Hi guys,
I have a PowerBook G3 Pismo (400 Mhz) and I would like to know what the best possible upgrade would be for a machine of this age? HD, RAM, Batt. Thanks!

    needsomeihelp:
You will find popular brands of RAM with comparative prices at ramseeker. I have also purchased RAM, with good results from Kahlon. Note that some of these vendors offer free shipping. In addition, their RAM is guaranteed for life. If you buy at eBay you buy at your own risk, so be sure to ask questions.
    To access the RAM slots:
    • Disconnect Power adapter and remove main battery from bay.
    • Lift off the keyboard by pulling back on the tabs next to the esc key and between F8 and F9, and lay keyboard face down on palm rest;
    • Remove Microprocessor EMI shield by removing the two screws and lifting off shield.
    • Remove the long Phillips screw from the bottom left side of the heat exchanger.
Important: Do not remove the two screws holding the heat exchanger to the microprocessor board as this will break the seal of the thermal paste to the processor, and you will need to remove the old thermal paste and put new stuff.
    • Pull up on the tab on the right side of the board to release it from its connector. The connector is along the bottom, right side of the board. If the tab is missing bend a paper clip and hook it in the hole from the underside and lift.
Note: When replacing the board leave the top RAM module off, press down hard on the front right of the board until you feel the connector snap into place. It is very important that the card is properly seated or you may not be able to start the computer.
    • Insert RAM module in bottom slot, replace processor board, the insert RAM module in top slot.
    Good luck.

  • IDES Upgrade

    Hi,
    We have IDES on EhP3.
Note 799639 says that applying enhancement packs to an IDES system is possible.
However, we've faced several issues when upgrading IDES in the past.
Is it really possible to upgrade EhP3 IDES to EhP5 IDES ?
or will we have to install a fresh EhP5 IDES system ?
    Thank you

    Hi,
I think you guys have not read full information.  complete extract is:
    Enhancement Packages
From the technical point of view Enhancement Packages can be implemented into IDES systems.
BUT: This is only true if the customer is licensed for all AddOns /
components that are implemented in the IDES ERP System.
Because of this "limitation" we recommend to wait for coming IDES versions/releases that already include the EhP's.
(Please note that the current version of IDES ECC 6.0 already includes
    EhP4.)
    Thanks

  • Is This Hardware Upgrade Feasible?

My current system is an xw6200 HP workstation.  The display adapter is a GeForce GTX 260 OC, having 896 MB of GDDR3 memory (on a 448-bit bus), DirectX 10 support and a default GPU clock rate of 576 MHz.  This adapter drives 2 x NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi displays in 1920x1280. I have two Internal WD Caviar Black 1.0TB SATA HDs. There is a RAID controller but I'm not using it. The CPUs are two 3.60 GHz Xeon Model 4, Stepping 1, dual core with hyper threading turned on.  The memory is currently 2 x 2GB DDR2, 400/PC2-3200 Modules, Kingston KTH-XW8200/2G.  My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1.  My questions are with regard to CS5 Premiere Pro and AE.
My hardware gets bogged down when I try to edit a 1080p HD project.  The timeline is almost impossible to scrub in such a project (even with audio scrubbing turned off).  My hardware can't seem to keep up with previewing unrendered clips. I'm wondering if it's practical to upgrade this system so that I can use it (on a hobbyist basis; not professionally) to produce 1080p projects from my Canon 1D Mark IV camera.  I have done a couple of small 1080p projects already but I encountered agonizingly slow renders and frustrating timeline previews with many scrubbing failures.
If I install 2 x 4GB DDR2 RAM modules (Kingston KTH-XW8200/4G) in the unused slots, would this give me enough of a performance improvement so that I could successfully scrub the timeline in a 1080p project?
The GTX260OC is not listed in Adobe's approved CUDA adapters, but it does have a small bit of CUDA functionality.  Does Premiere Pro use it? Would upgrading this adapter to an nVidia Quadro 4000, with 2GB GDDR5 memory make a noticeable improvement?  How much does the bus speed in this (old) xw6200 workstation slow things down?  Is it worth upgrading memory and the display adapter with this MoBo?
All input and suggestions appreciated.   Regards, Mardon

    Harm & Bill,
Thanks to both of you for making it clear that I'd be foolish to try and modernize my 5-year old system. I guess I probably knew this before I read your replies but I didn't want to admit it to myself.  Your "tough love" about wasting my money was just what I needed.
So I'm off to investigate some i7 systems.  I see there's lots of posts in this forum about specs for new systems, so I'll read them all.  I live in Canada and I'm not sure if anyone here provides ready-made systems for CS5 video editing (like http://www.adkvideoediting.com/ does in the U.S.)  I have found a few companies that sell i7 gaming systems.  Is an i7 gaming system really any different than an i7 video editing system?   NCIX.com offers a lot of customizable i7 systems.  Harm, I'm not sure why you specifically mentioned an over clocked 950.  Would a 970 or a 990X be an alternative to over clocking a 950?
At least I think I'm now on the right track after having discarded my 'upgrade' idea based upon your feedback.
    Thanks and regards, Mardon

  • EHP4 with IDES ERP6.0 ?

