Upgrade iMac ppc os 10.4.11 to 10.5

Hi There
I'd like know if I could upgrade the operating system on my iMac ppc from 10.4.11 to 10.5. I read a few of the forum posts and it seem that it's possible with a few tweaks. One suggestion I found is a post from tbdmoss posted on the 2nd of November, which is as follows:
It's pretty easy to get Leopard installed on any G4 machine with AGP graphics, which includes your eMac. You can make a small modification to the Leopard DVD to remove the (artificial) check for 867+ MHz if you want a DVD that will always install with no hassle, but if you just want to do one installation it's probably easier to:
(1) Hold the Command, Option, O and F keys together when starting the machine and only
release them once the Open Firmware command line has appeared.
(2) Insert the Leopard DVD into the Mac’s DVD drive.
(3) Run the following script exactly as below (including capitals), press Enter after each line
and check that Open Firmware displays “ok”
dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0
d# 867000000 encode-int " clock-frequency" property
boot cd:,
:tbxi
Will this work for the iMac I own?
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Dave

Hey Ralph,
I thought I'd let you know how I'm going with upgrading my iMac. It certainly has been a learning curve and I've made some very fundamental goofs. It's a wonder the iMac hasn't exploded with the way I've been going about trying to upgrade it. However I think I've finally done it in, and I just tried to upgrade the operating system.
If I step you through what I have done when upgrading the operating system, perhaps you could offer me some suggestions to alleviate the predicament I seem to be in at the moment. This post is going to be difficult for me, because I'm not a tech-head, and the situation I'm about to describe has a chronology of haphazard procedures I performed in order to try and upgrade the operating system.
Pause for a cigarette...
Now, where to start.
I downloaded a 10.5 Leopard OS torrent from the internet to burn onto a DVD+R DL CD. I followed all of the procedures described in the forum to burn it onto the CD. However, when I tried to burn the software onto the DVD+R DL CD, the iMac did not recognise the CD and subsequently there I met the first of my consternation's. Having pondered the dilemma I thought of an alternative. I happen to own a MacBook, and while reading the forum for instructions on burning the CD, I happened upon a post which described using an external hard drive to perform the operating system upgrade.
All very well... except,
I happened to overlook a strategic step in the upgrade procedure. I remember from the forum something about 'partitioning the hard drive' on the destination volume, or something like that. <:-\
Anyway, I connected a firewire between the iMac and the MacBook and setup a network between the two devices. I then opened the image of the Leopard operating system on the MacBook and proceeded to opened the disc utility. I clicked on the restore menu radio button in the disk utility and dragged and dropped the image of the Leopard OS, as per instructions, into the source field. I then dragged and dropped the image of the iMac HD into the destination field and pressed restore. It all went along smashingly.
After the download to the iMac was complete, I followed subsequent steps. I was advised to restart the MacBook, where I was assured the Leopard OS would begin the upgrade procedure. It did, although the other way. Somehow I ended up with the Leopard OS on my MacBook when I was intending to upgrade the iMac. Serendipity, I only had 10.4.11 on the MacBook, and now I have Leopard! Great huh?
My delight was short lived.
Remember the partitioning of the destination hard drive I overlooked earlier? It seems I've given my iMac an identity crisis. I have caused what is affectionately known as 'the spinning wheel of death'. Apparently the iMac can no longer distinguish between the Leopard OS and Tiger. The i Mac proceeds no further than the grey screen with the Apple icon and the spinning wheel. I can still access the iMac and all of the data on it through a firewire network, but I'm uncertain of how to restore either of the operating systems.
Meanwhile, the Leopard OS on the MacBook has very nice features.
Is my iMac ruined?
Please help!
Dave

Want to upgrade iMac os x 10.5.8. suggestions as to what next best version I should go to?

If it is a PPC iMac (G4 or G5) Leopard 10.5.8 is as far as it can go.
If an Intel iMac, read on:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • What is the latest  version of OS X that I can run on iMac PPC G4?

I'm having trouble using my old iMac PPC G4 flat panel due to the web browsers being so old that many web sites are not compatible. I can't upgrade FireFox or Safari to newer versions with my current OS X v10.3.9, which is probably the highest I can run on this iMac. Any advice?

  • IMac PPC script problems after Leopard install

    Help please:
Hardware - iMac PPC 1.25GB system memory 80GB hard disc
Was running Tiger (fully updated) OK with no problems except hard disc getting full.
Did two things - upgraded to Leopard then moved iTunes content (about 38GB) to external hard drive (with hindsight realise should have moved the music first and done a clean install). I've got the external drive partitioned with Time Machine backing up to one volume and iTunes on the other. All seems to be working OK.
PROBLEM - can't run lots of third party software which previously ran OK eg Open Office (even after reinstall), Onyx, Real Player. Getting messages such as:
    "<<script>> doesn't understand the <<event earsffdr>> message (-1708)"
A search suggests this may have happened cos the hard disc got too full at one point - or maybe it was the Leopard upgrade.
I've tried repairing permissions, PRAM zap, general clean-up etc. but no joy.
Should I reinstall Tiger as an "archive and install"? Or could I try doing that with Leopard so I can keep Time Machine? Or is this an excuse to buy a shiny new iMac?
    Thanks for helping a newb.

why ould you reinstall Tiger with archive and install?! that will not work well. if you try reinstalling anything it should be leopard. do an archive and install of leopard. you'll have to restart TM backups but that's the only downside.