    Hi,
Any one knows if  EHP4 can be installed on an IDES ERP 6.0 system?
We have an IDES ERP 6.0 SR3,  I want install EHP4 on it .
    it is possible or not?
    Thanks so much!

    Hi,
For IDES systems upgrade is not recommended by SAP..if you want IDES system on latest release then you have to install new system with latest release...
For more information, please go thorugh SAP note 799639...
Please find extract from this SAP note on upgrade
IDES should only be operated as a seperate installation. Each new release requires a new installation!
We do not recommend to upgrade an existing IDES systems. This is the only way to guarantee the full functionality of a tested demo system!
Customers performing an upgrade nevertheless should open an OSS-ticket to component XX-IDES. A remote connection  to the IDES system should be
available in order to give appropriate support! Extended support may be chargeable!
Also as far as relaese for EHP for IDES systems are concerned then current version of IDES ECC 6.0 includes EHP3. and EHP4 will be released in Q2/2009...
    hope it will help you...
    Thanks

  • LabVIEW IDE Overhaul

    1. Allow for "Tabbed Browsing" of VI's to better manage windows.2. Allow for the BD to be open independent of the FP.3. Allow dockable palettes... dock to either the edge of the screen, or to the top bar (pictured below) of LabVIEW.4. As a bonus, consider being able to open PDF's, txt's, and html's in tabs also for Help and documentation.5. Finally, allow the project tree to be docked into the IDE. Please, add your own IDE upgrade ideas in this discussion - illustrations will be especially helpful here. If it's a major enough idea, create a new idea!

In response to altenbach: 1. The problem of "hiding the titles" for 60 tabs could break down fairly easily. Let's say, when you double click a VI in the docked project it automatically jumps to the tab of the BD of that VI. If there is not a tab, it creates a tab. Now, your "window manager" becomes very clean - a hierchal view of all VI's in the project. Now, you have a list of about 20 text items you can visually scan and choose, rather than a WIN+Tab that you have to scroll through. And when you CTRL+E, it brings up the FP in a SEPARATE window (Ok, completely ditch the "FP in a tab" idea.) Would you propose a more elegant method of scanning through 30 VI's? 2. This is important to remember: Like most integrated, tabbed IDE's, you can resize the relative size of each element. Have a vertical divider that makes the tabs larger and project smaller. Have options that remove the docked palettes from the top of the window. 3. Comparing two small VI's would be easier with the tabbed method! Consider the case structure, and CTRL+Scrolling through the cases. When I want to compare two very similar cases, I CTRL+scroll Up, Down, Up, Down, comparing differences. Take two VI's in adjacent tabs: you could click a tab, then Arrow Left, Right, Left, Right, comparing differences. The overlay method of comparing (think the animated sketch artist, flipping up and down the previous frame in his or her sketchbook) is easier than side-by-side comparisons (remember the "can you find the differences between these two pictures" in your kid's coloring books? Subtle differences are not as readily evident). 4. Copy and pasting between two VI's, I normally do by dragging. In this case, you're right, two side by side windows is better. I suppose we would more heavily rely on CTRL+C and CTRL+V. I would readily accept this standardized concession. 5. The "one size fits all" container could DEFINITELY not apply to a FP (!!!), but there's no reason why it could not suit a BD! By default, all FP's have both vertical and horizontal scrollbars turned on. The size of the container is boundless... but the size of the viewing window is limited to how large you physically make the Windows window... just like today! Just make your environment window as large as your largest VI, and then the smaller VI's will have white space around them (pretty much like my original screenshot... a small BD in a larger window). 6. Although MSWord ditched MDI, Excel didnt'! Why? The nature of the documents open is dramatically different. Are you likely to be jumping around from .doc to .doc? Eh, maybe. How about .xls to .xls? Much more likely. How about from .vi to .vi? WAY more likely!! 7. Font toolbar... money. Pre-Kudos. (Just make it dockable!)  8. MDI for a LV deity? Jail. MDI for mere mortals? Productivity. MDI for NI? Sales. (A little dramatic? Arguable.) To jlokanis: 1. Windows 7 has a MUCH improved taskbar. It provides basically exactly what you are talking about - a window manager with one icon on the taskbar. I will use Windows 7, and it will suffice until LabVIEW offers a tabbed IDE.Message Edited by mechelecengr on 07-27-2009 08:58 PM

  • N91 - Hard Disk Dead?