  • Upgraded iMac to ML but not my MacBook Pro and the MBP will not print wirelessly

Upgraded iMac to ML and can print wirelessly to HP5200C, but Mac Book Pro, which is not yet upgraded to ML will not.

Do you have the latest HP drivers, available from Apple here, on your MBP?

  • Word, Safari crash on print to HP C4780 on iMac/PPC Leopard

I recently reinstalled (fresh install) Leopard 10.5.8 on my iMac PPC; works fine.  Then installed an HP C4780 printer for use on that Mac.  No drivers for that printer exist on the basic Leopard install, so I installed the HP drivers from CD (also tried downloading updated ones from the HP site).  the install goes fine, and I can print a test page.
However, whenever I try to print (or print preview) a page from anything else (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Safari, Firefox), the application that I'm trying to print from crashes.  Every time.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers to no avail.
I'm out of ideas now.  Does anyone have a clue on this one?
    Thanks
    Dennis

Thank you for your time in addressing this issues.
I looked into turning off rosetta and some other posts on that thread said you can't do that anymore.???? Something that is working for me so far is just creating another user and giving it admin privileges. Everything prints as it should. Not sure why this works, and I am still holding my breath. Its been working for about 3 days now and no glitches. Still have some files to transfer and hoping it won't bring the dream crashing down. =(
    Thanks, Tom

  • My iMac PPC has little A's with boxes around them instead of text?

After my son's visit from NYC my iMac PPC OS 10.4.11 now has A's with boxes around them instead of usual names across the top of the screen.  No more File Edit etc across the top of the screen?

That's usually caused by a third-party font manager competing with FontBook. Check the links in this old thread:

And speak sternly to your son if he installed a font manager

Mac or PC ? - I believe that Adobe switched the processing functions for 3D rendering in Photoshop CC to VRam.
To upgrade the Vram on my existing iMacs cost-effectively entails new upgraded iMacs.
So I am now needing to purchase new desktop computers for production purposes and seperately for an education institute - PC's or Macs?
Is this shift to Vram for image rendering affecting any processing functions of the other applications in the suite - the ones I use the most are Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, inDesign, & SoundBooth
I also use Strata 3D, Lightwave, Maya, Cinema 4D, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro,
I will be using the suite in a Graphic design, Photography, Video editing / sound recording / editing (I am also a musician), animation and 3D context.

This forum is primarily for a few users like me to answer questions about installation, serial numbers and general issues regarding the Creative Suite. We don't have to expertise to answer questions like you're asking. Otherwise, few people visit this forum.
You'd do best to pick the forums of the applications you use the most, especially applications that test the limits of your computer (probably Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop) and ask in those forums.

Is it safe to upgrade iMac 8 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Yosemite? It has Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, 4GB RAM?

Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility first; there’s always a chance that something will go wrong during the upgrade.

Since upgrading iMac to osx lion I have been experiencing problems in mail, it spontaneously stops receiving and tells me it can't find the pop server and also the biggest problem is that when I send with an attachment the recipient doesn't receive it.
I have to restart mail most times before it starts recieving or recognizes the pop server.
As I said a lot of recipients do not recieve my mails when there is an attachment or when I reply to their email.

  • I upgraded iMac to Yosemite, and my Adobe CS5 products  (Photoshop, dreamweaver, etc) would not open. Multiple issues

I upgraded iMac to Yosemite, and my Adobe CS5 products (Photoshop, dreamweaver, etc) would not open. A message popped up saying I needed to load Java SE 6.  The Apple Tech support person had me select all the Java folders and files in my library and delete the. I then downloaded Java 7. However, nothing happens when I click on the program icon. I went to reinstall the products, but the activation code was not valid (even though I got it off the Adobe site for my products with Adobe). I tried to install just one product (Illustrator) in the trial mode, but still nothing happens. How can I get my Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other programs to work?

some (like illustrator cs5 appear to be incompatible with yosemite, at least, according to some users - http://roaringapps.com/apps:table).
for the rest, check at the above link.
if others have had success, your best option would be to uninstall, clean and then reinstall per Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • How much faster iMac i7 vs iMac PPC G5

I'm running an iMac PPC G5 which seems to be getting a little long in the tooth.
I have not been able to find reviews comparing the iMac G5 vs the current iMac Intel i7.
    Pointers?  Comments?
    Running: iMac PPC G5 w v10.4.11

"btw the PPC processors are used in cars for recording steering, engine timings, and fuel milage."
It's important to remember that CPU's used in embedded applications (in cars, devices etc.) are completely different animals (they are all about low power use and being cheap) from what the old PowerPC G5 was - there are intel chips for embedded applications as well.  Anything PowerPC embedded would probably be designed on the G3 or G4 and probably without the FPU.  IMHO, the old G5 was more comparable to a top of the line single core Pentium 4 (the single core Pent 4's could go much faster than the duals) and the G5 was a great CPU in the day….but the G5 was modeled along the fast clock speed and high temp of the Pent 4 - which was a dead end.  PowerPC could have gone on if IBM or Motorola wanted to design future chips for efficient parallel processing like intel did with the Core 2 and onward chips, but the money and will wasn't there.
Nowadays though, as others have pointed out, the G5 is so far back in the performance list its often not listed on benchmark pages anymore.  A Intel i5 or i7 with a SSD for the hard drive is like magic compared to what we had - that said, for the tinfoil hatters, the old G5 (and supporting system chips) almost certainly didn't have it any NSA issues in them (unlike today's Intel CPU's and most likely the supporting chips in today's systems as well) etc..