I have just started having a problem with my N91 where, when I turn it on, it freezes on the opening screen, and the hard-drive works. However, the hard drive appears to be making a louder noise than usual, a clicking noise. The only way out of this is to remove the battery.
If I turn it on without the battery cover, it boots normally, and all functions that don't require the hard disk work fine, but it won't grant access to the hard disk without me replacing the battery cover. As soon as I do this the phone locks, and the hard drive makes clicking noises again.
It will be a bit of a shame if the hard-disk data cannot be recovered, as although I have recently backup up the videos I took, and have backups of pretty much all the other data (things that came with the phone, general data files, music etc.), I didn't get copies of all the photos onto my computer's hard disk for a while.
Also, it will be a shame if it can't be repaired, as this was (and still is) the perfect phone for me, and apart from this has caused very little trouble (and I was going to hang onto it for a good while yet - I'd just treated it to new earphones for out and about use too).
Any ideas? Or is it just off to the nearest Nokia centre to hope they can do something?
    Thanks,
    Martin

Well, if it's dead and can't be repaired, they should surely be giving me a replacement under warranty? Otherwise that would be totally unacceptable!
Sending it direct seems like a good option to me, as long as I can find an appropriate phone that takes the sim card. Do you know if a Nokia 3410 (should have one somewhere) will take the 3g sim card? (I had to change the sim card and transfer the number across when I upgraded, as apparently the old one wouldn't support any 3g functionality). I concerned in case different standards have different voltages and the card or phone "blow up" as a result - don't want to have to skulk to my network for a replacement!
The N82 doesn't have music buttons ON THE PHONE (I'd probably prefer the N95 8GB, although the Xenon flash of the N82 is nice). Nice extra features, but then again, the sound of these phones has been criticised compared to the N91.
The N81 is not a bad replacement (but not so nice stainless steel, and crowded buttons), although not really much better in most respects, so if it were a free replacement in case of N91 being unrepairable, or if my N91 were out of warranty I'd consider it.
However, as my phone is in warranty, I think I'll avoid spending rather a lot of money on the phone for now (I'm on a £15 a month contract - the cheapest contract from my network with an upgrade is £25 a month for the next 18 months, plus probably another £100 lump sum at least. This works out at least £280. If getting a phone from elsewhere sim free, it would be similarly expensive).
Thanks for your upgrade ideas though.

  • Can I change out the type of tablet without incurring fees

I currently have a tablet on my account with a shared data plan.  I don't particularly like this tablet and am getting another one, a Kindle Fire HDX, that has Verizon wi-fi capability.  I don't want to add the new tablet to the account but just want to swap the tablets out on the account.  Now, my phone and the tablet were paid for (they are not on the Edge program) which means I have a 2-yr service agreement.  I don't think the purchase is going to fall under an early upgrade idea but want to make sure I am not going to incur the "upgrade fee prior to the end of contract" fees.  I am getting the Kindle regardless just for the reading purposes but it would be nice to be able to swap everything out.
    Thanks

I definitely want to make sure you can connect to the device that works best for you! As long as the device is not being purchased with a service agreement, you can activate it on an exisiting line without any kind of activation or upgrade fee. Check if the device itself can be activated on the VZW network right here: http://vz.to/1jhV5Xj. You can also make the switch online here: http://vz.to/1dy7Mcv

  • Illustrator and OS X 4.11

I am running OS X 4.11 on an iMac 5. I do not get Classic with the discs for the iMac, nor is there a Classic folder on the hard drive.
Problem is I have a copy of Illustrator for OS 9 and an upgrade for Illustrator to OS X. I can't use the upgrade until I install the original in OS 9.
I have tried using an old OS 9 install disc, but it doesn't show up on Startup disc, nor does it show up when I hold down 'C' or 'option' when I startup.
Any ideas how I can get the old version of Illustrator onto the iMac so I can use the upgrade can start to use it in OS X?
    Thanks.

Hi, Bill. Does the old version of illustrator actually have to be installed on your iMac, or would it be enough just to be able to enter its serial number into the installer for the later version? I've been able to install Photoshop CS2, which I bought at the upgrade price, using my original Photoshop 2.5 serial number without having to reinstall PS 2.5 from its 8 floppy disks. If Illustrator won't allow you the same option, you're in a hard spot. Your iMac can't start up in any version of OS 9 under any circumstances, and the OS 9 installer disc can only be used on a Mac that can start up from it. So the OS 9 disc will be of no use to you on your iMac.
If the discs you got with the iMac are the ones that were originally shipped with it, they contain an installer for Classic support. See the Read Me files on those discs for instructions for installing Classic and reinstalling bundled applications. Getting Classic support installed would enable you to run the old version of Illustrator on the iMac if you could install it, but — Catch 22 — it might not enable you to install the old version. I suspect the old installer only runs on a computer that is booted into OS 9, and won't install anything if you try to run it in Classic mode within OS X. However, if you can get Classic support installed easily, installing Illustrator in Classic mode is well worth a try, since the only alternative method I can this of is quite cumbersome.
That alternative method involves finding an OS 9-bootable, FireWire-equipped Mac that you can use for an hour and having a FireWire external hard drive that you can take to that machine. (The FireWire drive *must have OS 9 drivers installed on it*, which can only be done when formatting the drive using OS X's Disk Utility or OS 9's Drive Setup.) Take the Firewire drive to the borrowed machine. Install OS 9 on the FireWire drive, then install the OS 9-based version of Illustrator on it. Take the external drive back to your iMac. Drag-copy the System Folder and the Illustrator folder (and any other files that Illustrator has installed on it) from the external drive to your iMac's internal drive. Then run the Illustrator upgrade disc (which I assume is OS X-native) to convert Illustrator to the OS X-native version.
DO NOT open, register or "activate" the old version of Illustrator while your external drive is connected to the other Mac. Don't allow the registration process to go forward until you have the application on your own iMac's hard drive. The world of unremitting hassle and inconvenience you'll be in if Adobe's user registration database associates your copy of Illustrator with someone else's computer will make it well worthwhile just to forget the upgrade idea and buy the full, current version of Illustrator, whatever it costs.
I still use Illustrator 8 in Classic mode within Panther. It works fine and serves my limited needs, so I can't justify the cost of upgrading to an X-native version.

  • External Hard Drive Connected via PCMCIA

I am going to upgrade the hard drive on my laptop. One step involves transferring the info from my present IDE hard drive to the upgrade IDE hardrive. The upgrade IDE hard drive will be in a hard drive adaptor that is connected via a PCMCIA slot.
I presume (and certainly hope) there will be no drama, with the kernel recognizing the external hard drive as /dev/hdX, given all of the relevant PCMCIA features are enabled.
If somone has done this and encountered any gotchas, I would appreciate the intel.
    Regards, Rick

Perhaps no one replied to the original post because the answer is embarassingly simple. All one needs is the device driver ide-cs, which is not present in the package kernel-scsi. The upgrade hard drive becomes /dev/hde.
The software aspects turned out to be a bit more challenging, but that is the subject of another post.

  • What workstation graphics card should i run under bootcamp?

I run Rhino (64 bit) with windows 7 through bootcamp. the software mfg's recomended graphics card is the AMD FirePro v7900 or v5900, and user group recos the nvidea quadro 4000. I am currently using an Nvidea gtx285 and driving two displays from it. Looking to upgrade both memory and video card for optimal performance.

Mixing nVidia and ATI under Windows is usually a no=go.
The FirePro is single slot and 150W so only needs 1 x 6-pin power cable.
Amazon has $790 or $100 more than the v7900  NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac
I take it the GTX 285 doesn't work well enough?
If you don't care about early boot screen there are GTX 570/580 take up two slots.
    some upgrade ideas:
Put Windows on an SSD and put your work data files on another drive.
is 2008 model uses FBDIMMs 8 x 4GB is max - 8 DIMMs though is ideal.
    Crucial Technology CT2CP51272AP80E 8 GB
    DDR3 (2009+)  24GB costs what 8GB FBIMM would.

  • I "upgraded" to FF4, now it doesnt work properly, wont open pages, will open blank tabs when i click on a link, tried to go back to the older one but that doesnt work now either, have tested it with Safari and it opens everything fine. Any ideas?

After upgrading to firefox 4 im now having a lot of problems using the browser.
if i try an open a link in a new tab it will just open up a blank tab, if i click on links or even type in the google search bar at the top it doesnt do anything, it just says "done" and the circle thing stops as if im on the page already, have tested it with Safari doing the same things and Safari works fine. I'd swap but all my bookmarks and passwords are in Firefox so id rather stay with that.
I tried going back to the older version of firefox (3.5 or something) but seems the bugs are here to stay now.......so.......any ideas? because its really annoying, shouldn't have "upgraded".
Is there a new patch coming out anytime soon or should i start getting used to Safari?
    Thanks for your help.

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room.  With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account.  While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases".  If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device.  Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!!  Enjoy...

I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.

No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
